  • A new wild camp spot in the Bluestack Mountains. Starting at the Old Schoolhouse in the Reelan River valley and following the Efferanagh River up into the hills to the summits of Glascarns Hill and Croaghbane. A descent (along a new ridge) to the corrie lough of Cronloughan and a wild camp. Interesting autumnal weather and thankfully midge free😊

    One of your favourite places in all of Ireland.... GMcV
    Gerry, you're giving me a lump in my throat! Fine spot indeed - starting there at the Croaghs schoolhouse so famed as the source of so much Irish bealoideas (folklore) in the national archives. Nearby also to the old farmhouse where the survivors of the WW2 RAF Sunderland found refuge. In 2021 the only flights soaring over those peaks are golden eagles! Yes, a couple of pairs thereabouts. Peace and tranquility and views to salve the soul......but across the way - half way to the Achla ridgeline - a view to be soon marred by wind turbines. At Graffy. A heartfelt plea here from a local man - save our landscapes, save one of Donegal's last wildernesses, SAVE GRAFFY!

      Joseph, it sounds like the old schoolhouse is worth looking into more👍 Would love to see those eagles in the Bluestacks. There are great views over to Achla and the Derryveaghs from here and it would be an absolute shame to have a wind farm built there.

    Ah Gerry what a treat, from the old school house, we had jacket hooks like that in my school too! Upto the very fancy farm, your B-roll is just the best, stopping to clock the small things in such a vast and endless landscape 🕷❤👍⛰🐏
    And those veiws back down the ridge and the Loch, towards your proposed campsite, wow! 👌🏕🤗
    Very atmospheric indeed, pleased the rain didn't dampen your spirits, certainly made your movie extra special to watch. The darkness seems to come out of nowhere these past few weeks huh, what a beautiful morning, wow! 🌞😁
    You did well to find a picth, looked like very wet and rocky terrain 🪨 🇮🇪 nice to getbthe kit dried out too we'd wager! 🤗🐛🦋

      Ceri & Kat, thank you😊 The evenings are definitely drawing in at a pace and can make for a long night in the tent. Wet and rocky is a good description of the Bluestacks👍, much easier to find good pitches up on the summits than down low, though I am glad that I had the chance to explore this area and spend the night. The weather was grand really😊 Thank you for watching and commenting and have a great week ahead👍😊

    Great solo over nighter Gerry, the weather wasnt really that bad at all . Loved the rolling mist on the ridges and dont think I would have pitched at the lough either, because rest assured if there was only one feckin midgy in the whole of the Bluestack it would have found me. Very relaxed wild camp, great stuff. ATVB Colin.

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Cheers Colin, it wasn't that bad (certainly compared to the rain you had in Killarney🌧) and added to the experience. I thought there might have been even one wee bit of suitable ground at the lough, though not a chance. Was happy enough where I eventually settled. Not sure why the midges🦟 weren't out as at times the wind dropped down - hopefully that is the start of them disappearing😊 it was good to be out after a couple of months away from wild camping👍😊

    A fantastic vlog Gerry. You captured the "atmosphere" and the sheet isolation of that particular part of the blue stacks...talk about getting away from it all.... Nice route taken, great pics of caterpillars and great sound quality too 👌.. I've parked at the schoolhouse and need to venture more to the right of ardnageer weather dependent as always.... Great commentary and excellent videography (if that's a real word) .. cool tent ⛺

      Cheers Merky, there is plenty to explore all over the Bluestacks - I have really only spent more time in that area in the past year and it has been worthwhile, though the classic walk over the main tops is hard to beat. There wasn't another soul around over that weekend and I definitely got away from it all😊 Thank you for the kind words👍👍

    On the road again Gerry! Times were a lot rougher/tougher and expectations were a lot lower back then. We are more comfortable now but are we any happier today? You gotta wonder. Doesn't look very inviting to me Gerry, never mind being atmospheric! lol Admittedly a lot more pleasant in the morning! Love the hairy mary caterpillar! So hard to identify what moth or butterfly it will be. Keep safe!

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому

      Tom, I can only imagine that if you lived in that valley it was probably your entire world back in the day, with none of the tarmac roads and transport options we have today. it wasn't that inviting though that is all part of the experience of being in the mountains😊 and the morning definitely made up for it. You keep safe on your travels too👍

    • @TomMcClean
      @TomMcClean 2 роки тому +2

      That's right about the valley Gerry. Then when word came about the possibility of a new life and a new start in the new world across the seas they young people jumped at it and the old folks were left in sadness behind never to see their children again. Life was soooooo hard. My wee aunt Mary never ventured more that 10 miles from her home in Rathfriland. She was cowed into submission and complete subservience by my dominating grandmother! That was her life and again sadly she accepted it. She had no chance and no real life.

    Another lovely video Gerry, I really liked the industrious spider, fury caterpillar shots and the audio of the water sounds. Great you got to travel along new ground, I can imagine it must be nice to have a fresh perspective of views along the way. I haven't been to the Bluestack Mountains yet so its a real treat to see what's in store when I do visit. I do love a night in a tent at a mountain lake - my favourite spots when the midges allow! I've had two failed attempts at making videos on recent visits to Donegal when the weather gods have conspired against me, holed up taking cover from torrential rain or midge attacks don't make good viewing or recording! An entertaining watch as ever 👍

    • @gerrymcveigh
      @gerrymcveigh  2 роки тому +1

      Miriam, it was great to explore that area (not sure if will need to revisit now that I have been there though😊). The Bluestacks are fantastic and the classic walk over the main ridge is a great one to do with loads of places to wild camp over the tops and plenty of water sources. I need to camp beside some sort of water for all my cups of tea!! Sorry to hear about the weather on those 2 trips (always tough to call the weather so far out west/north I find) and I hope you have plans to return and complete your videos (maybe even in the Bluestacks?)👍👍

    Hi gerry. Hey a good start for Saturday in one of your fave places. Did you ever used to hide in the coats that hung at school ? We did. It was great fun. Good fun up there to. I agree that Loch and its surrounds looks healthy - can't begrudge it that eh? But you found an island and that's what it was by the looks. Good going. As for the walk out - yeah gotta watch them big holes. All lots of fun again though. Another great time out. All the best as always. Mark

      Cheers Mark, we got up to plenty of stuff in the locker rooms at school, though it is hard to imagine what it must have been like to be in a school of this size compared to my own experience of a large school with hundreds of pupils. Always good to explore new places and this was well worth the effort😊

    Loved your hike in the Bluestack Mountains. Even the rain looks inviting. (Easy for me to say as I'm sitting in my recliner.) So, what did you do with your wet socks and boots? Do you sleep with them on? I have another question ... I take it that it is safe to drink the water from a lake or stream? Do you need to boil it first? I still plan on a trip to Ireland in the Spring. Ireland is nothing short of magical. Such lovely, friendly people ... and scenery beyond compare. Thanks so much for another wonderful video!!

    • @gerrymcveigh

      Kriss, thank you for watching and your kind comments. The wet socks went on again in the morning after being wrung out - cold and wet for a while though they soon warmed up and were grand😊 I usually boil water for around 5 minutes though would also drink straight from remote streams and loughs (with no negative consequences so far). The rain was sort of inviting though a few hours was a bit too long in my mind🌧 Spring time would be cool for a trip to Ireland and the people are friendly all year round👍😊
