At 4:50 I said that the reading of 1016 was probably erroneous. I'm wearing earplugs and I couldn't hear the obvious lack of power. That round was almost certainly defective. It has been suggested that some other type of ammo got mixed up with the mini mags. In this case the types of ammo I was using look very different and it would have been obvious when I was loading the mag so no, that didn't happen. So that shot was taken out of the computation for mean velocity, but it might tell us something about quality control.
@OWEN FLORENCE Most of the sound is the propellant in the cartridge combusting to launch the projectile. The underpowered round had less powder going off.
In my experience shooting Mini Mags, I get one weak round out of every 60 to 70 rounds. So when you mentioned Mini Mags, the first thing that came to mind was "Is he going to get one?"
Having worked at CCI, there is no production difference between Green Tag and Standard Velocity 22lr. The difference is determined by quality control statistics. Samples are taken continuously of all production ammo. The samples are fired under QA department controls. If specifications drift away from quality standards production stops until adjustments are made. Some production lots show exceptional accuracy and those could be designated Green Tag. So it’s the same round, but a statistically superior batch.
Oh, I said above that a superior lot of 22lr “could be” labelled Green Tag. Only if the Sales department has orders for Green Tag. If they don’t, that straight A ammo will be labelled Standard Velocity just like the rest.
@@jvmccracken simple economics.
My experience exactly!! I've even taken CCI SV and weighed each round, separating them out by weight to use in matches. (I achieved a High Master rating doing this) Cheaper than GT that way and the accuracy in my guns was equal to the GT that I tested numerous times. Depending upon the level of accuracy desired, the SV works great in most guns. Each gun is ammo sensitive and may not shoot the same ammo as others in your collection. Best bet is to buy all the different types of 22 ammo available at the time and test in your own gun(s) to determine which is the most accurate for your purposes. Nearly all of it will maintain "minute of squirrel", but for competition shooting, go with the most accurate (if you can find it!)!
Thanks for the information! I was told that part of what makes match grade ammo is that the likely hood of duds, like the minimag that was well slower than the others was much lower which sort of jives with your explanation.

The way this ammo shortage keeps dragging on, I’m half expecting Paul to have to resort to bayonet drills and archery just to have some reason to destroy meat targets.

And bullet proof log cabins.
And let's not forget the icing on the cake.... tannerite.
I enjoy his Dutch oven holiday specials too.
@Zoomer Waffen You kidding me? We've seen several major sources of unrest in this country and record firearm sales. The reason why everything is so rare is because there are more firearm owners and more reasons to buy as much ammo as you can than ever before!
Dude, even if all of a sudden ammo become plentiful again tomorrow, I still want to see bayonet drills from Paul.
Just when i thought - man, its been ages since the last Paul Harrel video
That’s so funny! It feels like every time I randomly go back and binge his videos he’s suddenly active and uploading again it’s amazing!
I've been worried sick about him
@@bobbylee7801 to be honest i was getting a bit worried myself. Its laughable, ofcourse, that we were worrying about a man who shoots bulls eye from a bed he brought to the range.
It's hard to get ammo, that's probably why
Yep. He posted a bit ago there was an issue.

Paul's had that .22 ammo stashed in his shooting jacket since 1982.
The labels aren't that old
Nope. Paul uses sheer force of will to make his jacket pockets produce ammo out of nothingness. ;)
I must agree - of course they were stashed in his jacket between the .17HMR and the .22mag, followed by 19 numerically sorted calibers .
The "boring part with the chronograph" is like ASMR for gun nuts.

Apologies, and you are most likely on target.
I'm just thankful that I've been reloading since the 90s and saved brass as well as stockpiled components (modestly) over the years. It's a strange sensation to watch them go down.
@Turk February the manufacturers will catch up with the hoarders soon enough. It's probably going to be like the opposite of gamestop soon, all the damn hoarders trying be middlemen are gonna be stuck with their warehouse full of ammo and in store prices will drop wayyy down because the manufacturers are all stepping it up.
I can't believe Paul loves us enough to spend $7000 on some ammo to entertain us. He's the GunTuber GOAT.
I love how the snow affects the audio, deadening the sound.
The difference is subsonic versus supersonic ammo
Actually the sound travels farther in cold weather conditions.

You got the start of a tune there, canoestothemoon
That wasn’t a bad reading on the mini mag. It wasn’t loaded correctly . You can tell it doesn’t break the sound barrier like the other mini mag shots did.
Agreed. The sound was quite clearly off.
I was looking for this comment. Noticed that too.
@@goodbyemr.anderson5065 the speed of sound is roughly 1125 FPS. So basically all high velocity 22LR ammo breaks the sound barrier out of a 16” barrel mini mags being one of them.
I noticed it as well, it wasn't nearly as loud as the rest of the mini mag ammo. Paul probably didn't notice because he was wearing hearing protection
I concur, that shot sounded like an under loaded round.
People, don't exit when you see the credits. There is more!
'Bout to leave, myself, when I noticed all the extra time at the end. 😊

Why do I find Paul’s chronograph tests almost hypnotically relaxing?
I hate them!

I've literally fallen asleep during the chrono tests in previous videos... the man has a gift.
Especially when starts counting the numbers and says - now you feel very sleepy..

I could definitely hear the difference in that mini mag shot it was way quieter
Yeah i think it was a true reading, the bullet probably didnt break the sound barrier so it was a lot quieter
It definitely didn't surpass the sound barrier, because you can't hear it echo. That makes me think the chronograph might've been right.

appreciate the thoroughness. Also like the new training facility.
It is highly unlikely you will get "match" accuracy unless your rifle has a tight "match" chamber. Shooting match ammo in a sporting chamber usually only shows modest improvement.
There are too many variables in accuracy to equate match with accuracy in .22 ammunition. Instead, I would like to know how many flyers and duds should I expect per 1000 rounds.
Excellent video! Time spent well and I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us!
Listening to you explain stuff is cathartic. Stay well.
That is why I stick with the Mini Mags, and they feed in all of my semi autos.
Match ammo which tends to just be higher quality ammo like anything cci is so much better with match chamber or at least a bentz chamber. Green tag is just a good batch. So green tag with a match chamber is quite accurate.
Another video with top shelf content. Thank you for your consistency. Cheers Paul.
Thank-you for wearing the hat. I had a hat just like it in 1965. I wore it everywhere. It was my Gomer hat. I was 13 and got it at an archery store. Glad goofs are still with us.
I think a more valid comparison would be the ammunition being shot out of more "competitive" or "target" firearms. They will have tighter chambers and better barrels than firearms designed to eat anything and you will get more out of the ammunition

Glad to see this video, Paul; thank you. A tangential comment follows:
My first rifle was a Remington Rolling Block in .22. It was a great single shot: utterly safe and reliable, and quite accurate for a kid in his pre-teen years. But, when I was fourteen, I graduated to a Marlin Model 50. It was just superb, I had so much fun plinking with it, shooting cans and pine cones, often appear targets and occasionally vermin around an old farmstead in Vermont. Many years later - upon returning from an 18 month assignment in the Pacific - I learned that my mother (in one of necessary, periodic cleaning binges) had given that Marlin away to our church’s Scout troop. I miss it to today, it was a great lever action pinker. .
I love your videos, the way you deliver information is clear and effectivly delivered and your efforts to deliver more than just a subjective opinion are excellent. Thanks for your efforts and I wish you well on getting to the million subs.
Yesterday, I found loads of Mini Mags in a tiny rural hardware store near my house.. I felt like a lottery winner because I haven't found Mini Mags in stock since the "beer" situation. My 10/22 performs best with it compared to the Winchesters and Armscors I was forced to use because of availability.
Those Winchester Super X rounds in the red plastic boxes had the worst percentage of duds I've ever seen when I tried them a year and a half ago. 3 out of 25 according to my records.
@@cconley3315 Winchester 22 hollow points were a letdown. Shot 300 of them and they were not only less accurate but pretty jammy compared to others. Quality control isn't there for me either.

Hey Paul, I think you're missing one thing here...You can probably expect the green tag to always be that good, and you can expect the normal to be that good most of the time. But when there are consistency issues in the manufacturing process, those rounds will not end up in the green tag bucket.
