      @@gerrymcveigh I was able to trace some of my ancestry to Donegal, or that area. I see pictures of the area and your videos and think how sad it must have felt to leave it.

      It must have been. I think there is still quite a drain of young people from parts of the west of Ireland as they go to university or looking for work and don't come back.

    Wonderful spot, hidden world, Gerry. We have driven to the park and dandered round for an afternoon but that was it. One of the guys put on a bird of prey exhibition with a golden eagle present. This was great. The midgies were shocking though in the parkland! Aaaaah! I was badly bitten.
    That was amazing to get so close to that deer! I was very surprised! Boy you know your way about!
    You opened a gate through a high fence at 17 49 why was the gate/fence so high? -Something to do with the deer maybe? I was surprised to hear the cuckooso high up! Wow!

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  3 роки тому

      Tom, it is a great spot, walking on past the castle along the length of the lough is beautiful if you ever get the chance to return. I had the breeze which kept the midges down - totally agree that they can be shocking. The wind was blowing the right way and I got quite close to the deer, usually they are well gone before even see them. The fence is a deer fence, there is a fair bit of forest growing and regeneration down along the lough and they would wreck havoc if they got in. Always cool to hear the cuckoo 😊

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  3 роки тому

      Cheers Richard, not much litter in these hills unsurprisingly due to the fairly low numbers of walkers, though was quite a bit on the road at the back of Glenveagh - could have lifted a bag full of stuff thrown from passing cars! It is a great initiative and should make a difference if everyone did their bit👍

    Glad I got the pleasure of you delivering that unfinished business that needed tending to! I recently watched your last trip to Glenveagh so I remember your camera lost and found story. Fab shots of the mountain range and your descent along the valley trail. It looked a cold night for the bivy but no complaints from you so you were obviously snug! Definitely a spot you’ve inspired me to visit in 2021! 👍 you

      Miriam, it was an itch that needed sorted! It was pretty cool with that northerly breeze though nowhere near freezing and was pretty snug in the bivy. There is some beautiful walking all around Glenveagh and the Poisoned Glen so well worth a visit👍

    I did Poison Glen in August in mad heat after weeks of rain. It was brutal - heavy and overgrown underfoot and I couldn't find the route up to the top so had to camp down with the midges. I'll tame it next time!

I gotta say I enjoy the sound and the idea of them underground streams. Watch your ankle though eh? Ha, not sure if there are any midges in the Caribbean. That was an enchanting beach and area. • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      Cheers Shane, I use an Alpkit Hunka bivy (a Hunka XL will allow you to put the sleeping mat inside) which was a great upgrade from an old army surplus bivy I have had for years. The sleeping mat is an Exped Synmat 7 which has a good rating for temperature and giving insulation on cooler nights. Hope this is useful👍

    Great Videos Gerry, how do you work out your routes Gerry?

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  3 роки тому +1

      Cheers, I pretty much look at the map (Viewranger is good as you can plot a route and save it and it gives you the distance and ascent) and mark it out. Mountainviews.ie is a great reference for information on specific hills, routes and starting points in out of the way places that I have never been Ito before. It is always good to add something different to a rout done before - this one was slightly different from my visit in 2019 was was the camp spot😊

      There is a very large carpark at Glenveagh Visitor Centre and I have also parked at the old church in Dunlewey which has room for a couple of cars if going up the Poison Glen.👍
