HAHAHa been detailing a 99 4runner I bought with about 275k miles. Rims have not been touched in at least 10 years. Same as you ... tried the normal methods and the rims were clean but had a rough-to-the-touch film of break dust on the rim insets. Saw this vid last night so, today, I try it. WOW!! Put a ligh coat on the entire rim being sure I get all the recessed areas. Give it 15 minutes. EVERYTHING WIPES OFF! ALL DUST OFF and I did't even have to use the brush. I used clean MF towels and wiped off without water. Then I used Mcguires hybrid caramic spray wax as a finish. The rims look outstanding. Do be careful of overspray, not in the sun, and it do stink strong. Just learned a safe, easy way to remove baked-on dust and grime. Appreciate it.
Been using oven cleaner for years. I shared it with some detail buddies and they bashed me for it lol. I still use it but I keep my secrets to myself 🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
you shouldn't use oven cleaner to often on your wheels, being that most wheels that it will be used on are aluminum the oven cleaner can cause pitting like if you use it once to restore them after you buy a beat up car it should be fine as long as you keep up with the cleaning. just be wary of using oven cleaner on aluminum wheels.
LsxMatt i tryed oven cleaner on the wheel's of my 2003 chevy truck yesterday and they cleaned up really nice.I did as you showed us and iam very pleased thank you.
When I detailed at a dealership, we used Technicians Choice detailing supplies for the interior & exterior. Their citrus degreaser always worked well and I definitely recommend it
I’m not a detailer but the Griot’s wheel cleaner worked great for me, 99 F150, neglected wheels. Loosened grime & followed with brush but no heavy scrubbing. May be better stuff out there but I was pleased.
This is great for doing it on the cheap and not breaking the bank... BUT... Aluminum/Wheel Brightener would clean that and more with NO touching. 1. Spray wheel brightener on the wheel. 2. Wait for 30 to 45 sec. 3. Rinse off. Try Poorboy's World Spray&Rinse, Meguiar's Wheel Brightener
Just tried it, works fine on wheels that I planned to paint all over. They´re good to go now, so I´ll paint them next year (or so) . I love procrastinating :)
I need to snag me some oven cleaner for my civic wheels! they've got the most stubborn baked on brake dust that won't come off with even the best type of cleaner!
I have a Land Rover that is terrible with brake dust. Ever time I wash it, I spray the wheels with Simple Green and let it soak for 15 minutes or so. Washes clean with no scrubbing. I will be swapping out the pad and rotors with ceramics.
Easy Off is all I use but it's highly alkaline so you need to neutralize it with some vinegar/water mix afterward. It will corrode parts just like an acid would.
Easy off oven cleaner is old old school my day used it when I was a kid so I've used it as well I just sprays it on uses a small wire brush tires also come really clean only thing is you really needs to rinse every thing off really good !! To dilute the acid in over cleaner other then that awesome way clean rims and tires
Great show! I was wondering, did you attempt to just spray off the cleaner before you brushed it? Would be nice to think brushing isn't necessary with the right nozzle. Also, which type of OC did you use? They make a few different ones, not knowing if it even matters.
Garrett Reaves thank you! Someone else noticed that as well! I don’t understand why it’s so hard for tire techs to balance wheels correctly. I work in a shop and see this shit daily even from my own guys.
Finally someone actually did a video with real dirty wheel. Should of only cleaned 1 to try other products. Everyone else cleaning wheels I can clean with a microfiber
I got the same trim and color 300k miles running strong but has a hard start. I have no clue what it could be. I got a new battery, starter, and fuel pump 😭
I used one of those harbor freight dual filter respirators. Not really necessary especially being its outdoors, but when your right up close it’s not a bad idea.
It took 3 passes, but i used mags wheel brightener and a magic eraser to take off some really bad break dust (rims were completely black in the spokes). I tried the same oven cleaner you did and it couldnt cut it, not sure why. Burns your skin good though 😔
2014 sprinter , OEM painted and clear coat, inner pockets never cleaned, , mild oven cleaner, let set for 10 minutes used BRASS brush, cause stiff nylon didnt do it
BRUH? that's the ultimate engine cleaner. U should do a video about the city where u live maybe show the world what new York has to offer and show some food from there and take pictures with ur Camaro that would be a kool video
Did you ever find a good place to buy replacement center caps? I have the exact same ones you have and they need replacing but they are ridiculously extensive. GM part 15766002.
Any degreaser, lacquer thinner 220 or solvents 325 or 365 careful with thinners though. It will take off clear coats if you put pressure or scrub to long.
I wouldn't use the Oven Cleaner on bare aluminum wheels... but, on a painted/clear coated one, it's ok. I'll bet the oven cleaner caused the coloration/pitting appearance you found after the cleaning... if it was working on bare aluminum exposed by scratches/scrapes. They did purdy up nicely, however.
There is the greasers out there once you spray them you don’t have to scrub what is the purpose then using a degree so if you have to put a lot of elbow grease like you’re doing. I have a degreaser MW two that I sell to my customers and they don’t have to scrub the wheels or the rims I will say this though do not let it sit longer than 30 seconds once you spray it 30 seconds later use a pressure washer and they will come out looking like they were brand new that is my guarantee to all my customers. AndW-2 is not sold in stores it is my special formula that I came up with I can sell you a 55 gallon drum and you can bottle it and sell it to many people for $20 a gallon and trust me you will get that money because it removes everything even cleans up motors transmissions ovens stoves you name it but the problem is you have to pay the shipping to your location which would probably be $150-$200 but it’s well worth it you don’t have to scrub nothing sprayed on spray it off and that work is done. God bless you my brothers and sisters don’t forget Jesus Christ is coming very soon so repent while you can still find Jesus Christ in heaven because when he gets here to earth it’s too late you will be judged with all the evil doers and the beast the devil himself and his evil angels repeat my brothers and sisters I want to see you in heaven with me and all the other great people of the world don’t get left behind repent accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior and believe that he accepted all the sins of the world and ROZE in the third day. ✝️✝️✝️
Hey dude Love how the truck is coming along As for degreasers I love super clean But gunk multi purpose cleaner works better and when you add water to it It is like adding steroids!!!!! Also mothers wheel cleaner is the best out of all the products I use. I spray it on a few minutes before I go through the wash. Lots of continued luck with it. And can’t wait for more videos
Use DAWN blue dishwash soap and water in a spray bottle. Scrub with steelwool #0001. Way more easy no chemicals involved. Only in between the spokes and back of wheel. Not painted surfaces. Works well with chrome too.
The main ingredient in both SuperClean and oven cleaner is sodium hydroxide (lye), it's just a stronger concentration in oven cleaner. The problem with using it on aluminum wheels is that anyplace that it penetrates the clear coat it will attack the aluminum almost instantly oxidizing and pitting it, and I wouldn't be surprised if you left it on the clear long enough if it broke down the clear coat also, I'm pretty sure that's what you were seeing where they where badly oxidized, that probably wasn't there or at least wasn't as bad before you started.
Iron x is 22-29.99 in amazon n it’s no effort needed to remove it n it won’t scratch up the rims ...spray it n in 3-5 min till it’s purple or gold color n rinse
I know what you mean, It seems it can sometimes leave the wheel hazy and cloudy. I worked really quickly with it, and pre cleaned the wheels, so maybe that helped.
I know a lot easier and quicker way to make them shine like new. Buy 0000 steel wool. It's real fine steel and won't scratch or damage any metal chrome or any rims. A bag of like 8 is only 4 dollars at home depot or Lowe's.
Oven cleaner is crazy bad for waterways and soil. There are some much better alternatives SPECIFICALLY FOR CARS: Royal Brown, Iron particle remover Like Adams or Nanoskin, spray on tar remover. All of these will need some scrubbing with a soft detail brush(toothbrush) . You'll use a LOT LESS than the oven cleaner too.
This truck is really coming along. Keep watching for upcoming videos if you're a sucker for super satisfying cleaning like me XD
I would have pulled the rims/tires off the car and cleaned inside of rims because I would notice it. LOL
HAHAHa been detailing a 99 4runner I bought with about 275k miles. Rims have not been touched in at least 10 years. If you wanna save your trigger finger, mix the cleaner in a bug sprayer. We used to own a detail business and it's a huge time saver
you shouldn't use oven cleaner to often on your wheels, being that most wheels that it will be used on are aluminum the oven cleaner can cause pitting like if you use it once to restore them after you buy a beat up car it should be fine as long as you keep up with the cleaning. just be wary of using oven cleaner on aluminum wheels.
What’s pitting
LsxMatt i tryed oven cleaner on the wheel's of my 2003 chevy truck yesterday and they cleaned up really nice.I did as you showed us and iam very pleased thank you.
Clean rims makes a huge difference on the look of a car
Exactly, same for us. Dirty sneakers v.s. Dress shoes
When I detailed at a dealership, we used Technicians Choice detailing supplies for the interior & exterior. Their citrus degreaser always worked well and I definitely recommend it
Hadn't heard of using oven cleaner before, but guess what I am using next time!!! Great hack...TFS!!!
WayToSon dont use it, itll pit your wheels... its ok once but its still not a good idea. Use an actual wheel cleaner
I’m not a detailer but the Griot’s wheel cleaner worked great for me, 99 F150, neglected wheels. Loosened grime & followed with brush but no heavy scrubbing.
May be better stuff out there but I was pleased.

I need to snag me some oven cleaner for my civic wheels! they've got the most stubborn baked on brake dust that won't come off with even the best type of cleaner!
Yea that super clean works wonders .I thought a set of wheels where ruined with brake dust .But came out clean as new .
Good job Matt 👍 you did great and now I know what to do if I can't get my wheels clean !
Thanks for sharing !! Seen a lot of you tube vids of people using it as a degreaser 👍🏻
I use motorcycle chain degreaser for the rims. Takes it right off.
I use the Dollar Tree oven cleaner to clean my engine. Looks and works the same for a $1.
Brown Royal is the gold standard for brake dust.
Meguiars wheel brightener would have worked good also. Superclean is definitely good on tires.
You’ve just gotten a new subscriber
Keep up the good videos
Ayyy man keep the videos up I enjoy watching.... im a owner of a Tahoe and Love how u care for your truck 👍
Oven cleaner works great I'm trying that right away nice job my man's 💪 💪 💪 ☝
Great show! I was wondering, did you attempt to just spray off the cleaner before you brushed it? Would be nice to think brushing isn't necessary with the right nozzle. Also, which type of OC did you use? They make a few different ones, not knowing if it even matters.
Looks great, cant wait to see what it looks like after clay & buff
Great trick I'll definitely try oven cleaner in the future
Oven cleaner on the wheel well and engine bay works too
dream truck right here
Wheels look great for 15 years old thanks for the tip.
Now I know what I’m gonna be doing this upcoming spring to my Z71 Suburban wheels! Great video and just subscribed to your channel!
If you're going to clear coat the wheels I use brake cleaner or the over cleaner too. Nice work Matt, keep up the great work/info/how to videos.
I love these vids on this truck, I have the same one but it’s a GMC SLT but the same year and color... thanks for all the tips!
Superclean or purple power is good because its cheap and can be cut
You've done a great job on your Tahoe
I used it to clean old chrome wire wheels. Definitely the easiest method I know.
Can most of if not all your upgrades work for a 04 Yukon?
Awesome video brotha! Your Tahoe looks just like My 2004..
Ive used lime away on caked on brake dust on my motorcycle rims where heavy degreaser didnt do jack $%#!.
In case you didn't know, your wheels are counter balanced. All of the wheel weights should be touching. I would reccomend getting them re balanced
I used awesome oven cleaner and it was supurb,I have tried a lot of other stuff but nothing seemed to work as great as oven cleaner
*Eagle1* works awesome for cleaning up aluminum parts as well.
Have you ever used the Polish T- cut. It's cheap in the uk and after you have washed the wheel in the normal way it gets rid of any baked on dust.
WOW! never thought of oven cleaner. looks like it diden't do any "damage" to the aluminium rims either. Will have to try. Thanks
U should use simply green all purpose cleaner 2 take off those tough stains & use a steamer after
I use Flash's Brown Royal wheel cleaner. Pretty much spray it and rinse, it's that powerful.
Works great as engine cleaner too just dont let it sit too long will take off paint....
I got the same trim and color 300k miles running strong but has a hard start. I have no clue what it could be. I got a new battery, starter, and fuel pump 😭
I use a magic eraser and a clay bar to clean hammered wheels. Probably slower than chemicals though
I had these wheels on my 95, they were a huge pain too keep clean
Looking good 💪😎keep it cheap fixes perfect 👌
Now, is there a way to keep brake dust from forming? Is there any type of pads that don’t make as much dust?
ceramics
What kinda mask should be used using over cleaner?
I used one of those harbor freight dual filter respirators. Not really necessary especially being its outdoors, but when your right up close it’s not a bad idea.
It took 3 passes, but i used mags wheel brightener and a magic eraser to take off some really bad break dust (rims were completely black in the spokes). I tried the same oven cleaner you did and it couldnt cut it, not sure why. Burns your skin good though 😔
2014 sprinter , OEM painted and clear coat, inner pockets never cleaned, , mild oven cleaner, let set for 10 minutes used BRASS brush, cause stiff nylon didnt do it
Is that a regular bristle brush?
Cleaned some cylinder heads up with oven cleaner. Like you said in another comment. Can’t let it stay on too long with aluminum.
SOS pads work real good
Will definitely be trying that out
BRUH? that's the ultimate engine cleaner. U should do a video about the city where u live maybe show the world what new York has to offer and show some food from there and take pictures with ur Camaro that would be a kool video
Thanks for the tip bud
Did you ever find a good place to buy replacement center caps? I have the exact same ones you have and they need replacing but they are ridiculously extensive. GM part 15766002.
Came out nice.
LsxMatt gets distracted when a deer runs by like a dog with a squirrel.
Any degreaser, lacquer thinner 220 or solvents 325 or 365 careful with thinners though. It will take off clear coats if you put pressure or scrub to long.

I hate cleaning wheels. It's a pain. Nice job
I'll try using oven cleaner on mine. Mine starting to crust up with brake dust too

Looks good.
Use a wheel acid 10:1 , works great but spray and hit with water asap
Look into Iron X by CarPro.
How much and how do we know it will take off the baked on brake dust that won't come off
Good to know regarding the Easy Off Oven cleaner for the wheels. I wonder if brake cleaner would do the same? It works so well on everything else. LOL
It probably would, but brake cleaner will most likely ruin the finish.
I used brown royal wheel cleaner it’s perfect 👌🏻 wheel cleaner for heavy brake dust
I have seen videos on brown royal you can dilute it also right it works very good or not I want to get me some
should i waste my time washing my car while it might snow and currently ice and snow every where?
You sound like Ray Romano!
Do those z71 wheels come with TPS sensors?
Yea they have tpms
Ok thanks I have them on a 04 escalade that I got. I’m trying to get the “service tire monitor” fixed. Did you fix you’re yet?
what camera do you use? Gopro or camcorder?
I have an iphone 11 pro.
Get the aircraft peeler basecoat and clearcoat removal.
Hey dude
Love how the truck is coming along
As for degreasers I love super clean
But gunk multi purpose cleaner works better and when you add water to it
It is like adding steroids!!!!!
Works well with chrome too.
steel wool will take off paint
I just use windex for my chrome steel rims of my 01 silverado.
Wheel acid works the best no scrubbing
Still done a good job! Just several steps
The main ingredient in both SuperClean and oven cleaner is sodium hydroxide (lye), it's just a stronger concentration in oven cleaner.

Confused some say use oven cleaner others say dont use it.
blue toilet bowl cleaner will take about anything off, but water it down and get it off pretty quick.
I use mothers mag and wheel polish .
I will try that.
Use Meguiars wheel brightener. It eats brake dust.
Iron x is 22-29.99 in amazon n it’s no effort needed to remove it n it won’t scratch up the rims ...spray it n in 3-5 min till it’s purple or gold color n rinse
N wash normal with no brushes
Oven cleaner will work as well buddy.
Every time I've seen easy off touch bare aluminum, it makes a mess of it. I'm glad it worked so well. I would need afraid to use it
I know what you mean, It seems it can sometimes leave the wheel hazy and cloudy. I worked really quickly with it, and pre cleaned the wheels, so maybe that helped.
youre welcome

Chemical guys Diablo wheel gel works well for me.

Acid wheel mag
