  • A how to video for changing the engine oil on a 2021, 2022, 2023 F150 5.0L V8.
    - Requires 7.75 qts of 5W30 oil
    - Note the change from 5W20 to 5W30 for 2021!
    - Same filter FL500S as previous years
    - Note the change from plastic oil pan and plastic plug back to steel for 2021.
    If you're wondering, I like and use the Motorcraft Synthetic Blend oil, but that's just me. You can buy it right at Walmart if you are in the US and if you are in Canada, (until the border opens again), I've had great success ordering from rockauto.com. They ship to Canada, fast and cheap.
    Valid for all trim levels of 2021, 2022, 2023 F-150, XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum.
    * Please make sure to take appropriate safety precautions if lifting your truck to change the oil. Use jack stands, wheel chocks, safety glasses, gloves, etc.*

    I noticed you were laying under your truck jacked up with no safety stands. This was like watching someone clean a loaded gun! This is the #1 killer of amateur home mechanics. Jack fails or slips, truck falls and smashes you. I only mention this so know body else climbs under a vehicle held up by only jacks with no safety stands. NEVER CLIMB UNDER A VEHICLE HELD UP ONLY BY JACKS! NEVER!

    • @michaeltouw8908
      @michaeltouw8908  3 роки тому +6

      Agreed! I didn’t in this case because the truck is high enough that if the jack failed I can still fit underneath, just didn’t have enough room to work.
      But great point: ALWAYS support your vehicle with safety stands when working underneath it if you have it jacked up.
      Thanks for pointing it out.

    The oil filter drain is in the front and rear (or at least it is on my 2019 f150 5.0) so that it shouldn’t hit the shield beneath the truck. Look above the shield next oil change and you should see a drain tube identical to the one you see up front. This is for reasons in your case when the truck is jacked up or at a down hill angle, it can drain out the rear also. There is a large plastic tray underneath the oil filter that drains the oil out the front or rear depending on the angle the truck is sitting while changing the oil.

The 5.0L uses the Motorcraft FL500S filter. And if you've had previous 5.0L engines, note that as of 2021, you now need to use 5W30. Good luck!

Interesting they went back to a steel oil pan - I just bought a bunch of replacement plastic plugs figuring I’d be using them in both the F150 and Mustang. @michaeltouw8908  Рік тому

      I'm approaching 60,000 miles/100,000 km, and yes, have used the dipstick multiple times. Agreed, it is hard to read. Two tricks I've found:
      1) wipe it with a clean rag or paper towel and repeat, it becomes SLIGHTLY less smeared the second time.
      2) if you twist it a bit and look at it at the right angle you can see (if I recall gr. 10 science correctly) a "meniscus" of oil and you can see the top edge of the oil line where the curve touches the dip stick again.
      Dip stick could definitely use some improvement though!

      Hi, I put 20x9 wheels on it. I just got them from Canadian Tire here in Canada, and 275/60R20 BF Goodrich T/A KO2 tires. They are a 33" tire in this size. I wanted something a little bigger, but wasn't ready for a lift or level kit yet. I like the all black look and the little more aggressive tire. They have been great in the snow, on the highway (have a 60 mile one way highway commute), and have taken them quite far off road several times and they have been a great balance between all of those uses.

    Just an observation to be aware of. I had a oil filter o ring come off the filter and stick to the engine block. If you don’t notice it and put new filter on it will leak once engine pressure builds up.

    • @michaeltouw8908

      Great advice! Always check your old filter when it comes off to make sure the o-ring is there, or if you can see the filter housing, doesn't hurt to check that too to make sure it's clean and that there is no old o-ring still there.

      Hey! I’ve had my 2021 5.0L for 18 months and have 55,000km/34,000miles already and (knock on wood) it has been trouble free. My 2018 burned some oil, this one does not. The engine has run smoothly and reliably. The only issue I’ve had is that the tailgate had to be adjusted once because it was getting stuck and not releasing and it’s now starting to do the same thing again. But other than that I would still highly recommend the truck and would buy another one myself. It’s driven daily on highways and occasionally off road and has made it from the east coast to the prairies. Still love it.

    Water-oil does not run up hill! Your garage is higher than your driveway. The back of the truck is lower than the front because of that and it causes the oil to come towards the back on that small skidplate. If you use your stands on the front and the jack to lift the back. The oil will come through where it’s supposed to come and your truck won’t crush you if the jack fails. Also when you take the oil plug you should take the filter off as well and let everything drip as long as you can, flush with a bit of fresh oil and place everything back then refill. This gets rid of all the shavings and dirty oil. Just my two cents. I sent your video as a guide to a friend for his new truck. Thank you for sharing this. 👍🏼

    To be clear, the only reason why the oil came out in the wrong place when removing the oil filter was because you had the truck lifted at the wrong angle?
    But it was nice to see the used oil come out of the pan straight into your pan.
    Curious, is there an override for the V4 deactivation?

    • @michaeltouw8908
      @michaeltouw8908  3 роки тому +3

      Likely yes. I imagine if the truck is sitting flat on the ground or lifted on a hoist, it should likely all come out the intended spot beneath the oil filter. Was meant to be a note to the home mechanic who has lifted it only in one spot enough to get underneath.
      No override for the V4, nor is there any indication when it kicks on (i.e/ no light on the dash or anything). I saw one video on youtube with an aftermarket exhaust where they claimed they could tell in the exhaust note when it kicked on.
      I expect there is/may be an override through FORScan similar to the auto start/stop, but haven't investigated it enough yet.

      The drain plug on my 2018 was a plastic one with large tabs on the side and was just a quarter turn and was capable of being removed by hand.
      Good point regarding synthetic blend oils. At one time I had done a bunch of reading and research on the Ford synthetic blend and seemed to get very high ratings. And is a good price. I do have a 2006 Mustang with the 4.6V8 with 125,000 miles and (knock on wood) it’s been trouble free. @@michaeltouw8908 Are you sure the rattle was transmission. I have a 2018 and the rattle that develops is from spark knock running 87 octane in 5.0L which they increased compression on from 10.5 to 12 in 2018 as well as the 10-speed shifting too soon. The noise completely goes away with switching to 93 octane or E85, so now I run 93 in one tank and then fill up on E85 and switch back and forth so the costs balance out.

    Had to give it thumbs down because not only you do not change your oil when the truck is not leveled (speaking of not leaving old oil in the engine), you certainly do NOT crawl underneath a car/truck that is raised with a floor jack without additional support. like a stand jack, wood blocks, etc. (especially when it's not level).

      Yes thank you. Other people have commented on the jack stands and I have highlighted a note in the description on that as well. As far as not being perfectly level, yeah, certainly that’s ideal, but most home mechanics aren’t going to have a lift to perfectly level their vehicle.
