  • SHOP NOTES: Getting the most out of your miter gauge begins with a decent miter gauge! Of course, this is just my opinion, but since the mid-1980's I've been convinced that the best miter gauge that comes as standard equipment with any table saw is the Shopsmith miter gauge. This video has a surprising lack of tool usage; which I didn't notice until I gathered up all my footage and photos tonight. Oh, well... More to come.

    I pick up one of your favorite knock offs.
    A total shop for the full price of $40.00
    It only had a drill chuck and the guy said he did not have the key for it.
    Anyway, I have taken the table off and I found a total shot bandsaw, So both tables have now been milled out to take the shopsmith miter gauge.
    Fun watching your videos and learning about shopsmith.

    Great video and agree it is the best. I have an original Magna Mark VII SS miter gauge. very similar to the early Mark V gauge…but instead of the knurled knob to lock the protractor, it has a ‘butterfly’ pinch lever. Some might think it might not secure as well, but mine has never failed to hold the angle. Also, when Shopsmith tables (on TS and Bandsaw) moved to t-slots, didnt the newer gauge pick up a ‘washer’ on the bar that kept ‘in the t slot’? Guessing it came into being with the 510 table.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  Рік тому +1

      Wow, it looks like you’re doing the whole time traveling! Yes, the 510 did introduce the washer and the T-slot miter slot. It’s a very nice improvement. my brother-in-law in Minnesota has a Mark VII for me, but we just haven’t arranged the prisoner swap yet. I’m looking forward to playing with it because it’s been many many years since I have had access to one. Scott

      @@MyGrowthRings Good luck with your Mark VII endeavor! It has it’s good points and bad points (everybody hears about the cam, rack, switch). Mine are all still original. I also have the early table height knob which Magna seemed to quickly redesign to I think the more numerous round wheel and spinning lock knob that is similar to what is on a Mark V. Been happy to own it…and like most things Shopsmith, it will likely outlast me. Let me know if you have any Mark VII questions…I am on the FB group and the forum. Always willing to help. I used to own a shops moth and miss it very much. You are correct the miter gauge is/was one of the stars of the system. I loved that miter gauge. I am looking at buying a Ridgid table saw from home depot. How can i find out if the Shopsmith and the shop smith INCRA will fit it?

    Scott, I've completely wore out my miter gauge. It came to me bearing the scares of abuse form the previous owners and I added to the damage over the years. I have always been interested in the Incra miter gauge and thought "one day." But the lack of the slot/tapered screw worries me. I use that feature all the time on the main table and belt sander table. I have the MiterSet Standard which has been wonderful, so I have a way to accurately set the the protractor. I see my options as a used Shopsmith gauge, Incra gauge from Shopsmith, or a new gauge from Shopsmith. If you could have only one gauge which would it be?
    Sorry for zombie post, but I remember watching this one years ago but it is relevant to me now considering my current dilemma. I guess that's why they call it 'evergreen content?'

      I’ve done a little UA-cam time traveling myself, so I get it. If you have a MiterSet then the stock SS miter gauge is all you need. The Incra Miter is nice, but once it’s locked down the standard miter gauge is a great tool. Scott

    Dont know if you're still checking these comments, but great video! I came across it looking for "Shopsmith mitre gauge".
    I still use my 35 yr old SS 500 on a regular basis! I have 3 Q's: 1. Can I find an old SS M Gauge and remove the slotted bar, and replace that with a 3\4 slotted bar? Or is that kind of 3\4 bar completely not available anywhere (meaning I would have to have one made)? 2. I have no riving knife or splitter on the SS table saw. I can't imagine I could jury rig either one to my SS bc of the way one often adjusts the blade in and out. 3. The fence on the 500 is the only thing that sucks. Besides buying an expensive upgraded table extension\fence system from SS, are you aware of any way to increase the sliding accuracy of the SS fence I have?
    I hope u read this, and thanks for the video!

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому

      I've known a few people who have had 3/4" steel bar stock milled to accept the Shopsmith miter gauge parts, so it can be done. The best way to mount a riving knife onto an early Shopsmith is to make a fixed one that is mounted to a wooden zero clearance insert. The biggest issue folks seem to have with the 500 fence is that they are trying to use the set screws in the base casting to do their alignment. Is that the case with yours? Scott

    • @shaboo2
      @shaboo2 2 роки тому

      @@MyGrowthRings Yes, to the best of my knowledge, that's the only reason they're there! They help lock it down, too, but they set the straightness once the lockdown knob is tightened. Bc the other end is free floating, it's not hard to lock it it a position where the front and back are not parallel to the blade. Is that what u meant?

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  2 роки тому

      @@shaboo2 Nope. They are only there for misalignment. I did a video on the 510 fence where I talk about the single set screw in the face of its base, and on the 500 fence it’s even more important not to use them for alignment. Let me locate that vid.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  6 років тому

      Chuck Stiver Old, yes, but ai’m still here. Back in the 1990’s shopsmith offered a 3/8 X 3/4 “standard” miter bar for this miter gauge as well as their crosscut sled, but they wound up dropping them from their line when they closed their Woodworking Unlimited stores and went back to focusing entirely on Shopsmith tools. That said, it wouldn’t be hard at all to have a machine shop whip out a few of them.

    Old thread but informative thread! Hi from Swansboro. I picked up a V500 using your loading technique to put it in the back of my truck. Really enjoyed the info about the Miter Gauge. Used the locking screw in miter bar today to make a rip fence on my band saw to rip some heart cherry. Nice! One question. Do you know what the purpose is for the threaded hole nearer to the end of the miter bar?

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  5 років тому +2

      Hey James. So glad my tips helped you and yes, I do know what that threaded hole in the miter bar is for. For several years before the pistol grip was introduced there was a hold-down available that mounted into that hole on the front and into the threaded hole in the center of the protractor in the back. It was replaced by the superior pistol grip, but it actually did a better job supporting wider boards, though it was a little awkward to use. Scott

    Very nice design. Unfortunately It appears that the Shopsmith pistol grip miter with drop down hold bar does not fit most table saws. I'm surprised that Shopsmith never made the exact same 510 for the conventional slot table saws.

    • @MyGrowthRings
      @MyGrowthRings  7 років тому +1

      legalsolutions07 Actually they did. Back in the 1990's Shopsmith converted most of their 50 retail stores to "Woodworking Unlimited" and they expanded their offering to include tools from Delta, Jet and others. During that time they made a miter bar for their miter gauge that fit other tools, but when they dropped that concept they dropped that option. In fact, they sold about half their stores to Woodcraft and the Woodcraft model store that you see today is essentially the WU look and layout. Anyway, the knock-offs I show here at better than most other miter gauges sold, so they would still be an upgrade for most folks. Thanks for watching and commenting. Scott

      I remember those stores and got to be friends with the guys that worked at the Manassas store. I believe the manager there, Mark Whirlin (sp?) started “woodworkers club” in Vienna and bought most of the SS store display racks (and some of the remaining stock). After he franchised about 5 or 6 locations, Woodcraft took note and bought him out, if I heard correctly. It was a great concept and many of the staff at the SS store made the move with him. I used to see some of them even at the Springfield store. I bought most of my SPTs from that Manassas store to help them ‘ clear out stock’….wonderful deal for me.
