Thank you for the honest review, Chinese car makers are catching up or surpassing some European automakers. This is a competition on a globally scale and the consumers are loving it. Great review man.
Why do not use Voice control system to control Temperature , window , sunroof ??? That is why these Chinese Car cut off most of physical buttons in the Cars !!! Or the Aus market do not have this function ???
I think it's because most Western cars came out with voice control 15 years ago and it was terrible and thus never have tried it again since on newer cars as they already expect it to be poor.
I took the Sealion 6 Premium for a test drive and would say your review is very accurate. Compared to the Seal, I liked that this had an integrated shade for the panoramic roof (not so fussed that the sunroof opened - just something to leak over time), but the seats lack any lumbar support adjustment. The integrated instrument panel rather than the “tablet” style of the Seal is also better in my opinion. One thing I did notice on my drive was a low frequency resonance in the cabin at highway speeds. A kind of thrumming noise. Possibly caused by the choice of tyres. It was something I told the dealer I wouldn’t be able to live with. Hopefully it is only the tyres, because otherwise this is great car for the price. Particularly for places like Australia, where a pure EV struggles to make sense.
Not by accident either, most chinese cars (including military vehicles) are reverse engineered clones of mainstream Western, Euro and Jap manufactures just built using inferior parts and minimal quality control. That's why they're so cheap and also shit.
Yes, it is the best hybrid considering it has leading efficiency, very usable electric only range, extremely nice interior. Its just better in everyway that really matters to an average driver. Most of those Chinese brands cars have quite responsive voice control system, which most Chinese customers use it instead of using the screen, for functions like air conditioner, navigation etc, very practical especially when you are driving. Was about to order a Model Y, but the turning circle on them is a total joke. By far the worst in the mid-SUV category. It's like a metre worse than a Prado!!! So I drove a Sea Lion 6 and it has all the cool Tesla stuff, AND all kinds of things that the Tesla just doesn't have - like a 360 camera, a dashboard, a HUD, a puncture kit, a shade for the huge glass sunroof. And it's cheaper. And it does 1000ks on a tank plus charge. And you can take into a usual Sydney carpark and not have to 4 point turn... Now take all that awesomeness of the Sealion 6 and compare it to the usual ulta-boring mid-size SUV market.... This car is an absolute category killer for the mid-size SUV market.
The 6.9l/100km was achieved but electricity was used too, how much? A challenge: Top up battery and fossil tank. Reset trip to zero. Drive in EV range until ICE cuts inbattery is at 25%. Then keep driving but in HEV until your trip meter is at 200km. Fill up with 95RON and note battery percentage. Give us how many litres used and how many kWh used let me do the maths please. Foolhardy to say the SL6 only uses about 1 litre extra per 100km without quantifying it with a real world test. Especially as all litres used cost circa ten percent more each per litre. Five litres of 91 @$1.80/l is $9.00 if this SL6 quotes 1.4l/100km but achieves 5.6l @$2/l is $11.20 or 24.4% more expensive to drive 'x metres'. Plus all electricity depleted from the battery. BTW 425l is the boot size which is smaller than Atto 3! Load is limited in SL6 to about 410kg (33% less) compared to 605kg for Outlander PHEV which is SL6 nearest and best selling market leader of this niche.

Japanese cars are more expensive not because of build quality or materials, as we all know they are glued together plastic junks. They are expensive because consumers have no choices.
I’m a tall driver with the need for lots of driver seat leg room. I would like to see that aspect included in your reviews and not just the usual rear leg room section.
I was reading the owners manual and saw that it is able to generate power when a low State of Charge is detected. Has anyone tried this for VTOL car camping or emergency situation? If this is viable then with some napkin math the Sealion 6 Power storage capacity would be around 18.3kwh + 30%*(60L x 8.9kwh/l) = 178.5kwh.
@@Mububban23 I certainly don't need a spare around the city, so why would I want to pay for one as part of the purchase price. The change in name from Seal to Sea Lion might indicate that BYD is considering sending the new Qin L PHEV sedan to Australia in the future, since it is also sold in China as the Seal 06. If you like sedans, the Seal 06 is easily the most efficient mid size sedan in the world right now, getting into the 2.x L/100km in city driving.
The emergence of this car in China, which accounts for one-third of the global automotive market, quickly pushed the previously best-selling German and Japanese cars into a corner. The current sales of these models have sharply declined by more than 65%, and their prices have also dropped by more than 40%. Even the prices of second-hand cars from these brands have collapsed.
How about its durability and how many shops know how to work on them and how easy are they to work on and how about parts availability vs the Toyota RAV4?
That's my main concern with BYD and other brands new to Australia - what's their spare parts inventory like and what is their company ethos re warranty and support? Brands like VW and Ford have terrible reputations here for appalling customer service.
Confused !! Took one for a test drive last week and the BYD guy was adamant that at no stage does the ICE drive the wheels, its ONLY a generator, when you plant your foot and you hear the engine come to life its actually only putting more juice into the battery. at ALL times the electric motors powers the car forward. So.. who is correct ? daddy or BYD guy ?
Daddy is right. It acts mostly as a Series, but will turn to a parallel when extra grunt is required from the motor. It’s what’s known as a “series-parallel hybrid”, where opposite to Toyota’s series parallel hybrid, it is series first, parallel second.
Looking like one wouldn’t be too terrible- sea lions are sleek- but if it sounded like one and barked all the way down the road? That’d be a deal breaker.
Looks good, except: 1. The untidy undercarriage. It looks very messy. 2. Power to load missing? Can't we move beyond 12V? 3. No heat pump. Should be standard. 😊 What's the towing like?
this is enticing to say the least. But how may the maintenance of this may be? Is it as high as other hybrids? I've heard it doesn't have a gearbox. Really contemplating on this one.

Rear windows go all the way down, cruise control works well although sometimes slows down when it doesn't need to, no annoying noises when reversing
Took one for a test drive today, super impressed
Just saw one of these st chaddy on the weekend, impressed by the interior quality materials
The Atto 3 just received an OTA update which includes a 3 finger swipe on the screen horizontally to change the fan speed and a 3 finger swipe vertically to change the temperature. No doubt the sealion is getting the same update. But you can just use the voice assistant; you can say "I'm hot" or "I'm cold" etc
My dad had one. The middle-aged men and Uber drivers are the main customers for BYD.
It does come with voice control. I guess its a matter of habits, I have Seal for 2 months now but I haven't used the voice control yet.
No,they cut buttons like most manufacturers to cut cost (Tesla went insane with that) and i dont like it
Sunroof has physical buttons
I think it's because most Western cars came out with voice control 15 years ago and it was terrible and thus never have tried it again since on newer cars as they already expect it to be poor.
And the FBT exemption for PHEV under novated lease must end 30 June 2025. What a great timing to secure one in this financial year.
April 1
Draft bill has been presented to Senate to extend exemption to 2030 🤞
That Outlander kinda looks ancient. 🤦
Very boring exterior design. Lovely cabin inside though.
Particularly for places like Australia, where a pure EV struggles to make sense.
i know the thrumming noise come from, lots of Chinese owner suffered it,it need to change the rubber ring under rearview mirror
你可以换个好轮胎来解决你的问题
The front look like the Cayenne. I would buy this over the Rav4 prime in a heartbeat. Too bad it's not coming to Canada. I can only dream...😢
Warm tip🤣
As a Chinese, sorry for the poor translation.
Please forgive us, and we'll learn and do better next time😅
Actually not bad, warm tips are better than hot tips, give us reasons not to touch hot tips when it is just a warm tip.
wrgg, no such thing as chinx or etc or badx engx about itx or sorx or et, peuxuax, outx, cna outx etc nay nwm s perfx
I like the mistranlation. I think it add character to the car. I use warm tip now, everyone knows where thats from.
你要求原谅别带上我,比亚迪做的汽车翻译不好应该道歉,你喜欢跪也可以道歉,但是别代表中国人道歉OK?中文不好是我们的问题?
Actually I like "Warm Tips" over "Hot Tips". Warm Tips are more laid back and less in your face. An anternative could be "Hint".
I’ve been looking forward to this one. Love its mean face. Love its price. Love love love what you get for that price. I’m looking at my next car.
Me too!
Yes, this car is perfect, thank you for the review I understand what the sealion is all about😅
Nice review love the shitting bricks hand gesture 😂
Thanks for the video
IT LOOKS LIKE HALF PIECE ALMOST PORSCHE CAYENNE
Not by accident either, most chinese cars (including military vehicles) are reverse engineered clones of mainstream Western, Euro and Jap manufactures just built using inferior parts and minimal quality control. That's why they're so cheap and also shit.
the worst porsche
Nope! It looks good, in its unique way
Incredible to see how the US and AU car markets diverge, 100% tariffs vs free trade.
Yes, it is the best hybrid considering it has leading efficiency, very usable electric only range, extremely nice interior. Its just better in everyway that really matters to an average driver. Other media companies given it a so so score due to its advertising commitments with the established lagacy auto, but Car source is doing the unbiased reporting.
I'm buying one soon
Why?...serious question.
@markdotcomau it's my choice my money and there is nothing wrong with the car it's dumb people like you makes them bad so get lost

Most of those Chinese brands cars have quite responsive voice control system, which most Chinese customers use it instead of using the screen, for functions like air conditioner, navigation etc, very practical especially when you are driving. Do they not convert it into English version, or you guys are not used to it?
Pretty sure the answer is the latter. They kinda freak out immediately when no AC control buttons/dials are in sight.
@@Deandzzzzzz Ahh..... Make sense then. They should really try getting used to it, voice control is much safer than touch buttons or screen.
That is quite a feat as Mandarin spoken in many regions with local dialects would be very difficult to adjust to.
@@northernsamba7388 I remember seeing a video, it was a Geekr, you can talk to it even with Cantonese, so I guess dialects are not that difficult for them to deal with.😂
@@Deandzzzzzz Certain controls, often used ones like, volume, temperature, demisting, wipers, hi/lo beam overrides are better kept separate for rapid use. I don't like controls on a car presented to me like it is a mobile phone with Apps.
If those aircon and heating seat are annoying, you can just use the voice commands. Either set temperature to xxx or turn on/off the heated seat. Or you say i am hot/cold
Market competition...is what the consumers want. The fiercer, the better... Consumers love it.
The BYD front remind me of a Porsche Macan.
Matt just posted it when I was searching for a video of this car.
Matt, great review. How did you find lower back support ? since adjustable lumbar is not a feature.
Thank you! Honestly fine, spent a 3 hour stint driving and didn’t have an issue
@@CarSauce Thanks mate. I am buying the AWD one with the white interior which looks great.
The 6.9l/100km was achieved but electricity was used too, how much?
A challenge:
Top up battery and fossil tank.
That looks great inside and out. Great price too!
Really looking forward to the Sealion 7 EV - This may be the EV we end up buying
The Sealion 07 EV is BYD's model with the best quality! In China, it only costs $27k to $34k!
BYD Sea Lion 07EV Technology Experience Co Creation Camp:ua-cam.com/video/OC0Ed9teUUQ/v-deo.html
But, Zeekr 7X and Avita 07 are better!😅
Thanks for the review! ⚡👍🏻
It's good that the finally removed the “build your dream” line of words on the tail of the car 😂
How well will this car Tow and how good is the AWD on Snow. I have been a Subaru AWD driver my whole life with several cars over the years and this is the first Brand that has tempted me to convert, would love to hear from owners? How is it on the Snow? and towing? I am thinking of converting to BYD based on the specs
I would love to hear the answer to his as well.
The AC temperature of BYD car can be changed or set by voice control.
You can use 3-Fingers swipe on screen anywhere, in order to change aircon settings. :)
Japanese cars are more expensive not because of build quality or materials, as we all know they are glued together plastic junks. They are expensive because consumers have no choices.
The Japanese car manufacturers cash in on built in brand loyalty, too- just like banks, insurers, electricity suppliers etc, etc.
I’m a tall driver with the need for lots of driver seat leg room. I would like to see that aspect included in your reviews and not just the usual rear leg room section.
lmao 1:20 " I just swallowed a fly" LMAO
I was reading the owners manual and saw that it is able to generate power when a low State of Charge is detected. Has anyone tried this for VTOL car camping or emergency situation? If this is viable then with some napkin math the Sealion 6 Power storage capacity would be around 18.3kwh + 30%*(60L x 8.9kwh/l) = 178.5kwh.
You said suitable for Australia. No spare and rediculasly huge sunroof make it not suitable for Australia. 😊
Comes with a shade curtain thing under the sunroof, what is not to like!
He did mention the crappy tyres.. it is suitable for Australia alright.. lots of dumb people with lots of cash..
Have to find something to whinge about. Buy a spare if you need one, ffs.
@@GDM22 and put it where? Does the boot liner come out to fit a spare? If so, why not provide that as standard for all?
@@Mububban23 I certainly don't need a spare around the city, so why would I want to pay for one as part of the purchase price. Plenty of new cars now only provide a tyre repair kit, I have watched numerous youtube videos of aftermarket spare tyre kits being reviewed. If you go on a longer drive and you are worried pack it in and yes there are some EVs that do fit a space saver spare under the boot shelf, so don't take space awy from the normal boot area. If a spare is important for you look elsewhere.
No spare/space saver is a no deal for long road trips, unfortunately.
True if Toyota not fired its higher and middle management then they are next NOKIA by BYD
I normally say plug in hybrids are the worst of both worlds 😂 Personally, I'd be baffled why someone would buy this over a $55k Tesla Model Y... but I'm biased. None the less, appreciate the awesome review as always dude !
这台车在中国售价是1.7万美元
@RyanCowan - wouldn't the purchasing decision be based on range?
Can't wait for sea lion 6 with DM5. 46% thermal efficiency is far greater efficiency than most base load power plant + transmission/ conversion losses at 35% thermal efficiency
VW sells the Tiguan PHEV for 49k euros in Europe, if this goes across sea ain't no way it's going to cheaper than 50k usd. The limited run RAV 4 Prime also was above 50k (yes i know msrp was lower but demand was so high and car dealers were upcharging people). This without a doubt don't have a proper competitor.
The Model in the Video, in Germany called the BYD Seal U DMi Design, costs 44500€ including VAT, and is in my opinion much nicer than the Tiguan.
Bring your dollars, looks ok
On bilibili there's a meme says giti tyre has saved bro Chuanfu's life(BYD's CEO) so that every byd car use giti tyres😂.Even 300k+ yuan Fangchengbao use giti tyre.
Wondering price comparison between this SUV vs BYD Seal ? Look forward to seeing this model shipped to Indonesia. ❤
I just hate no separate head rests. Tall people problems.
Yep, I had that problem in the Atto 3. The headrest would dig into my shoulders, then tried the Dolphin and had no such problems as the headrest was just ever so slightly taller! It would be interesting to see if the Seal or this also has this problem. I am 188cm tall
Does it have a heat pump? Does it start the ice engine when you put the heating on? What's the warranty period?
Finally a car the ticks ALL the boxes!
For a $4000 difference definitely go for the AWD.
Very funny way in introducing Sealion 6 , well done 👏
@@CarSauce cheers daddy
That's good and all but it doesn't look at all like a sea lion. Jokes aside, it looks like the nicest BYD yet.
Looking like one wouldn’t be too terrible- sea lions are sleek- but if it sounded like one and barked all the way down the road? That’d be a deal breaker.
actually, it does.. when mine arrives, I'll call it "Whiskers"
Looks good, except:
1. The untidy undercarriage. It looks very messy.
2. Power to load missing? Can't we move beyond 12V?
3. No heat pump. Should be standard. 😊
What's the towing like?
It has P2L
In Europe this model has Michelin tyres.
In Sweden, this car is Electric only and still has the name Seal-U and should be able to drive 310miles (WLTP)
It’s a great looking Car- this vs Outlander vs Ravi 4 but Toyota don’t bring the phev to AU.
this is enticing to say the least. But how may the maintenance of this may be? Is it as high as other hybrids? I've heard it doesn't have a gearbox. Really contemplating on this one.
Perfect timing, a UA-cam ad came on when you swallowed the bug 😂😂😂
If you want something similar in a full EV and can wait until next year, look at the Sealion 7.
Really nice car and good review!~~
Sounds pretty good but I will wait at least 6pm this for real world use
This is the Song Plus (aka Seal U, sealion 6) originally introduced 2020, what we have here is the 2023 facelift. The song range is the biggest seller for BYD between 60k-80k sold each month.
You need the EV indicator to be atleast 90% to do the max result for the launch test.
You can control the AC from the steering wheel btw, and also where is the parking brake in this car?
Alternatively use the 3-finger touch gesture or voice commands. Either option makes physical buttons / dials unnecessary.
I was so hoping the BEV version of this would come to Australia
Actually the better SEALION 7 is coming up later this year
@@Deandzzzzzz oh. Good to know. Thank you! I think I’m about a year away from taking the plunge. Need to get solar installed first, but have to get some red tape sorted out before I can do that. I’m hoping that by the time I’m ready, the perfect car for me will have been released.
If you compare to RAV4, you need to compare to PHEV variant. It's very close in performance and AWD too.
No PHEV RAV4 on sale in Australia
How does it compare with the RAV4 XSE that you did a review on a few months ago?
At this price point its an amazing car.
Did you test any Xpeng? The G9, G6 or X9, or P7i? The design is good the appearance reaély nice at first, but not as qispizatibe as even the cheap G6...
...
if you are comparing it to a RAV4 other car companies are in trouble !!!!!! maybe thats why Toyota is working with BYD. i just purchased 400 shares of BYD motors even tho i'm not into EV's or plug-in hybrids and i have a 2022 Toyota Venza and actually the sealion looks like my Venza. i think theirs no limit to where BYD is going thats why i spent 25,000 dollars on 416 share because i believe BYD will make me rich.
If I may request, perhaps can suggest to BYD to upgrade the regenerative braking to OPD as in Tesla and most other EVs? Thanks
So Cool!
I'm a retired electronics importer here is OZ. My experience with Chinese manufacturers is poor. They don't have enough regard for quality and reliability as a general rule There great wall twin cabs have been here for years and have a lousy reputation but thats not to say they are not improving. I'll wait a few years and probably buy a RAV 4 in the near future.
The key is "retired" if you aren't paying attention to chinese manufacturing every 6 months, things change way too fast over there. Cars produced post 2022 are a generation or two better than the pre 2019 cars.
I had to laugh at the wait a few years and buy a rav4 comment, because Toyota is going to use BYD hybrid tech in their cars from 2026.
I think u should talk abt the drivetrain, power figures and Engines when ur driving as u r running out of things to talk when driving
Patiently waiting for the BYD Sea Lion 7
Sea lion 7ev is on sale in China.
