Thank you for this. Man, I remember teenager me stealing an egg and then realizing you could hatch it. That really excited me and I loved my birdie. I was in so much pain when it suddenly attacked me 🥲
Tallbirds are like a card game archetype that the devs forgot about. Just like those unloved archetypes, tallbirds deserve some love. Maybe create a coop system? Or maybe buildings to make this strategy viable? Or maybe a buildable that can cover an empty nest which pacifies the birds and allows them to be recruited? I think the community would react positively to any form of tallbird support.
Tallbirds are a remnant of the nihilistic undercurrents that pervaded early Don't Starve. You risk your life to get this egg, you put your heart and soul into incubating and nurturing this little creature, and what happens? How are you rewarded for this one time you made an effort to protect life, instead of destroying it? This creature you brought into being turns on you the first chance it gets, the moment it wants for independence. It was just depending on you for survival, and you projected your human thoughts and fears onto it because it was cute, but it never loved you back; because ultimately, it's just another vicious wild beast in this hell we call home. What's the point in ever being more than that?
Permanent Tallbird followers (without glitching the game, and with regular Tallbird stats) would be so cool. I feel like the only way it could be implemented without breaking the game would be to make the way of doing so be quite difficult. Like maybe you have to provide it with affection, like beefalo, but not as complicated, and once it becomes fully grown, it won’t turn on you.
FINALLY! I'm so glad someone found a way to keep these guys. Honestly, I think it's really messed up and not very fun to have them turn on you after all the work you put into raising them. I understand that it (sort of) works in terms of story, but the gameplay suffers deeply for it. Thanks for this!
@@BriarPatchNyra This may not be the answer but wild birds that mature are their own independent adults and I'm guessing they turn to instinct, and in this game I think it may be just to attack the player and reproduce

The development of the Tallbird really feels like a horror story to me. First it's an egg that you diligently, raise, then a cute little chick, and then it's legs grow in in that unsettling animation, the sign that your child is becoming slowly a monster. And then, it does. It literally sees red and attacks it's former caretaker in a shocking betrayal. Maybe that's just me, though.
