The story of Metallica's One is definitely one of the most powerful stories ever told in music. The actual music video helps portray it so much better, and I would love to see you two watch it. @Southern Son don't throw stones when you live in a glass house kid. They should know the lyrics and being in war is something obviously a microcosm of the world has experience with.
That's like saying, "Getting into a car crash in a Nascar race is relatable to wrecking your tricycle as a child", I can have empathy, but I can not relate whatsoever.
The song is based off the Novel "Johnny Got His Gun" the plot is basically this...Joe Bonham, a young American soldier serving in World War I, awakens in a hospital bed after being caught in the blast of an exploding artillery shell. He gradually realizes that he has lost his arms, legs, and all of his face (including his eyes, ears, teeth, and tongue), but that his mind functions perfectly, leaving him a prisoner in his own body. It's a fascinating book about the horror of war.

There are great pop songs that are full of meaning... And there are lots of metal songs that don't mean anything. Tell me there isn't meaning and thought on this song: ua-cam.com/video/gH476CxJxfg/v-deo.html Or this one: ua-cam.com/video/50VWOBi0VFs/v-deo.html We can't judge a whole genre based on the amount of garbage that it brings. We may miss the few that actually are good... I listen to a lot of genres on my daily basis due to my work, and believe me... There are deep meaningful songs in almost every genre... But I'll agree on one thing, it's harder to find these kind of songs lately...

Afgha vet here. Thank you for this reaction, albeit obviously this song isn't related to Afghanistan. More like V. But in either case, the suffering is timeless. Often since I came back, I wished, longed, prayed, for Death to consume me, but I was fortunate enough to, for once, not to have the courage to DO it. I now have the love of my life waking up beside me every morning, blaming me for farting and letting 'em ferment. Oh, and the snores. I love her and will never let her go. My two beautiful daughters play in the back yard, careless of a cruel world. I'm a happy man, even though, at times, I wake from the shit I've seen, shivering, from what I've had to do. Mates I lost. Pieces. But then I listen to Laura and Luna play out there, and the darkness vanishes like dew in the morning sun. The dark will always remain in me, but love brigthens it. Makes me want to stay and not give up.

I'd watch a followup reaction to the official video. The song is based on a book called Johnny Got His Gun, and the video uses footage from the film. The audio clips from the film distract from the lyrics which is why it wasn't recommended for a first exposure.
I’d have to add, for those unfamiliar with the story of “Johnny Get Your Gun”, that it’s about a young who gets all blown to hell during war. He loses his arms and legs, he loses his whole face...to include his abilities to see, speak, or listen. The only sensation he has left is *touch*, but without his other senses, he’s unsure if what he’s experiencing via touch is “just a dream” or not. He’s left in limbo, unsure if he’s alive or dead. All he knows is, if he is alive...he doesn’t want to live like this anymore. Knowing that about clips in the original video makes it all the more meaningful. Again, this is in regards to those unfamiliar with the story.
This is the first time I've really listened to the song without the video, just the lyrics and the music. As much as the song always moved me and left my eyes burning with tears, this went beyond that. I can barely see the screen from the tears I can't hold back. This is a keeper.
the actual music video fleshes out this story, and really drives it home how horrific the situation is, to the point where you actually are glad for the nurse at the end.
Awesome reaction vid. I was listening to this in car the other day, at full volume of course. My windows were down and I looked at the car next to me and there were two 8-9 year old kids (A boy and a girl) and both were banging their heads to the tune I was playing. Dad in the front seat gave me a thumbs up and threw up his horns. Good to see proper parenting! Subscribed to see more. Any Ronnie James Dio would be great!

This song is VERY special to me because I caught a rare spinal cord disease at 16 and spent 4 months completely paralyzed and on a ventilator with no way to communicate other than blinking. I was literally locked in my body and would scream in my head until I blacked out. This song is A VERY GOOD DESCRIPTION of what it is like. The first thing that I was able to do was hold my breath, and I would literally hold my breath hoping I would die but the ventilator alarm would go off and they would come pouring into the room. But I could never hold it long enough.Ended up taking me almost two years to learn how to crawl stand and walk again but I made a full recovery.People take the little things for granted. When you can't scratch your face or tell anyone to scratch it for you and you just have to lay there screaming in your head, you realize very quickly how awesome it is just to scratch your nose whenever you need to.Appreciate the little things, they're the first things you'll miss, and miss the most, the second you can't do them.
@Erick Berriz Both Kirk Hammet and Lars Ulrich grew up in stable homes and credit their parents for their musical ability. James had a rough childhood, from growing up Jehovahs Witness to his mother and father's deaths when he was a teen. They've had 3 bassists so who the hell knows there but the band does tell stories about Cliff Burtons mom being close. I'm no Metallica super-fan and I don't really care about their personal lives but that is information I've gleaned from their interviews and movies over the years.

But maybe not for the first listening. The music, the lyrics, the video summarizing the story of a movie, plus the dialogues from the movie added to the music - combine all of that with the fact that english isn't their first language and it could get really overwhelming.

Song was written after the lead singer (James Hetfield) watched a movie set during the Korean War where a U.S. Army soldier loses his arms, legs, sight, hearing, and his ability to speak...he uses Morse Code my tapping his forehead on a Dr's hand, telling the Dr over and over "Kill Me, Kill Me, Kill Me"....as a combat vet who served two tours in Iraq, can't say I've ever seen someone so wounded as the character in the movie is and survive, although I've seen what an IED does to the human body, up close and ugly....this song is from the 1986 album ....And Justice For All....Harvester of Sorrow also kicks ass from that album...

The song is based on the book and movie "Johnny got a gun." It is a very emotional experience either way you experience it.

That was said before she knew the extent of the song.
Southern Son hehehehe
Yeah, such hypocrisy, why did you go to fight in Afghanistan in the first place? Don't you know that sticks and stones will break your bones. War - what is it good for - absolutely nothing. Did you think, u go killing people to defend your constitution? Ass...
@@petegrusky2715 No, he is defending the country, from threats of another. Wanting to take over and kill everyone who doesn't bow down to them. You think that killing is not necessary? Go tell a Muslim that you are an infidel and that you need punished. Hell, just tell them you pray to any god other than theirs. You will soon understand what soldiers are actually defending against.

I think now you can watch the original music video, it's is very emotional.
You don't have to do it in a reaction video (or you can of course).
I'd watch a followup reaction to the official video. The song is based on a book called Johnny Got His Gun, and the video uses footage from the film. The audio clips from the film distract from the lyrics which is why it wasn't recommended for a first exposure.
I've seen that video countless times and it still gets me everytime.
Yeah the video adds a whole nother level of understanding to the song and the lyrics
This is the first time I've really listened to the song without the video, just the lyrics and the music. As much as the song always moved me and left my eyes burning with tears, this went beyond that. I can barely see the screen from the tears I can't hold back. This is a keeper.

@Erick Berriz That's not really accurate.
The problem with the music video is at times you miss the lyrics because of the video 😔
