    You could take so many screenshots from any of your videos and get some great prints. Another class hike, the laughs were stunning. I think the second one was my favourite, lough keel I think it was. Fair play for taking the crisp packet away. Brilliant as always Gerry 👍

      Martin, I am surprised someone hasn't made a go at fixing it up as some sort of holiday retreat, though perhaps best that it is derelict and no one lives in such a beautiful place. Camping at the lough is way cool and you have that river there too👍

    A stunning video Gerry beautifully made . I had to pause the video a couple of times to really appreciate the images you captured. The best was definitely the silhouette shot of you on the summit of Aghla Beg with the distant glow on the horizon . Brilliant hike and camp .

    Both your sides are sexy Gerry, some would say.. Loved the seemingly slow meander as you started to gain some height and indeed you were rewarded with some lovely views over Derryveagh . Lovely bog and peatlands , and its great to know that industrial scale exploitation is now coming to an end, save for just the land owners personal use. Nothing beats the turf fire in Western Ireland. The corry loughs guaranteed a good supply of water for your 35 cups of tea . Lough Nakrabacknabrannanabrak looked cool. Another great hike and bivvy Gerry. Colin

      Cheers Colin👍 Your spelling (like my pronunciation) isn't too far off as is the estimation of the number of cups of tea😊 Which side is best is always a matter of opinion😊 it is one of those areas (like some in Kerry) that have a magical magnetism that smits you when you visit and then it has you in its power for ever more😊

    A worthy participant in the Bog Olympics Gerry! 🏆 That was some ground you covered with so many beautiful Loughs 🤗 Such a great mountain range for wild camping and you showed them off so well! You’d imagine that’s the last of the frost now for the season…although we know what’s in store before long 😏 Looked like a great trip and gets me in the mood for more exploring and outdoor sleeping!!

      Cheers Miriam👍 so much potential over the whole of the Derryveaghs for wild camping and so quiet away from the main attraction of Errigal. Visiting the loughs was great especially those I had only seen from high above on the tops. We both know that going off the beaten track can bear rewards😊 I think I was entered in the long jump and high jump combined in the bog😊

    Class Gerry, I had a go at the 7 sisters route over Easter, and watching this took me back. Like yourself I loved Nadreegar and was tempted to camp there, had planned to camp at Feeane but ran out of time too and ended up camping down at the col at Aluirg. Turned out a nice wee spot and was fresh to take on that climb up to Beg in the morning, that is a beast! Lough Altan is one of the most scenic places I have ever visited, in fact I stopped for lunch there and didn't want to leave! You definitely have a better handle on the pronunciations than me Gerry, I struggled a bit with all of the names, but that blooper made me feel a bit better! Fairplay for doing the bivi, that sounds like it was a cold one, but I'm gonna have to try that new feet warming technique 🤣 Thanks again for sharing another classic Gerry! ATB.

      Cheers 👍 that whole area is brilliant for walking and wild camping with so many options. Visiting the loughs was a great motivation doing something slightly different and I could have camped at anyone of them. My camp spot at Lough Feeane was great and either the gloves or second pair of socks work a treat with my cold feet😊 The 7 Sisters was a tough haul I am sure👍

    Another brilliant adventure so well documented, Gerry. I like that you got down in the ditch to place the camera to film you walking over on the plank. That is dedication to filmmaking detail :). I also parked at Procklis Lough where the fish farm is, to climb the Aghlas. But I had a challenging return as I followed the east bank of Altan Lough and there had been so much rain that I couldn't wade the head of the outflowing river and had to carry on all the way to get to below the smaller lough and walk back over the road bridge. A few fences to negotiate, so maybe I should have gone your route across the beach and headed for the road. Oh well, it wasn't too bad, as I got my photograph, taken from the top of Aghla Beg, on the front cover of Mountainviews quarterly after I wrote up a review and uploaded it in late 2019. Which I was pretty chuffed with ! What a landscape. I can't wait to get back in September. All the best and thanks for the dedicated work you do to show the beauty of Ireland's hills and loughs.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers James, I have walked the wet east side of Altan Lough and also found the river impossible to cross as it left the lough on that occasion and it all made for the adventure😊 Procklis Lough takes bit to get to though it is a great starting point for the hills in the area away from the busy Errigal carpark👍 I will have to revisit your article in Mountain Views👍 I hope your return in September is a good one.

    Walking the plank takes on a different meaning here Gerry. Interesting conversation as regards the peat. You can't really expect local folk who have been harvesting and burning peat for their personal use, to give up because of some gov't edict. You are getting fabulous weather! Any midges? Your camera work is outstanding! When are you going to submit stuff for the National Geographic? Wow! That Silhouette !!!! What happened to the bacon and sausage butties? Frost! Aaah! That was a substantial farmhouse in the middle of nowhere! Just imagine getting the material up there to build it. Great stuff!

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      Tom, the sausage and bacon was only there as my nephew would have eaten sheep poo rather than noodles and tuna😊 It is an interesting discussion on the peat cutting and I know that having a 'moss' was a thing even within my family at one stage. Industrial cutting for power generation and for garden compost surely has to stop for these important habitats. I am sure there were midges though it was way too windy so they were hugging the ground. There is an old bog road down to Altan Lough and the old farmhouse that no doubt saw plenty of horse and cart activity in its day and it is a truly wonderful place😊

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean 2 роки тому +1

      Yes indeed Gerry, I very much agree on the industrial scale cutting being banned and the compost option also, but I'm very reluctant to remove the traditional way of heating homes for the older generation who have known nothing else and whose cottages have no other means of heating. You are doing a fabulous job of opening up these remote regions to everyone. You take care! No slips or falls, mind!

    Fantastic coverage of the area Gerry with some tough pronunciations ;-) I have some fond recent memories of that area. I did my first “proper solo wild camp “ at Lough Altan a couple of years ago. Approached that after coming down the north side of Errigal and dandered up Aghla More, Feenan but couldn’t get proper views of Nabrackbaddy lough due to time. Last year I also hopped, skipped and jumped those same bogs at the start of your hike. Wont forget that in a hurry!

      @@gerrymcveigh To be honest Gerry I probably wouldn’t do it again unless I was with another person. It was pretty hairy with loose gravel and rocks. I was nearly half skiing on the way down. How was it on the way up ? Lol.
      I must say though when you are descending there you will notice a secluded beach on the far end of Altan. It’s a bit of a battle to get there but it’s a cracking camping spot. Just beautiful. I spent an hour there just sipping tea and watching trout on a feeding frenzy. Had a telescopic fishing rod with me and thought I was having trout for dinner that night. Got to the “farmhouse” end and spent a few hours fishing and caught zilch. It was pretty desolate with no signs of fish. Still had a great time hiking and camping. What a spot.

    How often do you come across other walkers?

    • @gerrymcveigh

      Cheers Alan👍 I tend to study the weather very carefully to avoid the rain as much as possible🌧 when wild camping and filming as it just wouldn't work too well I think. Plenty of wet and windy weather on other walks that I don't film here in Ireland😊 Many of the places I visit are very quiet and at times I meet no other walkers or only a few, especially in my favourite areas such as Donegal or Mayo.
