The story of Metallica's One is definitely one of the most powerful stories ever told in music. The actual music video helps portray it so much better, and I would love to see you two watch it.
But as the lyrics foretell, as the lady with glasses pointed out, the lyrics are about a man who is heavily disfigured during an explosion in World War I. He's found barely alive, literally by a hairs thread, yet even though many people of the military suggest to let him pass away, even stating that death has a dignity all of it's own, he is taken into medical care and kept alive. But as the songs words say, he's lost everything. Both arms, both legs, his sight, hearing, voice. He's is trapped inside his own body, with nothing but his own thoughts for company. He is literally One. The song and the music video (which features clips from the movie based off of the novel Johnny Got His Gun) both portray how he goes through the emotions of what's happened to him. The start of the song is slow and almost peaceful, symbolizing him waking up after his injury induced coma,
    "I can't remember anything,
Can't tell if this is true or dream.
Deep down inside I feel to scream,
    This terrible silence stops me.
Now that the war is through with me,
I'm waking up I can not see.
That there's not much left of me,
Nothing is real but pain now.
Hold my breath as I wish for death.
    Oh please god, wake me."
These lyrics are about how he slowly realizes what's happened to him, and while he remains calm to begin with, he still wishes he could die since there's literally nothing left for him to live for but he can't even hold his own breath to kill himself since he has a machine breathing for him.
"Back in the womb its much too real,
in pumps life that I must feel.
But can't look forward to reveal,
Look to the time when I'll live.
Fed through the tube that sticks in me,
    Just like a wartime novelty.
Tied to machines that make me be,
Cut this life off from me.
Hold my breath as I wish for death,
    Oh please god, wake me."
These particular lyrics are the realization that he's just truly stuck. Like being in the womb. He can't move, he can't do anything. He's taken care of by a tube that sticks into him. Machines literally keeping him alive. Made and forgotten by war, like so many before him, just like a simple novelty.
As the song progresses, the tempo picks up, and it becomes more aggressive and powerful. The section with the drums and the guitar, the "Da da da da da! Da da da da da! Da da da da DA DA!" part is meant to sound like machine gun fire during the battle, as that's the last thing he remembers before being blown up by a landmine. And the song becomes faster, heavier and more aggressive to symbolize the soldiers anger and fear as to what's happened to him as he realizes that nothing can be done for him.
"Now the world is gone I'm just one,
    Oh god help me.
Hold my breath as I wish for death,
    Oh please god help me.
    Darkness, imprisoning me.
    All that I see,
    Absolute horror.
    I cannot live.
    I cannot die.
    Trapped within myself.
    Body my holding cell.
    Landmine, has taken my sight.
    Taken my speech.
    Taken my hearing.
    Taken my arms.
    Taken my legs.
    Taken my soul.
Left me with life in hell."
He even thinks to himself "If I had arms, I could kill myself. If I had a voice, I could talk to myself and be some kind of company for myself. I could cry out for help, but no one would hear me, they can't hear me... They'll never help me... If I had legs, I could run away..." and the more he's left with his own thoughts, the more and more he falls into complete despair as he becomes lost and separated from being a human and even really being alive. He is literally just One.
And the ending solo is as fast and crazy aggressive as it is to symbolize the pain and mental torture he's endlessly going through while constantly feeling fear...
As I said, one of the most powerful stories ever told in music.

Cause there is no way a healthy person can imagine something like that, and quite frankly, you don't want to. Johnny Got His Gun was the most amazing and most terrifying book I've ever read. It was horrible. The way it was written was so intense and so suggestive that it planted that image right into my head. I didn't get a decent sleep for several weeks after that cause laying in my bed in the dark and silent room, not moving... I would get real paranoid and then I'd pace all over my house with lights on, making sure that my limbs and my eyes and ears were still working.

    • @isaiahwelch8066
      @isaiahwelch8066 5 років тому +13

@@Eris_Norregard : Many people don't know is that SOS came about because of the Titanic disaster in 1912. The international call for help at that time was the letters CQD, or "come quickly, distress!" And, CQD was a British call, and White Star Line, the company behind Titanic, was also British, Titanic used the British call for help. One other change to ships at sea: All ships must maintain communications at all times, day or night. During Titanic's sinking, the SS Californian, was only ten miles away, and because their radio operator had gone to bed, they did not know Titanic was sinking.

I now have the love of my life waking up beside me every morning, blaming me for farting and letting 'em ferment. Oh, and the snores. I love her and will never let her go.
My two beautiful daughters play in the back yard, careless of a cruel world. I'm a happy man, even though, at times, I wake from the shit I've seen, shivering, from what I've had to do. Mates I lost. Pieces. But then I listen to Laura and Luna play out there, and the darkness vanishes like dew in the morning sun. The dark will always remain in me, but love brigthens it. Makes me want to stay and not give up.

You think that killing is not necessary? Go tell a Muslim that you are an infidel and that you need punished. Hell, just tell them you pray to any god other than theirs. I’d have to add, for those unfamiliar with the story of “Johnny Get Your Gun”, that it’s about a young who gets all blown to hell during war. He loses his arms and legs, he loses his whole face...to include his abilities to see, speak, or listen. The only sensation he has left is *touch*, but without his other senses, he’s unsure if what he’s experiencing via touch is “just a dream” or not. He’s left in limbo, unsure if he’s alive or dead. All he knows is, if he is alive...he doesn’t want to live like this anymore.
Knowing that about clips in the original video makes it all the more meaningful.
Again, this is in regards to those unfamiliar with the story.

I was literally locked in my body and would scream in my head until I blacked out. This song is A VERY GOOD DESCRIPTION of what it is like. The first thing that I was able to do was hold my breath, and I would literally hold my breath hoping I would die but the ventilator alarm would go off and they would come pouring into the room. But I could never hold it long enough.Ended up taking me almost two years to learn how to crawl stand and walk again but I made a full recovery.People take the little things for granted. When you can't scratch your face or tell anyone to scratch it for you and you just have to lay there screaming in your head, you realize very quickly how awesome it is just to scratch your nose whenever you need to.Appreciate the little things, they're the first things you'll miss, and miss the most, the second you can't do them.

It gives me hope to see how such fine, yet harsh, art can leave two young souls speechless. That one hit you straight in the heart, didn't it?... :)

It's been awhile since i last saw them. 2010 during the Rust In Peace 20th anniversary tour. What a kickass show, they basically played nearly every song on RIP, except for the title track.
I should go and check them out again this year, if they happen to come into my country again.

yeah, that must have sucked. But hey, you got to hear all the other songs on the album, right? I'm sure it was a killer show regardless. They'll be coming to the States near me in late May, I do hope they come close to you and that you get the chance to see them live again, you never know when bands as old as Megadeth are gonna go out for good.

Actually it's based on the book. They used clips of the film in the music video though, and eventually bought the rights for the entire film to quit paying up royalties.

This song was written to move the listener. It is literally about a fate worse than death. I am so glad that you looked at the lyric video instead of the music video. When people react to the music video, the words get lost in the images. I am also thankful that you found out what the song is really about prior to listening to it. Of the dozens of reaction videos I have seen for this song; I do not remember any really being move by the full understanding. God bless the Warriors who fight the Good fight... Never Forget.

But maybe not for the first listening. The music, the lyrics, the video summarizing the story of a movie, plus the dialogues from the movie added to the music - combine all of that with the fact that english isn't their first language and it could get really overwhelming.

Song was written after the lead singer (James Hetfield) watched a movie set during the Korean War where a U.S. Army soldier loses his arms, legs, sight, hearing, and his ability to speak...he uses Morse Code my tapping his forehead on a Dr's hand, telling the Dr over and over "Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me"....as a combat vet who served two tours in Iraq, can't say I've ever seen someone so wounded as the character in the movie is and survive, although I've seen what an IED does to the human body, up close and ugly....this song is from the 1986 album ....And Justice For All....Harvester of Sorrow also kicks ass from that album...
