Sometimes crappy mental health makes us plant people neglect our plants, or you get busy and forget to check, especially if it's in a spot where it's the only plant.
So many things could contribute to a person owning a hoya like this 💛 Other commenters mentioned mental health situations and that "life happens", which are both totally true and valid answers. It could also happen due to neurodivergence or a necessary shift in life priorities (ie., your kiddos need more care than your plants for a long or short while, or your energetic capacity is low for a few weeks due to pushing yourself to show up for other people or in other ways). I hope this answer highlights diverse plant-owning perspectives and helps to answer your question!
Thank you for showing real life and inspiring us to not give up. You are a bright light. Not to get too philosophical but...caring for plants teach us so many life lessons (humility, patience, gratitude, perseverance etc). We learn from our mistakes and become stronger and wiser
The golden pothos did give me good laugh. Even the “easy” plants can get away from us sometimes when we got a lot going on. I appreciate you posting a video that’s real! Your content is so much more relatable to the common plant owner. Thanks
She said everything I said after I commented because this is reality not all the plants are perfect in your house even if you get them healthy and cared for them sometimes things just go wrong it could be the soil that they were in the environment like you said AC etc. I loved it cuz it was realistic I'm so glad I found you I love it. Nothing like finding someone that you can relate to which is so hard anymore on these UA-cam streets
Sending lots of love and kindness. I lost so many plants last year due to depression, and we can be really hard on ourselves about it, especially the ones we loved so much!
Hey girl I just want to say how much I appreciate how real you are with everyone you literally are amazing and we learn so much from you and to anybody that is reading this I hope you have an amazing day and please like this video comment and subscribe because it helps her out so much thank you
No, I agree with your end statements! I don’t think it is more than what it needs to be, at all! I think it is so important to always be and feel authentic and to show your authenticity. I absolutely feel it’s so vital for us all to feel comfortable in authenticity with each other. But it starts with being comfortable with that in ourselves. And our plant family ❤️😁
BRAVA HARLI!! Thanks so much for supporting the not-so-perfect plants! Those imperfections are badges of honor, if you ask me. They represent trials and tribulations that you and that plant lived through together. Isn’t that what it’s really all about? ☺️
I’m glad you said what you did about showing the not so ”perfect”. It’s so easy to get caught up in thinking everyone else “has it together” when we all have our struggles whether it be keeping our plants healthy, our families happy, our mental struggles whatever. I wish every one would be as real and honest. Thank you Harli.
I click on these types of videos every time. I appreciate seeing other plant owners sick plants because I learn a lot. I have quite a few sick plants that have just stumped me as to what's wrong. Thanks Harli! Love your content
One thing I love about you is your not fake you have a lot on your plate two children a home a buisness a husband pets and a ton of plants I dont know how you hold it together as good as you do thank you
Oh!!! I have a air vents in two key areas under racks and I got those vent hoods to redirect the air into another direction. If that helps anybody :) I got them in winter to redirect hot air but I use them for ever season now.
Hey Harli! For your Hoya compacta, you should try Keiki paste on the bare vines! U make a tiny little cut above the node and place the paste there and it'll get new growth! Look up houseplusplant. She has a video on it!
I have never had good luck with monstera Peru, I’ve had 2 and given them both away. Found one at lowes today and love the plant so decided to try it again
Hey Harli, I just wanted to say thank you for keeping it real and being real yourself . So many people on social media acts like everything is wonderful like .. they looks , makeup or relationships , family , kids , plants … exc. I’ve killed zz plant twice , my monsters looking droopy all the time now . But I’m gonna be keep trying . We all got straggles and why we refuse to talk about it instead of showing like everything is perfect !
Thank you for this video! It's nice to know that even plant gurus can struggle with plants. 🙂 Also very helpful to know the reasons why you think they are struggling so that we don't make the same mistakes! Have you ever thought about doing a "fix my plant" video? Sharing common problems and how to fix them? Or user picture submissions and care advice? That might be helpful too! Much love xx
I appreciate your honest and real life videos! My struggling plants are a variety of peperomias and a monstera adansonii. All of them I forgot to adjust watering / move them back with summer light and there are some crispy bits. Life happens.
I had had 3 monstera a addisoni I & am on my 4th (a wk in) bc I just can’t win w/them! Seems they always get yellow spots in the leaves & eventually die off & it’s not due to pets so idk what the issue is.
Appreciate this video, Harli, and the way you keep it real. Agree with you 100% that conversations about our plant successes and challenges is far more interesting than pretending we live everyday in a filtered La La Land.
I appreciate the truth videos and plant chore videos! I feel so bad when a new plant is struggling.....I finally bought myself a ficus tineke but it's got spider mites :( Working hard to try and save it and it gave me a new branch!
I gave up on the Watermelon Pepperomia. I am not replacing it. My Antherium seems to be struggling too. I think I need to take it out and look at the roots. My Scindapsus Jade is outside and is doing great. Alot of the plants don't like chlorinated water
My planty journey started with succulents so I’ve become a chronic underwaterer of everything else, or I overcompensate and drown them 😂 Edit: omg the watermelon peperomia…I could NOT keep mine alive, they are so tricky
Thank you for this video and showing us that life doesn't always mean picture perfect. I'm really bad at checking for pests and I realized that my struggling plants were infested with spider mites (like literally 40 plants) spraying them with mite killer wasn't doing anything so I have just completely sprayed them off with water and switched out the soil. I feel so bad for the plants that were struggling, wish I looked at them sooner.
Awe that sucks I’m sorry :( . my entire collection got mites and truly don’t know how it’s possible. I’ve been spraying for weeks to no avail. I hope you’re having better luck than me!!
This is long but good info! Hi, I had the SAME thing happen last yr w/just as many plants as you & I tried everything you have & also diatomaceous earth which was kinda the last straw for my hubby due to the mess I had ALL over the house bc I was very generous w/it, lol! Eventually hubby came home w/a very large gift card to buy new plants & told me to toss the others which literally broke me & I couldn’t do it myself but long story short it was so bad I had to toss 2-3 dozen including my prized 15 yr old $ tree!!! Lesson I learned is to use systemic granules in ALL my plants & repeat every 2mo & spray everything regardless or how they look every few wks w/ “ Take down” & lastly all new plants I either repot asap or knock off the top inch of soil & spray every 3days for 2wks & keep them separate (as much as possible given I have SO many plants!) for said 2wks & if healthy they can join the reg population of my plants. Also I wash my hands & or use new gloves between touching each plant & change clothes or wear an apron either clean or sprayed off w/alcohol between planting new or old plants. Sounds drastic but once you loose a cpl thousand $’s & countless hrs spent on plants you may get a bit paranoid! I know this is such a LONG reply but I hope it helps! PS: keep spraying foliage w/water regularly & try not to let them touch each other.
I just moved most of my plants to the new apartment I am sharing with my boyfriend, and between the stress of the move and the lack of light (grow lights were ordered this morning!) my avocado tree is really really droopy and sad. I'm so scared I'm going to lose it before grow lights get in. So far the others are doing fine but will definitely be happier when artificial light is installed.
Omg the golden pothos 😆 I thought I was the only one with a not-so-beautiful specimen 😂 I recently took a bunch of cuttings and only one seems to have made it. Meanwhile my rarer cuttings are thriving
I continually keep all my pothos variety’s propagating. When they’ve established a full root system in the jar I “fill in” my balding spots. I call it the “Growth Club for Greens”. Everyone asks me “what kind of food do you feed THOSE 👀?” LOL
I really needed this video. I've been struggling with a few plants, and it really helps to hear I'm not the only one that hasn't been a perfect plant parent lately. Sometimes life just happens and even the things that bring us joy can be overwhelming.
Love this video and love the realness you’re promoting. Thanks Harli. I recently lost my scindapsus argyraeus, the easiest dang plant I own, because I was lazy and tried out a self watering pot and root rotted her. It happens.
I’ve just had to chop up my Hoya polyneura and I’m so sad about it! It wasn’t very big (1 baby plant with 1 vine) but I love the plant so much I really want to keep it alive!
I was going to just send a message saying that nobody can be as bad as I am because I killed my philodendron. But then… You showed your potho and I don’t feel bad anymore thank you for that
Harli, close your basement vents! Let the cool air go to your upper floor, the basement doesn't need it. In the winter when you open the vents back up you can buy a clear plastic flow director and attach it pointing away from your plants. I've got some sad ass looking plants too, moving cross country can do that!
Love you, Harli, because you ARE real. We all have a plant or few that struggles. With hundreds to care for, it's easy to overlook some. I've actually lost plants before and didn't find them until it was too late. Keep up the good work; you have a great channel. 💗
Your only human. Besides you make me feel waaaay better bout myself an my babies wen they act up. Love all your videos. The ones like this help us to figure out wats wrong an how to possibly fix. Keep being you girl!! Ur brasil is gorgeous, as always!!
you might already know this but i’ve found pilea peperomioides to dislike drying out and to be pretty heavy feeders. the fertilization helped with my yellowing leaves
I've just starting watching your videos, you are amazing! I'm learning so much. You have given me the confidence to do what I really want to. I LOVE plants, but only have about 40, but plan on expanding. I'm retired, so have plenty of time to spend on taking care of plants. Keep up the great work!!! Thanks
Both of my fittonias had been thriving for like the last two years and suddenly they’ve been crisping up I can’t figure out what went wrong cuz they haven’t been “drooping” like thirsty I think maybe they got too much light or something I don’t know 😅 And then I have killed a Zz it was in too big of a pot and it got root rot and that is a “impossible to kill plant” lol You got this!! Also I would chop up that Hoya to the pot it’ll grow that long and beautiful again!
I personally admire beholding transparency and integrity when looking inward. Being open, truthful, and real is what makes life balanced and worth living. One of my teachers, Goenka of the Vipassana meditation, always told funny stories about how Life and Enlightment are about embracing and acknowledging everything, all our shadows and all of our light, being held by us lovingly, laughing at it all once we're on the otherside. Responding instead of Reacting, and To look our pain in the eye at the center and truly feel it the way it's asking us to be felt. Then and only then can that pain be released into the cosmos and back into the source. You are one of these kinds of people who is boldly unafraid of vulnerability, yet honest about where you are in the process and that's a true strength. Thanks for being the change! #equilibrium #foodforfeels
My Pilea looks EXACTLY the same. I think I'm letting it get a little to dry so it is making the older leaves sad. The lean started this winter so probably just light... Good to know I'm not alone!
Thank you for sharing this with us.. was thinking I'm the only one who can't tk good care of alllll of my plants!!. Thanks dear.. keep posting such updates
I really appreciate the sickly plant videos! Could you make a video about ones who were on the struggle bus that you managed to turn around and how you did it? I always panic when a plant goes south and then end up doing more harm than good trying to bring it back to life 😬 love your videos so much, sorry that some of your videos haven’t been doing as well as you hoped but please know I’ve enjoyed every one of them
This video is so funny and relatable. I feel like the more plants you have it can be easy to neglect some especially the ones that are "easier". My golden pothos just started acting up as well.
On the pothos I 100% think its the planter. I just cannot keep things alive in those porous type cachepot / containers. I Hit a Menards and get one of those black plastic containers for 88 cents.
My opinion is the plants that survive are the ones that like my watering method. If they can’t survive me forgetting to water them then into the compost bin they go.😊
Such good video, and an amazing message at the end. I know lots of plant people that just throw out their plants when they're struggling instead of rehabbing them to make their collection seem like it is always perfect. This video make me feel better about the Begonia I keep forgetting to water :P
This video I truly appreciate because I'm kinda tired of only seeing the perfect side of new plant ownership. Like gimmie that plant that got a sunburn or that Agleonema that got over watered and it's sitting in the corner singing "Don't cry for me Argentina!" Show me the cactus the cat booted to the floor with kitty vengeance. Do a close up on that Sanseveria we all bought on clearance that leaves look like it did a tango with a weed whacker but it was only $1.50 at Lowes and who doesn't have the five years for it to make a recovery! I need the soap opera drama of the plants going thru a midlife crisis to know I'm not the only one with that Frankenstien shelf in the back by a window. The isle of the misfit toys plant section we all got in our homes. Heheehehehehehe*
I was laughing so much at this while also feeling exceptionally proud of your expository writing as if I was your creative language teacher! I love this post so much. So many true, yet funny yet creative, words said here! 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼 ❤️ 🤗
Everyone says how "easy" pileas are but mine looks like crap and is def an embarrassment. I love how you accused it of throwing a fit 😆😆😆😆 ima go with that.
Girrrl, ever since we moved, my plants have been dying. I even repotted some only to see them get worse! I've even tried putting some into the bathroom for added humidity. I've been looking for my humidifier unpacking boxes now. I thought they would've thrived better since we left the desert, but nope! I'm almost ready to give up on having any real plants.😫
Don’t give up!! I’m not saying lose yourself in trying to rescue every plant, let the ones go that just aren’t responding or you don’t feel inspired enough to keep perusing…no need to torture yourself in that way I feel. And maybe lightening up the rescue load may keep you going for the rest of your collection. You had beautiful plants before the move. The move didn’t make you unable to care for plants! You just have a set of challenges to grow through for a moment or three. Keep going! I believe in you.
Yay!! Makes me feel good about my efforts cause that happens with my plants too. I have a few that I just can't seem to get their everything right. Thank you, Harli, for a great video. Good luck with getting them back to their beautiful selves again and I forgot the last time - good luck with getting on Survivor! I love the show and I would cheer for you if you make it on there! It would be nice to see you in a completely different setting.
I have one that no matter what I try to do for it it’s not happy. My Homalomena Selby. Always crispy leaves and the latest leaf refuses to even open. Bums me out because it would be so pretty if it would just act right! 😄 Thanks for being real. 💚🌱🌿🪴💚
I love these videos....I have been on the struggle bus since day 1 with my watermelon pepperomia I dont know what I'm doing wrong lol.....thanks so much for sharing have an amazing week!💙💙
Thank you harli :) really feel you on all of this. Thank you for talking about your Tahitian bridal veil vine too. Also great to see how you placed it to make it look it’s best 🌟
I currently have an aglaonema that's just a stump in the soil with no leaves, one struggling maranta with yellow leaves, and a cast iron plant with yellow leaves. All of them are pretty much from overwatering. Hope they can recover soon.
Thank you so much for this video, I’m a new plant mom but have already killed a few plants and it dies make you feel crappy. Also getting mushrooms in my Alocasia and one of my cheese plants
Thank you! I can't get a rex begonia to live longer than a month, and my tradescantias hate me. If even Harli can have plants that aren't perfect, its ok for me not to be perfect too!!
You should chop and prop your Hoya compacta!!! All those naked stems are perfect to get rooting and then you’ll probably be able to get another full pot out of those clippings 🤣 it’ll also probably throw out so beautiful new growth after you trim all of that off! 🤍🌱
I am struggling with Nanouk. I’ve bought them 3 times and they’ve all died. I tried to root a bunch of cuttings in water and the stems started to rot. Now I’m trying to root what’s left of the cuttings in sphagnum moss and perlite.
Wow. How can you let the hoya get THAT fucking bad? gg
Sometimes crappy mental health makes us plant people neglect our plants, or you get busy and forget to check, especially if it's in a spot where it's the only plant.
Life happens lol.
💩 happens
Are you really being mean or are you just kidding?

This made me feel so much better. I'm not the only one struggling with certain plants 🌿😅
YES, to being real about plants & our own struggles!! Thank you Harli, I think your the best.
Videos like this make me feel better about how hard of a time I have with some plants

I hope vlogs trying it. That seems cool
I had bare spots on my compacta from last year and this summer a few spots grew new leaves! Hoya are amazing.
Will this wrk w/all Hoyas?
Also who has a video on it? You said “she”. Thanks!
I have never had good luck with monstera Peru, I’ve had 2 and given them both away. Found one at lowes today and love the plant so decided to try it again

Throw your compacta in your grow tent. The humidity will really help it and if it’s in the grow tent, you won’t moss watering it.
Good video Harli, glad I'm not the only one with Peperomoides betrayal!!
Both of my fittonias had been thriving for like the last two years and suddenly they’ve been crisping up I can’t figure out what went wrong cuz they haven’t been “drooping” like thirsty I think maybe they got too much light or something I don’t know 😅
And then I have killed a Zz it was in too big of a pot and it got root rot and that is a “impossible to kill plant” lol
You got this!!
Also I would chop up that Hoya to the pot it’ll grow that long and beautiful again!
THANK YOU!!! You have helped me not feel like a failure with a few of my plants and I only have about 50 of them but again, THANK YOU SO MUCH 💚🌿🍃

My Pilea looks EXACTLY the same. I think I'm letting it get a little to dry so it is making the older leaves sad. The lean started this winter so probably just light... Good to know I'm not alone!
Still my most favorite planty UA-camr. 💚💚💚
We all go through stuff. Plants go through stuff. I love that you are bold and real about it. Fake plant people are so annoying to me
This has made me feel so so much better. Thank you for your honesty xxxx
I always panic when a plant goes south and then end up doing more harm than good trying to bring it back to life 😬 love your videos so much, sorry that some of your videos haven’t been doing as well as you hoped but please know I’ve enjoyed every one of them
yes. thanks for being REAL.
I just lost all of my second floor airplants. We are all still learning. Thanks for this video
Thanks for being real and honest
You are awesome!!
If they can’t survive me forgetting to water them then into the compost bin they go.😊
KEIKI PASTE!!!! Put it on all the nodes that lost leaves and I a few months and those babies will have now growth ‼️
Thank you for the realness! These kinds of videos make me feel better about the state of a few of mine 💚
"Look at how it looks sitting on the shelf... next to all of my other beautiful plants!" *Grabs the dead leaf next to it* 💀 That had me howling 😂
Me too Earl, that was funny.
I love this so much. So many of my plants are CRUSTY right now.
Hi Harli, you can remove your plants out of the pot, and put them on water for a month it would help
Appreciate you being real with us.
Such good video, and an amazing message at the end. I know lots of plant people that just throw out their plants when they're struggling instead of rehabbing them to make their collection seem like it is always perfect. This video make me feel better about the Begonia I keep forgetting to water :P
I love the speech at the end! You are so inspiring🙌🏻👍🏻🥰
@@heathertroynak9041 I try! LOL*
Thanks for keeping it real Miss Harli!!!
Thank you! This video felt really important for me to see, lol. I totally appreciate the REAL LIFE side that comes along with even experienced folks!
I love this video because it makes me feel like I’m not failing as a plant parent 🥰
LOVED this video! My neon pothos is struggling right now, it's so nice to see when a pro is struggling
Love your content!
You are wonderful human being. I get inspiration from your videos. Thank you.
I love these videos....I have been on the struggle bus since day 1 with my watermelon pepperomia I dont know what I'm doing wrong lol.....thanks so much for sharing have an amazing week!💙💙
I moved my variegated peperomia to my bathroom and its so much better. its bright in there so I keep it away from the window. just a suggestion.
Thank you harli :) really feel you on all of this. Thank you for talking about your Tahitian bridal veil vine too. Also great to see how you placed it to make it look it’s best 🌟
Give your plants more attention, they will all bounce back!
REALITY!!! Thank you Harli G ❤️
Thank you for sharing!! 💚 It’s great watching real plant life 💚🪴💚
I currently have an aglaonema that's just a stump in the soil with no leaves, one struggling maranta with yellow leaves, and a cast iron plant with yellow leaves. All of them are pretty much from overwatering. Hope they can recover soon.
Thank you so much for this video, I’m a new plant mom but have already killed a few plants and it dies make you feel crappy. Also getting mushrooms in my Alocasia and one of my cheese plants
Thank you for watching! Fortunately mushrooms are a good sign that the substrate they’re growing in is healthy 👏
Thank you! I can't get a rex begonia to live longer than a month, and my tradescantias hate me. If even Harli can have plants that aren't perfect, its ok for me not to be perfect too!!
I killed my rex begonia... it's crunchy even though the soil is damp... could it grow back or
You should chop and prop your Hoya compacta!!! All those naked stems are perfect to get rooting and then you’ll probably be able to get another full pot out of those clippings 🤣 it’ll also probably throw out so beautiful new growth after you trim all of that off! 🤍🌱
Watching harli is becoming my new morning routine 😩🥹
Good morning ☀️
I am struggling with Nanouk. I’ve bought them 3 times and they’ve all died. I tried to root a bunch of cuttings in water and the stems started to rot. Now I’m trying to root what’s left of the cuttings in sphagnum moss and perlite.
Watermelon pep is the drama queen of my collection. Glad to see it’s not just me. Thank you
Great honest content, and thanks for giving care tips 💚🌱🥲😌
That compacta was hard to look at! My heart! ❤️🩹
Thank you for normalizing wonky pilea peperomioides. 😂 mine all grow like that, but they’re growing so… they just have extra charm.
