- John Thornton has to be one of the most honorable man among the period dramas gentleman. His mother is also such a strong character, and their relationship is a corner stone in his life. His love for Margaret Hale is taking him off guard and reveal a more tender personality than the first distant impression he projects. Mainly I want to say Richard Armitage's voice is everything.

I have been wanting to make another North and South video for so long but those past months have been crazy and I just could not do nay videos. My favorite period drama with the wonderful Richard Armitage and his amazing voice. A bit of romance and escapism for the holiday season, nothing better !
@Judy Morrill ...Don’t care, he is very easy on the eye & this pairing for North & South were perfect. I’m afraid poor John has what is called ‘A Doting Mother’....no one would have ever been good enough for him in her eyes.
So what if he does, it's a nice romantic story.

@@NoctiLucent81 Thanks a lot ! Well, it helps a lot to have watched this mini series a gazillion times 😄 for software, I used Sony Vegas. The hardest imo is to create a script to give structure and an arc to the video, trying to tell a story within the story. Otherwise, it ends up being just a random collection of moments.
The fact that he never told on her with the police and respected her and continued to love her even as he was convinced that she was in love with another and he could never have her is a high level of love and respect.
I watch that one around 2005 on history channel in India

Yes I think that is the best part about the book and the movie is that he still will and continues to love her . The great thing about this book is that people fall in love over a period of time this is better than Disney classics
The scene I love the most, even more than when they kissed, is at the very end when they were sitting together on the train and not even looking at each other. Both had the look of peace at finally knowing that they loved each other and belonged to each other.
This series was utter perfection

I couldn't agree more. It has been a favorite mini series for years. I can't count the times I have watched it and it still moves me. I echo the sentiments in another comment. Wish they could do a sequel. The writing and acting in this is phenomenal. So well casted. 👏👏👏

I only recently discovered this as a distraction from my obsession with Sanditon Season 2 in my search for other period dramas. OMG, I am so thrilled I found it! I've watched it back to back already. Wonderful acting by Armitage and Denby-Ashe. This drama's a keeper for the books!!

In the end of the book Margaret says ‘I don’t deserve you’. I love that she realizes his value.
Especially when he is not in a good position financially, but it doesn’t matter for her as she knows his real value.
Richard Armitage is an amazing actor and so handsome, so elegant. I love his hands.

The music in the series is breathtaking.
So wonderful, and we did not need overexposed sex scenes to grasp the fire in their love.
As someone once said. “A sex scene is written when a writer can think of no other way to say two characters are attracted to each other.”
@@michaeljenner2325 Very smart. And Daniella Denby and Richard Armitage were brillant at this. And almost all the episodes have nothing to do with sex, but that deep love, attraction and respect is oh, so strongly felt in the undercurrent. Genius.

I absolutely adore that this compilation is told primarily from the mother’s perspective instead of just John and Margaret. Because you see so much of the depth to John that he only reveals to his mom that gets lost when you leave the mom out of it.
Even though he’s formidable to the world, he’s a fledgling chick getting strong enough to fly on his own with his mother and he’s devoted to her and his raw vulnerability to her about Margaret and how she encourages him when he plans to propose just makes the proposal scene that much deeper
Absolutely, she is as much the center piece of the story as Margaret and John and the actress's portrayal is just wonderfully layered.
Bought the DVD of this randomly at HMV when I was in college and to this day feel like I had unearthed a treasure. The cast was 10/10.

The first time I watched North And South it became one of my most loved movies. That’s when I discovered Richard Armitage and what a fine actor her is. A great historical drama, thank you for this video I loved watching it.

This is my favorite romance of all time, and I think Margaret Hale is the greatest female heroine ever written. The ending scene is so lovely and sweet. Love, love, love this series and its actors. Thanks for posting this.
The manner in which he looks from an altitude he is naturally blessed with...is mesmerizing,totally sweeps one off ones feet...His postures fully justifying his character,position of power,warmth and love flowing down from his merciful eyes,unmatched !!!

I think I'm more in love with John Thornton and rather prefer him over Mr. Darcy because in my opining John Thornton's demonstration of vulnerability seems more genuine than Mr. Darcy's. Both incredible gentlemen but I'm definitely a sucker for Thornton (AND his mother is one of my favorite PD characters ever, their relationship just makes everything even better). Absolutely agree, John Thornton is by far my favorite period drama gentleman. And his mother ... the actress is plain fantastic. All the second roles are brilliant in this adaptation.

Heck yes! I always thought Darcy was a douche. But Thorton has been honest since the beginning, never proud, but very firm. His description in the book is so good. I'm definitely a lover of Thornton!
Darcy had the money behind him, so he could afford to be arrogant, where-as John was a working man & many depended on him for the food on their tables & a roof over their heads. Saying that, he is definitely one of the better romantic hero’s of this genre.

They did a good job casting these actors in this adaptation. The book is better than the movie but this is good. That mother!! What a character.
The book is lovely, yes! This is a very good adaptation, not 100% true to the book, but it captures the essence of the story and as a movie it is just perfect. The casting, customes, music, acting, direction, just superb.

How much I'd like to hear him call her thrice with her maiden name and a voice trembling with burning passion... Richard Armitage would have nailed this scene.
For me, the book ending as much as rushed it might have been, is superior to the ending given in the drama. Not that I'm complaining, lol.

I read the book first then watched the series and equally love both. I do love Pride and Prejudice but I prefer North and South. While PP revolves more around manners, NS draws on poverty and struggles. PP is dreamy, NS is reality and in life, we could definitely use both 🥰
I love this show. Just think in two more years it'll be its 20'th year anniversary! It deserves as much attention as p&p movie had. More in my opinion. I've told every friend about this movie and each one came back happy to have watched it.

Yes I love this period drama , I save it up after some period of time , and put time aside snuggle down and watch every episode (pure magic) from the cotton flying around the factory floor to the beautiful last scene (although Catherine Gaskell ending in the book is completely different) but without a doubt we all must say that this feel good conclusion gets it just right .To all the cast to the composer (Oh that music 🤗) and the BBC in better days , I applaud you 👏👏 .As time passes ,waiting in anticipation for my next viewing 😌

Thank you, my first videos had that problem but as I learnt to use the software better I definitely make a point to try and balance music and dialogues properly. Plus who wouldn't want to hear Richard Armitage's voice !

I adore the last scene of the series, but I wouldn't mind if instead of kissing (which wouldn't happen in real Victorian times, as it's portrayed in the show), I wish the writers had added some elements of their last scene in the room, where they discussed the business. The way Elizabeth Gaskell described him clasping her and them just sitting in silence, was just perfect even without any kissing.
Both in series and novel would hv preferred Mr Bell play little role in bringing the truth of Fredrick..
Like maybe write a letter explaining to John before dying (in book he dies).
