Thanks for your thorough review. I'm contemplating getting into a community/university band after nearly 50 (!) years away from brass playing, and I think I'll pull the trigger on buying this one.

Great review. You can definitely hear a difference in the tone between the brass and plastic instruments. I have been a semi-pro player off and on for 20 years and have been considering getting a plastic horn for some of my jobs both for the look and less chance of damage. Definitely sticking with my Bach mouthpieces after seeing your review, the difference in tone between the brass and plastic mouthpieces is huge.

What a great review! Maybe I'm biased because I already knew I loved my Pbone! The manual says that the slide will eventually get less noisy if you keep wiping it off and keep it wet.

    I have one.
I'm an ex professional player (trumpet, but I doubled)
Best bang for your buck troms on the market.
    For beginners, they are unbeatable.

@@bonda3rd150 I can recommend the upgraded model with metal valves.
      It's a nice horn.
The earlier one with plastic valves has issues.

I love mine, and play it a LOT. The slide is great, light as a feather. I use my 6 1/2 AL with it. As you said, it sounds like a trombone. I wouldn't want it to be the only horn I have. I also have a Bach trigger horn and a '39 Olds Super. They each have their role.

I believe you've convinced me that a pBone + metal mouthpiece is the right decision for me.
I'm wanting to join a small community orchestra and I don't have a tremendous amount of money to spend. The point about fiberglass sousaphones is very good. I hadn't thought of that.

Thank you! Just the review I was looking for. I used to play trombone but haven't had one for years. I just found out these pBones existed a couple hours ago. Thinking of getting one for my studio. I'm thinking I could blend it with the digital samples I normally use for some extra color and presence. You hit all of the points I was wondering about.

This was helpful. I am considering purchasing one to serve as my private lesson horn.
My guess is never leave this horn in a hot car. (any horn for that matter).

Very interesting and fair. These plastic instruments have a valid place in a music program. I recently bought a used Conn Director trombone (as a beginner with a brass instrument), and now I wonder what it would be like to play a pBone (or any other trombone, for that matter).

I've been a pro player since 1969. I also taught ms and hs bands for 14 years. If I was still teaching I would go with pBones for beginners. I have a pBone next to my desk at home and play with it for grins and giggles. I hate the slide but for rough use and beginners it will be hard to beat.

You should do one on plastic trumpets. This has been very helpful and informative. As a semi professional always being amplified generally being the only horn the sound seems like it's like a solid body electric guitar. But that's when the pa is part of your sound.

    It occurred to me when you brought up the oil gumming issues and how water works but won't last long;
please consider trying glycerin, (USP Vegetable Glycerin) and also try food grade USP propylene glycol -not to be confused with the toxic 'Ethylene glycol'. The veggie glycerin may be too thick, so dilute with water. Mix and match, both are cheap. They are so safe they can be ingested, leaving only a sweet taste. Good luck :)
EDIT: I'm only referencing my knowledge of safe water-based lubricants, -I've never tried it as a metal-to-plastic oil alternative. -And all my instruments have strings. :)

I have a Pbone along with my other brass 'bones. I think you are overlooking one very important factor with the plastic instrument: it's hella fun to play! I will perform with the Pbone for Christmas shows, school events, etc. Whenever I want to add some color and stage presence. I would not play the Pbone for a symphonic performance because it's out of place there.
So yes, if you play the trombone, then you should have a Pbone in your collection. After all, it's not like they are expensive: you can easily buy one in every color for every day of the week :)

Yes. I just handed the pBone to our 4 year old and she had a tone of fun with it, and I wasn't spending the entire time going pleasedontdenttheslidepleasedontdenttheslidepleasedontdenttheslide
The 88H stays in case around her

Again man excellent informative presentation. I know you have at least a few students that learn something from you. Hey not even Jesus learned everyone of his students and the ones that got it didn't until after he left and he had to come back for a refresher lesson to get them over the hump.

I cringed when you laid the brass trombone flat on the table. Like the ability to do that without seriously damaging the horn is the reason I'm considering the pbone. You sounded more warmed up on pbone. First pass. Your recording device sounds better with the pbone and your intonation is better on the Yamaha. Although I don't like that model Yamaha. I think the intonation thing is something kind of a problem with some models of brass horn. Your description of what's going on is very helpful. Your tone sounds much better on the Yamaha with the plastic mouthpiece. I like the no dings part. My church style and working with kids the light and no dings I'm sold by your demonstration.

Do you have to change the lip movement, vibrate your lips, in a different way or was it the same for both?

Nice review. I have no real problem with the plastic trumpets myself, but I use the tiger plastic trumpet not the ptrumpet. I am a tuba/bass trombone player I have both the pbone and the pbone mini and they sound ok with the different groups I play in. What are your thoughts about tiger's new instruments the tuba, euphonium, and f attachment trombone made out of plastic as well. Have you started using the pbone in your band. I play in community bands with adult players using the pbone, but I have wanted to know how new trombone players or young players have taken to the instrument. Nice review again.

I think the tiger instruments are a little higher quality than the Pbones and instruments of the sort, but that's just what I've seen, Im getting both a tiger trombone and a tiger tuba soon, and (I realize that you posted this two years ago and probably already have seen/heard one, but) i'll make sure to tell you what I think about it.

There is a difference but on you I like your sound much better on the pbone. However it's definitely a place and time. In Rythm and blues or jazz the pbone sounds seems more appropriate. Marching or classical etc, brass.

I'm regretting my decision to buy a pbone because you can buy a cheap brass instrument on amazon for the same price as a pbone and a metal mouth piece. That being said its an amazing practice instrument and my arms dont get tired when I play it . The result is i'm practicing for longer and have better quality practice because my arms don't hurt. I sit around all day and mess with my pbone. It plays like a trombone and when its blind and your practicing people dont know the difference.

How was the slide? Yes, the sound is very annoying, but is the action as smooth as a premium brass trombone's slide?

not as good as a brass slide, but doesn't dent

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; (2peter2:4) - Because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. (Acts17:31) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (‭‭John‬ ‭3‬‬:‭16-17‬) Jesus loves you, he’s waiting for you to repent and put your faith and trust in Him :)
