    I have been watching BYD for a while now. We have a KIA EV6 AWD which is a great car, but for our 2nd car, I am waiting for the BYD Shark to hit our shores. With BYD now adding 800VDC architecture and increased LFP Blade capacity in the 2025 models, I would not be surprised if BYD becomes the market leader in Australia.

      The issue is none of the BYD cars excel in anything. Low energy density battery, less efficient, heavy, less frequent software updates, slow charging to name a few. I am hoping with the new battery, it will become more competitive.

      Funny you should mention EVs in Greece. Heading over next month and hiring a car for a two-day return trip from Athens to Chalcis, where we intend to intend to drive around Euboea for those two days. However, looks like the EV infrastructure in Euboea is very minimal, with the public chargers which do exist limited to 20 MW stations. Does that sound right in your experience of charging in Greece? Also, hiring a car for a day to drive around Crete later in the trip. Efharisto

    Good review Tom, your reviews are worth a lot more than most, because you review it based on the way you use it, which is how most people use an EV. V2L is another huge plus of this vehicle. I had a 5-hour power outage this week and was able to power my living room as normal from my Seal and carry on with what I was doing, with TV etc. in the background (while the rest of the neighbourhood was in pitch-black darkness). V2L also means I've been able to get rid of all my gas gear and go fully electric (induction hob, lights, fridge, coffee machine) for day trips and car-camping. Although the car REALLY needs a 'CAMPING MODE' where it can continuously supply 12 VDC (for fridge) and 5 VDC (USB) when the car is locked/unattended - powered from the more efficient DC-DC converter rather than the inefficient DC-AC inverter. (Just having the V2L adapter plugged into the car, even with no 240VAC devices plugged in, uses ~2kWh per day, which is a high overhead when just charging a phone or running an efficient 240VAC/12VDC fridge).

    Good to hear that there are no regrets Tom :)
    I bought my Performance knowing about the Telsa Supercharger network issue, it wasn't a deal breaker then, but very glad to hear that it's going to be attended to.
    Charging by solar is good though our solar system is coming on 9 years old now, has paid for itself well & truly but would need an upgrade to be more efficient with the car charging. As it is, we have single phase wiring at home (coming on 70 year old house) & without rewiring the house, the best the installed wallcharger will do is about 4kw (better than the trickle charger) at 20amps, so not going to hit that 7kw max the Seal can take. Again, it's how the house is wired, a known issue, not a deal breaker & has never made me have to run down to a local DC charger. Just needs a bit of active manual monitoring during the day when working from home (eg., taking advantage of a daylight free period from my energy retailer) & setting up the midnight to 6am charge as needed.
    The only issue I have with the Seal isn't mine but that of my partner who is in the market for a car now that her Audi has had the last rites, but she won't look at an EV, despite her acknowledged comfort & performance of the Seal as a passenger, she wants gears, tactile dials & analogue speedo etc, not touchscreens & digital displays. That's another battle for another day, lol.
    So I knew what I was getting when I put the order in just before Christmas last year & how the car is 5 months later after delivery has only gotten better :) And when 2403 is installed & the Supercharging fix installed, it will be better again.
    Think of how many other cars you can hand on heart say are better 6 months after you bought them (without spending a lot of money in aftermarket parts), that would be a very small list

    The lease on my ICE car is ending early next year. Got the option to pay the balloon and keep the car or sell it and get a new car. Thinking of a change like an EV car which make sense on a new lease as there is currently no GST on EV and there is FBT exemption, that is the repayment is 100% deducted before taxable income for the duration of the lease which considerably reduce the cost of the EV. On the other side i have to think if its better to have an ICE or EV vehicle in terms of battery safety, ongoing cost (Insurance, Servicing, battery replacement etc.). Too much to think about for someone who hasn't drive an EV yet. While i have no doubt Tesla engineering is top notch, I kinda find inside a bit boring. I would prefer to have a Heads up display which i'm use to with my current car and also the console behind the steering wheel. I don't want to take my eyes off the road to watch the centre console everytime how fast i'm going. People say you'll get use to it but I don't think I will. Hopefully Model Y Juniper will bring some changes to my liking. If it is, then Tesla will be my first choice, otherwise will look into other model. I have been looking the Polestar 4 and will be interested to see what Xpeng and Sealion has to offer. Any good advice from you Tom?

      He actually quite likes the car. His criticism was very specific, related to the lack of adequate cooling of the battery during DC fast charging. That said, the overall average charge rate for the Seal during his test was still high enough to have it rank reasonably well across all the cars he has tested.

    • @GDM22
      @GDM22 3 місяці тому +2

      @@vasil7410 I haven't watched his 1000km challenge yet, but I noticed in the other test he did recently the temnparature of the battery cells as an average between the minimum and maximum was probably lower than the Tesla over the charging curve, it was also only marginally slower to fully charge it compared to the NMC long range Tesla. When he craps on about rapid gating whenever he tests BYD products it just seems like a bit of an overreach and beatup to me. Tesla's whilst they don't charge particulalrly quickly are very efficient though so will travel further on a given charge which is also critical in the 1000km review.

    BYD should hire some western educated staffs to fasttrack their infotainment and user interface system. Chinese market and western market mindset are completely different and not everything is as simple as just a language conversion. The innuendos are different. It may take them another 12-18 months to make it industry standard according to west's standard which they will have to in order to increase their export.
    I test drove the Seal for Malaysian market couple weeks ago and you can feel the quirkiness in the user interface immediately, not an issue if you have intereact with their cars in their native language like me who stays a couple months a year in Shenzhen/Guandong but even in Malaysia they local buyers consists of ethnic Chinese and Malays are complaining the un-user friendly interface.

Agree with you on the sound, it needs more clarity and precense in mids and highs. Lane keeping is ok but as a previous tesla owner I totaly agree with you. Highway no problems for me but yeah others roads are hit or miss.

      the other thing is , humans do not do well doing half tasks , if relying on the vehicle to do half the work humans tend to have the mind. wander off , lose alertness , and spatial awareness which is extremely dangerous , because when things go pear shaped and the car tries to steer you off road or phantom brake on a freeway..

    My experience 5 months in with the seal premium is similar to yours. Now about 11000km on the clock as a daily commuter Wollongong to Sydney and my only real gripe (aside from the traffic sign alerts, thank god I will be able to turn that off permanently soon!) is also the ICC. It has most definitely improved significantly from the suicidal state it was in originally and I am comfortable enough to use it on a straightish road, but a big issue I still have is that when you change lanes with ICC on it will assertively turn the wheel to (over-)"correct" your position in the lane (and then complain that you're out of the lane when it does over-correct), so need to make sure I have a prepared grip on the wheel. Otherwise amazing car, and I hope they keep iterating on that ICC as it has a lot of potential.

    How much dies it cost to charge per 100km range?

    • @LudicrousFeed
      @LudicrousFeed  Місяць тому +2

      In Australia, it depends on where and when you charge …
      Scenario 1: At home, if you’re charging from solar - it’s essentially 5c/kWh x ~15-17 kWh/100km efficiency = 75-85c
      Scenario 2: Specialised EV plan (Origin,
      Ovo, AGL) - 8c/kWh x ~15-17kWh/100km = $1.20-$1.36
      Scenario 3: Public DC charging can be up to ~80c/kWh x 15-17kWh = $12-$13.60
      And everything in between!
