    My 600-lb Life is an American reality television series that has aired on the TLC television network since 2012. Each episode follows a year in the life of morbidly obese individuals, who usually begin the episode weighing at least 600 pounds (270 kg), and documents their attempts to reduce their weight to a healthy level. Update episodes, called "Where Are They Now?", feature one or more previous patients, picking up a year or more after their original episodes aired.
    Patients are placed under the care of Iranian-American Houston surgeon Younan Nowzaradan (often referred to as simply "Dr. Now"), who first has them attempt losing weight on their own by following a strict diet, and then depending on the patient's progress may offer gastric bypass surgery or sleeve gastrectomy to further assist in weight loss.

    You cannot substitute food with real happiness, you end up feeling guilty one way or another. Once I realised this, I changed my eating habits. I accepted my loneiness and stopped fighting it. I made it my mission to do things that makes me laugh or doing things that I get enjoyment from (apart from food). The weight has gone, so has the loneiness. It took time and hard work and I am not saying it was easy but it was worth it. Now, I love going out on my mobility scooters, Tank Girl and Hardly Davidson, taking pictures and meeting people. 🌹

      I'm not a food addict, but I have other addictions. You really have to get real with yourself and make changes to your life, which is super hard. I had to cut off my parents and now I'm going through trauma therapy (EMDR). Things are starting to get easier. I wish it were mandatory for all these people to go through therapy, but our society doesn't have enough resources, I think.

When you next e manipulative , deceitful , belligerent, refuse to follow the prescribed diet and medications, any form of therapy, and manipulate, badger and blackmail family and friends into bringing you food, you can be kicked out. It’s called “ against medical advice “ and it is now being applied in many ways. After nursing for 35 years, it’s not used enough .

    What always gets me with the "It's my LAST CHANCE to EVER eat food again, in my ENTIRE LIFE!" gigalard that then proceed to body slam 9000 calories before going to see Dr. Now... is how NONE of them seem to be able to comprehend calories tbh... Like, you CAN eat a burger, no problem. Like: Okay, that burger is 600 calories... so, you can eat 600 more today AFTER the burger. Easy. But nope! It's either ONLY porrige every single meal for the rest of your life, or 9000 calories per day. NOTHING in between.

    • @jb6712
      @jb6712 Місяць тому

      It's very well known that those who weigh as much as a Fiat, or a SMART car (and some outweigh those cute little things!) often don't even realize they're consuming in excess of 10,000 calories a day. Even if they're told, it doesn't sink in.
      It's like a very poor person trying to comprehend how much money a million dollars is; they have nothing to compare it to, not having had much money ever in their life, so the number is too large to grasp.
      It's the same for those who have no idea they should be down to around 1,500 to 2,000 cals a day, depending on height, age, bone structure, activity level, and a few other factors. That number means nothing to them, just as the greater than 10,000 cals means nothing.

    Doesn’t the hospital have a dietitian that controls what the patient is eating?

    • @Itried20takennames
      @Itried20takennames 10 місяців тому +8

      A dietician can advise, but can’t control. Unless you are in prison, no one can restrict another adults food choices. The hospital can offer and recommend a low calorie diet, but can’t force people to order it, or pull forbidden food from people’s hands, or frisk visitors for contraband, search skin folds, have 3 shifts a day of full-time staff to do nothing but watch one patient, etc. A legally competent adult has a right to refuse medical advice, even if their choices are harmful.
      But even more, let’s say you could lock a person in a room and force them to follow a diet and lose weight. If they don’t learn to regulate themselves, they will regain within weeks of getting out….so the benefit is what? In the end, the person has to be the one to control and follow a diet.

    • @Patricia-kh3bg

      The patient has to agree to a reduced calorie diet and sign a piece of paper stating that unbelievably.

    • @jb6712
      @jb6712 Місяць тому +1

      Within the contract the patients sign, Dr. Now tells the hospital staff via his written orders what the patient can have. However, the dieticians are NOT the "food police," they are not responsible for what food the patient stuffs into their big mouths, and they're extremely limited as to what they can do.
      Not even Dr. Now can enforce what extra food the patient sneaks in, but he can, and has, cancelled the contract on people for their breech, and then the patient is responsible for all the costs incurred to that time.

    • @jb6712
      @jb6712 Місяць тому

      @@Patricia-kh3bg They don't sign a "piece of paper;" there is an entire legal contract that involves a great deal more than just a piece of paper. And if the patient is so foolish as to quit the program, then the contract is cancelled, and the person is fully responsible for all the costs they incurred to that date. It's been shown at least once, although I don't know which episode nor which patient, having seen only about ten minutes of that foolish person's nonsense.

      There's a soda on the market, very good, called Zevia. No sugar, no calories, wonderful flavors, including ginger root beer (my fave), ginger ale, cola, cherry, and about four others. It's sweetened with stevia, something I normally don't like, but this soda is so delicious, I'll drink it occasionally, and it satisfies my desire for something sweet without spiking my blood sugar, and without causing cravings. I also drink lots of sparkling water---no calories, lots of different flavors available, no sugar of any kind (there is a very slight sweetness to it, but I've never found out what it's from). But you probably know all that, so I may have blathered on for nothing.

    Just like a drug addict, she wants to get one more ‘hit’ from food. It’s not something anyone should put her down for. It’s normal addiction behavior. No matter what she looks like to the world. I had Ana and later Bulimia. Before I was treated, I ate a huge meal, and purged before I saw a doctor that basically gave me a drug that wouldn’t allow me to purge anymore. But I still binge eat, sometimes. I’ve had to train my body to not allow me to get overly full.
    All eating disorders may not look the same, but they’re just as important as someone binge eating with what seems like a lot of enablers present. Sigh.
