You're doing good work. These parents would be totally screwed without shops like yours. It's so crazy that everybody-even kids-needs a laptop these days, but nobody knows how to fix them and shops like yours are few and far-between. Also, thanks for reminding me that I need to replace the thermal paste on my Alienware laptop. Anybody have recommendations on what brand thermal paste is best for laptops these days?
PTM7950 off of LTT store. Its manufactured by honeywell for industrial purposes, but I guess someone figured it was good for laptops too. Its different than paste but seems to be the best choice for laptops. It also seems to have a higher lifespan than thermal paste. PTM also gets better over time as you throw more cooling and heating cycles at it
Mr NJB! I really enjoy and appreciate the work you do. For your Alienware laptop thermal solution, I'd recommend using Honeywell PTM 7950, a thermally conductive phase change material. PTM 7950 comes in a thin sheet as opposed to a paste in a tube. Its biggest selling point is its endurance to many heating and cooling cycles since it is designed for industrial applications so it should likely outlast other products and not need to be replaced as soon. Salem Techsperts uses it frequently for CPU and GPU laptop cooling and have several shorts and long form videos where they use it on Alienware laptops. As PTM 7950 became popular in the last few years, it was difficult to find and the biggest concern was buying it from shady online retailers and sellers who were potentially selling counterfeit Honeywell PTM 7950. Linus Tech Tips (another popular channel) sells genuine Honeywell PTM 7950 on their website (and has videos on using it properly), and Salem Techsperts has affiliate links to buy Honeywell PTM 7950 in their Amazon store, which you can find links to on their main page and linktree, if you’d rather purchase it on Amazon since Linus Tech Tips only ships from Canada. Honeywell PTM 7950 can be a little fragile when handling it at room temperature (because it can tear easily) so many users recommend putting it in the refrigerator or freezer to harden it up a little before handling it, cutting it to size, and applying it. If you’d really want to use paste, Honeywell makes two paste versions PTM 7950-SP (good) and 7958-SP (better). Kingpin Cooling’s KPx thermal paste is a little expensive but also very good. As you may already know iFixit has a lot of great tutorials on their website and youtube for doing DIY work on laptops and other electronics. Also, Parts-People works exclusively on Dell laptops and has many guides on working on Alienware laptops on their website and youtube channel.
I personally use Corsair thermal paste but make sure you look up if your laptop uses a liquid metal instead, using normal thermal paste will destroy your laptop

The many deaths of Long Bone Lupe (today): -gooch contaminated toothbrush -applying pressure to a (damaged?) laptop battery You guys keep this up and maybe between the two of you, you'll beat Kenny McCormick's record!
Coming from someone that used to be in the industry, I feel your pain. I used to work for Hamilton Computer Repairs in Worcester which is the highest rated local repair shop in Worcester County. We definitely felt the rush being in between WPI and Clark University. It's definitely difficult to keep up sometimes during September, especially considering the high number of students that use MacBooks. They're customers that want the cheapest repairs on the most expensive devices. Andy, if you're reading this - I head up to Salem every now and again to visit my partner. I'd love to visit your shop sometime while I'm there. Your videos are great and I was stoked when I found out you were based in Mass. Oh also ... Long-bone Lupe
Long Bone Lupe! Where I used to work the back to school rush was second worse time of the year for people being "I need x and I need it now!" Christmas was the worst! Hope your week goes well and the Gooch dust is minimal.
I've been around stripped fasteners for quite some time now working on 40+ year old equipment in the military. Another go to solution for slightly stripped fasteners is to use a piece of your glove between the screwdriver and fastener. The correct sized tool and a bit of rubber makes all the difference 😉
When I worked downtown I loved telling tourists that most of the trials actually happened in Danvers and Peabody. The disappointment in their faces made my day.
man the struggle is real.. im dealing with 5 different laptop today.. 3 are easy to fix 2 are having motherboard defect.. now i have to wait 14 days of mainboard shipping while my customers are whining.
I feel your pain man. Honestly, people don't realize how stressful it is mentally having to wait on parts and be at the complete mercy of a supplier. God forbid the part is late or defective.
i love long bone lupe, but i can't imagine people with broken computers that wait until like a week before school to fix their stuff when the parts they need to fix said stuff can take weeks or even months to arrive from acreoss the world or wherever. you guys are doing god's work out here!
This is why one shouldn't buy consumer rubbish and just stick with business class laptops as spares are much easier to come by never mind often cheaper.
Long bone lupe. Stumbled across your channel several months ago when searching youtube for thermal pad advice. It's a sexy topic, so that must be why I was directed here. It's nice when the algorithm understands and provides. Sometimes not always what you ask for, but always what you need. Came for the pads, stayed for the highly entertaining BS you produce. Love from the UK - peace ✌🏼
Its the same when it comes to auto repair shops. Like you stated, one of the most annoying is customers going back to school (especially for me and my coworkers on college students vehicles). The amount of waiting till the last minute to get their vehicles serviced before they have to either make the trip back to their respected universities or colleges does boggle the mind, heck me and the other techs in my position always make the MPI as simple and easy to digest for them for service that can wait till later on to get done and others that need to be handled very soon so it keeps them and others safe.
Yup! I always make the comparison between what I do and what auto repair shops do, we are at the mercy of the customer and our parts suppliers. But in terms of labor times, you guys have it SO MUCH WORSE. I have insane respect for auto technicians.
For stripped screws, I like to use a slightly sharp flat head and tap the edge of the screw counter-clockwise. The screw heads are usually mallable where the flat head start chisselling into the edge and forcing the screw to rotate. I tap the flat head screw driver while it is making contact on the screw. It's a fine art of hard taps enough to cause the screw to rotate and soft enough that you don't send the flat head into the motherboard. Just an FYI :)
Student IT at a high school, was repairing broken middle school chromebooks and 7 of them had a wrapper shoved in the charging port. It was the same wrapper too I have no clue why they did this.
Yeah some kids just don't care about stuff that isn't theirs. I work in the tech department at a school district. A couple of years ago, we had an interesting trend with Chromebook damage. Some kid thought it would be cool to pick off the lock screen key from their Chromebook. The first few times, I didn't think much of it, but I started seeing the same key missing across multiple classrooms over the next several weeks. I guess the kid started telling his friends and classmates to do the same across multiple devices. At the time, the Chromebooks weren't checked out to any student so it was impossible to say who started it.

ERM ACTUALLY 🤓👆his name isnt salem.salem is the city where the shop is .weve heard a few times in his vids and in his channel bio that his name is actually Andy
Another tactic for stripped screws (depending on the severity) is putting some permatex valve grinding compound (pink tube) on the end of your bit before applying pressure and unscrewing. A lot of the things I work on use hex or allen head, and if they start to strip, sometimes using a similar sized torx bit can do the trick too. My last resort is taking a dremel to it and turning it into a flat head or drilling it out. Hope some of that helps; thanks for the hours of entertainment.
I'm not sure what I love more about this video: the "Gooch Collector" background, or the different stuff in your trunk every day. It's almost as good as Long Bone Lupe is (in your mom's bed, of course).
Being a technician, an RMA and Courier in-out person I can relate to this A LOT. Especially the annoying top case / C-Shell replacements or faulty mainboards that take like 5 billion lightyears from a galaxy far far away.
I don't own a repair shop but I do know a thing or two about computers and I've been getting people asking for repairs, upgrades, cleanups and even purchasing advice for the past month now.
Hey Salem.I was inspired by you to finally use my computer properrly and try to fix it myself(Even though it was already dead when I opened it,the second time I opened it I didnt tightened heatsink well so it almost died completely) But this 2011 model Lenovo B560 doesnt have 29 chinese bitcoin viruses and actually runs decent thanks to you And again, thank you to inspire me into computer world
For badly stripped heatsink screws, there's a thing called screw pliers. Won't work if you can't grab the screw obviously but I get loads of these HPs at work with the stripped screws. Screw pliers still let me take them out just fine with only marginally more effort. I got them for christmas ages ago. One of the best christmas gifts I've received as an adult.
Respect. It's one thing to have the patience to tackle computer hardware issues from people who don't know anything about the computers they use daily. It's another thing to have to put up with their bullshit when the problem isn't fixed in a timeframe that seems reasonable only to the uneducated. Keep up the good work!

It's a great hobby and can be a good side hustle, and you may be able to make a living off building custom PC's, but you'd need to be at a pretty large scale to make it worth your time. Thanks for watching!
If you REALLY want to get into IT, go for enterprise support. As important as repair technicians are for the general public, fixing regular people's computers is really tough. I did it for a while as a side hustle when I was first getting into IT. I've been in the industry for 10 years now, and I don't even work on computers anymore. I'm an infrastructure administrator, so I'm working on virtual servers and cloud administration. Depending on where you live, working for your state government is a great IT career. I'm in California, so we're union and have pensions.

I'm glad long bone lupe survived his confrontation with the goochbrush
It was a close call
Finally watched one of your full length vids, been checking out the shorts for a while, and I've got to say I enjoy watching you work sir. I've been working on PC's since I was a teenager (I'm halfway to ancient now) and I still learn things from your videos. Keep up the good work and keep an eye on that toothbrush! Also Long Bone Lupe
My mom is sad that her saxophone lesson schedule has changed.
Lol
She liked her saxophone lessons too😂
Hats off to you sir, giving repair advice, purchasing advice, and life-attitude advice all in one-video!
My uncle used to work with computers like this, as well as simply selling parts. He had to make the choice between staying and living here where it's cheap and the place is beautiful, but there aren't enough people/customers to make his shop viable, or move his entire family somewhere he can actually make a living doing it because there are plenty of customers, but living there would be way more expensive anyway.
He found a job as a bus driver instead.
This is spot-on. I'm glad he found a better career but I hope he still enjoys it as a hobby
@@SalemTechsperts He's still the go-to tech guru in my cousins house. He has more time with it now when he has retired too.
Mhm for sure. I grew up in the boston area as well. Nowadays it's just so ridiculously expensive for towns that aren't even all that close to the city. Salem is like a 30+ min drive away and still so expensive 13:21 I mean hell even Danvers average home price is close to 600k minimum
5 seconds in and already a mom joke.
Love it

I lov how you gave us some actual good tips about pc repair and building while also making the content enjoyable!

I’m in 8th grade too! I repair technology every now and then, but I’m good at it
It's cool to see 8th graders getting to know how to repair their own stuff
I love how candid you are in your long form videos. And I hope the revenue from the channel is helping offset the financial/mental stress of running the shop.
As much as I LOVE the short, the long vids are appreciated to, because the more I know the more I learn!
Thank you for saying what you said about RGB lighting. I've been an actual tech for multiple years and got into this back in 2008 as an actual repair tech and I hate when everybody will make purchases based on the whole premise of having RGB lighting. It's inside your desktop you are not even going to see it most the time and odds are you'll be the only one that knows it's there unless you point it out. I know when RDB first hit the scene that everybody wanted it it had horrible controller systems that were resource hogs and I replace a lot of PSU's due to that fact back in the day. At first man I didn't like your channel all that much but it's starting to grow on me because it's reminding me that I was in those same shoes and went through the same things. Keep it up buddy!

PTM also gets better over time as you throw more cooling and heating cycles at it
skibidi toilet

You guys keep this up and maybe between the two of you, you'll beat Kenny McCormick's record!
You'll fix that Chromebook and you'll like it, mister.
Ironically I refuse Chromebook's because my diagnostic charge costs nearly as much as the entire device does brand new lol
Long Bone Lupe! Where I used to work the back to school rush was second worse time of the year for people being "I need x and I need it now!" Christmas was the worst! Hope your week goes well and the Gooch dust is minimal.
WAIT, your repair shop is in a subway? Dude, that is, so awesome
I've been around stripped fasteners for quite some time now working on 40+ year old equipment in the military. Another go to solution for slightly stripped fasteners is to use a piece of your glove between the screwdriver and fastener. The correct sized tool and a bit of rubber makes all the difference 😉
Your gags are legendary! Love the content! Keep it coming! To the greatest technician that's ever lived!
When I worked downtown I loved telling tourists that most of the trials actually happened in Danvers and Peabody. The disappointment in their faces made my day.
man the struggle is real..
im dealing with 5 different laptop today..
3 are easy to fix
2 are having motherboard defect..
now i have to wait 14 days of mainboard shipping while my customers are whining.
Sounds about right lol
@@SalemTechsperts I swear the second graders are more responsible with their devices sometimes than the middle schoolers
Because kids are stupid.
Source: was kid, was stupid.
Please make more longer format videos like these, its so much better than shorts

I love how everyone has a macbook, but every repair needs to be as cheap as possible.
Amazing video, thank you for sharing your experience and work with us, I look forward to these videos every week!

I have removed a captive screw on a heat sink for a laptop before. Was a lil key on the bottom... Popped it off, replaced screw, good to go!

That Piastri tshirt is just sublime
It's cool to know you guys have the power to respawn.
Respect. It's one thing to have the patience to tackle computer hardware issues from people who don't know anything about the computers they use daily. It's another thing to have to put up with their bullshit when the problem isn't fixed in a timeframe that seems reasonable only to the uneducated. Keep up the good work!
