I had the good fortune of seeing Boxcar Willie in concert probably over 30 times. I appreciate him even more now then I did then. Now that Country Music died about 25 years ago. Thank God for these videos
I was 17 yrs old when this legend walked in my dads restaurant the sharecroppers and still to this day I have his signed autographed picture this man was hilarious!
I am a country fan and I like the older country singers from the 60s and 70s the most... but BoxCAR Willie is super funny. does great imitations and can sing. really a class act. he passed away in 1999. He was really great.
Great to see that room full of WWII veterans and the people of the greatest generation! My buddy Al played for Boxcar for 7 years in the late 70's and early 80's. He said Willy was as great a person off the stage, as he was on it.
I worked in country music for 30 years as a sound engineer on a live radio show in wheeling WV. 2 longest live radio show broadcast in history. Second only to the Grand Ole Opry. I also worked with a regional sound company. I worked and seen this guys show so many times and it didn't matter how many times you had seen it. You still couldn't help but laugh. RIP box
When Boxcar Willie was in his 60's he became a superstar in...Ireland! He was everywhere TV concerts, festivals the lot!..Then he went and died and we sure missed him!
I would have to loved to have met Boxcar Willie and shake his hand. I grew up listening to Boxcar Willie only because my dad loved listening to his music. So now when I listen to Boxcar Willie and it brings back great memories of days gone by with my dad. Rest in Peace Lecil Travis Martin and God Bless.
Okay to all the "haters", Boxcar wasn't an impersonator, he was an entertainer. That's what he did to make people laugh and smile, act goofy. I didn't know Boxcar personally, but I knew him from living in the area for many years on Table Rock Lake. Guys like him are 1 in a million. He was also a dedicated American Patriot having served as a flight engineer. In his old museum there was a cockpit of a B-29 like he served on. It was sad to see his museum close and his things sold at auction just as was the old Roy Rogers museum here.
I worked for him at one of his hotels there and I did know him. He was an alright guy. I have a picture with him somewhere. I too lived in the Branson area
Saw him in Branson. Of all the different stars who had shows, Boxcar Willie was the only one I would not leave without seeing. I loved this man and his singing. He truly was an entertainer and yet an humble man. We got to meet him after his show and I asked if I could hug his neck. He just opened his arms and let me give him a big hug. I will never forget that moment.
It came through in his interaction with the audience, especially after his shows. Most entertainers would leave the stage and come back for a curtain call. They did not make themselves available to fans after the show. I love his music and still listen to him all these years later.
love him! he was hilarious,a good musician & always the best bandmates!! i'm a Jimi Hendrix,Doors,Cream 70's kid who loved Johnny,Willie,Waylon,Kris & Rita too.tx for posting Willie & his humor/good time shows, he was great!
Thank you so much for sharing! I hope he lives on from people like you that keeps his memory alive! He was truly great! There'll never be another like him! Thank you
Seen Box Car at the Hollow Inn one night, the friends I was with was having a really good time. So good the crowd got to watching them, then Box Car went off and said " Damn it sit down this is my show"
I'm so glad I saw this I forgot about Boxcar Willie I remember the Hee Haw days Roy Clark Buck Owens I don't play country music I'm more of a blues cat but I really do respect these old cronies classic pure class rest in peace Box Car you made me laugh today
I just had to click on this. I bought my first BW CD for $1 at a thrift store. I've been listening to nothing else in the truck for the last week. Great stuff.
I seen boxcar, Charlie pride, and some others when I was a kid at the pequea silver mines park in Lancaster county pa. great day swimming in the creek, touring the mine, and great music. fun day for all.
He was a king of mocking people, an awesome singer, songwriter & entertainer; & was overall hilarious. My Dad & I always loved watching him on TV & listening to his many albums as well. It always amazed me how he could make any sound a train could make with his own natural voice/vocals. He never used an special effects or microphone, either. All natural & very real mockeries. Amazing. He was definitely 1 of the most talented singers ever. :)
Don't normally post comments but will say that Boxcar Willie was a wonderful person. I worked with him back in the 70's when he was a DJ and he was the kind of person that would give you the shirt off his back.
Boxcar's humor in this video reminds me a bit of my great-grandpa's humor. My great-grandpa always says things backwards like he'd call Amarillo Armadillo and things like that. I've heard him do it so much that I've started doing it too. I bet I would have had a blast with Boxcar Willie if I had gotten the chance to meet him. Thankfully, my great-grandpa kinda looks like him and has a similar humor to him. I'm sure going to miss my great-grandpa when he passes away, but I pray that won't happen for long time
the BEST HOBO of his time and right now,, nobody can even copy him,,, ,,, wish he was still among us ,,, meet him one time at the fan fair and we talked few moments and i did a interview with him for the Country Gazette that time in 85, great times,,,
So-so impersonations but MAN what a performance!!! Absolutely hilarious!!! I'll bet if all those guys were in the front row, they'd be laughing so hard they'd be crying. Sure do miss him.

No one knew "The Box" more than me and Jerry Jones. We picked him up at Arizona Charlies in Las Vegas and drove him to Nellis AFB, NV where we introduced him to some Thunderbirds crew members. Then it was to Freedom Park where he bumped into a couple of Air Force pilots whom he crewed for while a crewman on one of their air refueling tankers. Jerry later journeyed to Branson, Mo., where The Box was a star and owned some property there. Jerry presented him with a singed lithos of the the USAF Thunderbirds. We never saw him again after that, for he had passed away. Tom Serres
So funny I saw this now, I haven't seen or heard Boxcar Willie in years. We lost our very lovable adopted stray cat just a couple of days ago. He had just started hanging around outside about 8 months ago and was pretty much wild. He was pretty skinny and didn't look healthy so, my wife started feeding him. It took a while before we could even touch him and for him to trust us. Then he turned into the sweetest, most vocal cat you could imagine and we were just at the point of going to get him fixed and letting him move in the house and he went missing for about 3 days. Turns out he had gotten hurt pretty bad and made his way home to us. I took him to the vet only to be told not only is he hurt really bad (a car, dog or something) but he has Kidney problems and Kitty AIDS and most likely wouldn't survive long and would suffer. So, I had to make that decision to let him go. Such a sad day. Anyway, sorry to ramble but the whole point to this was, we had named him "Boxcar Willie" because we said he was a Hobo. So it made me smile to see this randomly pop up on UA-cam. Thanks Boxcar you made my day.
I looked forward to seeing him every year at the Ft. Worth Livestock Show. A few times he did the train whistle in the barns and it was gloriously loud!
We met him, my grandmother, my mom and I at the hayloft saloon in Lansing Michigan. That was one of many fun nights we go out and enjoy seeing people that were country stars and imitators of country stars and all kinds of personalities three generations of girls out having fun

Boxcar Willie was a great entertainer. Had the luck to see him live many years ago - a memorable fun evening.

hes better than most singers and what not today. hilarious and cool dude. may God rest his soul.
It saddens me to see the comments that don't get Boxcar Willie. I'm a rock guy but I grew up with this stuff. The Grand Ol Opry and Hee-haw forever!

Wm Cottrell they don't make em like this anymore! talented and entertaining!
Wm Cottrell You can't explain anything to the now...Ignorant America! Offended, racist, and all that crap wasn't around during the years of Boxcar.
Maybe not an impersonator but that was a better Willie Nelson than Willie himself.
and the type of leukemia that he battle'd with (of what I have read) was one of the most painful.
