When you said slow growing plants won’t show signs of decline as quickly, I couldn’t agree more. My ZZ plant suffered in low light after a while, it took over 6 months of minimal light until I saw the signs it was suffering. I put it there under the idea that it would be fine in a darker room. It’s now coming back to life after being moved to indirect bright light, but very slowly of course.

I’m just throwing this out there but in my house heat helps my low light areas and %50ish humidity helps too, temperature plays a huge role in growth, I noticed my dark place still has happy plants because it’s also a warmer house with humidity between %35-70 year round. I add lamps wherever possible but heat makes the biggest difference

Sansevierias grow like trees in Africa. They get get full direct sun, all day everyday & yet people shove them in a dark corner. I keep my Sansevierias & zz plants on the sunniest windowsills I have & under grow lights 🙂 I think I now have about 63 + Sansevierias.

I have low light. The best work around, is to have doppelgangers of your plants. Let one sit outside for a few days, put the other inside. Switch them around. You need a shaded space outside though. As an inside plant, can't just go outside into direct sunlight. This is the best work around. Even in winter. Though I don't freeze or get snow in Australia. My set-up for outside plants, give them added protection too.
So basically, find a protected, albeit confined space outside, to give your plants a break - year round. If you have to build a small greenhouse lean-to, or a shade house, do it. Heck of a lot easier to bring the plants to the sunlight, than it is to renovate the house. But you have to be dedicated with the switching of plants around.

I changed my living room lamp light bulbs to grow bulbs. Also, if you have a plant in a low light corner, a desk lamp with a grow bulb works great too.

Hi Harli, thanks so much for another great video, I have been dong a lot of plant maintenance and cleaning off a lot of my plants leaves, because I do understand that helps them to get the light they need, the photogenesis. I have also been watching them carefully and when I notices they are not as happy where they are I try and move them to a better spot. Being a plant parent can be a challenge for sure but still a joy to grow plants. I hope that you day is good and have a great week as well, sending love and hugs, bye for now. 😂🥰🤗👋🙌🙏💜💜💜

I put my ZZ plant in a NE facing window, and it will push out three to four new stems several times a year. They might survive low light, but you will get more and better growth with medium to bright light. Draceana will do very well in low light though.

I bought my first plant in May, which was a ZZ plant (her name is Ellen and she’s the first plant I kept alive💚).
The tag said “low light”, and that didn’t make much sense to me because plants need light? So I stuck her in my sun room, which has north, east, and south windows, and she has absolutely thrived! In less than 4 months, she’s doubled in height, and grown 5 new stems, most of which are even taller than the original ones. I think she grows fast, especially for a “slow grower that thrives in low light” like the tag said 😂 Since then, I give my plants pretty much as much light as I can (minus long, direct sun for many of them).

Peace lily do well in low light because in nature, they grow on the tropical rain forests floor. That's also why it's a thirsty heifer. I leave mine sitting in a pot of water about 1 inch deep. When that water is gone, regardless of the levels of moisture in the pot, it will faint.

I completely agree, I have a lot of plants in my north facing windows, but we’re on a 6th floor corner apartment so the plants get a “full unobstructed view” of the sky. I consider my north windows on the lower end of medium light exposure and not straight up low light. My Adonsonii, Spider Plant and Aglaonema Maria all thrive there and put out new growth year around.

I think possibly I should cut it all off and just start completely fresh?

Hi harlig. Just taking time and money of course to get back into growing and building my collection. Propagating succulents. I love the Petal Leaf plant. I had a tiny one that was a gift and it came in rough shape from the winter weather and died. I just ordered a more mature one. I am going to treat it like I do with my succulents. But any advice? I know I haven't seen one in your collection and is there a reason. Thank you

As someone who became obsessed with plants and then got a job in a greenhouse, my best advice to those asking how often they should water is this: The more light the plant gets the more water it will need.
I can’t tell people exactly how often to water their new plant, but if they can understand that point it’s pretty simple to explain.
