Nice review. Thanks for the heads up on that oil. I’ve been playing P trumpet primarily for busking for the past year and I’m very happy with it. The way I got around the sticky valve issue was I had P trumpet send me some extra strong springs. Additionally I keep my valves dry. After every gig I remove the pistons and leave them and the horn dry disassembled overnight. Works wonders. PS Love those flames you put on your horn

Not a brass player but a tradesman - on nylon and plastic parts one doesn't use petroleum based lubricants otherwise they will squeek and jam. One uses vegetable based oils. Not say the manufacturers hadn't thought of this but something is not working. Which vegetable oil? usually what's in the cooking cupboard.

I think he said plant based, I need to listen again for the brand, if he mentioned it.

I have this thing for fun. Basically it's a toy that can be musical in casual settings.

I'm glad I've found this video. I'll be getting a ptrumpet for my birthday in a few weeks or so to play around with and I've heard about the valves being an issue. I'll have to order that oil!

Thanks for this review, I appreciate the tip about plant based oil. And I appreciate your perspective as a band director about when to use an instrument like this, and when NOT to use it.

I know nothing, but that's never stopped me. My speculation is water has lower viscosity than any oil. A tiny amount of dishwashing soap like Dawn in the water will reduce surface tension and make the water more slippery with plastic valves than oil on metal. Nice paint job, it looks great. Another trial would be water & oil ( mineral or vegetable oil, walnut oil is lowest viscosity ) emulsion without any soap or detergent.

I see that pBone is coming out with a pTrumpet hytech with brass valves(?) that is supposed to address some of the issues with the all plastic valve pTrumpet

I had massive problems with the stuck valves (PCornet which uses the same valve system as the PTrumpet). I tried a lot of different kind of lubrication including trumpet valve oils, weapon oil, plant oils such as peanut, olive or canola.
Finally: Baby oil does the job (Penaten brand).
Clean the valves in warm water and detergent. Rinse it and apply the baby oil with a cloth.
The PTrumpet valves will never work as good as metal valves (the springs are way to weak, too) but I use the PCornet for an always around and quick access practicing tool to improve my embouchure.
For that it is perfect because it is light, rigid and does not mind some beating.

Good to know! I've been wanting to get one of their cornets.

I tried a few oils, but finally was told don't use any oil and it's been better. The problem is I have an early horn, so I might repurchase a newer model, or a new model. They're only $150.00, right?

I'm curious if the berp oil works on the pBone. I know the vids a bit old, but maybe you'll happen to see this.

For us band directors, having a ptrumpet sitting on a stand next to our podiums for demonstrations of "Go Tell Aunt Rhodie" is fine. I wouldn't expect a pro to use it. Comparing your pro horn with a ptrumpet is obviously unfair. I have a Buffet R13 that I use for gigs, but I used a garage sale $10 clarinet for college marching band. It did me well for four years. that being said, I do know some directors who buy ptrumpets for beginning band or for trumpet-doublers in their programs; it is cheap enough and durable enough to have some used in those capacities...

    • @stephenschraedel9517
      @stephenschraedel9517 Рік тому

A lot of pros do use them. Not exclusively, but for fun and for a novelty, and for a sound they want for a few tunes, but do you use your flugel horn for every gig? I don't. Even in music, it's like in one out of every 50 or 100 songs that calls for a flugel.
It's interesting how when something newer comes along, there is always segment of people who shoot it down. Not you, but you know what I mean, some do. "It's not the real thing. It'll never work." (Eyore-isms) I've decided that it's worth experimenting upon the new things. Bass trumpets and 4 valve trumpets are becoming more common. What if there was a 6 valve trumpet in the future, one that cut the pipe another 5 or 7 inches, so that it could now have 5 octaves for almost any player, including the lower range with the extra valves? Wouldn't that be awesome? I think it would be incredible. You could fit out almost an entire brass band with all trumpets. A true bugle corp. Ha Ha

Question, you're showing that you're using the #1 light viscosity oil.
Have you tried the #2 medium or #3 heavy oil on those same plastic valves?

Plastic is fantastic, but they are WORK to play and get a true trumpet sound out. You're spot on about plastic acoustics @6:20. Now, for me, as a solo jazz artists, the warmer, more muted sound is great for small club playing. However, when I've got to play lead and start screaming above high G, It's WORK! I've learned to compensate by careful mouthpiece choice to get a brighter sound to compensate. But it takes much more effort to get that 'sizzle' sound than it does on even a cheap Mendini level brass horn.

      Thanks for the prompt response!
I tried slide cream. It was terrible, but then I just kept removing a bit at a time with a wet cloth and added some water. It ended up being pretty okay.
I'm fairly pleased now. I might eventually try though oil.

Yes, the valve oil he held up to the camera was BERP BIOOIL #1 Light Viscosity Blue label. #2 Medium Viscosity is Yellow label. #3 Heavy Viscosity is Green label.
I have had a purple pTrumpet (2.0 model, I have verified) for 6 months now (since June 12, 2020) and played it dry (no valve oil), hoping pistons would settle into valve casings and work better.
2nd, but especially 3rd pistons would stick badly. I ordered F.E. Olds new old stock piston springs that were longer and stronger than the original piston springs in pTrumpet. That helped decrease the stickiness, but not enough.
Then I saw this pTrumpet review, with Band Director showing BERP BIOOIL #1 Light viscosity Blue label that fixed piston stickiness.
Before I will decide to order the BERP BIOOIL Sample Pack, with all 3 viscosities in ½ oz. bottles, I have tried my BiNaK 495 valve oil (mineral oil based and organic), but that didn't work very long, so I tried my Alisyn valve slide rotor oil (a full synthetic oil of thick viscosity), and that has worked great, so far!
I like my purple pTrumpet much better, now that pistons don't stick anymore, with Alisyn oil!
I am sure I will order BERP BIOOIL very soon!
I will continue using Alisyn oil for a while, until I just must have the BERP BIOOIL sample pack, if only just to try!

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; (2peter2:4) - Because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead. (Acts17:31) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (‭‭John‬ ‭3‬‬:‭16-17‬) Jesus loves you, he’s waiting for you to repent and put your faith and trust in Him :)
