my mother bought me a model and glue with no paint. I was about 8 or 9 and got frustrated immediately.
My father came home from Grumman aerospace and proceeded to demonstrate what patience means. He glue two pieces and held them till they dried.
I am now 62 and I still remember that day. Enjoy the time you spend with your kids, it's precious and you may not realize how much your kids are listening and watching so act accordingly.

Your tip for suspending brushes in thinners used to be a common practice for painters and decorators here in the UK. It also helps get paint out of the root of the brush ( not that it should be there in the first place). I personally learned of it some 50 years ago when I worked in a paint research laboratory.

Dollar store: Look for a package of wire brushes that look like toothbrushes. Instead of plastic bristles, however, they are brass. They're great for cleaning your files as they get filled up while you're filing. A clean file always gives better bite and with more control.
Also, plastic scouring pads come in a variety of grits and cane be very effective in sanding things, especially if you use a small piece held in a hemostat or cross-action tweezers for sanding in small places.

Ahh Scale modeling. It was our version of video games for those who modeled Never once thought about abusing cement. Though I get waves of nostalgia catching whiffs of glue & Testors enamels. My imagination is still sparked by my thoughts growing up & scale modeling World War 2 aircraft & Science Fiction models. Plus the monsters & Tom Daniel funny cars. 64 now with a stash of every kit I want to build & the talent from age to do a better job. Hail to technology also although, I do not like working with resin & CA glue. 1/32 scale 4 engine bombers, ......My kid self would shit himself.

Those blue gloves are perfect for working with epoxy and polyester resins. They wont stretch or melt in the resins.
I think a long parking lot for the model cars, so they dont look abandoned without drivers at a intersection.

The panel lines on that BMW made a big difference. Really looks good. Cool idea with the clothespin. Lots and lots of great tips in this video.
My dad built custom cars all his life. After he had a stroke, he started customizing model cars, and did some great work. He could chop, channel and section a car, and it would look perfect. And he brought that skill to models. He had a room FULL of models he had built, all in those plastic show cases. My brother got all of his stuff (first come, first serve). I hope he took pictures of it, at least.
I used to have a nice '59 Imperial, but mine was a 4-door. Nice car.
My dad dated a girl who drove a '70 Dodge Challenger convertible - as a daily driver! All black. It looked brand new.

I find the American kit makers aren't nearly as good as the Japanese. Their molds are much better and the parts are very crisp. Their clear parts are way better and the tires as well. That Tamiya Ferrari 360 Modena you showed is amasing and I have both if them. Nice work area by the way and you gave me some ideas!

Very informative video! I'm 56 and have been building since 1975. I still remember my first kit, it was a gold dune buggy. Then my 2nd kit was a 55 Chevy which I made a total mess out of because it was my first attempt at spray painting. I've built so many kits over the years, I don't even know what happened to many of them. I always have taken detail seriously even though I seem to pick something new up every build, you still gave me a ton of ideas in this video. I hear ya about the 3.0 readers brother, I noticed as I age it's so hard to see these parts . I also noticed that I'm a hell of a lot shakier and much less patient than I was even 10 years ago. Thanks! I subscribed

good stuff, frugal modeling tips 👌
@19:43 for a cheaper paint stirrer, buy a battery Ikea milk frother instead for like 2 bucks 😁
@22:16 instead of those needle bottle or the brush caps, I use a small tip paintbrush to apply the cement from the bottle.
@26:05 you can also get a set of ESD tweezers of amazon for around 8 bucks
@31:05 I save and use styrofoam packaging that comes with new products.
@36:00 some (most) modeling tools are overpriced normal tools, best sprue cutter is a electronics wire cutter for soldering circuit boards, sharper and cheaper 👌

And I wouldn't necessarily trust using those big cans of Rust-Oleum to spray your plastic models because they will they will praise the plastic if you have to strip it down the plastic will be in a lot of cases ruined stick to airbrushing I know it's cheaper I know it sucks but you get what you pay for just remember that that's an everything in life you get what you paid for

I’m curious whether you have a source for ‘66 GTO’s? From everything I’ve heard they converted the kits to the’67 since the grills and taillights were mostly the only things that were changed. I came along a little too late to get one before they made the switch. I built a number of car models but I really liked building ships. Growing up, space was at a premium but with your tips I might have been able to make it work. I was too young to drive then so I wasn’t aware of the assembly tips that were available then. All the tips like oven cleaner, paint prep and masking were never shared with me. Makes me wish I was a little younger than now. Enjoyed your video!

(well, more like a 50 cent store because of exchange rate)
But sometimes, I just love splurging on dedicated tools for model building. Somehow splurging on tools complements my model building experience. Thank god I haven't splurged on airbrush kit because I have no idea on buying airbrush kit, or I might go broke splurging again on airbrush kit

38:16 Do all the perfect grades have handles built into the boxes like that? I used to collect Zoids, and they went from tiny wind up models to big battery powered ones. The biggest kit I had was King Gojulas, and he was in this huge box that had a built in handle like that. I remember ordering him and Deathsaurer when they released in the 90’s for 90 bucks each from Kimono My House I think.
Sadly I sold my collection long ago. I really miss all my Zoids.

Ok your maybe the one to ask ? I was modeling as well beginning 80s , and was very good at it winning for my age group a lot of prizes at IPMS contests. At a teenage age , due to the divorce and moving situation all my modeling tools paints where Stollen out of the storage from my father. Since then I never started again, now since UA-cam I watch somewhat and see how much has changed or ist new, paints especially. I used to use products such as floquil paints, green putty etc.. now a question you might know? There use to exist a silver paint or similar out of a tube it was like a metal finish and when painted over one could remove paint flake’s with dabbing the area with scotchtape, underneath the effect was bare metal. Does this stuff still exist ? Is it rub and buff ?
    Cheer’s

About masking tapes: to avoid the Tamiya tax or in case it's out of stock, try to get MT Washi tape (Amazon carries the product). MT is the factory that does the masking tape for Tamiya. Their main business is making painter's tape in Japan so the 3M recommendation is not so far fetched. But washi tape is better and won't ever strip your paint,. That unfortunately may happen with 3M painter's tape.

I take my new blades and use a 600 grit to and 8000 grit W/D sandpaper then I strip the blades. After is use the blade I strip it 20 times on both sides. It keeps the blade sharp all the time and you should never have to actually sharpen the blade again. I almost never sharpen a razor blade, unless the edge get damaged some how.
Sharpening is an art like everything. The more you do it, the better you get at it.
I sharpened the bayonets in my company in the military. I did swords to. I take a lot of pride in what I do. Whatever it is.

Purple Power Cleaner dechromes the absolute best and it’s reusable 1000’s of times. To go chrome to aluminum look, you could strip and repaint, or shoot matte or satin clear on the chrome, TA-DA aluminum. And yes it sticks to the chrome well if you wash it well before clearing it.

Trick to get lower pressure with spray paint, spray it upside down until paint stops coming out , continue spraying count to 12-15 seconds maybe 20 for rusto because it’s a very high pressure can already(not to long or it will not spray anymore) after you should have a way softer pressure when you spray.

I'm 59 and still building.. You made a good store run that trip.. I'm like you, I don't spend the high dollar for modeling tools and stuff.. And when I do spend the big bucks , it's on a specific tool.. And it's going to be something that's going to last a long time... But in all honesty, a model builder can get 90% of there tools and supplies at Dollar store's along with storage boxes and what not..

He didn’t punch the family delivery car~ his day got him to do the deliveries at night since he was about 11yo. So by the time he got his drivers license he actually had been driving for 5-6yrs. As he delivered in the wee hours of the morning, he was always in a rush to get home to go back to sleep, so not only was he familiar with the mountain trail, he got faster and better over time drifting down the mountain to get back home to bed~ obviously every story does have its backstory.. and his father was a legendary street racer who retired and got married and started a tofu shop~ he quietly fine tuned the AE86

Have you tried Frog tape?. I found that the blue painters tape ĥas too much adhesive. I use the green and yellow Frog tape. Yellow whas less adhesive and removes very easily off the surface of project.

I do recommend using nail polishing sanding blocks, it works better then the strips of paper. Super cheap and ultra fine grits, or Automobile wet sanding papers from the auto store. Scalpel works better than a hobby knife.

I prefer Krylon spray paints because they bind better and don't run as bad as paints from other brands like Rustoleum.
