I always keep an eye out for old bird cages. I have house cats and cats and plants don’t always go well together. But a nice bird cage hanging is not only very interesting but it also keeps the kitties from eating the 🪴. :). Love this video!
Great reuse. If you live in a college town, go dumpster diving at the end of the semesters. Instead of buying larger planters, I use trash cans, storage containers, large buckets etc. Put holes in the bottom with a knife or a drill. Bonus if they have lids that can be used for a drip saucer.
We need to see how you make those terrariums Harli! That snow cone machine is going to be epic! Before I got into plants, we moved from a big house into a small cottage with hardly any cupboards, so I put everything I didn’t need to the local charity shops. Tons of glass dishes, candle holders, wicker stuff etc… and I didn’t miss them at all. Fast forward a few years to me being a planty person and I am now scouring those same shops to see if I can pick up stuff like I chucked out😂😂😂
I collect little liquor glasses from the thrift store. When going to someone's home for dinner, I make a small herb bouquet in it and give it to the hostess as a gift.
Love this video! I never thought to go to second hand shops for plant things. And please do more terrarium videos. I made one about a year ago after watching your video and it’s doing great.
I got the cutest little cover pot from a thrift store the other day. It was brand new with a candle in it but I was able to pull the candle out and use it has a cover pot. I loved the design on it ❤
It’s really fun watching you get excited about these things. I can tell you are excited to play with these and it makes me excited for upcoming content. Also, this “turning random things into terrariums/planty things” totally fits that cluttered but cute aesthetic you enjoy. Love it.
Oh my, I just came across this video and am so excited to watch your channel. I thought I was the only one that thrift shops and looks at everything in a plant way. Anything I see I wonder what can I do to use with my plants. Thank you for doing this video.
Great video Harlii! With stuff like baskets, make sure you give them a good sniff before purchasing. I bought a basket from a thrift store and when I brought it home, “what’s that smell?” It smelled like smoke and gave off such an offensive dirty “ash tray” odour! I tried washing it, soaking it in soap/water to no avail. Kept it in the garage for a couple years, and finally the smell went away. I had forgotten about it otherwise it would have gotten donated back, but them someone else would have been stuck with it. 😮
I see young people here on UA-cam mistaking glassware and pottery pieces for ashtrays all the time. A true ashtray will usually have a small ledge or small cut out on the edge of the piece for resting your cigar/cigarette upon. That dish you're holding at 3:03 was probably intended originally to be a candy dish or possibly a candle holder. At 14:02,14:25, and 14:40 those are candy dishes. Decades ago they were very popular when it was customary here in the U.S. to put out little hard candies for guests; they were usually set upon your coffee table in the living room. 15:22 looks like it may have originally been intended as a bud vase. You have some great ideas for "thinking outside the box".
I am in love with terrariums also. The plants just thrive so well in them. I am in love with that lamp. I will be searching for one of those every time I go to a second hand store now. I get all of my baskets from second hand stores. Who can't buy a $30 basket when you get a like new one for a buck!! Please show all of your progress with the builds!
Lately I've enjoyed finding things I can use as cloches. I found a hanging glass cylinder with rounded bottom. The metal hanging part easily unclipped and then I found a set of edged brass coasters that work perfectly for the base. That's been my favorite find so far.
Great ideas. I love using the shallow glass dishes as pot saucers. They look nice, especially for indoor plants. And if they get dirty they can go in the dishwasher.
Been thrifting for plant goods since got into plants. Just some ideas: toilet roll holder as plant stands, cool shaped decanters as awesome water propagation stations, and decorative mugs as fun small cover pots for Orchid (slit-side) pots.
MORE TERARIUM CONTENT. PLEASE I’m so wanting to get into it but I’m not a master propagater yet 😂 I need you to make some content so I can watch it and save it for later 🖤🌿😂🌿
I’m a thrifting junkie and I do the exact same thing. Most of my plant holders and risers are thrifted. Recycle, reuse, reimagine! Great video. Love the terrarium idea. Thanks Harli!
LOVE this! I thrift all the time, but never thought so creatively out of the box. I can't believe you passed up the 5 light gooseneck lamp stand! I paint the covers, and sometimes the stands, and put in grow lights. Then I can have lots of light directed most anywhere. I have few windows, so they are so helpful. Can't wait to see all of your creations!
Great idea! But again I don’t know anything about grow lights, just heard of them. Maybe information on that subject, or maybe you have that! Thanxabunch ❤️😀
@@rachelburgener819 you can get the grow lights that look like regular light bulbs, or kind of like flood light bulbs. Just depends on the globes. Most of those multi light stands will hold either ones. They light up the room just like regular lights, also. Hope this helps. 🥰🪴
I have been thrifting for decades and using many of my finds for my plants but I never thought of using a pole lamp as a receptacle for a plant, what a great idea. Love the big glass lamp. I have seen them filled with a lot of different things but never a terrarium, kudos. The snow cone machine I would definitely be using to make snow cones,I would love one right now. Thanks for the great video.
I would love you to take us along thrifting! Love the baskets. I'm not really into terrariums?? But will still watch cuz- all things plants are great A
Perfect video! I started doing the same thing a few years ago. Large candleholders and small cake stands make great pedestals for displaying plants at different heights. I've also purchased terra cotta wine coolers and these make great planters. I'll either drill holes in them or just place a plastic 32oz yoghurt cup with drainage holes inside. I too buy mini glass vases for plant propagation, especially different shapes in different colors. These are usually $1 or less. Same with crystal or glass bowls for saucers. You are a woman after my own heart. I love to reimagine!
Wow, I hope you dump those containers after the water seeps out or your roots will rot...what a super idea to use lamp stands for plants...I've never heard of that before.
Excited to see what you guys do with that lamp! Very cool! I love that you encourage people to think outside the box and save some money! Plants and plant stuff can get pretty expensive 😅
If the bubble gum machine has a PLASTIC Dome instead of glass, you could melt holes in it & plant wandering jew steams thru out. The planter would be lush in no time. But someone mentioned using as a begonia planter. That would REALLY make that red POP!
I do like the Terrarium content! The whimsical ones, like the snow cone and the bubble gum, are especially sweet. Candle stands have been proven to be fantastic plant stands
Yes to all the terrariums!!! I'm personally getting more into them because of how easy they make it to care for a large number of plants, it also helps that my favorite types of plants are begonias :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! My mom tells me every chance she gets that I need to be shopping for plant stuff in the thrift store and every time I go I look for plant stuff. I would have never thought to buy saucers for under your plants, genius idea. I love you terrariums and think you do an amazing job. Can't wait to see what you do with your finds.
You could totally make the snow cone machine into a very cool terrarium but I immediately thought you have two children and how much fun would they have making snowcones in the hot summer😊 I cannot wait to see the lamp as a terrarium😍
The other thing you can do with lamps is take them apart and use the pieces as risers. Most metal lamps will come apart easily, just unscrew the parts after you cut the cord and pull it out.
I loved this video! I’m a huge thrifter and plant lover and I’m always looking for things I can use for plant care. I love how you display things in your home so I’m so excited to see your projects 😍I hope you do more of these plant thrift videos
I'm so glad I just found your channel, now I can show my husband and daughter that I'm not crazy when I buy these type of things for my plants I just bought some really old pendant chain hanging lights for my grow light bulbs. I also found 2 cute med sized birdcage style candle holders I put my string of bananas in one and my wandering zebrina plant in the other then I used some old candle scroll sconces that are about 6 or 7 in. from the wall. Im getting 2 uses out of them for one the back loop of the scroll design works perfectly for holding my curtain rod the farther scroll loop worked great for hanging the birdcages with the plants in them I just used some chain extension for hanging plants or lights to get the perfect hanging position so I could still reach them when watering. Awesome finds I agree 👍 I'll try to share pics of my findings and creative ideas I come across
Love this! I thrift all the time for planty things! I never thought to use a torchiere lamp as a plant stand; genius! I already have one that I don't use as a lamp anymore, but haven't had the heart to get rid of, as it belonged to my great aunt. Now I can keep it! I search for cake stands. You can find them in all shapes and sizes to fit various size pots. If it comes with a cover, it can be used as a cloche, keeping in moisture for small plants and propagations. I use them in my cabinet to raise up plants that need to be closer to my grow lights. It serves two purposes; gets the plant closer to the light and elevates the look of the cabinet, making it more interesting, drawing you in to take a closer look!
I do same! Even found cute wicker baskets that had plastic liners in them for drainage! I dnt care for handles either. Perfect cover pots! An a few cute vases
The vase at 15-15 would be cool to make a hydro type of bonsai with transparent glass marbles as medium and grow a bonsai with it watching the roots grow down and down over time ^^
I look for taller glass candle holders. The ones that can hold larger pillar candles. They make great risers, and still let light through to the other plants on my shelf.
YESSS TERRARIUM AND shopping videos!!!! 💗💗💗The large glass vessel is great for a cloche on a glass plate🤩. After my friend had a spider mite break out,I ditched any baskets that couldn't be cleaned. Mini blinds too, tossed those. Anything that is a pain to properly scrub. Can't wait to see your projects,so exciting 🎉🎉💓
I love these ideas! I haven’t been able to find saucers recently in garden centres so I’m definitely going to look for some glass ones from the charity shop ❤ thank you ❤
Awesome Sauce!!!!!!! This video was awesome!!! Please do more like this. You gave me a lot of ideas to help showcase my plants. Please also do videos showing how you've used them.
What an awesome video!!! I recently went shopping for deep ceramic planters to make pretty self watering pots, but ended up finding a bunch of awesome things I could use in the bathroom and the kitchen sections instead (small toothbrush holders for tiny plant babies in 2,5” pots, and cookie jars for a 4” nursery pot). Not a thrift shop though, but I will most definitely start going there instead!
Excellent video! I got the idea of thrifting for plant supplies from one of your older videos! Happy you are giving some tips. What product are you using on your lips in this video?
Yes! I’ve found lots of white plant containers, some have draining space. I save the plastic cups from previous purchases and then find prettier thrift store containers! Fun. Ahna
I love making things from glass and have made bird baths and plant risers . I is soo cool when you add an up or puck light under them , both in your house or yard .
This video was great Harli! All the times I've skipped over the crystal section thinking I didn't need any of them.... You have given them new life and I know what I'm looking for after the holiday is over!! Thank you! 💚
Love this! When I cleaned out my dad's place, he had so many retro ashtrays that I love. I use them for jewelry and other little things. And they remind me of my dad. 💛
I have gotten some med. sized Betta bowls on those cat, dog, frog bases and converted them into mini terrariums. I also have found old spindly / wood canes which I have taken to using for trellis's I have end found drift wood I have taken for a more natural architectural landscape look for focal points in a room as alternatives to wire or moss poles. I found a narrow hopi ladder for blankets and put a Cebu blue at the base of it and training it to climb up waiting for the leaf pattern to change on it as it matures. I like finding unique / forgotten pieces and using them in a way it looks like nature is reclaiming them in a over grown look. My one weird find was a old beat up carpenter's tool carrying case from a auction I took and converted into using the wooden compartments into individual spaces to house different species of Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas cactuses spilling over the sides so at different points in the year it's blooming so it's like having a ever changing flowering arrangement in the house. I watched endless terrarium videos for plant names and would sketch out their concepts and then my ideas and combine them to come up with unique looks to tinny spaces.
I love the little cart for a terrarium! Now I need to find one. I'm always looking for unique things to use for terrariums. Love this video and want more please.
I love the lamp ideas. Thank you for sharing. I am always looking in the glass section for items to use for planty things. My favorite thing to buy is glass cake stands to put plants on.
That tall stack of little flat baskets was holders for paper plates. We used this at cookouts when I was a kid. You'd stick a single paper plate in the flat basket to make it more durable for holding your food. I haven't seen one in ages.
The thrift store is me and my son’s FIRST go to place for plant shopping and YES the glass section is our favorite! Never thought about using those bowls as pot trays though so THANKS! I AM mad that I didn’t go with my first guy though and buy those floor lamps I saw 2 days ago for my grow light bulbs though. He said they were ugly 🙄. I’m going back to see if they still have any and use the top piece to hold one of my Pothos! LOVE IT ❤ Nee subscriber here!
I thrift most of my plant vessels/jars for my plants in semi-hydro, and glass plates to set on my wire shelves to make them level. Loved this video and can’t wait to see what you do with that cool lamp!!
Nice tips :3 Do you have tips on how to use pots that do not have drainage holes? Do you put a bunch of rocks or clay pebbles at the bottom? How does it alter watering? Where I live I find like 10-20 pots that don't have drainage for every single pot that has drainage holes. Does it affect what I should plant in them at all or can it be adapted without drilling?
Hi, I absolutely love your excitement and enthusiasm, you are contagious!!! Your ideas for terrariums are awesome, not crazy at all. You have a fantastice, creative imagination. Keep on with the wonderful videos of everything you love.
I really want to see how you turn that clock into a terranium. Thanks for all the ideas, I need more lights! I hadn’t thought of buying lamps there and just putting grow bulbs in there.
I always keep an eye out for old bird cages. I have house cats and cats and plants don’t always go well together. But a nice bird cage hanging is not only very interesting but it also keeps the kitties from eating the 🪴. :). Love this video!

This is a true GEM of a video. I love your sense of humor! Yes, you love plants darling!

This is adorable, love that idea!
@Harli G , thifting=treasure hunting=less waste in landfills & saving💰❤...Keep up the FANTASTIC work!

I have a really pretty glass container with a lid but I’ve tried a terrarium a couple times and both times the plants rotted. 😢
If they’re rotting try using sterile soil and much, much less water. Or leave it open until it gets to a perfect moisture level and then seal it.

Great ideas. I just thrifted 2 urn type planters and am on the hunt for a third for a center grouping on my dining room table🌲

It’s totally my go-to store for all of my weird plants needs!🎉🎉🎉
Yes! I’ve found lots of white plant containers, some have draining space. I save the plastic cups from previous purchases and then find prettier thrift store containers! Fun.
Ahna
I’ve seen videos where people paint the glass vases to make them look like vessels. I really enjoyed your enthusiasm.
Harli, thank you for sharing these ideas and making this video. You have a lot great options for terrariums. I look forward to that video.
I love making things from glass and have made bird baths and plant risers . I is soo cool when you add an up or puck light under them , both in your house or yard .

Love this! When I cleaned out my dad's place, he had so many retro ashtrays that I love. I use them for jewelry and other little things. And they remind me of my dad. 💛
I use hanging or wall mounted candle holders for tea lights to propagate cuttings and also save space :)
Plant styling is what I get excited about, more videos like this please 😃
I work at a thrift store 🤩
Find a lot of cool things for my plants 🪴
With a Diamond bit you can drill holes in a lot of those containers 😊

This is a great video. I love how practical you are... Let's face it, this is an expensive hobby without tips like these!
I love the little cart for a terrarium! Now I need to find one. I'm always looking for unique things to use for terrariums. Love this video and want more please.
Harli, these are great ideas and finds!
This video is so great. I would love to go thrifting with you because these are the same things I always look for!!
I can't wait to see the lamp terrarium!!! 😍
PLEASE do videos on the final look with these. Insane finds! I can’t wait to see the lamp 😆
I thrift most of my plant vessels/jars for my plants in semi-hydro, and glass plates to set on my wire shelves to make them level. Loved this video and can’t wait to see what you do with that cool lamp!!
Your enthusiasm is contagious 😘❤️❤️❤️
I love thrifting for planters and glasswares!
