  • 2021-2023 F150 2.7 EcoBoost Oil & Filter Change
The EcoBoost Ford F150 2.7 oil change is a simple procedure that can be easily done by anyone. With a unconventional plastic oil drain plug that you can remove by hand and a cartridge style oil filter, the oil change is different by no harder than any other. The cartridge style oil filter minimizes any mess from oil spilling out of the oil filter while the plastic oil drain plug is much easier to remove than typical style however the larger bore causes the oil to push out further and with more force than other drain plugs. This article is specific to 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 model year F150 trucks equipped with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine.
    Tools Needed:
27mm socket, extension (6”+) and ratchet for the oil filter housing
8mm socket and ratchet for the lower engine cover
    O ring pick
    Funnel
Oil drain pan with at least 6 quart capacity
    Shop rags or towels
    Parts needed:
Engine oil filter: Motorcraft FL2062 or equivalent aftermarket part
    Amazon Link
    amzn.to/3YmpFay
Engine oil: 5W30 engine oil (6.0 quart capacity)
    Amazon Link
    amzn.to/3BRpU4w
Optional - Engine oil drain plug (only needed if it is found to be damaged or if oil is leaking past the O ring)

This is the 3rd time I changed the oil on my 2020 2.7. The oil filter always came out with the filter housing as it did this last time. However when I placed the filter in the housing this time I couldn’t get the housing to screw in. Watching your vid you put the filter in the engine then screwed the housing on and it worked perfect for me also when I did it your way. You saved a headache. Thank you so much great job.

Awesome video, they make a after market drain plug to replace that plastic plug and it’s less messy. Opening the plastic cap slowly like you mentioned does prevent a big mess as well. 100% synthetics is definitely the way to go! 🤙🏽

Don’t forget, Reset the oil minder percentage on the dash readout screen. Touch menu scroll down - settings - press ok -scroll down to maintenance- ok- oil percentage- hold down on ok button until reset to 100 percent is visible on dash gauge, done.

That's a good looking cap! But I was slightly disappointed you didn't show the old oil draining out. To me that's always the best part.

Always pop the hood and remove oil cap First. Just in case there’s a problem gettin the hood open or getting the cap off.

There are replacement plugs with a 3/8 ratchet hole to replace the original. I often have to use pliers on original type and the plastic stops tend tabs sometimes crack. Also plugs available with ballcock valve and a hose to attach to keep oil from running over the swaybar and not in a single stream. Personal preference but options available

Good video brother. Just an FYI to your surprise as to the amount of oil needed for the engine. It requires the 6 quarts because the turbo is also lubricated with it. This also makes it more important to have your oil changed when it's time and not put it off till later.

Should have shown the oil plug coming out and if the oil draining hits the sway bar near the drain plug. Also, good idea to check the level on the dipstick after adding in the new oil in case you forgot to install the drain plug or the oil somehow found it's way somewhere else other than in the pan. I wish Ford had copied Subaru and had used a good old fashioned metal case filter in that location, a lot less hassle just replacing the old-fashioned type filters, but I do give Ford credit for the easy access and vertical placement.

Some manufacturers suggest changing the bolt after each oil Change. They call them TTY (torque-to-yield) bolts. Basically 1 time use. Audi does this on their cars.

Will the truck computer know if the oil was change or does it have to be manually reset?

Should have taken the oil filter out FIRST so oil drains completely!

Just bought a 2024 2.7. Ford recommends oil change ever 10k, how much earlier are you doing yours?

Check it when you change the oil and you Change it when it’s dirty. Depending where you drive. You might change more often than others.

How many km or miles do you change your oil?

  • @MikeSchill-nd1nx

Should change filter first, dirty oil that is in filter housing drains into pan when black housing cap with oring is removed.

I work in the industry working with petroleum and it’s my experience that there’s no need to run full vs semi synthetic oil. Save your money just get semi-synthetic.

Pretty sure I saw a small sliver of aluminum on the side of you filter canister during your video. Always be sure to clean those threads before installing the filter canister.
