How are you, Tony? Saw your honorable mention over at TikTok👍I own two Mk III Supras. I got sick and tired of dealing with the 7MGT, so my main supra has a 1992 Lexus SC 400 1UZ engine that’s absolutely rips and it is getting an HTV 2300 supercharger. I own several 1uz engines and the most expensive one was $450. Side note, I have been told I am the Walmart Tony Angelo 😂 Keep up the awesome work, man.
TA, I just love how you are such a straight shooter, you don't hesitate to tell us your opinion, but you're not too pushy about either... so refreshing. I love G bodies too. They look killer. G bodies are sweet, but it has some suspension geometry issues that need correcting. I have an 83 grand prix, so I'm not hating... but no one needs positive camber under compression.
@@SightsNjunk Ford and Holden Australia had their own chassis and utes from the 1950's through til 2016. In the 80's the Holden would be a WB ute the Ford would be XD, XE or XF model. No need for an El Camino or Ranchero down here mate when we already had better version's..
I worked for a Chevrolet dealership for 30 years and one of the cars I bought used was a 1978 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. It had a 3.8 Buick v6 which I immediately replaced with a big block 454. Still have it. So fun to drive.
nice swap, but that Buick Y6 is the same as the GN block it just needs an oil hole drilled in the front. 600 hp capacity, enough most people can't even put it to the ground. but a 454 will make that power and last longer for less $$ :)
@@ZeGermanHam from what I've seen they typically use the bell housing from a C5 Corvette and bolt that to the front of the torque tube. But the transaxles are expensive to upgrade for big horsepower.
@@benkirkpatrick5278 Yeah, I sold my 944 last year after deciding I wasn't up to swapping it, but the 944 Turbo transaxles are getting pretty thin on the ground and even an original LS1 with only 350 hp will break the stock 944 transaxle without much difficulty.
RX8 basically shares the front suspension/subframe with the NC MX5. If you wanted, you can bolt up the MX-5 subframe and trans, and put in a Ford duratec 2.5L out of a Fusion or Mazda6, turbo, and make 300whp on junkyard parts.
Tony, I just recently picked up a Pontiac Solstice, from 06-10. Saturn Sky is same as well. Minor differences between em, both come with either a 2.4 ecotec NA or 2.0 Turbo motor, auto or manual. For about 5-6k its an easy LS swap and then basically a smaller corvette. Its a parts bin car, so its got a C6 vette steering wheel. One drawback is the wheels, high offset weird bolt pattern, 5x110.
@@StayTunedTA Knowing you, youll find a semi decent one for a good price. I traded a bike I had for the car and had 5500 in the bike. The stuff thats unique to the car, the seals, body and interior is getting hard to find. Beyond that it handles like its on rails, has decent power, front engine RWD. Malibu Cobalt motor, Colorado trans, caddy rear diff. Literally lol. Also if you can find a Z0K(option, check inner side of glovebox lid) solstice, its kinda the "race prepped" one. No AC, manual locks and windows, only in a stick.
Just bought an 06 RX8 for the same reasons you mentioned. The sad part is the rotary engine is actually pretty good in a car this size and mass. I get the want for more horsepower and torque, but I also think I get what Mazda's vision was for this car. So far I really like it as it is. That doesn't mean it won't see pistons and camshafts in its future.
should add the VW 07k engine as a super sleeper engine swap it's a 5 cyl that can handle 400hp without opening it, they've made a swap kit to put one in a porsche 944 and they you get a VW/audi O1E fwd trans to bolt to the back of the torque tube to get a 6 speed that can handle big power.
This channel is about to explode. So underrated. It quickly became my favorite watch. This man is very knowledgeable and a dope dude. Keep up the fast work my guy.
Dang it Tony! Don't take about the RX-8... because I want one. :) I want an '08-09 lapis blue one SO bad. (Like the one you showed.) BTW, if you want a sleeper that's a riot, get a Chevy Astro or GMC Safari minivan. Vortec 5700 drops right in. You just need motor mounts and to add two extra wires for the extra injectors. LS swap is an option but it's alot more work. The Vortec (SBC), all the accessories swap right over from the stock V6. 4L60 can be built up. Throw in an Econoline E-150/250/350 9.75" rear end and you're done. OK, a turbo for 500-600HP and you're done. :D
+1 on the RX-8. Chassis is a bit 'longer wheelbase MX-5'. I recently saw one with a Mustang 3.7 V6 and it was badass. Randy Pobst drove an RX-8, with a Camaro NA V6 (LFX) and LOVED it.
LS engine in a Porsche 944. Not a tough swap, with tons of aftermarket support, and one of the best chassis of the '80's and early'90's. They won practically every 'Best Handling Car' test they ever were considered for. Honda Prelude with a K-motor swap would be sick, too. Not sure if that's been done, or how doable it is. Another brilliant chassis, though.
Also any mini truck, the new gto which came with a 6.0, any cheap Camaro or mustang, the Pontiac solstice/Saturn sky, 3 series bmw, hell even full sized short bed single cabs. There’s a guy in Utah has a awd turbo 4.8 Chevy truck runnin 11s. Tons of cheap options. 👍🏾
Love the #1 pick. I had a chance to get two with blown motors for $1k a few years ago, but had nowhere to put them. Top of my list for cars to pick up and learn skills on without spending a lot or feeling bad about ruining a gem
Barras are our cheap/available alternative to your LS here in NZ. When you busted out the RX8 as the top choice I was like nooo you let the secret out the bag lol. But seriously a great platform for a K Series or Barra Ripper/Drift/Drag/Daily skies the limit. I'm surprised that there hasn't been any popular UA-cam builds using these platform combinations
about 20 years ago, I had am 87 Honda Prelude. it was the 2 door Accord, but it had dual carbs. It was a really fun car when it lasted. I had to replace the alternator 3 times in a month due to a dead short somewhere in the car.
I like this list. At this year’s Power Tour I saw dude with a 2JZ powered ‘68 Dart GT. The car was bare bones but that thing fit in there like a slant six. No butchery involved. I did not realize the SC300 was so Supra-like. Great tip.
Spot on! Reasons why the Oldsmobile Cutlass is on the list include that they were the top selling car several years (some in a row!) in the late 70s and early 80s, which means there are still a lot of them out there, which makes them cheaper, easier to find, and a better selection than the other G bodies. Many came with Buick V6s which also keeps the price down. Happy car hunting!
Good list I bought a sc430 blown up for 400 bucks and a chevy express cargo van with a 6.0...5gs later had one of the coolest most capable slider/weekend cruiser around town.
I think regular cab Colorados are an AWESOME swap candidate. You can even do it with 100% factory stuff if you want to, because they made both two and four wheel drive Colorados with all aluminum 5.3L 4th-gen LS V8s (I have a stock-ish 2012 extended cab Z71 4WD with factory 4.10s and a G80 and a pretty hopped up TR6060-swapped extended cab ZQ8 2WD with 3.73s and a Truetrac), but only in extended and crew cab automatic configurations. I fully intend to put all the goodies from my ZQ8 in a base regular cab truck one day when I have a place to do it. With you on the RX-8, too. I got a chance to ride in and drive one with a bone-stock L33 aluminum 5.3L truck motor in it, and it was an absolute animal and one of the best-handling, easiest-to-drive-fast cars I've ever experienced.
First, this is not my style but I always wondered why the motor and performance didn’t match the styling of the car. I’m speaking of the Chrysler Crossfire, I think you drop an LS or 392 in that car with some suspension and wheels and you have something. I’ve seen them as cheap as 5k but I’m sure less if you find one with a blown motor.
I think your assessment is good. Porsche 944 used to be a good choice but collector fools have driven prices through the roof for even basic ones. I am fond of the Jag XJS as well as any you find usually have dead V12's in them and GM transmissions so easy to swap GM stuff into.
I think this is the 3rd in this " best car to get series ", you seriously have me thinking about those 80s Oldsmobiles. You mentioned them in one of the previous ones. Excellent episode!
Learn something new every day! Never knew RX-8's have 1.5 doors. I saw one mostly stock at work recently and couldn't recall the last time I saw one actually driving on the streets!
I'd like to mention, all Subaru's. I'm currently driving a 09 legacy with a turbo 408 ford Windsor swapped in. Backed by a t5 transmission. It's a monster. Picked up the chassis for $300.
RX8 was my first car back in 2010, your and Derek King's cars were my absolute idols in the US RX8 world back then. I'm 28 now and have owned more cars than I can count, all the way up to R35s, and yet the RX8s ive owned are still genuinely among my favorites. I've been saying for years they are the most slept on car in the drifting and track world. The platform is incredible. Really enjoying the content, thanks man
Yessss the whole time I was literally saying rx8. Those cars handle amazing. I know the rotary is junk but the sound of one with an exhaust sounds amazing.
Yep, helped a friend pull the hamster motor out of the Vega wagon he bought for $200 in the 80’s. Put a 383 Chevy in it and it rocked. The hardest part was actually cutting down a rear end for it.
Love these videos from you Tony. As much as I love the builds and watching you discuss the challenges and issues of upgrading and repairing old cars, I really love these "Fireside chat" type viseos with a little crazy uncle thrown in. Keep it up and congradualtions on 100k subs. You will be to a million soon enough.
If you really want something that fits in everything look at the small Ford Windsors. The 260/289/302 block is tiny and will fit well in just about anything. Even small English roadsters 😁
What about the Miata? I remember they had a 5.0 Ford swap that was popular back in the early 90s. Would make a Sunbeam Tiger like sports car. Unless they are too expensive now. But they've made them for 30 years so there should be plenty of them.
yea but when you put a big ole V8 in it, the handling aspect of it goes away. Plus if it just needs a little more horsepower they have a zillion supercharger and turbo kits for it
I bought myself an SC400 just before Christmas. I love it. Haltech goes into it next month. I'm setting it up for roll and drag racing. Was probably better off going 2JZ but I really wanted a 1UZ coz I missed owning a V8 and they can still make a shitload of power. All about those smiles per hour 😄 Also, recently was talking about 2JZ swapping an 86 with my work mates. Sounds like an awesome idea.
There's two RX8s sitting side by side for sale near my house. I'm buying the cheaper of the two now so I can follow your build and do the same with mine. Let's do this!
Perfect timing for this article! Monza of Street Outlaws just bought and is building a 1985 Pontiac Grand Prix G-body for upcoming episodes of the show in which they are going back to real "street" cars. Heck, his is even going to retain its factory air conditioning and power windows! I'm happy to see the show & racers shift focus from Pro-Mod cars back to Street cars.
I would like to put some honorable mentions .... 90s Ford Thunderbirds/Cougars/Mark VIIIs for a modern-ish muscle car. Heck, someone has even put a 2JZ in one. Teslas - Ok, a lot of work, but once that battery dies you can pick them up cheap.(I think these will be more and more common) Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky - A bit on the pricer side. But there is potential there. And with the most potential on my list .... The Chrysler Crossfire. Great platform, and a fairly easy swap with an AMG 5.5l. Also people swap in the Hemi's as well (which are pretty dirt cheap). If I did not live in California, this would definitely be my next project.
I love the rear wheel drive frs. I sat in it when they first came out and I was in love. I totally want one still in manual. I like the swaps but the part I really like about the frs is it's a quicker car than the carolla with the same fuel economy... It would be swapped after commuter duty.
A good honorable mention should be the Pontiac Fiero. Stock was 135hp for the V6. But a SC3800 is a fairly simple and cheap swap to easily double the power. They've been doing swaps in them since the 90's if not the 80's. Small blocks, big blocks, LS, Cadi Northstar, etc. I've even seen VW diesels and K24 swaps in a Fiero.
I have a buddy that put the Turbo 2.0 ohc from a sunbird in one. I also helped another buddy intercool his turbo Sunbird. He turned up the boost and it would rip the wheel outta your hands in the first three gears. Really bad torque steer but it was kinda fast for very little work
Might I add a z31 Nissan 300zx. That car can be had for relatively cheap. You can beef up the vg30 that's in it but a vg33 is almost a direct swap or use pretty much any swap motor you can think of since the engine bay is both pretty wide and long. It handle great and has a lot of cool gizmos like electronic suspension, fully adjustable seats, pop up headlights, ect. Only real downside is the suspension is similar to the s130 280zx so getting coil overs are either quite expensive or will have to be modified from an s13 kit
So so happy you chose the rx8!! ESP as number 1!! I honestly wondered if it would show up. The dream is LFX rx8 so power and lightness. Do it tony I believe in you. Make rx8’s cool again!!
I agree with all of Tony's picks! My own recommendation for a great swap car would be the Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire. SUPER cheap (like five hundred bucks cheap) easy to find, and a Quad 4 will bolt right in. If that's a bit too mild, a 3.8 Buick V6 will fit in the front easily. I agree that FWD isn't great, but if you're aiming for a dumb fun 300hp car to trash around they're pretty good. Personally, nothing is more fun than a car you don't have to care about.
Just looked and there is a grey 04 RX8 roller for $800 on Marketplace in Auburn, Indiana. I have too many projects that need finished so go pick it up!
For engine swaps, I think there’s also plenty of small block chevys out there for dirt cheap. Might not be as powerful as the LS, but you don’t need all the computer gadgets to get it running. A carb and a few simple wires to run ignition and your off and blazing tires.
You can build a regular small block to 400hp or so for cheap and easy. There’s so many used parts out there because they were the go to for so long. The LS got popular since it was modern and starts off with more power than a stock old small block. And, with the fuel injection the engine ends up shorter than a carb on top of a decent intake. So it fits into stuff easier.
I've got the 6.1 swapped magnum dad-rod, and it's all the power i need. Mabey one day a supercharger or turbo would be cooltoo. Tony if you're ever in Oregon and want to drive it again or work on it just hit me up lol.
The RX-8 is #1 on my list as well. I'd love to build one, but too many projects already. Overlooked? E46 BMW. They're all over the place with cooked motors, and there are kits to LS swap them. How about Miatas? They are great as-is, but a buddy just K24 swapped his track Miata and it's a monster.
I've got a 316i as my DD here in Germany. Every single time I drive it I think how awesome it would be with a mild 4.8/5.3. A solid 300-400hp and a T56 would make for the perfect car. Not to mention it would be rock solid reliable at that power level.
I would not call either miatas or e46's overlooked, they are well known and get a loot of use. We have a grassroots drifting series here with 300tdw 205 tire size rule, and i just call it the e46 cup as 90% are 328's and 330's. They just sold so many of them and they have yet to rust away so they are plentiful, even with how many are being modified.
I just picked up a 90 300 zx for 250 bucks, missing the drivetrain and a 5.3 ls for 1300. I'm a transmission and driveline away from thinking I'm done and being completely wrong.
Along with the SC300, the SC400 has potential. They throw turbos on that engine in Australia in lots of cars. They 4.0 liter V8 in the SC400 is related to the 4.7 liter V8 in your Land Crusier. They are tough and reliable, you can look to the Aussie for all the know how to make those motors scream.
TONY, I don't have anything to add to the conversation, I drive an 81 C3 and always will. I just wanted to make sure the UA-cam algorithm knows that you are cool and deserve great things here.
Hey Tony I'm in the middle of a ls swap in my 59 corvette but before I got that project I was looking to put a Gulf R motor in a 308 Ferrari. I had a 308 a few years ago, great looking car, great handling car but what a dog!!! No power at all. Put 450 horses in a 308 and man what a monster that would be! Not a super cheap project but you would be the king of the street if you could pull that swap off. Am I right?
Another honorable mention is our 2012 Jeep Patriot with a 2.4L 4 cylinder and it's just gutless man, I mean our Patriot (named Pebbles) just look so doggone cute and its all blacked out like a mini Range Rover not to mention practical as well it just needs some horsepower like it definitely needs either a 3.6L Penastar V6 out of a Dodge Grand Caravan or a 3.2L Penastar V6 out of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trail Hawk.
I'm surprised the Chrysler Crossfire was left off the list as well. Some AMG engines are practically drop ins (M-113s), and others are easy swaps (5.5L.) Plus there are a few running Hemis and LSs out there.
I might be biased because I own one buuuuuut....the Pontiac fiero is a great budget project car.you can find a ok condition one for cheap, and you think of a motor and a swap has already been done and some people make swap parts to make it easier. I will likely be k20 swapping mine once I get the funds saved up.
the 7mgte is not a trash engine. mine ran great (after putting a mls head gasket in it). had tons of fun in my '87 turbo supra. it was fully loaded. that said, i did do the 1jzgtte swap.
This a vid I’m gunna save for a future project.. I also think, as part of a list would be a late model Mazda Miata. 400 horsepower 302 and make it look like and handle like a Shelby Cobra. Great info 🍻👍
It's so funny how in the 80's & 90's I didn't think of the G body at all except for the Gran National's because they were so much heavier than many other options but hot rodders will do what they do motor swap and lighten, the G bodies all had certain trims that looked great the Cutlass did look good. I did smoke a 84 Hurst/Olds in the late 80's with my 65 Mustang but my car had more mods better power to weight. I would love to see you do an eng. swap on a RX8.
The hardest part to get around for me is the emissions issue. Where I live in Colorado it needs to be 85 or older to get around that. Plus I have 5 kids. Lol. That's probably why I customize mini bikes instead.
Quite a few options for the RX8, I own 2 of them! One non runner, just trying to decide which engine to swap into it. I'm not a fan of an LS due to the weight throwing off the 50/50 balance. LFX V6 out of a camaro or K series have my vote as of right now. You should definitely get another one as I still believe it is by far the most underrated chassis on the market. Best brakes and handling money can buy! I still run my red one with it's original engine at over 82k miles and it's going strong. Just have to know how to maintain it, keep it lubricated, keep temps down, and beat it like it owes you money!
I agree with you on the SC. They look great and I personally like a car with a longer wheelbase for comfort. They also have after market body kits for them too. 👍
I picked up an RX8 roller in March for $400. Cage builder is LOVING the access the suicide doors give him. It's getting a GM 3.8 V6 for LeMons racing so we're calling it the RXHate
The FC did come turbo charged in this country (Turbo II). I used to autocross an RX8 back in the day. It handled amazing and would kick the shit out of modified vehicles (the one I drove had struts and hoosiers on it). Cheers from West Chester, PA.
Building a 1991 Mercedes 190e with a Japanese dohc 4 power train. Small car, rear wheel drive, high build quality, low weight. Picked mine up rust free for $2,300.00. German/Japanese combo I’m calling “axis of evil” . Will either use the F22c and manual trans out of a Honda S2000 or k24 but I don’t know what rear wheel manual trans to mate to it that’s affordable. Any suggestions on the manual for the K24?
I LOVE the 190E. I always wanted to swap a VQ into one. I had one with a Zender kit in like 2004, it was coool. Such a solid chassis. I was looking at 300E last night, I would love a 500E but prices are nuts, so why not build my own?
The GM G-Body would be my favorite. Like you said the aftermarket support is all over on this. There’s another car I would choose but people will hate me for but for a front engine rear wheel drive platform and can be a sleeper car would be the GM B-Body full size car they weigh in at 3,900 and swap a 1gen sbc ,LS With a overdrive and 4.10 gears ⚙️ you have the all around vehicle street, strip and run 80+ on the interstate and have A/C.
I owned a SC300 and it was such a fun car. The NA 2JZ motor was a pain to work on cause og the intake design. But I thrashed that thing. Ever heard on an Escort EXP? They are pretty rad looking but have a WEAK motor. Swapping onw of those would be awesome and they are cheap cause no one knows about them
My number 1 is still the Pontiac Fiero. Small awesome mid engine RWD 2 seater with a fiberglass body. The notchbacks are '80's AF but the fastbacks still look modern today. Fiberglass panels mean you can mix and match parts on a whim. 3 front bumpers, two rear bumpers notchback fastback solid roof sunroof t-tops whatever you want. The engine choices were a 98hp iron duke or a 140 hp 60 degree v6. bleh. but you can swap in just aboutt anything. the L67 3.8 is the sweet spot for me giving you 240hp/280lbft in stock form in a 2300lb car. Hard to beat. Northstar, ecotec LS you name it someone has swapped it.
I had an 84 Honda Civic 5-speed 2 door hatchback before I really knew how to work on cars. It didn't have any power. But it was fun to drive. And if I would've known what I was doing it could've been a fast fun car to drive
I have the RX7 FC with an LS swap, lots of fun. I've considered the RX8, solid chassis. the differential carrier is the same size! the diffs don't interchange, but the carrier does! the 87-88 Turbo 2 diff is a rebuildable clutch-type limited slip that can be made into a semi-spool. the 89-91 T2 diff is a non-rebuildable viscous LSD. the FD(93-95) carrier is a torsen type but can't handle as much power. still a 8" ring gear that can go as high as ~450 hp... i just looked it up, stock RX8 ratios are 4.44 & 4.77.... so may need a ford 8.8 swap if going V8. might be dead-on for a K20 or 2JZ.
I think a K swapped FRS would be a really fun car Yes on the Olds G body. When I street raced in the early 90s a guy ran one with a 455 and a 4 speed and it was a beast Hmmm you really got me thinking on the RX8, cut up into a back halved drag n drive, no prep , ls turbo or k24 turbo powered , drag radial, street bruiser.
Dude! Look into Volvo 2/7/900. Great car for LS 2J and a k. They have had 4 to 12 cylinders under the hoods. And ya can have 4 doors. Make it a family hot rod.
@@StayTunedTA Ah, that makes sense! I didn’t know you had 5 but thought you’d have seen a ton of them drifting. I’m getting ready to rebuild my T2 this fall, it finally lost compression.
Crazy call on the RX8...... But I like it. Been thinking of a topic like this for a while, like whats the best roller I could get?? Then swap an LS lol. My buddy is super into SCs, thats a great look. my top 3 from hour list are 1. Gbody, 2. SC300. 3. RX8.....Gbody first causes its the easiest to put an LS in.. ALso not seeing an RX8 sikky kit
I'd absolutely love to have a BRZ or FRS. Awesome little cars, they look like incredible fun. I didn't know you could put an LS into it, which would make for an insane ride. Corvette without Corvette money? I also like the GM A and G bodies a lot. RX8 with an LS? Wow, that would be impressive. I remember when they were racing those things on the road courses. It's the only thing I've ever heard that was louder and more obnoxious-sounding than the jet drier.
just seen yesterday in a FB group of a turbo K-series swapped G-body. lol. but, i was thinking about it. stock 305-307 in one of those turds (i have a regal) makes like 130-160hp... a K24A makes 200hp stock. 400-450 wheel turbo no problem on stock engine... sure a mild 6.0-6.2 will make that too. but stock 80s lump wont.
Dude! I’ve got a vid idea for ya! So you know how drag cars have the narrow tires up front? So what if you upgrade/install a drift style front end where the contact is the same as the drag car but you can use it both ways? Is the weight too detrimental? Or is it the drag from surface contact? Can you make a drift car a badass dragster due to front tire contact? Additional is it the contact of the front tire or the weight of that assembly?
EF Civic is the last good looking one. Got a 90 EF hatch with a period correct SI engine and trans at home. Also got a 90 silverado 4x4 with a 5.3 sitting next to it. Did them both myself wires and all.
It's a shame we don't have them here in Aus but we do have lots of other cool options. Keep up the good content!!

G bodies are sweet, but it has some suspension geometry issues that need correcting. I have an 83 grand prix, so I'm not hating... but no one needs positive camber under compression.

I think a Porsche 944 could be a good contender. They are still dirt cheap and a few companies make decent LS swap kits.
Doesn't the fact that they use a transaxle rather than a standard transmission make swapping them more difficult, though?
@@ZeGermanHam There's kits for it, but it's not exactly a cheap swap with all the gear needed. Still an awesome car, and they are good value.
Why not a t5 and narrowed 9 inch swap wit the v8
RX8 basically shares the front suspension/subframe with the NC MX5. If you wanted, you can bolt up the MX-5 subframe and trans, and put in a Ford duratec 2.5L out of a Fusion or Mazda6, turbo, and make 300whp on junkyard parts.
A buddy of mine built an 84 cutlass with a 1970 455. That car was the ultimate sleeper!
I can't believe how many people are saying solstice! That's a great car for sure. I don't think I realized they are so cheap.
Thanks man! We are having fun getting rolling!
Dang it Tony! Don't take about the RX-8... because I want one. :) I want an '08-09 lapis blue one SO bad. (Like the one you showed.)
BTW, if you want a sleeper that's a riot, get a Chevy Astro or GMC Safari minivan. :D
I love the Astro vans! They are super cool. Been thinking about building one for a long while.
Kyle from Boosted Bois put a k24 in the BRZ, made it look strait up plug and play, even kept the A/C.
+1 on the RX-8. Chassis is a bit 'longer wheelbase MX-5'. I recently saw one with a Mustang 3.7 V6 and it was badass. Randy Pobst drove an RX-8, with a Camaro NA V6 (LFX) and LOVED it.
Stock gears(4.44 or 4.77) in the RX-8 would make that fun. Add some mild boost or giggle gas for a real kick.
1st gen Dodge Dakota
Hahaha, that 70s Price Is Right/Archer sad trombone noise. Been using that for my notification sound on my phone for a while. Love it 🤣
I keep bugging my son to do the SC400 with a 1UZ or a RX8 with an L33 aluminum 5.3 with CD099
Put a 2JZ TURBO in it, and it will rip the pavement up.
about 20 years ago, I had am 87 Honda Prelude. it was the 2 door Accord, but it had dual carbs.
Great tip.
The 1978-1979 and 81 up cutlass is the main for everyone I love the 80. Such a sleeper looking old man car
I have a 79 Salon coupe w/5000 miles.
I got 2 1987 monte carlo luxury sports.
Good list I bought a sc430 blown up for 400 bucks and a chevy express cargo van with a 6.0...5gs later had one of the coolest most capable slider/weekend cruiser around town.
That rules! I love the SC, esp after Daigo had his at FD.
Another great episode Tony !!!
Thanks bud! You gonna build a drag Rx-8 or what?!
I'm sure that would be a decent car, I think it's mostly Mercedes/Daimler underneath, no?
They’re hard to find, but they made an SRT-6 Crossfire. Had a supercharger and made a little over 300hp. That one had the performance it needed.
@@StayTunedTA that’s a valid point, I think your right.
@@NBSV1 I saw what I thought was a custom Crossfire with SRT badging as I didn’t realize they actually made one.
Thanks! Yeah, they are awesome, getting scooped up but you can still find em.
91-96 Chevy caprice or impala ss with ls or stock lt1 definitely a sweet car
RX8 was my first car back in 2010, your and Derek King's cars were my absolute idols in the US RX8 world back then. I'm 28 now and have owned more cars than I can count, all the way up to R35s, and yet the RX8s ive owned are still genuinely among my favorites. I've been saying for years they are the most slept on car in the drifting and track world. The platform is incredible. Really enjoying the content, thanks man
Very cool man! Derek has a ton of great stuff, and seems to get more every week.
Yessss the whole time I was literally saying rx8. Those cars handle amazing. I know the rotary is junk but the sound of one with an exhaust sounds amazing.
My brother had an SC400 when we were kids and that thing was fucking wicked! The 1UZ quickly became one of my favorite engines.
I come from a time when V8 Vegas were cool. I think your #1 pick is dead on, with an LS of course.
Yeah, that is the way I would go too. I am thinking about it right now. They are just too good and too cheap.
Awesome those g bodies were awesome. Had 86 regal with 307 in 86 in high school.
All about those smiles per hour 😄
Also, recently was talking about 2JZ swapping an 86 with my work mates. Sounds like an awesome idea.
Nice! Solid points on number 1 pick. I wouldn’t have gone there, but now you have me thinking…
There's two RX8s sitting side by side for sale near my house. I'm buying the cheaper of the two now so I can follow your build and do the same with mine. Let's do this!
Let's GO!!!! Ok ok, I'm gonna grab one!
Teslas - Ok, a lot of work, but once that battery dies you can pick them up cheap.(I think these will be more and more common)
Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky - A bit on the pricer side.
800 bucks! That is what i'm talking about! I actually still have a bunch of suspension parts laying around from when I used to race an Rx8.
YES, Tony acknowledged the Honda K24!!! 🏁
I have a C10 with the og small block and these things like to leak so easy. I've considered swapping in an LS just to keep oil spots off the driveway!
I've got the 6.1 swapped magnum dad-rod, and it's all the power i need. Mabey one day a supercharger or turbo would be cooltoo. Tony if you're ever in Oregon and want to drive it again or work on it just hit me up lol.
I watch that episode regularly. Love that magnum...nice buy brother
I bought my E46 with the intention of swapping in a GM engine. IMO combining Detroit iron with European handling would be awesome.
E46 had rear subframe issues
My buddy bought an rx8 with the plans of a k swap recently. Definitely a good pick
#1 of my list ford maverick
Done a 81 buick regal with blown v6 and swapped a LS1 drivetrain out of wrecked firebird. had 2k in it running
I agree with you about the Mazda RX-8. People don't realize that underneath that body is a lot of the Miata suspension in handling
MX5 fan boys don't realise the RX was around alot longer so it's the MX5 that borrows RX dna😉
I just picked up a 90 300 zx for 250 bucks, missing the drivetrain and a 5.3 ls for 1300. I'm a transmission and driveline away from thinking I'm done and being completely wrong.
Hell yeah! Nice scoop.
@@StayTunedTA what's a good cheap transmission? 500 hp is my goal.
I love the turbo LS Volvo wagons. It’s even possible to LS swap and make a RWD Subaru wagon.
Right on! Thanks dude.
@@christianjadot4459 Right
I might be biased because I own one buuuuuut....the Pontiac fiero is a great budget project car.you can find a ok condition one for cheap, and you think of a motor and a swap has already been done and some people make swap parts to make it easier.
Ok, glad I came back and kept watching! Cutlass big block idea I can get behind!
Bro your editing if F-ing hilarious. This channel is gonna go far, keep pushing man!
Thanks dude! We are having fun with it!
The hardest part to get around for me is the emissions issue. Where I live in Colorado it needs to be 85 or older to get around that. Plus I have 5 kids. Lol. That's probably why I customize mini bikes instead.
The 3.6 camaro motor is a popular rx8 swap coming on now. It's a 3rd gen Miata underneath from what I understand.
Love this idea. Sounds awesome.
Awesome picks. I just saw a Ford Fairmont (that you didn't mention) for $800. LS swap that ish!!!! Awesome looking 😴.
The FC did come turbo charged in this country (Turbo II). I used to autocross an RX8 back in the day. It handled amazing and would kick the shit out of modified vehicles (the one I drove had struts and hoosiers on it). Cheers from West Chester, PA.
I’m well aware, I have had 5 FCs! Just in Japan they ONLY came turbo, is what I was saying.
Love the name! 🤣 axis of evil, brilliant!
I LOVE the 190E. I always wanted to swap a VQ into one. I had one with a Zender kit in like 2004, it was coool. Such a solid chassis. I was looking at 300E last night, I would love a 500E but prices are nuts, so why not build my own?
Just wanna point out the sc300 has a non vvti 2j which holds pretty good power
Love your shows !!! Your enthusiasm and knowledge are amazing! Glad you’re back in PA with the fam! Leaving now and checking out your merch. Thanks
Sc300 and even the Sc400 are awesome cars would love to have one, BUT it’s hard to find one that isn’t beat for a good price.
I'm just here for the sarcasm, dry humor and quick wit... mostly.
I think a K swapped FRS would be a really fun car
Yes on the Olds G body. When I street raced in the early 90s a guy ran one with a 455 and a 4 speed and it was a beast
Hmmm you really got me thinking on the RX8, cut up into a back halved drag n drive, no prep , ls turbo or k24 turbo powered , drag radial, street bruiser.
Dude! Look into Volvo 2/7/900. Great car for LS 2J and a k. They have had 4 to 12 cylinders under the hoods. And ya can have 4 doors. Make it a family hot rod.
Great list overall, but we did get turbo FCs in the States. Turbo 1st gens were only in Japan.
Yeah, I was saying Japan ONLY sold turbo FCs, they didn't have NA cars like we did. I have owned 5 turbo FC's btw!
Yeah, I think sikky used to make it, but there are others out there!
@@StayTunedTA ps thanks for the content!!!!
I'd put a turbo K in it, it's lighter :)
3.gen Celica GTS is a pretty much AE86 but with IRS. 2-5k for ok ones, 10k for really good ones
just seen yesterday in a FB group of a turbo K-series swapped G-body. lol. but, i was thinking about it. stock 305-307 in one of those turds (i have a regal) makes like 130-160hp... a K24A makes 200hp stock.
Really? I always liked the EG, and there's so many parts for the later cars.
I do really think the EF is cool and the CRX is awesome.
😂😂😂 five foot eight and a quarter with asthma! Gold!
Dammit, I miss HRG so much I'm watching Stay Tuned and Lucky's Garage back to back like it's HRG in Philly and LA, like with the Bonemaro rebuild.
Had a 87 regal with the 307. Pretty sure your 180 hp estimate is pretty sporty these days…
It was badass looking though.
