I found a quite big ZZ plant that has been thrown away by its owner (idk who, but it should be one of my neighbours). When I saw that half of the leaves are getting yellow (I guess it has been showered by the rain for a few days and starting to get rot I guess), then I started to addopt it. I hope it will grow and get better soon 🙏
I have a huge ZZ that I forgot to water it for 2 months. After that, 7 stalks of leaves turned yellow gradually. After watering, 12 new shoots coming up too. Most of them are tall and strong. They grow fast too. This plant is so amazing.
In regards to toxicity, I have a ZZ too, it’s not going to kill. About two weeks ago my cat ate about 8 to 10 of the leafs and part of a smaller stem. She went to town on this plant in a matter of minutes. She’s 10yo, she is a tiny little petite cat that weighs only 7lbs. So I just kept an eye on her and she was just fine but she did have diarrhea for a few days but that didn’t happen until a couple days after eating it. So it took a little time for her body to digest the leafs. No vomiting, she was acting like her naughty little self, no change to her personality at all, no changes with eating and drinking either. So people really do exaggerate just how toxic this plant is. With most “toxic” plants your cat or dog will have diarrhea(maybe some vomiting too). So you just need to keep the animal very hydrated until the diarrhea subsides(by mixing water in with all the food you feed them or getting a bag of IV fluid and giving your animal fluids to keep them hydrated). So don’t panic and think your animal is going to die because usually that is not the case. As long as you keep them hydrated until it subsides the animal will be (most likely) fine 😉
One of my cats that came from a barn is a tiny little one, she's about 2 years old but LOVES plants too much. She took a bite of the stem and decided she didn't like it. Over a year later the teeth marks are still there, but she chomps most of my plants then she might throw up once then doesn't eat that specific plant again. She's back to herself within the next two days. Only one I keep away from her is the dumb cane😂 As long as they don't eat too much, they'll be okay!

It was my first ever zz. 2-4 months later it was completely rotten. Excellent video. I have my beautiful Raven ZZ and she's putting out so much new growth since i've just repotted her. I only water her with rainwater and give her worm castings! She loves it!
These ravens are sold for a hefty price where i live, at least by my standards, but farmers market near my mom has ton of them inside. So I dared snatch two cuttings and plucked few of the lowest leaflets (correct me I'm wrong, but I believe entire vegetative part is a leaf, and what looks like a leaf is a leaflet, but, I might be wrong) anyway, I plucked few bottom leaflets, and put them all in the water. I don't remember it took them all that long to root, but I have adhd, I might have simply forgotten. You might want to cut the step right bellow the node. I had like half a centimeter bellow the node on one, and centimeter and a half bellow the node on second stem, and the shorter one produced the root much faster. The other one looked so weird, because the rhizome, which looks a lot like a spring potato, will start to grow out of the stalk, and if there's too much stalk bellow the node, it will have to grow out of that, so it will look like the stalk is splitting before the rhizome finally shows up. I had them grow to a size of the smaller spring potato before I planted them. the rhizome had at least 2 times the girth, maybe even 3 times the girth of the stalk when I planted them As for leaflets, I didn't manage to get any plants, but they did all create a small rhizome, however those were nowhere near as big as when you use the stalk. They were about the size of the red currant, or maybe smaller blueberry. Once they reached that size, I let them dry out completely (adhd, get off my case), and I moved them too far from the sun, cause they were in the way, but I forgot to put them back, so they yellowed, and shriveled and I lost them all, one by one. So, if you do propagation by leaf, you'll probably want to plant them when rhizome is like smaller blueberry. Now, I have two stalks mixed with 3 regular zz stalks in the same pot, and I have a number of new stalks, but, since they are all green, I honestly don't know if any of them are raven, or if they are all regulars. will just have to wait and see At any rate, I would advise using stalks instead of leaflets, I don't remember that it was slower at all, and it's much easier to keep alive than the tiny leaflet, where if the leaflet dies, it's done for, all the progress up until then was in vain

Great video! I just got 2 of these about a month ago (completely new to house plants), and the new light green stem is coming up. Possibly a silly Q - but can you show how you water it? (how much water you pour into the pot, etc?) I have been lightly watering (more spraying the surface or pouring water around it), but the water never goes super deep as obviously the pot is quite deep. Is that ok? how much water exactly should you pour in? Thanks
Ah amazing! not a silly q! so whenever I water any plants, I water until the soil is soaked fully through. like coming out the drainage holes soaked. Overwatering is more about frequency than amount so only water this one again when the soil has gone completely dry. Good luck
@@GoodGrowing that makes sense! Ok i wasn't watering until the water dripped out the drainage holes (clearly i know nothing about plants 😅) so that's great to know, thanks so much! x

Hey thanks! To make sure the soil has good drainage, you can add perlite and orchid bark to a normal indoor potting mix. I usually do it at a ration of 2:1 soil to perlite/bark
thank you for the vid! i will use your info. my regular old zz is about 5 years old and is growing out of control! i love it! i killed a cactus once- but i can't kill my zz!! (knock on wood!) please tell me how to cut the stems down shorter? i'm going to divide it at the roots, and hopefully shorten the mostly 4-5 foot long stems. it is too tall and floppy! thanks jay in chicago
Oh amazing! You could shorten the stems from the top but new growth wouldn't come from there. I repotted mine and put the tubers a bit lower down so mine wasn't so floppy. You could also stake them with bamboo to help support
I brought a zz plant about 5 years ago pot it in soil from outside put it in small table by a window and ignored it. And this thing got so big its taking over my darn house.... I LOVE IT. It was the first plant I bought along with a peace lily that died during quarantine.
Just saw this on my video feeds unfortunately my normal green z z plant i had to throw it out bottom leaves started to turn yellow. Also have of the root was mushy and damaged. And was infested with fungas gnats been getting these lately. Such a pain. Also the roots was coming out of the pot when i bought it in the garden centre. I never had problems or pests when i had succulents and cacti. Now that i have hoya’s and ficus tineke foliage plants I notice more gnats.
Yeah soil stays wetter on those sorts of houseplants so you're much more likely to get fungus gnats. I've got a video on how to get rid of and prevent them. Might be worth having a watch :) good luck!
new subscriber here :) i love your zz raven, she is BEAUTIFUL! and one of my wishlist. i water my zz plant 2x or 3x a week as i keep it in our shaded roofdeck coz of the heat we have here in our country.
I’ve had a zz plant for about a month now ✨ I’ve only misted it once and it’s not in serious direct light (been pretty gloomy as of late) but it’s drooping a bit in the front. Is drooping normal??
I wouldn't say drooping is normal per se. If the stems are still feeling plump and the leave aren't wrinkled it could just be getting too heavy and may need to be potted deeper. If it is a bit mushy or wrinkled then it might be a sign of overwatering/not enough light
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear your fiddle isn't doing well... Unfortunately I haven't got one so I don't really know much about care tips for them. I do know they're quite picky though, that's why I'm a bit scared to get one! Sorry I couldn't help more! Thanks for the suggestion though!
I got a Fiddle and yes they are picky. It's been about a month since I brought mine home and leaves are dropping and turning brown. I dont think it is going to make it.
I bought one of these about 3 weeks ago. It's much smaller than yours; It has two stems that seem fairly mature (both have at last 8 leaves, and one has a really girthy base - like a tuber), and one stem that seems more like a pup; it's less than half the height and only has four leaves. I haven't done anything with the plant other than put it in a cold, north facing room. I haven't even watered it yet. Recently, the ends of the leaves on the new stem have become discoloured (kind of a warm gold fading into brown at the very edges of the leaf). I'm not sure what to do! Water? Prune? Mist? Warm it up? 😞 Any thoughts?? 😱
Hmmm, mine is in a cold NE facing room right now too and I haven't experienced this.. could be that your plant is in a bit of a shock from the drastic change. The room you have it in now sounds like a place where it will tolerate living rather than super thriving. Their ideal ideal is bright indirect, but can tolerate much lower, just won't grow too much. Is it possible for you to bring it in to a slightly warmer brighter room while it acclimates to your house? And then gradually move it back to the room you want it in? Best of luck!
@@GoodGrowing I think shock might be it. It was a 2hr drive over the mountains to fly the raven back to mine. I will try a different room (all my other rooms are south facing) and see how it goes. Thanks!
@@DanielRRomani Yeah that sounds like some pretty intense trauma for the little guy! South facing is OK if you put it far from a window and try to make sure it doesn't get direct sun. Could even put a sheer curtain up!
@@colenaylor7651 I diagnosed it as thirsty. I pruned the damaged leaves and watered it. That seemed to perk it up. I've since bought a moisture meter to help me take better care of the plants.
Hi! New subscriber here! I just got a small zz raven plant for my birthday. Two stems with all black leaves. It was pretty wet when I received it. I’ve been letting it dry out. One of the roots is sticking out but thinking it’s due to rough shipping rather than outgrowing it’s pot. Considering repotting it in a couple weeks to put the root back in the soil.
Hey! Welcome and thanks for subscribing! Exciting about the new plant and happy belated birthday! Good you're letting it dry as they don't like to be wet! Is the whole root sticking out or just like an arch? As long as the end isn't sticking out I don't think it's too big an issue. ZZ's like to be quite pot bound so if you do repot and there's still room in there I would suggest not going up a size. Hope that helps! Best of luck!
Mine has started to wilt with slight browning. Am I over watering or something else. I know I should change the soil type but would that fix this. Its my favourite plant and I don't want you hurt it
Oh no! Is it mushy browning? Because that sounds like overwatering/tuber rot kind of thing. I'd say let it dry out completely before watering it again! Best of luck
My leaves on mine are turning black and kind of rotting I think I’ve had to clip a few I’m not sure what the problem is and I’ve made sure to not water it too much I think the last time I watered it was probably three or four weeks ago in the soil is still pretty moist so I just left it alone I have it in the corner with my other low light plants just to kind of see if something would help but I feel like it’s just sick I don’t know what else to do:(
Hmmm that's no good! It sounds like it could have some root or tuber rot! Defo let it dry out completely before you give it any more water. I honestly can't remember the last time I watered mine... You could try putting it in a brighter spot (indirect only, no direct sun) for a little bit. It could help dry it out a bit more! If drying it doesn't help, it would be good to take a look at the roots and remove any rotting ones. Best of luck!
Hi, just bought a ZZ plant and will water monthly, just wanted to ask you, how much water do you give yours, a cup? half a cup? Also do you water from the top or bottom? Thanks. Yours is stunning.
Aww amazing that you just got one, they're so great! I water mine until it starts coming out the bottom of the nursery pot quite a bit. Then I know it has soaked up what it can! It probably ends up being 500ml or so, sometimes more if I've left it a while. Best of luck!
@@GoodGrowing thanks, this helps, I've killed so many indoor plants but am only starting again to get into them just recently, l decided on the ZZ and Snake plant, if these die on me, well...I'll never buy another plant again, lol. Got a Snake plant for my sons room too, he's named it BIF 🤣 I also got me a Peace lily and it's started to droop, l will water it for the first time tomorrow. 🤞
@@miryanacurcic6460 Tbh with both my ZZ and snake plants, I basically neglect them in terms of watering... It ends up being like once a month even in the height of growing season (they are in darker parts of my house so won't need as much).. maybe I'm doing it wrong but so far they're still living.
Do you mean the old leaves are getting lighter? Or new leaves coming in are lighter? If you're talking about the new leaves, that's totally normal! They take their time going dark after growing to maturity. If you mean old leaves, I'm not too sure. It could mean that maybe they need a bit more light? Not sun, just brighter indirect? Best of luck!
Hi, I just inherited a ZZ plant and I see that most plants have strong upright stocks. Curious if the drooping is being caused by any issues? The stocks on my plant are pretty tall and dark green but not sure why they arent strong enough to hold themselves up? Help plz. :)
Mine has started to do that as well tbh! Mostly on the longest stocks... I'm planning on giving it some fertiliser to help perk it up a bit! Then I was thinking maybe I'd stake it... not super sure though! Sorry!
@@GoodGrowing Thank you! I wonder if that's just what might happen when they are taller, it looks healthy to me but no new growth- we shall see with both of our plants. Thank you :)
@@smileyflaca So update! I repotted mine yesterday and brought the soil slightly higher up so it is tighter around the base of the stem. That seems to have helped the drooping problem quite a bit. Also it was time to size up pots anyways so it was good timing :) good luck with yours!
I just bought my first zz raven. It's literally a baby with just one medium sized stem. Will it produce more stems over time if taken care of? Yours is gorgeous! #zzgoals :)
Ooh very exciting! Yes, in time it will produce more stems if they're getting enough light. I know these are 'low light' plants but they'll survive there rather than thrive. To help encourage more growth, put in a medium-bright indirect spot. Good luck!
I got it from London Houseplants. They are a small UK based company and they ship anywhere in the UK. But I've seen them around other shops in London as well. Where do you live? I've heard its hard to get in some places! Best of luck finding one!

Be sure not to stick it near the stems or you gonna puncture the rhizome which can be the size of your head, i soak mine wet takes about 2 month's in winter to dry out then again mine was overwatered on purchase so had to repot it so excess moisture would be wicked away by the dry soil and clay pot
Ooh yeah thanks for the suggestions! I am honestly so scared of fiddles though! They seem sooooo finicky! Maybe I'll have to get one for the sake of the people!
I've got a few ZZ plants. I killed one by watering it every couple of weeks! I'd be on the side of waiting until the thick stems start to show signs of shrinking in. Don't do it!
So I was told by my aunt that they are sort of poisonous and not to touch my zz’s without gloves lol. But you seem to be touching all over that guy and are fine lol. So I assume they’re fine to the touch just not ingesting I guess?
@@GoodGrowing the sap is the bit that’s toxic and might irritate the skin. Ive been told not to touch one’s face especially, when pruning or cutting the stems as that’s where the sap is.
(knock on wood!)
please tell me how to cut the stems down shorter? i'm going to divide it at the roots, and hopefully shorten the mostly 4-5 foot long stems. it is too tall and floppy!
thanks
jay in chicago
Oh amazing! You could shorten the stems from the top but new growth wouldn't come from there. I repotted mine and put the tubers a bit lower down so mine wasn't so floppy. You could also stake them with bamboo to help support
@@GoodGrowing thx for responding! See ya soon!
Thanks for the info :) I'm waiting for mine to arrive so this was very helpful !
Ooooh! So exciting! Glad I could help you prepare! :)
Can you do a video like this on jade plants?
Character In the video It's great, I like it a lot $$
Thanks for all the great tips and your ZZ Raven is so gorgeous and huge 😍🌿
Glad they helped! And thanks! Its defo an amazing plant!
I love your videos 😘i’m from Romania
Aww thank you
I got mine and hadn't watered it for 4 months and it's still happy... I'm going to water a little more now it's warmer.
That's what I love about them! They're just so chill and don't need much!
I brought a zz plant about 5 years ago pot it in soil from outside put it in small table by a window and ignored it. And this thing got so big its taking over my darn house.... I LOVE IT. It was the first plant I bought along with a peace lily that died during quarantine.
YESSS! Glad to hear your ZZ is doing so well! They are such fantastic plants! Sorry to hear about your peace lily though!
New subscriber! & new plant mom! 💖
Welcome to plant parenthood! And welcome to the good growing fam! thanks for subscribing
I killed mine in one month lol! Just got a new one and I hope I get it right this time because they aint cheap where I am
Mine just sprouted 2 new stems thats bigger than the original ones but they are GREEN! Will they turn black?
Super exciting! Yes new stems grow out in a neon green and will fade to black in time. It does take a while though
Aww thanks for subscribing!!
@@GoodGrowing Thanks lovely :) I'll keep monitoring them!
I'd love to see your take on a Fiddle! I just got one yesterday that is very sad.
I'm getting a as raven tomorrow carnt wait. Been thinking of getting one for a while. X
Yay so exciting! They're such lovely plants! :)
Water? Prune? Mist? Warm it up? 😞
Any thoughts??
Daniel Romani Hey how’s it doing now? Mine is having the same issues
Hey thanks for your reply. Unfortunately the plant has passed on to blacker pastures.
@@shaunconn8430 Oh no!! I'm sorry to hear that. Love your pun though :)
Hi...I have my raven for 6 months+ now but the leaves are becoming lighter than the original black..can u pls tell me what to do ??
Do you mean the old leaves are getting lighter? Or new leaves coming in are lighter? If you're talking about the new leaves, that's totally normal! They take their time going dark after growing to maturity. If you mean old leaves, I'm not too sure. It could mean that maybe they need a bit more light? Not sun, just brighter indirect? Best of luck!
@@GoodGrowing ya I was concerned about the old leaves getting lighter...thanks a ton. This helps !!!
Zz raven is so beautiful 🌿
Seriously such a beautiful plant!
omg i love my zz raven but now pretty scared because you mention cancer causing :( but thanks so much for sharing that information .
Noooo don't worry!! I'm pretty sure that was a strange myth going around. I've never had any issues with my ZZ! And thank you so much for watching!
Excellent
Thanks
Hi,
I just inherited a ZZ plant and I see that most plants have strong upright stocks.
@@GoodGrowing Thank you for letting me know :) much appreciated. I will def have to raise the soil level on mine as well, :D
I hope it helps
I just bought my first zz raven. It's literally a baby with just one medium sized stem. Will it produce more stems over time if taken care of?
Yours is gorgeous! #zzgoals :)
Ooh very exciting! Yes, in time it will produce more stems if they're getting enough light. I know these are 'low light' plants but they'll survive there rather than thrive. To help encourage more growth, put in a medium-bright indirect spot. Good luck!
Where did you get the raven? I’m trying to find it but I can’t find it anywhere near me 😭 it’s beautiful!
I got it from London Houseplants. They are a small UK based company and they ship anywhere in the UK. But I've seen them around other shops in London as well. Where do you live? I've heard its hard to get in some places! Best of luck finding one!
Val they are selling them on Amazon now
ZZ raven is one of my wishlist. The other day I saw it in nursery & wanted to buy it..... but it cost me MYR 350.00!!! equal to 84 US Dollar. I'm broke. So I just bought the normal one huhuhu need to save some money to buy that :'D
Ahh thats so much money!! I'd defo wait a while and maybe it'll go down in price in your area! Best of luck finding one!
ZZ's are very regular priced here in Cyprus!
Awesome plant! When you finally got to the point 🤦🏽♀️you were very informative!! Thank you for sharing.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Haha I know I do ramble a bit at the beginning of my videos.. oops! Glad you enjoyed it in the ed thought! Thanks for watching
New sub. I just got this plant in my room. Thx for the info UwU
Thanks for joining!! Yayyy I love this plant so much! So easy going! Best of luck with it!
Good 👍👍🙂
How long does it take your ZZ plant to get this big?
I bought it fairly big tbh. But as they are slow growers I'd say it would be at least a few years
Would a north window be ok
Yeah I'm sure they would love that (assuming you live in the northern hemisphere)
Be sure not to stick it near the stems or you gonna puncture the rhizome which can be the size of your head, i soak mine wet takes about 2 month's in winter to dry out then again mine was overwatered on purchase so had to repot it so excess moisture would be wicked away by the dry soil and clay pot
Of course! Don't want to picture those rhizomes!
What kind of food should I feed it?
There's loads of different types of plant food. I use Miracle-Gro powdered stuff at 1/2 strength. It's probably not the best, but it's what I've got!
ivy!! and a fiddle!
Ooh yeah thanks for the suggestions! I am honestly so scared of fiddles though! They seem sooooo finicky! Maybe I'll have to get one for the sake of the people!
Where can i buy raven zz plant?
They are pretty common for most garden centres! Have a look at some local ones around you :)
Mine has done absolutely nothing! Moving closer to direct sunlight🤷🏽♀️
Yes defo closer. But direct sunlight can burn. Maybe stick to bright indirect!
Yeah I talk about it a bit at the end of the video under toxicity. I've heard the same but never had any issues 🤷🏻♀️
@@GoodGrowing the sap is the bit that’s toxic and might irritate the skin. Ive been told not to touch one’s face especially, when pruning or cutting the stems as that’s where the sap is. If you have very sensitive skin then wear gloves when cutting or pruning. Otherwise just wash with soap and water if you’re doing any cutting. They ARE very good for purifying the air tho.
I never find that ZZ raven and I get so frustrated.
Apparently it's not that common in the US! Strange cuz it's everywhere here!
@@GoodGrowing I am from Austria and no plant shop in Europe has is apparently.
@@lisalehner3990 That's mental!
how much water though
You should be watering your plants until the soil is thoroughly soaked and water is coming through the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot
@@GoodGrowing got it, thank you
Brasil
It can be easily killed by water
False. They can grow healthily in just water. The wrong type of soil with over watering kills them.
Are you British? I hear a bit of an english accent...
I'm half british half american, but live in London now
