    How do you like to pack your builds when you go to model shows? Links are in the video description for materials used in this video.

    When he said I really do trust this well yea I do to he is a master builder and photographer I trust him completely and these builds took him or builders 1-2 years to build these beautiful models

    You could put one clear side on and double as travel case then take foam out and it's a display case

    Years ago, a guy came to one of our club meetings and brought one of his models with him. It was a GSL award winner and had been on the cover of Scale Auto. When he left he just wrapped it with a bunch of toilet paper and put it in an old model box! I’ll never forget that. I wish I could remember his name

    That's got to be the best way to move a kit from one place to another that I have ever seen , Outstanding solution for traveling with models and like you said it's a vary elegant look when you unpack a kit makes someone want to see what's in the box ! 👍👍👍👍

    Boxes and packaging is what I do professionally. I 100% agree with Doug. When it comes to the foam, there are 3 types - Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Polyethylene, and Polyurethane. EPS is also known as Styrofoam like for coolers. You don't want that. Polyethylene (PE) is more firm and rigid than Polyurethane (PU). PU is squishy and softer. This is what Doug shows in the video and what you want to use. The box Doug shows is awesome. If you don't want to make your own, you can find ready made boxes from a company called Uline. They have a variety of sizes available for fairly cheap. They work quite well. You can find a size that will accommodate what you're putting in and then size your foam to fit. Just offering another option to this awesome video.

    I remember that day, has to be at least 25 years ago. I'm at the NNL East, I see Mr. White place a black box on one of the display tables. I watch and observe with such excitement and curiosity to see what is inside this shiny mysterious black box. Mr. White begins to remove these pieces of foam that look like they were cut on a water jet. Of course back then there was no such thing which made this box and the way it was constructed all the more amazing. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better, out comes this amazing amazing Studebaker custom. To this day this model car has always been my all time favorite custom ever built! This car as Mr. White stated was built over 30 years ago and I believe that if this model was built the same exact way as a 1:1 custom, there is no reason it couldn't be a serious contender for the Ridler even today!! I only had the pleasure of talking briefly with Mr. White maybe a couple of times and it was always a treat. The other thing that stands out about that day is.....he hasn't aged a bit, he still looks the same as that day over 25 years ago :)

    Also you can buy clear acrylic sheet and build display cases as well same way to save money you could get beautiful cases even use wood and make custom sizes for dioramas and multi car displays

    In the cabinet shop were I worked we use torch on the edges to provide a glass smooth edge after sanding and beveling ! Interesting watching modelers unpacking and displaying there builds! 98% of them would be shaking like a leaf! Maybe because of the excitement or just nervous! This would help with a lot of the registration pain at shows! Very cool! I see another aftermarket product here!🤔😳🫡😝🇺🇸

    Hi Doug, I really enjoy your videos from over here in the UK and I have been watching since you started the channel. It really is wonderful to see all the great models & creative and skilled model builders you showcase and speak to and interview. 👍👍
    These storage boxes are just a wonderful, very practical and great looking idea. 😮
    Watching this video I was very interested in seeing your workshop in the background, would it be possible to do a workshop tour video showing us where and how you work and telling us about what tools & equipment you have / use and why? I would love to see this even though I am likely to get jealous about all the great things you can get over there in the States that we can only dream about over here in the UK lol..
    I am sure others would find this as fascinating as I would. 🙏

    Not too long ago I though about reaching out to you and ask precisely about this. I was going to enter the competition at the RTS show in Taunton MA and was worried about transporting customs there. I end up not making it, but this is a valuable video. Great work on the boxes that are great for transportation and display.

    this is partly why I'm an armor modeler now not a car modeler now, i wanna see what kind of modeler you are not what kind of modeler you were, i try my best to make sure i have something new on the table every show i go to (and i pull it off 80% of the time) when i see people pulling out models they built before i was born, it just annoys me, not saying its a bad model, but your skills and modeling techniques should have improved in the last 30 years, if your still just as proud of what you built in the 80s (that has now deteriorated to some extent) as your last build, you haven't tried to push yourself, and improve your craft, and nothing says living in the past like building a custom box for them.
    Doug, your a great modeler (i think ive talked to you in Toledo early in my modeling) and I can learn a lot from you, but making a custom box for a model that SHOULD only make it to maybe a half dozen shows before you've built a few more models with more experience and more skills that you are more proud of, just screams living in the past, and I believe you are missing the point of modeling.
    its FAR more beneficial to the hobby for tens of your models to be seen by hundreds of people each, with each model being an improvement over the last, then one of your models being seen by thousands of people over a couple decades that was build with modeling techniques from a decade ago.
    but i guess it just boils down to what you are in the hobby for, personal growth, or being praised by others, and only one of those things should be respected.... in this hobby and in life in general

    Really cool idea! I will definetely make use of this.
    One thing I am doing for newer models is that I glue in 2 or 3 nuts in the inside of the car. You can then screw down the model inside a box. That makes it possible to have no conbtact point other than the wheels to the box and secures the car completely. Obviously this is only possible when you actually glue in that nut so this is not doable for my older models which is why this method of yours is really great too

    Doug, regarding the charcoal foam - what PCF spec is the foam you purchase? I am curious if there is a PCF that is less abrasive towards the clear and paint. Along with that, besides the 1/2” thickness, what is the length and width you purchase your foam? 12x12 , 12x24?

    • @ModelCarMuse
      @ModelCarMuse  2 роки тому +1

      I don't recall the PCF, but it has not had any effect on my paint. I have bought different lengths.

    Noticing the writing on your bench top, is there a story behind it(my grandfather used to sell Nash autos)?

    • @ModelCarMuse

      The "Nash" refers to Nash Engineering, a company that made pumps and turbines in the 1930s to 70s. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Doug, in this video you show the Daytona (red/white #71), with hinges float/pivot up. I have been looking on UA-cam and a few model car forums on how to do this but cannot find anything close. Can you please make a video on how you made these hinges float up and have that spring like appearance?

    Nicely done Doug. How difficult would it be to make one of these for a ship model? Seems nearly impossible with rigging, masts and numerous small parts waiting to break off. Curious to know what you think.

    • @ModelCarMuse
      @ModelCarMuse  2 роки тому +1

      Sure, this could be adapted to a ship, just need to determine the secure touch points and leave enough room for rigging to not be touched by anything. Support the hull like I did with the car in case the box goes sideways or upside down, support the masts in case the box is jolted sideways, and make sure the rigging is just in air. If you can plan ahead, make other delicate appendages removable to pack separately like I did with the hoods.

    I saw there are two types of foam from the link you posted. Which is it you are using: the Polyethylene or the Polyurethane?

    • @ModelCarMuse
      @ModelCarMuse  2 роки тому +1

      Polyurethane. It's softer than Polyethylene. See RSVP - Real & Scale Vehicles & Projects' comment under this video for a great explanation!
