  • Never expected this video to blow up the way it did. Honestly it had like 5 views for so long I actually had lost hope of it ever being found then suddenly the views started increasing out of nowhere. If you like this edit, make sure you check out more of my stuff because I have a very distinctive style when it comes to some of my videos. All story centric and are almost like a summary of the movie rather than just a video.

    Strong women tend to reject their match, especially as their perfect match tends to be as strong or stronger than they are, in character and will. Her rejection of Gabriel stemmed from her knowing, deep in her soul, that she would grow to need him-- he would be her ballast and provide her a steadfast and powerful foundation. She did everything to free herself from reaching out for this, as she desired being that for herself. In the end, she only broke down because he was finally going to walk away and despite herself she didn't-- she really couldn't live her life without him in it.
    She wasn't selfish. She was afraid to need him. She was terrified of loving him.
    For good and for ill, I am akin to Bathsheba.

    IN HARDY'S OWN WORDS A THE END: They spoke very little of their mutual feeling; pretty phrases and warm expressions being probably unnecessary between such tried friends. Theirs was that substantial affection which arises (if any arises at all) when the two who are thrown together begin first by knowing the rougher sides of each other's character, and not the best till further on, the romance growing up in the interstices of a mass of hard prosaic reality. This good-fellowship-camaraderie-usually occurring through similarity of pursuits, is unfortunately seldom superadded to love between the sexes, because men and women associate, not in their labours, but in their pleasures merely. Where, however, happy circumstance permits its development, the compounded feeling proves itself to be the only love which is strong as death-that love which many waters cannot quench, nor the floods drown, beside which the passion usually called by the name is evanescent as steam.

    I read the book and thought being the strong headed woman, she was maybe a bit afraid of Oak because she knew with all her being that its him she truly loved...but to truly love is to give up your power which it was not in her nature to do...so she surrenders in the end because she has suffered enough..

In my opinion, I think she didn’t want to be one of those girls to be controlled and she didn’t want to be thrown away “and when your thyme it is past and gone, he’ll care no more for you” but ironically she ended up marrying someone who was using her and she avoided the person who wasn’t.

      @@bluebell8557 Yes also when I read the book, Troy seemed like the first man to make her feel powerless and that is why she fell head over heels with him. I think the case of Gabriel Oak is a tale as old as time, where a man isn't so attractive to a woman at first, but proves how trustworthy and reliable he is, eventually winning her heart. I think that romantic ideas of heart fluttering scenarios where women feel anxious and vulnerable rather than comfortable around a man ( as with Troy) is what really disadvantages sweet and devoted men like Oak.

    While she is super harsh and abrasive towards him I also think this story is realistic in that she grew to love him for more than what he looked like. She tried passion amidst her independence and found that fleeting, then almost chose convenience but she didn’t respect those men, and while they made her feel a certain way , they were shallow. In the end she chooses Gabriel because she grew to see him as more than what he had been. He was real and he respected her beyond her looks or money. He showed her that he loved her not because of shallow things but because he truly believed in her snd valued and respected her strength, he wasn’t afraid of it. I feel like she spent so much of the movie wanting to be something dainty or submissive and settling for what she thought she wanted. In the end she realized what she truly valued in love was the equality and respect that gave gave her. I may be alone I. This but I love the fact that this story is messy because learning to love someone can sometimes be messy.

  • @thorne1239

    Gabriel and Bathsheba have one of the most fascinating relationships in literature. When we first meet Bathsheba, it isn't her good qualities we see, but her vanity as she stares into a mirror when she thinks no one is looking. Then Gabriel comes to know her as whimsical, impetuous and courageous when she saves his life. He sees her faults and spends the entire story appealing to the better parts of her nature. He despises her behavior toward Mr. Boldwyn and warns her against Troy.
    It isn't until she marries Troy and sees what her future looks like with him, that she admits to Gabriel that she married him because Troy played on her insecurities. She's starting to understand that Gabriel expects the best version of her and she's failed him.
    Her behavior toward Mr. Boldwyn is less understandable. She seems weak, stringing him along, trying to convince herself she is some type of martyr because she played a dumb prank on him one time. It isn't explainable other than her vanity is getting the best of her again.
    I don't think as the audience we're supposed to feel that Bathsheba deserves Gabriel's devotion. She probably doesn't even deserve his friendship. But that isn't the point, Gabriel thinks she deserves it and in the end she finally accepts that too.

      yeah, their relationship matures from both sides; she matures also and he gets to know her better with good points and flaws so his commitment at the end is truly a more mature one ( after all you don't ask to marry a woman after just having seen her milking the cow and having spent some time on a lawn, do you?)

    • @jessietorres96

      That's true bc she did like him from the beginning but she wasnt mature enough to be with him yet. However , with that being said I feel like she was manipulative and selfish bc she knew his love was unconditional for her. Sometimes we just have to do what is right ,she knew it all along but she was playing hard to get. Gaining experience is great but look at all the senseless heartache she endured just to end up with the person she knew she loved.

In my opinion these traits are either with you or they aren't. As for Matthias schoenaerts, he always embodies the roles he plays. He's an amazing actor. She had little experience, then the officer arrived and dazzled her with his charms. She made the wrong choice but paid for it. Gabriel (proud, firm and loyal) was always there in the background and she had a second chance to choose better. I like both characters.

    When Gabriel and Bethsheba first meet she is a very young woman who lost her parents in childhood. I think this loss affected her emotional development. Gabriel is attracted to her beauty and free spirit. He is eight years older than her and sees her immaturity. Like an older brother he watches over her telling her things she needs to hear about herself that no one else could because she had no one. At one point he even tells her he will leave her one day because he knows eventually he will. Along their journey the things that he tells her, though she often does not heed his advice, she realize too late her foolishness. In the process she matures letting go of childish ways, realizes what love is and does not want to lose him by telling him her true feelings.

    I came to watch this movie just recently, I love adaptations; they never disappoint! Gabriel -Mr. Oak- is added to the list of real men like Mr. Darcy, Mr. Thornton, Mr. Wentworth, Mr. Knightly ... he is a real gentlman whose love is unwavered and his loyalty and devotion are rare. Now many say that 'Wasn't I your first sweetheart' is the utterance that changed his mind, I think what came after 'weren't you mine' is the key; as he heard her saying these words he realized that he matters to her too that's why he carried on and asked if he can love and marry her. His doubts mirrors Mr. Thornton's in 'North and South' as he kept repeating to his mother that he does not think a woman like 'Margaret' would care for him, and she did the same as Bathsheba carred for Gabriel, but fools as we are, we sometimes take unnecessary long time to figure out our emtions!

    I somehow can't sympathize with the leading actress. Gabriel's love for her is unconditional, while her affection for him seems opportunistic. Even at the end it seems more like she just wants to be with him because she needs his companionship because she's lonely now and his advice because it was always so helpful to her. Not because she really cares about him

    • @bluebell8557
      @bluebell8557  6 років тому +125

      I didn't like her either. I think she got her karma though. Her whole problem or conflict was the fact that she was worried she was going to be used by a man. "for when your thyme it is passed and gone, he'll care no more for you". And that's why I think she refused Oak at first. She thought of herself too independent and not needing a man. Then she really did fall for someone who used her. It's one of the finest ironies in my opinion.

      You're of course entitled to your opinion and I can see how you could think that about it, but I think she finally realized what Gabriel meant to her , and not because she was lonely or needed him to help with the farm either. Sometimes people don't realize what they have until they lose it or are about to lose it.

    • @MathuArt
      @MathuArt 6 років тому +42

      I agree with that point of view. I guess that's the "moral" of the story. But i cannot believe Gabriel means the same to her as she means to him. She does seem to realize his worth at the end yes, but I believe love is more about giving than receiving. If people can't realize what they have until they are about to lose it, they are more concerned about what they can get, which I think is opportunistic. How many times has Gabriel "lost" her to other men? But he never stopped loving her.

    • @carolannhook554
      @carolannhook554 4 роки тому

      As is typical of writing in this genre and time, all of the names have additional meanings. Gabriel Oak is both a saving angel and a steady, reliable force. Boldwood is confident and straightforward, but too old for Bathsheba (thus his name is like bald-wood, or an old tree). Frank Troy is obviously only interested in money, troy being a measurement of weight and wealth. And then there's Bathsheba, the woman named after a Bible character who seduced David, who then conveniently put her husband in harm's way, ensuring that the husband would die and David could marry Bathsheba. I think her name is meant to be ironic, in that she is alluring to several men, but she does not destroy them, though they fight for her.

    • @ayishas4385
      @ayishas4385 4 роки тому +2

      @@carolannhook554 I agree with the meaning of the names, except that Bathsheba didn't do any seducing. 2 Samuel 11: King David saw her bathing from his rooftop, took her and lay with her, and then when she sent to him telling him she was pregnant, David tried to hide his adultery by calling Uriah back from war in hopes that he'd sleep with his own wife and nobody would know it was David's kid, but when Uriah wouldn't go back home, David had her husband murdered.
      Now, there's no evidence of her objecting to the situation, and we can presume from the story that maybe she would have gone along with David and not told her husband, but she's a pretty ambivalent character. A better woman would have refused the king, and, best case scenario, been sent home untouched, or worst case, been raped by the king anyway, but it's not like she set out to seduce anyone. I think that's why Hardy's character is named Bathsheba, in that she was involved with a couple of men, and ended up caught in the middle of things by her own lack of character/weakness/ selfishness, but she didn't set out to do harm. Bathsheba in the Bible suffers the loss of a husband - killed because of her, but not by her design -- and loses the son who resulted from the adultery with David, but she also has a happy ending in that she gives birth to Solomon.

    • @carolannhook554
      @carolannhook554 4 роки тому +1

      @Ayisha S. Good to clarify. Thanks. I was trying to keep the post shorter and couldn't figure out another way without using a word like seduce, but I agree that the word misrepresents her actions. I like your theory on her name. I wonder if the name is to also suggest the idea of the judgement of others (in the madding crowd) who see only her actions and not the delicate complexities of love. Pretty much every love story in the novel is a convoluted, complicated relationship, filled with misunderstandings. I loved the movie, but I feel the portrayal of Troy is simplified too much, making it easier for audiences to hate him rather than see him as a flawed, proud lover.

    • @ayishas4385
      @ayishas4385 4 роки тому +1

      @@carolannhook554 Yeah, I like your assessment about the complexity of her actions. Have you seen the longer miniseries from the 90s? Nathaniel Parker, Jonathan Firth, and Paloma Baeza? I thought it was a really excellent adaptation, and long enough to deal with the complexity. Troy's character makes more sense: he's weak, but complex, and the situation he got into with Fanny has more backstory. I also think that Bathsheba is more likable -- one understands and respects her decisions more. Nathaniel Parker isn't as handsome as Mattias Schoenaerts, but his rural accent makes more sense, and even though he wasn't how I pictured Oak in the book, he does a good job. Anyway, any time you try to squeeze a novel into a blockbuster-length film, you're going to miss a lot. Not only is it short, but it has a very strict and limited structure that does not allow for subplots. The miniseries structure works a lot better, and is my favourite film structure.

      Far from the madding crowd is Thomas Hardy's brightest book. So you needn't be scared of reading it. It's a really really lovely book.

      Try "The mayor of Casterbridge" or the movie adaptation of this with Ciaran Hinds. Absolutely wonderful.

      This was near the beginning of his writing career I think, he wasn't so obsessed with consequence then

    This might be my favorite Thomas Hardy novel. I enjoyed this adaptation. The cast was outstanding and the scenery was stunning. I for myself identify with William Boldwood.

    Matthias Schoenaerts is amazing in this film. He can speak and express volumes with a look and words aren’t necessary. Carey Mulligan is outstanding and together they are magical.

      What's great is having seen it and learned that she wanted him to play the role after seeing his Rust & Bone performance. He's the Real Thing.

    Thomas Hardy wrote two incredible novels (he wrote many others) that were put to film, Tess of the d'Ubervilles and Far From the Madding Crowd. I love this version of Far from the Madding Crowd and both versions of Tess.

    understand the times: women needed a man to provide for them and all the pressure was on them to marry money, forget love, and that's the sense of the story: love overcoming necessity.

    All Hardy’s books are like this, heroines in novels can be so frustrating, but I think in many ways this reflects life for so many women and indeed men, always looking for someone or something better and ignoring the perfect choice because it is right in front of them, it seems too easy so is rejected.
