- There recipe is: take one small, lightweight, RWD car and cram it full of V8 horsepower and beef up the drivetrain to match, bake (tires) for 30 seconds, and you get one sweet little drag car! 1986-1992 Rx7's are plentiful, affordable and usually don't run, so they make the perfect candidate for a fun, basic drag strip machine!

So glad you guys are back to this channel. It's like watching unscripted Hot Rod Garage with Tony and the boys. Best show ever
Thanks man, that really means a lot!
I agree, fun channel here!
I feel like Tony should have been holding a flashlight while Dad was rebuilding the transmission...
Oh I’m sure he was the oh fudge kids from Christmas Story
Yeah tony learned a thing or two lol
We’ve all been there 😂
Almost 40 years rebuilding transmissions and my man still reads the directions. That's how you know that one is going back together correctly. That's the difference between knowledge and wisdom.
"if i had a gun to my head that's not where I'd put them"
"Labyrinth, I had that game"
😂
The speed and confidence with which Ben tore into that transmission was inspiring. I would have been taking pics of everything and carefully laying the parts in order.
Yeah, I get the feeling he's been in there a time or two.
Right, but then again hes been doing that for the entire time I've been alive lol. I was born in 1983 and he said he started doing those in '84.. I bet he can do them blindfolded
We didn’t get to see the pizza during the transmission build. I’m triggered.
Once I started watching, I couldnt stop... His knowledge of transmissions are awe inspiring. I don't know if ill be able to sleep tonight after watching this....
We could all use a Ben in the shop!
I’d love to see more of this kind of work on the trans. Cool to se wit unedited and just right through.
Watching a trans rebuild is certainly a nice change of pace. Ready to see a pass!
Really? I wasn't sure if it would fly here.
@@StayTunedTA You do you T.
@@StayTunedTA Man Tony, don't underestimate how good you are at explaining tech in a very entertaining way. A lot of us first became fans in your early HRG days.
@@StayTunedTA it's like I'm watching myself in a room with Ben. I have no idea what Pagan deity he sacrificed a goat to, but he can make any transmission work by whispering to it. I'd have missed Power Tour 2019 without him!!
Ben is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to transmission rebuilds! Helped me out a bunch on my 4L60e rebuild for my Trans Am.
I feel like everyone needs to know a Ben who can help them with stuff like this. Just confidently going about his business, knowing exactly what to do.
I wish everybody felt that way about this Ben!
That guy is Lucky Costa
Man, your channel is by far my favorite on UA-cam so far tony.. you do builds the regular guy can pull off.. appreciate what you're doing.!!
Thanks for watching, we appreciate it!
I been a fan of Tony since hot rod gerage. Seems like the kind of dude the world needs more of.
When you break one of the outer cv joints you can upgrade to beefier FD outer cv joints and hubs using a Timken 510051 or equivalent wheel bearing. The hub pilot is larger on the fd hub so you’ll need to either machine the hub to 66mm or open up the fc brake rotor to fit. Another option is Ronin Speedworks’ 8.8 with their Grande axle kit.
Also, on stock suspension you’ll have better luck preloading the rear by stalling the converter on the line. Basically you want to leave with the suspension already bottomed out. If you let it drop the rear on the hit and bounce you’ll just spin, wheel hop and break stuff. I’ve raced my swapped fc for almost 15 years and when it was 100% stock suspension I was cutting low 1.40 60’ times consistently. The stock suspension works well for drag racing.
Lastly, do what you can to keep the front diff mount from slipping out from the studs. Give it a tack weld if you need to. With those solid diff mounts you run a serious risk of breaking the body studs that the diff mount to if the front of the diff lifts up.
Its a good thing you spent the time putting in the turbo II rear end. Now tony will make five passes instead of three passes before it breaks.
I feel good about this one lasting for a good while, we've been abusing it pretty seriously since we put it together!
bahhhah 😂
My NA rear lasted 6 years with a 383sbc and 200r4 transmission, with a few dozen track launches.
My secret: stock 185 tires in the back, lol. I don't know if I ever had a sub 2.0 60tf time.
Another banger of an episode. Even better than Hot Rod Garage if you ask me. Happy you got everyone mic'd up now.
Fantastic Sling Blade reference 4:44
Got my Street Freak T and stickers. Gonna party like it’s 1982. HellYeah everyone. Thank you
Awesome! Thanks so much for the support!
Classic on Cinco de Mayo. Got my margarita and a slice. Ready to Stay Tuned
Nice! Salud!
Watching a pro do their thing is always an amazing experience.
Light with big power is a good recipe for a drag car. Nicely done!
Thanks! It's SO much fun for being so basic.
Love these posts coming so soon. My favorite channel right now.
Thanks! We are hustling to get out at least one a week! A couple extras coming up soon too!
You know an old school builder when he's working with a speed handle.
Dalton...I gotta say I respect your commitment to the quest of will it run and make it home? You really throw caution to the wind and just send it ...and overcome whatever problem arises...BTW your land yacht collection is getting to be spectacular!! Keep it up man...I look forward to this every week!!
Thanks man, I appreciate it! Just having fun out here!
@Stay Tuned holy crap how unbelievably embarrassing ..Tony man ..I had your new video saved in a Playlist and somehow the comment for your video ended up on Daltons channel and Dalton on yours..that's what happens when you watch UA-cam on a TV and comment with a phone
@@jpagrelius I knew exactly what video you were trying to comment on before I even clicked on it
@J Lo ha..yeah I was watching Stay tuned on my TV and trying to comment on the pole barn episode with my phone I had watched on my TV just before..so as soon as it switched over my comment went to the wrong channel..lol
Glad someone understood..
A Turbo350 for a six cylinder...Learn something new every day.
That bit of info is priceless for a person whom would be looking for one used or rebuilt. Or just junk yard hunting!
I never knew there was a difference.
Thumbs up for that piece of knowledge alone!!
This has become one of my absolute favorite channels. Thank y’all for the great content and hard work.
Let's go!!!!!!
Let's GO!
Wow. My very first car was a 2nd gen RX-7. There's a good story behind how I got it. But when I did it had a completely seized engine and a blown up transmission. The interior was completely rotted out, the paint was destroyed etc. But it was solid underneath. The body was straight enough just a few little dings. It took me and my dad forever to get the car done but we stuffed a small block Chevy and a turbo 350 in it. Shift kit with a 3300 stall converter. We (it was always our car even though it was "mine") ended up selling it to fund shop upgrades and our race car. Now I realize I want it back. Except maybe with a big block... Thanks Tony 👍
LET'S GO!!!!! BEST UA-cam CHANNEL OUT HERE!!!!!!!!!
Hey, thanks so much! Really appreciate it!
I've been bracket racing my LS-FC for 12 years and was at HR drag weekend in 2016 with it. the T2 diff setup is good but has limits. my next step is shimming mine. i'd also suggest a pinion snubber.
look up the old norotors forum for tons of great info, a lot less BS than some forums.
a couple things that might help if you stay with the independent rear suspension- camber links from Ronin Speedworks to get a better contact patch, and if you go much over 450 rwhp you'll need their ford 8.8 diff kit. also rear springs, change them to some standard 2.5" 150#/in coilover springs with threaded coilover adjusters. if you bounce off the bumpstops on launch, the car will spin every time. you just need enough spring to prevent the bounce.
dude, you are knocking them out. love it as already said
“Voodoo box.” I felt that Tony. 😁
so glad you went back to solo, get to see your builds more offen.
We are having a blast out here, and this pace is wild but it's gotta us in the shop having fun all the time!
I LOL when Ben said hes been taking them apart since 1984!
Ive been taking them apart since before then, difference is, Ive never sucessfully put one back together!
Great content with Ben!
He REALLY knows his stuff, definitely blew me away!
Sweet! My first motor swap was a 383 in an 86 FC. I used a 200r4 transmission from a Buick GN. I drove it through college, it trapped 91 in the 8th, was a super fun car.
i just love watching mates in a shed cranking on cars! its such a change from the commercial sides of everything, also its amazing watching the guy service the trans talk about doing it a few times Jesus.....
Hell yeah!!! Such a sweet ride!
Thanks! It's a fun and rough around the edges, like all my favorite things.
@@StayTunedTA hahaha yes sir! Keep up the good work!!!
Absolutely love fc rx7s no matter what drive line it has unfortunately v8s are hard to come by in Northern Ireland
It’s like watching Bernini work. Damn Tony. Talk about a reference there. +10 for being a cultured gentleman with one oxblood boot.
Content is great lately! Keep em coming guys! Thanks
Thanks! appreciate the support!
i love how you found the guy with the expertise.
that guy needs a love hug
Tony is singlehandedly bringing back overalls as a cool fashion to the point that Super Mario is wicked jealous.
They are beyond comfortable!
Fun show. I hope your done changing platforms every month. I'd love to see you grow an audience to make it profitable for you!
You and me both, thanks for watching!
Killer car T/A badass ! That's a good move with RX7 , great video dudes!
I'm glad your releasing more content on your own channel. You and your crew are cool, I'd love to hang out with you guys some time.
This channel has one awesome project after the next. Keep the boost coming.
Mad props to you and the crew, Killin it yet again! BadA$$!!
Love what you’re doing. Been following you around for years.
I’m totally rolling on the floor laughing I built a really nice TH350 transmission in 1981 and put in that same shift kit I also left out TWO of the cushions clutches on second gear and every time it shifted it chirped the tires even at zero throttle.
Idling around town at 20 miles an hour chirping the tires is a heavenly thing everyone should do it.
I had nothing special in my car motor wise it was a 66 chevelle three 327 and hump heads and 268 H grind comp cam. 355hp.
Being from the Midwest I was always die hard american car fan. Now that im on the west coast I can see the value of dropping an American heartbeat in an import shell. I had an AE86 that I really wanted to do that with.
This build brings back memories of my car club nights here in NC. My buddy in the club built a red rx7 with a 350 small block. Was a blast!! I had an 02 SS Camaro then. He couldn't exactly keep up but it was so much fun.
Awesome as usual Tony and Crew !
you guys hands down have some of he best mix of builds and cars on the channel! every episode I've watched is a BANGER!
Thanks so much! This crew is awesome, and we have a blast working on everything.
You say you wanted it to be a turbo rx7?
It still can be!
Don't threaten me with a good time! We already talked about it lol.
Tony definitely has a lot of patience with those young guys
whenever i see someone bust out an old spin socket, i immediately trust them with my parts.
Absolutely.
I really like your videos and is one of the highlights of my night. Thank you.
really good insight into auto transmissions ive struggled to understand them for years but this makes it a bit more clear. mad love to you boys, been following stay tuned for a few years now, love the videos. inspires me to build some big power V8s
and i'm a 1jz and 2jz guy
The authenticity and gritty feel of ST is so refreshing. Keep up the great work
Thanks! Just having fun over here!

Super cool guest spot on this video.
Would be sweet to see guests in the future for projects. It’s cool to see how this stuff works.
Heck ya man 🤘🤘🤘🤘 the moment we’ve all been waiting for
ay we out here, the early birds.
Appreciate ya!
Fun video! Thanks guys
I'm with you, I never did more than shift kit to trans, and change transmissions. That man is a godsend for the knowledge and experience in automatics.
I had a 68 satellite With a 440 and a Torqueflite.
I did the reverse manual valve body modification to it, best thing I ever did it was so fun to drive that way.
Truly back to ur roots in the fc
Well, with the small block, not exactly my roots but it does feel really familiar. I think the other ST dudes are falling in love with this little car.
I hope to see a rotary build on the channel someday
Man shout out to the editors of donut doing absolutely amazing
Love all the builds and oddity's good shit for sure!
Tony I'm glad you came into my life with Hot Rod Garage, and I was disappointed when you left although I understood why. Now you have this channel and you look like you're truly having fun. Keep up the great content!
Pro tip. Put a big punch strait up in the vice, hang the trans by one of the bell housing bolt holes.
Yes! So awesome!
Love you're back on your channel!
Dope Channel!!! Love what you Guys are doing!
Really awesome... can't wait to see this one rip!
The dark arts!
Great great session!
Ben you rule!
Loving this content! Keep up the amazing work!
Thanks! We are doing it as hard as we can! Lincoln Dyno video Friday. Some real ups and downs on that one.
Love the build brother.
You guys are the shit. The transmission OG is a good guy to know!
Love the content guys. Thank you.
I love how Tony has embraced the roll of grumpy old man LOL
Great episode guys! I'd love to see a follow up episode sometime that outlines tools/gear in like maybe 5 stages. 1st get these things, and this is what it'll allow you to do, 2nd etc. I really want to dive in to a project with my son, but can't afford to go over my head.
Awesome video, watching that guy just tear into the trans made my palms sweaty 🤣🤣. Hope we see this thing back and on the track
I watched you on hotrod garage and that was cool but i think this channel is even better. Like that you are doing more dragracing. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks! Appreciate it!
Awesome Tony. Reminds when I was growing there was a drag racer who had an Opel Manta with I believe a small block “oly the Opel.
Awesome build Tony
I really dig the transmission dude, hopefully he can show up more. funny episode
The old saying. Action speaks louder than words! You love the thrill of drag racing shows with the adrenaline. Just get it sit down shut up and hang on hehe
Give it shit this season reaper 👌
It's way more fun to put one of these TransGo kits in while laying on your back in the driveway while getting bit by Florida Fire Ants, TRUST ME.
HAHAh, I will take your word for that.
Tony, Thanks for another great video!
Thanks for watching! Built motor Turbo Lincoln is up next!
Great episode, more tech than some of the episodes lately.
@23:44 I laughed way too hard at "Ello Govnah" 🤣🤣
Having a lift makes that job look sooo much easier than it was for me doing it - alone, on Jack stands with two jacks, and a chilton manual - smh, omg : glad to see another build tho, can’t wait to see what time you pull. I got a video of mine uploaded from track day- 12.3 fastest et, all motor, full set of street tires, pump gas… get some
You have an FC with a small block in it? Yeah, this lift is the best money I've ever spent.
39 years of transmission building experience. Very cool
Yo Tony- one of the pop-up adds for me was a pizza commercial. Way to keep everything on brand.
Love it,great video ❤
Nice video clip from the Shelsley Walsh hill climb in the UK!
Agreed plus fc rx7 can double as both drift and drag
When you overpower the rx7 rear, Ronin Speed Works makes a mount and axle kit to install the independent rear 8.8 ford into the rx7 chassis. Need the rear diff and axles from a 2003-2010 Ford Explorer. That will handle much more power and give you the ability to change ratios while keeping the rx7 hubs and suspension.
Common on an E60 and also normally fills the boot control units with water too. If you check the end of the drains the star shaped ends fuse together with even a small amount of debris.
Using a pair of scissors you can cut these only slightly and will never have the problem again after clearing the drains.
Ben is like a fricken wizard
