What a beautiful mountain. What you described is almost what I feel sometimes. I love planning walks and I really look forward to them but when the day comes I often just don't feel like going and I'll make excuses as to why I'm not going. I really have to push myself. Its daft as I know as soon as I'm walking I feel great.

    • @StephenJReid

I've found making videos has helped to force me out. I treat it like it's a job and that helps with the inertia. But I have bailed on both hikes and videos a few times.

    • @WoodsideWalker

@StephenJReid I recognised straight away what you were describing. For me it doesn't make sense how I feel because I know getting out walking makes me happy.

@@StephenJReid One of the best pieces of running advice I've heard is that it's not motivation that you need, it's discipline. You have to tell yourself that it doesn't matter whether you want to do it or not, you have to do it. I've had dozens of runs that I didn't want to do, but I never regretted a single one of them. I came back feeling like I'd battled with my will and won. The whole exercise would almost seem masochistic were it not for the fact that you know that at the end of it all you'll be glad you did it.
I know what you're discussing isn't running Stephen, and I'm probably trivialising hugely, but I wonder if there's something similar at work here.

    • @StephenJReid

@dallan7740 what keeps me going is that I treat it like a job when I’m making a video. I’m here to do the job, I just have to do it even if I don’t feel like it, because it’s my job.
With running I used to have a lot more discipline, trained for hours on the road, hurting the entire time. Because I was motivated to get a new PB. I’ve totally lost that discipline on the roads, I don’t care now, PBs are meaningless really. So I need different goals now.

    • @romanutd

@dallan7740 Great advice, I love running but often have to boot myself out the door (it's the hardest part), once you do it, you never regret it.

Great video Stephen. You take me places I have been, places I am even familiar with, and you make me want to go back and next time see for myself some of what you capture for the screen. With Errigal I think it’s the loneliness and the silence. I feel I was with you, even to the extent I got the feeling it was me getting back to the cosy van as the light faded. Looking forward to part two.

Lovely video, the sunset shots was nothing short of mastery.
Thanks for your candor. I recognize the sense of stagefright all to well. I almost quit making videos because of the same feeling since it only got worse when I started editing. Today I'm thankful that I pushed through that sense of discomfort.
I don't know if you alreday got the answer to why the wind dies down at sunset... but it's because the temperature difference between land and a large body of water. In daytime the sun warms land faster than water and you get a seabreeze, around sunset land and water have the same temperature since land cools of much faster and the breeze dies down at the equlibrium. During the night when land drops even further in temperature you get a landbreeze in the other direction. Rinse and repeat. Cheers!

Great video as always. What you're describing is anxiety. I have it pretty severely. Sometimes to the point of panic attacks. Glad you're able to work through it. It has, in the past, caused me to give up some client work. It's not fun.

    • @StephenJReid
      @StephenJReid  Рік тому +1

Yeah I think so, I started feeling like that on some jobs about 5years ago. And yeah once on a big project I think I was borderline panic attack. I like to tell myself it's a good thing, because it means I care about the work. Which is kinda true because I never feel like that on jobs I'm not interested in.
But also like you, I do now avoid certain kinds of project for that reason.
Hope you find a way through it! Dunno if this will help you but on client jobs I remind myself that what I'm doing doesn't really matter in a broad sense. I'm just helping a business sell something, I'm not doing surgery or saving lives.
Doesn't mean I don't take the work seriously, but I need to realise it's not serious work.

To be clear: I was referring to the summit view and not the view of the hole in your shorts.
Stephen, the most important comment you made in the video was “it was worth it.” When I have the depressive inertia (great phrase, btw), that’s when I focus on the process and not the result. The tough part is trusting myself enough to accept that the process will get the result. The fact that you didn’t return to the van, the strength it took to overcome that moment allowed you (and us, thank you) to see that glorious sunset.
Much appreciated, friend. Always much appreciated.

Thanks Chad, glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 Trust the process 100%!
So I do have Super thanks enabled on the channel and it's on other videos. But I can't monetise this video thanks to using 4secs of Willie Nelsons "on the road again". I could mute it, but I'm leaving it in for now as it fits the flow of the video, but I means I'll make $0 in ad revenue from this one.
I might mute or trim it out later but don't want to compromise the viewing experience of regular viewers.

Great video, as always, Stephen. I think most of us feel overwhelmed when we start projects. I've been doing my podcast over 4.5 years and I still feel like I sometimes don't want to start doing research for an episode. I sometimes feel stressed over it too. But I always talk myself into and it turns out ok. I believe it's part of the human condition. Things that really matter to us cause us the most stress. If they didn't matter to us, they wouldn't be such a big deal.
