So sorry he isn't coming back. They were perfect as a team and could have come up with a super good story line for their relationship. It won't be the same without William.
My mother stumbled across Ms Scarlet and the Duke one afternoon and then told me about it. Ever since then we both have been diehard fans of this wonderful detective series! Watching season 4 and waiting for the next episode along with hoping the series continues. The storyline of a woman in that era making a living in the world and trying to be accepted by thy fellow man. Eliza and William being attracted to each other but not being able to give in to their feelings is what keeps the audience tuned in to see if they will commit. Love the show there’s so many other shows that are either fake reality or full of violence this show lets you enjoy the mystery Eliza is set out to solve, and a quaint love story with the Duke wrapped in the mix. Please continue this show it takes you away from the world we live in today even if it’s for only an hour!!!
Once The Duke left, I was not interested in the show. I love Eliza, and the other characters, but the show loses it's depth & charm without William Wellington, the Duke.
@@eme.261 He finished filming Rebel Moon (both parts) two months before they started shooting season 4. So that's not why he was missing. The writers/creators etc did not address his absence for a reason. They are hiding something.
The producers should bring him back later in the series for a one-off they should get married and then end the series. Just my opinion! Also he should definitely be the next James Bond.
Stuart Martin and the producers did announce that he has left the show and S4 is his last. Moving forward the series will be called Miss Scarlet. I was disappointed because I love their dynamic and chemistry in the show.
Eliza and William are perfect for each other.I believe he has given both of them time to work through the very real issues of the time. I hope that they can find a workable solution so that they can be together.
I’m more than concerned about their being separated. The young actors playing Eliza and William, are BRILLIANT! Loved seeing a glimpse into their younger selves.
Thank you for putting this video together! It's very well done. One of the things that stands out most during this season, more so than in previous seasons, is the deep love they both feel for one another and how it has grown the more time they've spent together. He's more willing to express it than she is, and he clearly wants to have a family. She's not ready for that and THAT is just one of the reasons he chose to leave. He's also very frustrated with how Scotland Yard is being run. Taking the secondment in NYC might serve two purposes: a) allow him to bring back and introduce to SY new policies, after which he may earn a promotion, and b) allow Eliza time to think about what she wants for her future. While Eliza hasn't told him that she loves him, we see it in nearly every scene they had together in this season, especially after his near death experience. The writers also wanted us to see that he has legitimate concerns about her safety, which he has because he loves her, not because he wants to control her or because he's a chauvinist. I disagree with those who say he just wants her to quit to become a housewife. I think it's more complicated than that. Since this show is set in the 19th century and not the 21st I think the writers will do our ancestors and women like Eliza a disservice if their "happy ever after" is one which they simply get married, open a detective agency together, and then go on their merry way.
You wrote exactly what I wanted to say. I subscribe under every your word and sentence. I don’t agree with thoughts that William wants to control her. It’s absolutely natural for him to want to have a family with her because he loves her. The fact that he gives Eliza time and space to realize what she wants confirmed the opposite - that he respects her and loves fully.
@@natlove7768 Thank you very much for your comment! I agree with every word and I'm so happy to find that I'm not alone. I'm baffled by how some fans believe that he's trying to control her.
@@amritawhitman8112 thank you for your comment too! 😊 Actually I don’t understand where do these thoughts that William wants just to control Eliza come. Nowadays for some reason if a man wants to have family with the person he loves it’s considered to be a control or “Victorian style.” I understand that time there were issues, etc. but why everything related to the wish to have a family is considered to be as a control from the man’s side? Eliza is an independent woman but at some points we can see that at the depth the idea of a family and relationship is very sweet and desirable for her but only with the person who she loves and it is William. Yes, she denies in the beginning when William teases her if she is going to have her family one day but in fact she blushes all the time and we can clearly see this. She is just too proud to admit (and also not ready for this) that she wants it - with William. There are several episodes that prove that she can fit to this family life in future: when she compared her and William with a “married couple” while boiling eggs, when she made a cake for him and an embroidery for him; she initiated talk about “future” with him, especially in the season 2 (but failed). She was keeping him home and cared about him. And plenty of other situations. The family life is not far for Eliza and many moments prove that one day she can do it - with the person she loves. And she doesn’t lose her independence and it doesn’t make her silly or old-fashioned or naive. It’s just about being herself but with the person who she loves. When William and Eliza are together at home they already interact like an old-married couple and represent some kids of their perfect “not perfect “ family model. Now Eliza just needs time to realize what exactly she wants and William gives this space for her.
Totally agree w you. I enjoyed S4 as much as S1. After watching S4, I went back and re-watched all seasons. Now, I can appreciate S2 &S3 much more. I see why the writers decided not to move forward w their feelings in S2. At the time they were focused on different things and a lot need to be sorted out bc they get together. I think William leaving in E4 is the real wake up call for Eliza and this separation has to happen for E to start realizing how important W is in her life. If W does not leave, E would not make a step forward in their relationship. Like at the end of S2, I assume, E was about to tell W abt her feelings but when she found out William would not go to Glasgow, she pulled back. Eliza was kind of taking William for granted to always be by her side. In S3, William thought he wanted and found the "Victorian" woman who will wait for him w a dinner and a drink at the end of the day, but she was not who he really wanted. So I don't think William is machoistic or trying to control women. He just wants to keep Eliza safe as he promised her father and in his mind in order to do that he needs her to be a housewife. Not only we saw in S4 that W has learned to trust Eliza to be able to stand on her own but also we saw how his encouragement effected her determination and positive attitude to reopen her dad's office. Both of them need the distance and space between them so they can figure out what they want and how they feel being with or without the other. They need to find out for themselves if they are willing to compromise in order to share a life together. For sure, I feel the dynamic bw E&W has changed this season. They don't bicker and don't get under each other skin as much compare to the previous season. BTW, I love how Ivy has become a "mediator" for E&W. Hopefully, we get a S5 and there won't be a set back in their relationship, like the previous seasons.
@@natlove7768 Wellll.....it's complicated! In a way he has put both of them in a difficult situation, however I don't believe he did it in an effort to control her. As we know they've been dancing around their obvious attraction to one another for a few years. When she said "I don't understand" and he quickly said "Yes, you do" I got the impression that they've come close to talking about whether or not they can have a future together, but not so directly. This is uncharted territory for a Victorian couple. If they're married while he's still with SY, how is he supposed to contract her for work as he's been doing? We'll see what happens! Hopefully Season 5 will be approved soon!
While this story twist is frustrating I can understand William's decision to go to NY for a year. I do not think he is running away but wisely giving them the space they need at this time. He knows what he wants. He wants Eliza but there are comications. I do not think Eliza is as clear as he is about her true feelings and needs. Putting space between them will give her time to sort through her feelings and desires. Who knows perhaps William's stay in America will fill him with an enterprising spirit. Perhaps he will suggest going into the private detective business with Eliza. They have worked well together solving cases and William being a man and formerly with Scotland Yard would be able to bring some much needed clients to the agency. Or perhaps he will start a seperate enterprise on his own. I think he is willing to make some changes in his life at this time. I also think he loves, respects and admires Eliza and while he finds her frustrating at times I really do not think he would want to hold her back. He often tells her what a good detective she is and even encourages her. Right now I think it is Eliza who needs to do some real soul searching and I am optimistic enough to think that they will work things out and they will be together. I am 75 years old and just hope they do it before I die! I am sure there will be a series 5 and all will be well. I am just impatient to see them together ASAP - like most viewers, I suspect.
Agree w everything you wrote. It's a very slow burn bw E&W as both are so determined in their own ways. 4 years and we haven't gotten much. I'm also optimistic for S5.
Arabella’s words to William re: Eliza are both truthful and disturbing because I SO want William and Eliza to, well, become One. William is being shrewd, wise and prudent via going away to New York for a year, which gives Eliza time and space to get her ducks in a row and really MISS William. The old cliche, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” I do not foresee Eliza ever becoming a haus frau … cooking, cleaning, etc. Not even sure motherhood is in the cards for her. I personally don’t see how she can resist William, but she’s had a less than usual childhood. Enjoying Season 4 tremendously, but here’s to Season 5 when at long last these two gorgeous people unite and revel in immense happiness and joy together.
@@eme.261. The plots are not all that interesting. Their relationship, their banter, the sexual tension between them is the most compelling. The supporting characters’ relationships to Eliza are well written and acted.
@@CarolMcGinnis-fz5pn -- Eliza and William's relationship is compelling. I can agree on that. Yet, the show isn't just their relationship. It's Eliza's struggle to achieve her life goals, whatever those are. I'm interested in how she achieves those goals, professional and personal.
@@eme.261 It's the writers teasing us with 4 seasons (which yes, comared to Sanditon is a long way to go) to then essentially change the premise of the entire show. They spent alot of time building up her character while we have a very underdeveloped Duke, which is a grave misstep bc he wasn't just her romantic interest he was also the second lead. This screams incompetence. It wouldn't even matter if they didn't end up together but to pivot 360 and introduce another actor as the replacement means they're counting on that great big love story. I'd rather they just focus on her achievements as a detective than introduce someone else bc then atleast she holds up her end of the bargain about prioritizing her career over all else. Pretending William and all that history doesn't exist is such a copout and it's fair for viewers to want to pull out.
The actor is only leaving for a season? I hadn’t heard that. Only that the actor felt the character’s arch had reached his proper conclusion to his story.
I like this show, maybe not at much as I once did. It definitely sings the feminist anthem. And while I love strong women and good female characters, I find myself siding with William more often. He is a unique man in these times, which few give him credit for. How many men in that time would have supported a woman making a career for herself. What makes me sad for him is how often she puts her self interest ahead of their friendship. She undermines him while constantly needing validation that she really seldom returns. She uses him to further her own agenda too often for me. People jump on the genders a lot, saying his male ego. But take away his male gender, make them both male or both female. Then play out the things she does to him and tell me that you would consider her to be a good friend. I support women having careers as much as I support women who want to be wives and mothers. Why should William give up his desire to have a family. He's an orphan, for him the desire to have a family means something more. They are both unique people in their time, the writer needs to find a way for them to make it work in a unique way. Although the reality is that trailblazers like them didn't generally have easy times.
I loved the kiss but sad Duke had to go away for a year. I guess that's the best option. I hope season 5 will have more romance between Eliza and the duke. ❤
The fact that he does not even show up in the last few episodes tells me that Stuart Martin probably had conflicting work assignments and the writers had to find a way to work around that. Just my opinion. I didn't even watch the last few episodes once I realized that he would be missing. The show is called Miss Scarlet AND the Duke. BTW, the young man who played the young Duke was remarkable in voice and manner. He totally nailed him.
After checking Stuart's IMDB list of recent projects, I'm guessing they had to work around his schedule too. While I understand why you didn't watch the last two episodes, I highly recommend that you do watch them because there are many important scenes in each of the two episodes that include insights into what's going on with Eliza and how she is responding to his absence.
I was about to do the same thing as you, skip the last 2 epi. But, I changed my mind after E4. Glad I did. While SM was not in the 2 episodes, his presence is felt thru the conversations bw the other characters. Of course, I missed seeing him on the screen, but somehow it worked for me. I loved the last 2 epi. and they gave me hope for S5.
@@Ciel.L. 💯 As much as I missed him for those two episodes, I think they made it work for the story. We knew we weren't going to see him which allows us to totally focus on Eliza and what's going on for her since he left. They gave me hope for Season 5 too!
I found a movie he made, and I think its the one he ditched MSATD for. Rebel Moon: Child of Fire. Only for MSATD fans would I have put up with such DRECK. I read the trailer, and it sounded great as I love scifi. BUT..........I watched a few YT vids on how it was received and the reviews were......soooo bad. Nevertheless I persevered as I wanted to see where SM was in this flick. SM fans will be very disappointed to hear this part that HE DITCHED MSATD FOR had about two lines and was not 3 minutes on screen. He contributed absolutely nothing to the plot, and was never mentioned again in the entire movie. His character was absolutely irrelevant. Maybe his part is on the cutting room floor? I expected him to have gotten a better part or at least more important to the plot. I didn't recognize any of the other actors other than Sir Anthony Hopkins voice!! I said this elsewhere and I'll say it again; HE NEEDS A BETTER AGENT.
Eliza must decide what is the most important thing in her life...her career or Wm. He has decided it is Eliza and, thus, the secondment. But Eliza hasn't reached that point, much like Scarlet O'Hara. She is spreading her wings w both William's and Patrick's help. But in the end, ultimately, she will come to the realization that her detective success is not as key to her happiness as is her relationship w and love for William. With Ivy's wisdom, Eliza will finally have that recognition/ acknowledgment that happiness w Wm is the most important thing in her life, including having children. But this dawning will take time. As for Arabella's prediction, she is half wrong- Eliza will finally take William over her detective aspirations. And recall that Arabella is a manipulator and schemer seeking affirnation of her own worth based on the lack of it by her father and her late husband. Duke clearly did not see that in her, only as someone who paid attention to him, could cook, socialize, was pretty and wanted a family. He was an attractive, socially acceptable man, and fell for her womanly wiles. But he truly loves Eliza and is more and more understanding her drive and needs and is willing to risk losing her by going to NYC for a yr to give her the time to figure out what truly matters and to figure out how she can, as he said in an earlier conversation, figure it out as she always has. And she will but not w.o. trials and tribulations and William's, Ivy's, her ghost father's patience and their understanding and encouragement to do as she always has...be forthright and do the right thing. There is such electric attraction between the 2 that it would be a shame for them not to end up together.
I found that I did not care for Eliza after the episode about her and William's youth. I would like to leave Eliza behind and follow William to New York to see what the future has in store for him.
I really am in love with their chemistry i just wish the kiss was more passionate and eager since we had this very slow burn kinda of tense relationship and we have waited A LOT AND I MEAN A LOT for this but hopefully we can get it in season 5 i hope 😼😼
This 💯 we have waited for spark. A flame. Eliza could match his energy and stood there ans took a chaste kiss. After so much between them wouldn't she have been overcome? Touch his chest? His hair. Something. Something more fire.
@@G3rOnEHmO i mean lets just hope we’ll get something special in season 5 since william had left maybe it would leave eliza eager to see him again maybe thats what they’re planning for😂😂😂
I think alot of people are forgetting the nuances in this show. It has been repeatedly hinted William wants kids and Eliza's lifestyle isn't conducive to raising children. Atleast, not back then. I don't think he particularly has a problem with her job, it's her job undermining his that's affecting his male ego, esp with all the politics at Scotland Yard. Still, he keeps on reaffirming she's a good detective despite Arabella sowing seeds of doubt in his mind. He keeps writing letters to her bc he's acutely aware of how she thinks and despite the distance he doesn't want them to grow distant. He's still making an effort to patch up. He's not running away rather he's giving her time to decide. This trope has been used time and time again for couples from Kate and Sawyer to Bellamy and Clarke.... sometimes it's difficult to appreciate what we truly want unless we've had time to truly reflect away from it. Victorian women weren't as soft as sometimes portrayed onscreen, there were female wrestlers to prolific serial killers all active in that period. I'm sure the writers and creators are most aware of the historical backdrop. I have faith they will have the characters reach a solution that compromises neither character's integrity.
Actually this has made me quite sad watching this. I really hope there’s a way they can both compromise yet maintain their principles. I know there were couples who made this work, even in Victorian times. I don’t want to see Eliza have to submit but nor do I want to see William do this. I’m probably just being naive but I just want them to be together & happy. ❤
they can do it, William doesn't seem happy working for Scotland Yard, but things would change if he decided to work with Eliza, can you imagine the title of the show being their office sign?
@@Liviahel Love this idea! Thank you for cheering me up. ☺️ I think I’m just worried bc I can see (if the writers aren’t careful) it going down a ‘Moonlighting’ route which would just be awful! Fingers crossed they follow your idea
@@CareelBay I think the writers are being little too slow on their relationship development, and with Nash having more screen time alongside Eliza people were starting to ship them, though, she is not working with him anymore so I guess we're safe from this love triangle path.
@@CareelBay besides, William only considered becoming a detective because of Eliza's influence and he felt bad that he got to live her dream when it wasn't even something he considered before meeting her. I guess his job got meaningless when Eliza was ghosting him, so maybe going to New York will give him perspective, he will eventually understand that he doesn't want a victorian wife and won't expect that from Eliza.
@@Liviahel Oh I certainly hope so! 🥹🙏. I agree about the writers being too slow. I know it’s a fine balance but they know what fans want & dragging it out this length when William isn’t actually there is not great.
From what I read the actor wanted to pursue other acting opportunities and felt that the Duke’s story had reached its conclusion (which is a pet peeve of mine when actors leave a show before the story ends as it should).
@@susankarns2359 Wouldn't hold my breath. They kept his exist vague to lead viewers on (again!) They introduced a new inspector as her new potential love interest so they probably wouldn't ask him back anyway... Such a waste...
@@jenniferjohnson6385 That's incorrect. There's no evidence that he left to pursue other projects. Technically he could have filmed season 5. There was something else going on behind the scenes, creative differences... and I mainly blame the writers (there's reason for this) The whole "Duke's story had reached its conclusion" is BS to avoid backlash (which didn't help, cause the backlash happened anyway)
Let's backtrack some, The Duke Wellington, aka William, was going to leave once before to take another job after being forced out of his office by the (cant recall his name) arrogant inspector and remember Eliza was a little upset and was going to tell him her feelings. But before words were expressed, he told her he'd changed his mine and was reinstated. She immediately didn’t tell him her true feelings walking away as he asked her, "What were you going to tell me?" Eliza's jealousy over Arabella was very evident as to her feedings. Even if she didn’t tell William and secretly wished he'll express his feelings for her, she still didn't want him to be with another woman. You see, Arabella shook up the usual monotony of things between them. Thus thrusting William and Eliza into each others company every day per their working together. It also showed William how much he cared for her, and Arabella expressed as much. Now we see William gets hurt, and her feelings of losing him resurfaces, and she does realize how much she does truly do love him. Eliza just doesn't have the nerves to express that to him without giving up a part of herself. William reflects on life after a near death experience, a life in his future, and he wants her to be in it. Marriage and children, and yet he doesn't want Eliza to give up what she sees herself being, which is a very well-known and respected woman Private Investigator! William says, "I Love You," I think we're all speechless because, for once, Eliza has nothing to say. She's quietly thinking, "What do I say?" We all know she's not going to say what's in her heart, so they exchange words, then kiss💋not the fireworks we all were hoping, but a kiss none the less. Williams going away will bring reflection on both their parts. She'll continue to work with Nash. I see power struggles, but not love between these two. I guess time will tell unless the producers throw Nash and Eliza together, and word gets out to William, and that year, sabbatical is shortened, and he and Eliza do come together as suspected 😍
I love this compilation. Duke doesn’t want a typical Victorian woman which is why he loves Eliza. They are good for each other. He is doing the right thing to give each other space. Eliza is a bit short sighted in not seeing that he is supportive of her in spite of some of the things he says because he usually gives in to her. They can work it out because he is the one willing to change a bit for her, she could compromise a bit too. Nash is not the one for her, there’s no chemistry between them.
There have been a lot of really insightful comments here, and while I still ship these two, I struggle to figure out how they may come back together without the show completely jumping the shark. And I’m a romance novelist! They have the same conflicts-he loves her, knows he can’t change her but has his own expectations of a partner in this period. She doesn’t want to fit into those expectations despite loving him. They really are at an impasse. At the end of the season I was thinking about Victoria Thompson “Gaslight Mystery” book series, and how Eliza and William could transplant to NYC…
@@densixreylo4ever mine too! but I wouldnt have said NYC was any more understanding or accepting of a woman in a different role. I have this horrible sense that she will come to a resolution, but it will be too late and William will have moved on.
Ooh, maybe I can get your insight into this, as a romance writer: As far as I can tell, this show seems to be more about what's keeping E&W from being together than WHY they're in love with each other/WHAT exactly they like/love about each other in the first place. Even "Origins" didn't go into that, it was teasing, banter, teenage attraction, but nothing deeper, really. So in your opinion, why do you think E&W love each other/what do they uniquely do for each other as characters and people?
@@freshPrincess626 Wow, what an interesting question! I think that you could break down their conflict into internal and external, pretty easily. Externally they are at odds professionally, i.e. why he left for NY in S4. They can't be together and co-exist in the work realm. Internally, they can't reconcile their expectations for the future and what they want out of a partner (in theory). The creators have done a pretty good job of laying the groundwork for all of this in a way that is logical and seemingly insurmountable. She thinks she has to give up her identity in order to be with him. He thinks he has to give up on his desire for a traditional wife/family in order to be with her. Both of them are unwilling to sacrifice at this point, and they can't see a middle ground (largely because of societal mores of the time). However, it's been shown that they are rare in understanding each other. His relationship with Arabella showed him that he can't put aside his feelings for Eliza, regardless of what he thinks he should want in life. Frankly, Arabella would bore him in the long run. And despite Patrick Nash basically saying to Eliza "I'll take you the way you are" she still seeks William's approval (perhaps in place of her father's, which is problematic on its own merit). When William says "You have put me in an impossible situation" in S4E4, he's right. But it's disingenuous to put all the blame on Eliza. However, she seems to be more intransigent than he is, which is why he decided to put some distance between them. I feel like he's been more willing to bend than she has. At least he's willing to talk about it, which freaks her out. I guess we will see what happens in S5. I personally feel like the only way they can manage to be together is either for him to leave the Met and join forces with her, or for her to find a way to be more professionally independent of him. It's tricky, especially if they're trying to keep some element of historical accuracy.
I think if she moves to NYC with William America will give her a little bit more flexibility as a working woman and take her more seriously , however the distance will help them sort things out but I feel with her stubborn nature she is going to lose him. It cannot always be her way or the highway there has to be some compromise if she truly loves him. He is willing to compromise for her. Honestly, I don’t see them working out. She is too stubborn doesn’t want to compromise for their love.
An intelligent educated American woman would suit him very well. If she has an independent income, she can hire household help and have children with him. Plenty of American women of the time were able to accomplish this and have their husbands as friends as well as lovers. I can imagine them living in San Francisco.
William's near-death made him realize life can end any day and a death-bed helps one see sharing life with a loved one is what will be missed at life's end if such a relationship is passed over when the opportunity comes because it would put obstacles in the way of that which is thought to be most important, one's career. His love declaration makes sense, as does his moving to NYC since the idea is that the physical distance is what he needs. Eliza seems to have disregarded any real remembrance of the time spent beside his hospital bed, and she seems not to have any concept of the brevity of life. Once her housekeeper dies or marries then Eliza will HAVE to learn to cook for herself and will likely spend her remaining days alone. Sad.
I totally agree! Have you read the Veronica Speedwell series? It reminds me a bit of this show. But Veronica actually taught herself how to cook and clean because she wants to be independent and be able to take care of herself. Eliza says she wants to be independent but can't even take care of herself if it wasn't for Ivy. I wish Eliza was more like Veronica.
I enjoy this show, but sense that William is more emotionally self aware than Eliza. She's put so much energy into being a detective, she hasn't matured emotionally. Don't see her as wife, mother, but hoping they can work out relationship for themselves that works. Do miss William. Without that chemistry, the show is lacking the reason t o watch it. See no mention of Season 5....audience cannot hold sense of anticipation forever. I want to see Eliza's reaction to his declaration, either in her letters to him, or her conversation with Ivy. Anne H
I think that the fact is William and Eliza both have deep affection for one another but its their insecurities keeping them apartment. They work best as a team and rather than the team sitting down and analyzing needs from wants they stew alone. During this time yes it was highly encouraged to find a husband, raise a brood and enjoy ladies activities. But there are realities people don't recognize during these times. Women of lower classes worked and raised children. Women of upper classes had society pursuits so nannies raised their children until they went off to whatever boarding or day school they got into. William and Eliza can have a careers and children the same way most have: with support and communication.
I am so ANGRY that Stuart Martin has made the decision to NOT return to the show😡 What an absolute show of disregard of the thousands of fans who have supported this show! I am not one bit impressed.SHAME ON HIM!!
Hi, all Williza fans feel the not because of him abandoning his fans. He was as much of the Duke fan and I would say even more than us. He loves being Duke. The writers failed him. They never had the intention to give us what they dangled in front of us for 4 years, a happy ending love story bw E&W. SM knew what fans wanted but realized that would never happen so he has no choice but to leave as he no longer want to string fans along w lies. As his gift to the fans he asked the creator to allow E&W to come together for one kiss bf he leaves. Fans have been waiting and wanted it for 4 years. The kiss was beautiful but tragic at the same time as we now know that Duke won't return. I know the news hurts and I'm sorry. SM did the best he could for us fans but in the end the writers hold the pen. 😢
I love them together - love is sacrificial on both ends - i think her character is less sacrificial than his ... she needs to mature and grow ... he is .... she is stuck ...
I felt this way as well. Her character development has been lacking. I want to see more of vulnerable Eliza, and I know she's capable of it from her childhood flashbacks with her father. I think "girl boss" has kind of become her armor. I would love to see more of a balance of Eliza in season 5.
She grew up sacrificing her entire sense of self/identity in order to comply with societal standards for women…it makes perfect sense why she’s now so resistant to give up any agency or control to someone else. She finally achieved her dream career against all odds, of course she’s scared to risk it…
@@gina5323This is likely a lot of the reason for it, but I wish the writing itself would GO INTO that more. But as it is, there's very little insight into Eliza's internality.
@gina. She wonders if it was worth it. Sometimes when you get what you wished for, there’s disappointment. It doesn’t always measure up. I’d not mind at all if they decided it would be easier to be together elsewhere.
Their relationship reminds me very much the one from Bones between Booth and Temperance. Even him getting shot and then leaving for the army; in this case going to NY.
I know!! Spoiler alert............ WTF happened to the infamous slap!?? They spent HOW LONG telling us about the death of her dog Skip, and the kiss etc and in this clip its like they weren't reading their own show bible!!!
I like season 4 but it's going to be a disappointment going forward and I actually believe you are correct that season 5 will be the last because it looks like the continuity is off
I'm disappointed because he won't be in season 5. it's the second period and suspense series I've watched and the couple doesn't get together. I don't believe that Ms Scarlet and the Duke will be like The Alienist... I hope that in season 5 the distance will make Eliza reevaluate her feelings for Willian and he will come back in season 6.
He wants a Victorian wife. Eliza's whit, her passion, her drive are the stand out attributes that made her stand out and made him fall in love but he still wants her to change into submission. If she'll change he will lose attraction and she'll lose herself and come to despise her life.
He is right to leave, there is no further development with the Duke character. Therefore, dear authors, put some twist into the story, this is the dead end!
The writers should at least let these characters get married, before letting him leave the show. Well, if he really wants to leave the show, then they can't stop him, but he should think it over twice, because the "world of entertainment," is Funny, good roles like "the Duke," don't fall out of trees, everyday. Or, maybe the show' produces could cast a new Actor, for this wonderful role as the "Duke,"--- that is what soap operas, and other shows used to do in the 1980s,90s,and early 2000s, and some shows Still do that today. Just Replacing the Actor who wants to leave the show, instead of Killing, or Writing out a wonderful role, that is an important part of the show. The Role, is important to the show, Not individual actor who is playing that role, so television shows, have in the past, and Can always Replace an Actor, to keep an important character, in a great television show.
Spoiler.................. I'm irritated because they dont follow their own show bible. All that nonsense about the death of the dog Skip, and the kiss and the slap etc etc and we seen none of it. Its like its being written by different sets of writers with a show runner who forgets to check show details. WTF???
Season 4 was a disappointment. Eliza and William had more interaction in previous seasons than this one. Clearly Eliza is never going to be with William, so William might as well move on. New York is a great opportunity for this to happen. Obvious, Eliza wants to stay single. So season 4 has been very boring.
He left for him but not "to make her change." It hurts too much to be that near to her knowing, or at least feeling, she doesn't love him the same. It's not a pride or egotistical thing that made him leave. It's him protecting HIS heart for once. He tried moving on with Arabella, but he couldn't. Distance is what he needs, while Eliza needs to both realize and admit how much she loves and needs him, something she'll never do as long a she can convienently use him for selfish reasons.
I really loved the development of Nash. I actually thought Eliza and Nash were better suited to each other than Eliza and William. William really wants a traditional.woman but Nash appreciates Eliza for who she is and would not stop her from the work she loves. It was a fun episode but they need to bring Nash back.
So mature of the duke to run away from his problems like he always does. He needs to change, not Eliza. I used to ship them but now I understand he's jealous of her and went away to force her hand to become a Victorian wife.
I just do not think he understands that she needs some agency over her life. He does run away, and that was not a terribly tender kiss. I also do not like that fault was discussed in their conversation as to who is the problem here
I strongly believe that Eliza and Patrick Nash are à much better match as Patrick doesn't want Eliza to change. I always hoped that both Eliza and William would become a true couple, but William wants a true Victorian wife. When I watch Eliza with William Eliza, he seems scared to admit her feelings for William to herself or to William from the beginning of their relationship. Eliza used and lied William and did not respect William. When I watch Eliza with Patrick its the opposite due to the fact they are so alike. Patrick Nash doesn't want to change Eliza only to make her a better business woman. This is the Guilded Age in America especially in New York William will find a good woman in America its not just Eliza thought.its also Williams. Patrick Nash is a much better match they are full of fun love and passion and fun because he accepts her as she is Patrick is willing to change his expectations to be with Eliza.
There is a lot more passion between Eliza and Patrick Nash than with Eliza and William. Watch all of season 4 especially the last three episodes. @imisstoronto3121
Who are supporting Nash and Eliza and saying that william is trying to change Eliza he is jealousy of her and Nash is not trying to change her.. to those who are pointing william point to Eliza and tell her to make decision william is too good he was not ran away he given time to both .. In reality relationship between two persons depends on their scarfices and their changes for each other.. if she or he is worth for change that's called Love
@@pushparaj1530there is a huge difference in changing and giving up your dreams. Would you still love the person who changed that much bc obviously for he/she wouldn’t be the same person you fell in love with anymore.
I agree. There are only 6 episodes in the whole season, and for him to not be in half of them is a very poor decision that was made.
@@President47394 -- Stuart Martin likely left mid-season to film Rebel Moon.

This was the smile I needed ❤️ ...thank you for sharing.
Such a good show. My wife and I never fail to miss an episode when they air. Looking forward to next season!
Stuart Martin and the producers did announce that he has left the show and S4 is his last. Moving forward the series will be called Miss Scarlet. I was disappointed because I love their dynamic and chemistry in the show.
I think they are going to loose viewers because of this

❤BRAVO❤
Remember the title is Miss Scarlett AND the Duke. DO NOT banish him to New York! They must work out their relationship.
I’m more than concerned about their being separated. The young actors playing Eliza and William, are BRILLIANT! Loved seeing a glimpse into their younger selves.
@@maryednarahuba9554exactly 🥺
Nope he has left and the show has gone down the pan
I hate that the Duke won’t be back!
I am also 75. I have had a sudden change in health this month. I, too, wonder if I will see things play out in this series as well as others.
@@maggiegarber246 Praying for you for better health.
Yes. Agree. I just hope the Duke does come back from America and they do get together.
@@siobhonc Unfortunately he won't...
I can’t stand that we will never see these 2 together again. This show is ruined now for me. I loved them together. 😢
They have true love between them. They have great electricity going on. They are my favorite love couple to date. I cannot wait to see where they go.
If Stuart Martin leaves the show so do I.
I would lose interest rapidly if he leaves.
Female empowerment at its best, eh? Without the male interest, Eliza's nothing? How far we've come as women.

@@donnamaynard4318same here. It should’ve been longer and deeper. I needed to see the yearning on Eliza’s face to make him stay….very disappointing
The actor is only leaving for a season? I hadn’t heard that. Only that the actor felt the character’s arch had reached his proper conclusion to his story.
Me too!
What a legend. Thanks for this !
THIS!
I agree with your comments 100%.
I actually agree
Thank you! This is exactly what I was waiting for and was checking UA-cam every day! 😊
I loved the kiss but sad Duke had to go away for a year. I guess that's the best option. I hope season 5 will have more romance between Eliza and the duke. ❤
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! Well done.
Maybe his part is on the cutting room floor? I expected him to have gotten a better part or at least more important to the plot. I didn't recognize any of the other actors other than Sir Anthony Hopkins voice!! I said this elsewhere and I'll say it again;
HE NEEDS A BETTER AGENT.
It wasn't scheduling conflicts.
I love this show!! Watch from beginning when the new season is uploaded and binge the new episodes.
Then watch sporadically until the new season. 😊
Come on Eliza show some compassion he loves you both belong together.
OH NO! they have GOT to get together

@@jenniferjohnson6385 That's incorrect. There's no evidence that he left to pursue other projects. Technically he could have filmed season 5. There was something else going on behind the scenes, creative differences... and I mainly blame the writers (there's reason for this) The whole "Duke's story had reached its conclusion" is BS to avoid backlash (which didn't help, cause the backlash happened anyway)
I won’t bother watching season 5 then. I’m angry 😡. Waiting for him to come back
We need a season 5 please!!!!
She immediately didn’t tell him her true feelings walking away as he asked her, "What were you going to tell me?"
Eliza's jealousy over Arabella was very evident as to her feedings.
THERE IS NO MISS SCARLET AND THE DUKE WITHOUT THE DUKE... THE SERIAL WAS FANTASTIC, EXCELLENT, ETC, ETC, I MISS IT. ALL THE ACTORS WERE SO WELL,...
It is sad there so few episodes per season 😢

I love this compilation. Duke doesn’t want a typical Victorian woman which is why he loves Eliza. They are good for each other. He is doing the right thing to give each other space. Eliza is a bit short sighted in not seeing that he is supportive of her in spite of some of the things he says because he usually gives in to her. They can work it out because he is the one willing to change a bit for her, she could compromise a bit too. Nash is not the one for her, there’s no chemistry between them.
And now he won’t be in season 5 so I probably won’t be watching.
The dynamic between he and Eliza is electric.
Won’t be the same show without him.
Your last line is my husband's theory!

Without the Duke the program is boring. Will not wat h if he stays gone.
I am letting go enough already.
William needs to become a PI and the two of them partner up. Problem solved.
Exactly what I was thinking!
Such a great episode. They need to work it out. I loved the backstory. ❤😊
I enjoy this show, but sense that William is more emotionally self aware than Eliza. She's put so much energy into being a detective, she hasn't matured emotionally.
Don't see her as wife, mother, but hoping they can work out relationship for themselves that works. Do miss William.
Without that chemistry, the show is lacking the reason t
o watch it. See no mention of Season 5....audience cannot hold sense of anticipation forever. I want to see Eliza's reaction to his declaration, either in her letters to him, or her conversation with Ivy.

Please the Duke needs to be back in season 6.
Bring the Duke back and put them together.
William hates the police hypocrisy , so why not join Nash and Eliza in a private venture ?
That’s an idea but Nash and William are two alphas!
I just want their letters published!
the kiss
Come on eliza the man loves you write to him and go to new york you know you love him ❤
I love them together - love is sacrificial on both ends - i think her character is less sacrificial than his ... she needs to mature and grow ... he is .... she is stuck ...
Not interested in watching without the Duke
The point, my dear Watson, is the Duke!!!
I love them and the setting but the writing on this show is driving me crazy 😒
I know!! Spoiler alert............
WTF happened to the infamous slap!?? They spent HOW LONG telling us about the death of her dog Skip, and the kiss etc and in this clip its like they weren't reading their own show bible!!!
@@imisstoronto3121In a new interview with the showrunners (Masterpiece Studio podcast) they explain the "changes" in that scene.
Finally
He wants a Victorian wife. Eliza's whit, her passion, her drive are the stand out attributes that made her stand out and made him fall in love but he still wants her to change into submission. If she'll change he will lose attraction and she'll lose herself and come to despise her life.
Perhaps but now she sees what life could be like without him and she's not happy, so they will have to find a compromise.
Well, she can always have a bunch of cats instead.
Terrible ending to the series!!
He is right to leave, there is no further development with the Duke character. Therefore, dear authors, put some twist into the story, this is the dead end!
You look beautiful❤❤❤❤❤❤
I really like this. Can you put together a new one! Update.❤️❤️
I think 😮it might be cuz he fell for her, for Real ooh!
Spoiler..................
I'm irritated because they dont follow their own show bible. All that nonsense about the death of the dog Skip, and the kiss and the slap etc etc and we seen none of it. Its like its being written by different sets of writers with a show runner who forgets to check show details. WTF???
Hej da
Season 4 was a disappointment. Eliza and William had more interaction in previous seasons than this one. Clearly Eliza is never going to be with William, so William might as well move on. New York is a great opportunity for this to happen. Obvious, Eliza wants to stay single. So season 4 has been very boring.
If he wants her why leave? Because he wants to force her to change her ways.
Historically accurate but quite off-putting for the viewers.
Or maybe he is just trying to move on
Or maybe he is just trying to move on
He left for him but not "to make her change." It hurts too much to be that near to her knowing, or at least feeling, she doesn't love him the same. It's not a pride or egotistical thing that made him leave. It's him protecting HIS heart for once. He tried moving on with Arabella, but he couldn't. Distance is what he needs, while Eliza needs to both realize and admit how much she loves and needs him, something she'll never do as long a she can convienently use him for selfish reasons.
this season ended on such a low note ; I dont really care if there is a 5 th season. !!! Very poorly done!
But they want different things in life. Maybe they're simply incompatible.
I just do not think he understands that she needs some agency over her life. He does run away, and that was not a terribly tender kiss. I also do not like that fault was discussed in their conversation as to who is the problem here
Good gravy Marie do u even watch the show? Ugh
I did. Did you?
I think Eliza and Nash are better partners. He gets her, and they'd make a good team. 😊
Eww
I think it would be cool if Miss Scarlet and Nash got together. There seems to be chemistry between the characters.
Maybe on paper but I just don’t see an chemistry between them.
I strongly disagree. Patrick is not the one. The chemistry is just not there.
