      Yup, WATCH THE VIDEO.
"One" in the Metallica song "One", was referring to the, one in 1000000.... Something, OF WAR trauma patients in a disconnected state of stimulus consciousness. Or a block of touch by pain. (worse than hellen kellar as there is no touch stimuli) Where nothing can be done to reach their mind.

    • @Swampster70
      @Swampster70 3 роки тому +8

      Not literal.
The song is about James' ultimate nightmare. Not being able to communicate in any way with anyone else. The song only became about the soldier after his brother told him about the movie "Johnny got a gun" and gave him an easy way to construct the lyrics about someone that had no ability to communicate.

    • @davidbeck6188

      The true horrors of war.
But those lyrics are so deep and so real that it also speaks to the horrors many people experience just having to wake up every day with no hope and no true ability to cope with the realities of life.
Life is a battle all in itself for far too many people. A agonizing war that rages on until the bitter end. So tragic.

    • @Swampster70

@@davidbeck6188 For about 20 years I tried to coax the littlest information out of my dad about his time in India in WW2. I got nothing. Sober, drunk, away at friends, away on holiday on a different Continent.... All I ever got from him was a few memories and him reaching for photos of his with his regiment. There were a couple of pictures that always stopped the conversation and I felt they meant the most to him. Those are the ones I treasure from his past the most. I don't display them but I will honor them forever.
From talking to others this is the same.
I didn't have the best childhood - not the richest, but his and my mothers love meant so much. I remember the simplest things so much.

It’s refreshing that younger generations. Let alone the young black generation is exposing themselves to rock and metal. They’re discovering more and more music. It’s a shame that the young black generation doesn’t know more about their culture and influence in music. Especially rock, blues and metal. The collaborations in the 80’s and 90’s with Aerosmith and run dmc, anthrax and public enemy, in living color, Hendrix, slash, Tom morello and zack de la roach. There are tons of black and also half black musicians that the younger generations should know. School really needs to teach it during history and art especially.

James only sings like 3 minutes out of nearly 8, but the music tells the story. The lyrics convey context, but the music conveys emotion throughout, loneliness, despondency, sadness, and the primal desperation of someone who is unable to live and unable to die pleading for someone to make it all stop, but unable to communicate that to anyone. He has no arms, no legs, can't see, can't speak, cannot communicate with the outside world - he just exists in his own mind. Imagine that darkness is all that you will ever see and pain is all that you will ever feel. Well, This song is about a soldier fighting in a war and a mortar blows off in his face. He can't hear, see, smell, taste and he doesn't have arms or legs. He comes out of a coma in a hospital. During the time he is in the hospital he reflects on his life and things his father told him. Eventually the doctors get worried because he's having spasms all the time, but he doesn't seem to be dying. They call in the general and he can't figure it out either but the soldier with the general recognizes it. "It's Morse code," he says. The general asks what he is saying and the soldier looks for a minute and then says, "He is saying K-I-L-L- M-E over and over again."
As I recall, the lyrics are based on the 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, which is about World War I. A specific passage that inspired the song is: "How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to one shot. But if he does win, you'll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I'd read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn't believe it, cos it's a million to one. But a million to ONE always leaves one. I'd never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. One."
James Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older half brother, David Hale, who was also in a band.
In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie that was directed by Trumbo starring Timothy Bottoms and Jason Robards. The video for the song uses images and monologues from that movie.
This was the first single released by the band to feature bassist Jason Newsted, who continued playing with Metallica until 2001. You have to listen very carefully to hear his playing, however, since the bass was buried in the mix.

This song is based on a book/movie called Johny Got His Gun. The official music video has clips from the movie. It's a story about a soldier that lost all of his limbs and his face to a landmine. As a result he lost his sight, hearing and ability to speak and is kept alive by machines. His only form of communication is banging his head against the pillow in a morse code pattern. In return, someone taps out morse code on his forehead in response. It gets to the point that he just wants to die but has no way to do it himself. So then he taps kill me over and over again. He eventually gives up and refuses to communicate anymore. He just lays there waiting to die.

I love seeing reactions like this. I still get goose-bumps when I see how others react, especially at about 5 min and 26 seconds into the song. I grew up listening to Metallica every now and then, but didn't appreciate them much until I turned 16 in 1993 and installed a massive stereo system (six 12 inch subs and 16 other speakers) into my vehicle with money I had been saving up for a few years. I don't know what all you guys can hear on your setup, but headphones and a Walkman from the 80's didn't do it for me. It wasn't until I could hear all the ranges of sound on a quality system that I feel in love with Metallica's music. Unless you're listening really close, you can't always hear the bass and drum work on albums before the Metallica Black album. Now days, a good set of headphones will do, but when I heard One for the first time on six 12's, I was instantly converted into a mega-fan. And ever since, I've always been much more into how the music moves me, not necessarily the words. Don't get me wrong, Metallica has some deep messages, but to me, they only need to give you a little taste with the lyrics and then the music tells the rest of the story. When people ask me what kind of music I like the most, I respond with 'Metallica' because to me, they are their own genre. Great job guys! Loved the video!

The singer basically puts himself in the shoes of a soldier who stepped on a landline. That landmine took all of his limbs, his ability to see, speak and hear and in general it took everything from him.
This soldier is being kept alive by machines "fed through the tube that sticks in me". And he doesn't want to live "hold my breath as I wish for death" but he can't kill himself - "I cannot live I cannot die, body my holding cell". A prisoner in his own body.

Phenomenal song that is even better once you understand the story. Based off of a novel that was written in either the late 1930s or early 1940s, the song is of a soldier that had stepped into a land mine that had blown him to bits but miraculously he somehow survived. With no arms, no legs, no face, he is blind, cannot hear, cannot speak, but lives life in severe constant pain. This is why the melodic strings in the beginning of the song have a melancholy feel to it. True artistry this song is in the way builds up to the solo at the end which ends with the man finally succumbing to his wounds.
