PS1's Lighting Effects are gimmicky anyway. Its nothing more than Low Key Illumination and Screen Filtering for Half Transparency Effects. People who claim the PS1 version looks better are deluded. the Saturn version looks FAR sharper with Smooth Perspective Correction, Flawless Bit Mapping, Texture Layering, Proper Affine Plane Drawing, with BETTER Resolution and Multi threading. Besides that, Sony sucked at actual TRUE Transparency effects. TT&L is TRUE Lighting. And wasn't first introduced until Model 3, 3Dfx, Dreamcast. Hell the PS2 couldn't even do TT&L but the Dreamcast(Software Wise),Voodoo 2 AND Xbox and GameCube/Stargate could handle TT&L.
It actually doesn't. It's a known fact that Saturn is weaker in 3D ability than PS1. Technically, it's a superior 2D machine, but weak in 3D. Fighting games aren't exactly difficult to create and make them look aesthetically pleasing. Racing games are the same way, which is why they are used often to showcase console ability. Fact is, if you play a game like Tomb Raider on PS1 then play it on Saturn, it's easy to see how much better the PS1 version is.
Both versions have their pros and contras. The PS1 game has accurate shadows and more realistic looking movements, while the Saturn version used just circles as shadows, but it has more detail in the backgrounds.
To give more insight on the vastly different visuals between arcade/Sega Saturn and Playstation 1, the arcade and Sega Saturn version of DOA1 runs on a Sega made engine graphics wise. So when Team Ninja/Tecmo was bringing DOA1 to the PS1, they had to re-make it in a different engine. So yes, if you were to play the Sega Saturn (or Xbox version), you'd be getting an experience closer to the arcades in terms of the original released version of DOA!. Dead or Alive++ is another arcade version of DOA1 which is based on the PS1 version.
Yes. But both the Model 2 and Saturn used quads as their primitives, while the PlayStation and every other modern consoles\PC-GPU uses triangles. Completely new 3D characters models had to be recreated during the porting process. While the conversion from Model 2 to Saturn would mostly be a reduction in quads. Sega decided to go with quads because the Model 1 used quads. I believe even the model 3 used quads, it wasn't until the Dreamcast that Sega switched to triangles. Quads are only better at making flat, cubed or rectangular objects but to create anything with curves triangles are better. The GPUs that Model 1 was derived from were originally used for simulations of jets, which is why they used quads.
Both games are actually different games using similar assets. Tecmo during the 90's had their own arcade hardware, but for Dead or Alive, they released it on SEGA's Model 2. This was because they were able to negotiate the VF2 Source code/engine, actually getting AM2's code for both Model 2 and Saturn. When deciding to port to PS1 they obviously could use this code (for many obvious reasons), so the PS1 version was built on the early test code for Dead or Alive 2, which was planned initially for release on Model 3 (though without any SEGA supplied source/engine). This port would then see a release on Tecmo's own 3D arcade board the TPS (Tecmo Play System, a modified SONY-ZN1 arcade board). Supposedly they used Namco development example code and borrowed code from Arika to speed up development of the PS1/TPS version, which is why the Saturn/Model 2 version appears in Ultimate as they were unable to negotiate with Namco, Capcom and Arika to rerelease their partial code on Xbox. So yeah, DoA on PS1 isn't a port of DoA on Saturn, but another game you could call Dead or Alive 1.5 whose code is closer to DoA2 than it is to DoA1.
the Saturn version is much nearer to arcade...exellent port on saturn. Is an example if good coders use the hardware..everything is cool on saturn...look Lobotomy games too
@@Rotoid because you base how good a console port is by how close it is to the arcade machine. It has always been that way. As arcade versions of games back then were always superior to the console port.
I have to say, my favorite character in the entire franchise is Ayane... but the Saturn version is just a much better game in my opinion. Both visually and in terms of gameplay because the "danger zones" make you able to perform the most devastating combos. Also, DOA, because it makes you able to counter every single move even during a combo, is by far my favorite fighting games franchise of all time. For once in a fighting game, you don't just wait until the combo is over to be able to play again... That's huge!
The Saturn was the arcade version. Look at the floor movement on the Saturn vs the PlayStation, the Saturn mimicks the arcade to the T, but the PlayStation version backgrounds are flat, cause that system doesn't have independent scrolling like the Saturn, so they made it up with the shading, however, they severely lost the hi resolution mode, where the Saturn has it, and it's clearly shown.
Really no comparison. Itagaki-san LOVED the Saturn. While everyone else was crying, he said it wasn't too bad. He stated there were other consoles far more difficult to develop for. This wasn't a breeze by any means, but not the most challenging for him. He said the same of the PS3. Oh SEGA Saturn, infinite planes. No texture shifting like the PlayStation version either and far better to control on the Saturn controller.
Many developers actually liked working on Saturn, Lobotomy, Kenji Eno, Game Arts and ESP developers etc. Because even if indeed the architecture of the Saturn is less homogeneous than that of the PS1, it also left much more freedom to developers who could themselves create their tools and their programming routines. In fact, many Saturn games just couldn't be converted properly on PS1.
PS3? He favored the X360 back in the day when he was still at Team Ninja. He didn't directly work in any PS3 game (NG Sigma 1 and 2 were directed by Hayashi, who toned down a lot of things).
@@ciredecgellar8232 There a lot yes but not much and we can count by finger. Saturn has difficulty on using transparency on 3D due to developer having difficulty to make VDP2 accessing the RAM . This is common knowledge
A versão do Saturn é incrivelmente competente.
I liked how much smoother the PS version was, but preferred that the Saturn version at least attempted to keep the look and feel of the arcade version.
Each version plays to its system's strengths, and which one you prefer is really just a matter of personal taste. Do you prefer shading and lighting effects? Then go with Sony. Do you prefer sharp 480-resolution? Go with Sega. It sucks that the Saturn version was never released in the US, but the prozines would have bashed it for not looking as "pretty" as the Playstation version and it probably wouldn't have sold many copies. That's too bad, because it's one of the best looking games for the system.
It would've probably done just fine over here, the play mechanics were very similar to Virtua Fighter(except every character had counters) and it came out the year before(Oct 1997) the Playstation version(Mar 1998). One of the import shops had the Japanese Saturn version of the game which I promptly picked up.
kkkkk leaves of mi mi, saturn version even having lacquer before is superior to the play in graphics and sound, final point, is not that of taste not saturn version won admits when aproducer of games knew to use the power of saturn the play did not have chance this is the truth.
Which one you prefer is really a matter of personal taste. If you prefer the lighty-glowy effects, go with PSX. If you prefer crisp arcade visuals, go with Saturn. I personally prefer the Saturn for its higher polygon models and sharp 480/60 display. Between this game and Go Go Goal, you can see how Tecmo mastered the system's hardware better than almost anyone. The excessive lighting and shading effects, combined with a notably lower poly count on the models, makes the Playstation version feel more dated in my eyes. Mind you, I was never a big fan of that look, so it's probably just me. Everybody else loved the lighty-glowy look and had to cram it into every videogame.

The lighting included in the PS1 games makes the character models definitely look better in the PS1 game but I don't like the backgrounds and the fact it's not like the MODEL 2 Arcade version which also didn't include light sourcing. So this makes the Saturn game for me the winner since it is much closer to the Arcade original
The PSX version looks very UGLY and Spastic. This is due to PSX's biggest problem in texturing and creating Affines and Backgrounds: Warping. No Anti Warping like Diffusion,Deflection,Multi Bending or Perspective Correction.

Saturn closer to the arcade - PS1 little more refined but not so sharp definition. I got both versions, and each are very good in their own way i guess lol....overall a tie for me - imo.
Saturn looks crisp, clean, polished and flawless. PSX looks ugly, warped and gimmicky. Its severe flaws in Affine Planes and Texture Mapping very apparent here.
One of the only games that shows why the Saturn is more powerful than PSX (3D). High resolution (704x480i) ,60fps, better sound, no texture warping, better models, no zooming like the PS1 counterpart, and better backgrounds, also the loading times are shorter on SAT. The only thing that lacks Saturn is Dynamic Lighthing (the reason is because Tecmo used the Virtua Fighter 2 engine and that engine lacks support for light sourcing to run the game at the highest resolution of the Saturn). This is how to optimize a good 3D game for the Saturn with the 2 CPU's well programmed.
Playstation had actual lighting, colored lighting, proper shading of the characters, and shadows. It's a very significant upgrade over the Saturn, which retains the flat, light-less, and incoherent look of the Model 2 version.
doa on ps1 was based on another arcade version "dead or alive++". This game run on capcom zn2 hardware. Saturn version was based on the original model 2 arcade.
I'm blown away by the performance they achieved on the Saturn. Looks like they just added more development time on PSX version, so the comparaison can't be fair. I'm sure with more time they could have done the same shadowing as PS version since it's just plain black polygons without transparency.
It's tricky to tell but the Saturn version runs in a higher resolution too but all these video's are in tiny windows for no reason so its really hard to tell.
Saturn win, better resolution, far away better backgrounds, better pad. The PS version is good and have more characters. But the original one is better anyway. Even the creator of the game, Tomonobu Itagaki said that the Saturn version is the best home port of the game.
The lighting on the PS1 is really something nice but the saturn does a bunch of things better here because it has some better design choices, rather hardware usage. I cant really rate one
The lighting effect is all low Illumination and Screen filtering. Its pretty bad on the PS1. The Worse part is the lack of BGs and terrible Character Models. They look like Paper Dolls.
PS1 imo is a better port it had the futuristic look just like if you compared to doa 2 the characters more bigger more detailed the punches and jabs look real for the time and cinematic for the time honestly the Saturn plays like the arcade but it looks dull and unfulfilled compared to PS1 just my opinion

PlayStation version has better shadows and nice lighting but the Saturn version looks nicer in most other areas to me. I also much prefer the Saturn / Arcade gameplay over the PlayStation version. Oh and the Saturn version has awesome music!
It's hard to say because both ports have points. I think PS1 version is better than the Saturn version if we talk about graphics and content which is a plus because PS1 has more costumes and Ayane, on the other hand, gameplay are good on both but against PS1 version, one of the few better points for saturn is gameplay which is a little faster and more similar to the arcade. If we talk about how well-ported is one version, Saturn wins, but PS1 version is an "improved" one of the original base. Personally, if only the saturn version had Ayane (I'm not going to consider the training dummy), I would prefer that version over PS1.
You cant compare them straightly since they are different games with somewhat complex history. Saturn version is the prototype that later gave the ultimate arcade Model 2 version and Playstation port is based on the weaker arcade Tecmo System11 which was intrroduced later with added and removed content which make it a different game overall. Other than that Saturn version is the better one, even though it has fewer polygons and worse lighting,
Saturn IS components of low end Model 2 hardware. The Difference between Saturn and Model 2 is like the difference between Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge.
One thing is for sure. Anytime you have side by side comparisons and you have people chiming in that one console is better than the other "just look at this" and "this consoles does this better and this"..and someone else chimes in..""NO this console does this and this better and only that console does this" and the battle goes on between people over and over..THOSE are the people you dont listen to. Because they argue over power and how things are rendered and done. There has to be a clear winner...PERIOD..So obviously those guys dont know the real facts of "said system" OR there would be no debate, only real tech specs and proof..you cant argue FACTS..
ps1 doa certainly looks to be producing the better image to my eyes. The fighters just look so much more rounded and polished. I even prefer the more simplistic backgrounds of the ps1. I will say the graphical style is so different on each, that I could see a number of people having a preference for the saturn release, but in terms of what screams gorgeous 3d graphics, the PlayStation certainly takes this honor.
As great as the Saturn version is, DoA is a fine example of Sega f**king up games for Saturn owners. Refusing to export excellent games like this while PS1 effortlessly snaps up and churns out great games.
psx looks way better. the Saturn version the people look like blocks, very very block like. it looks so much smoother and realistic on psx and better lighting too.
On the saturn it looks more blocky but also more like a good anime drawing, while the psx looks a little less blocky but like a very bad drawing of deformed mutant character. Very horrible result for the ps1 in this game.
If you look closer you'll notice that backgrounds on the Saturn are in actual 3D while it's mostly a simple image on the PSX. So it's not really fair to focus on fighters.
backgrounds are actually layered sprites, same as vf2 was on saturn. Looks convincing though. I suspect this might be difficult for the playstation to achieve. Does anyone know of an example in a game?
I think the PS-version looks better overall due to the much more convincing and beautiful lighting, which is completely absent on the saturn... again (must have been very hard to do on the saturn). Makes the saturn-version look very, very flat and almost boring compared to the atmospheric PS-version. But I like how they used the saturn's VDP2 here with several independently scrolling and scaling 2D background-layers. Nice to see someone put that thing to good use.
The PS1 version isn't bad at all, i do think the Saturn version is a better but that doesn't mean that the PS1 version is bad, far away from that actually.
The Saturn version is better, runs at 60 fps and have a bigger resolution, but it's not so noticeable like some people are saying, the biggest difference i see, it's the shading, who have much more contrast in the ps1, but this is just a design choice i think.
@@konstantinmfs2744 There's no lighting effects on the PS1 version. And the Character models look AWFUL. They're stretched out and Papery looking. Saturn wins.

I may not be the first to point this out in comments, and welcome clarification if off/wrong/missing any information. The PlayStation version is Dead or Alive + (++ has Bass, Ayani _may be misspelled or misnamed, girl from DOA2 with pink sash/ribbon). I wonder if that made it to arcades, or was in/slammed for release on PS1, or simply scrapped in dev. I only ever saw screens of this in a magazine, long ago.
Saturn version is an excellent arcade port but PS1 version is an upgrade of the arcade version. PS1 version was sold later so Tecmo had time to improve the game. Some PS1 advantages: 1) Bigger characters; 2) Better graphics, 3) Excellent BGM included (one of the best fighting game OST of all times); 4) Two chars included (Ayane and Bass); 5) Many skins included; 6) More beautiful scenarios.
I had both versions growing up, and while the Saturn version definitely resembled the arcade more, I always preferred the look of the PS version. Saturn version definitely had more interesting backgrounds though. PS had Tekken 1-level bland backgrounds.

The Arcade game ran on Model 2. That's totally different to the Sega Saturn hardware. The developers were third party. Not sure what your point was.
Is an example if good coders use the hardware..everything is cool on saturn...look Lobotomy games too
Who cares about "being nearer to arcade" if PS1 version looks much better.
@@Rotoid indeed, but since this is not the case.
@@Rotoid because you base how good a console port is by how close it is to the arcade machine. It has always been that way. As arcade versions of games back then were always superior to the console port.
@@ShutUpAndListen79yep especially when it's an arcade port, sounds logic ...
@the simplekz but so many did anyway ....
My favorite too. I loved playing with him in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
Both are very good versions but wow, with Saturn u feels more arcade playing! 😍
This comparison is WAY BETTER than the DOA comparison Gaming Palooza Empire released a little bit ago.
Agreed, that guy is obviously trying to make the ps1 look heaps better than Saturn, it's pathetic and maddening.
Oh yes!
According to doa's creator and director he considers the saturn version the best version ever made.

A versão do Saturn é incrivelmente competente.
PSX tbm roda a 60fps
Is the Saturn version using the Virtua Fighter 2 engine?
I liked how much smoother the PS version was, but preferred that the Saturn version at least attempted to keep the look and feel of the arcade version.
A comparison of steep slope sliders on Saturn and Trick'n snowboarder (also known as tricky sliders in Japan) on the PS1 would be a great video.
That's too bad, because it's one of the best looking games for the system.
saturno wins
It would've probably done just fine over here, the play mechanics were very similar to Virtua Fighter(except every character had counters) and it came out the year before(Oct 1997) the Playstation version(Mar 1998).
One of the import shops had the Japanese Saturn version of the game which I promptly picked up.
kkkkk leaves of mi mi, saturn version even having lacquer before is superior to the play in graphics and sound, final point, is not that of taste not saturn version won admits when aproducer of games knew to use the power of saturn the play did not have chance this is the truth.
your english sucks.
You have to get dead or Alive 2 Ultimate to play the Saturn version. The graphics still look good. Temco games in general are timeless.
Is the ps1 version 30fps?
"Excessive shading and lighting" XD "Notably lower polygon count" XD

The lighting included in the PS1 games makes the character models definitely look better in the PS1 game but I don't like the backgrounds and the fact it's not like the MODEL 2 Arcade version which also didn't include light sourcing. So this makes the Saturn game for me the winner since it is much closer to the Arcade original
The PSX version looks very UGLY and Spastic. This is due to PSX's biggest problem in texturing and creating Affines and Backgrounds: Warping. No Anti Warping like Diffusion,Deflection,Multi Bending or Perspective Correction.
lol it doesn't look "ugly", instead it is much better than the saturn version, you're just crazy sega fanatic that's it.
Thank you so much! What an excellent video. Looks like it took hard work

PSX 512x480 30FPS

Model 2 version have no dynamic lighthing neither ...
ciredec Gellar true. But Virtua Fighter 2 already had more shadowing and better lighting.
a lot of other games shows Saturn's impressive 3D capacity
lol saturn is not more powerful than ps1, especially in 3D. PS1 is much better, not even comparable, you're just troll or sega fanbo y.
@@konstantinmfs2744 Saturn is a 64-bit Console with 4 MBs of VRAM. PS1 is a 32-bit Console with only 1 MB of VRAM.

Playstation had actual lighting, colored lighting, proper shading of the characters, and shadows. It's a very significant upgrade over the Saturn, which retains the flat, light-less, and incoherent look of the Model 2 version.
Caguei
doa on ps1 was based on another arcade version "dead or alive++".
You can make the same arguments for Saturn games that were ported poorly
It's tricky to tell but the Saturn version runs in a higher resolution too but all these video's are in tiny windows for no reason so its really hard to tell.
Saturn win, better resolution, far away better backgrounds, better pad. The PS version is good and have more characters. But the original one is better anyway. Even the creator of the game, Tomonobu Itagaki said that the Saturn version is the best home port of the game.
No, PS1 wins, the characters are bigger, the arts on character selection screen are much better and the shadow/lightning effects are extremely better.

Ps4 pro.system was copying saturn but with better hardware.
Saturn cenários são pré renderizados, muito bom mal nota cenários renderizados tempo real versão arcade, excepto animações saturn sao estático 😅
Hard to decide they both look gorgeous.
Other than that Saturn version is the better one, even though it has fewer polygons and worse lighting,
Sega Saturn is basically low end Model 2 hardware. Its System 32 with Model 2 3D technology.
Saturn doesn't have Model 2 level hardware. Its much weaker.
Saturn IS components of low end Model 2 hardware. The Difference between Saturn and Model 2 is like the difference between Ivy Bridge and Sandy Bridge.
Lol you say "saturn is better, even the graphics are worse", great logic.
Why didn't they add the exploding floor to the PlayStation version?
The first area didn't have an exploding floor, or at least it wasn't highlighted like the Saturn version.
It's there
Both looks fantastic
Saturn, most definitely. Saw a playthrough of it and fell in love. I really love the opponent defeat screen on Saturn. The intro is top notch too!
PS1 version is a shame. It shows perfectly the true face of Sony with its consoles, using blurry graphics and shadows to hide the bad graphics.
PS1 is a weaker console than Saturn.
ps1 doa certainly looks to be producing the better image to my eyes.
No. Not Really. Its just really shined up Software Engines.
As great as the Saturn version is, DoA is a fine example of Sega f**king up games for Saturn owners.
Refusing to export excellent games like this while PS1 effortlessly snaps up and churns out great games.
Why did the game turn out so different on the two systems to begin with anyway? Whats the reason for it ?
psx looks way better. the Saturn version the people look like blocks, very very block like. it looks so much smoother and realistic on psx and better lighting too.
No, no. The psx version is the one on the RIGHT. Clearly you must be confused.
Did you even watch the video? 🙄
Does anyone know of an example in a game?
they that confirmation sound effect in smash bros brawl (I dont know where in the game is it used but if you go to the sound test youll find it)
I think the PS-version looks better overall due to the much more convincing and beautiful lighting, which is completely absent on the saturn... again (must have been very hard to do on the saturn). Makes the saturn-version look very, very flat and almost boring compared to the atmospheric PS-version.
But I like how they used the saturn's VDP2 here with several independently scrolling and scaling 2D background-layers. Nice to see someone put that thing to good use.
Teextures vs. lightning and shading... Tough call. 🤔
I don't know why people always saying PlayStation version is so bad but for me I like PlayStation version because the music is awesome in ps1
The PS1 version isn't bad at all, i do think the Saturn version is a better but that doesn't mean that the PS1 version is bad, far away from that actually.
Saturn's port looks more cartoonised
The Saturn version is better, runs at 60 fps and have a bigger resolution, but it's not so noticeable like some people are saying, the biggest difference i see, it's the shading, who have much more contrast in the ps1, but this is just a design choice i think.
PS1 also runs at 60 fps, the character models are bigger and the lightning effects are much better. PS1 version is better.
@@konstantinmfs2744 There's no lighting effects on the PS1 version. And the Character models look AWFUL. They're stretched out and Papery looking.

I like both systems, i just admire Sega Saturn's more animated stage with glowing reds. Ps1 shading is nicer.
