I've used this method for 40 years or so. I used small lawn mower pullies for the bases and coat hangers with alligator clips attached on the ends. Never thought to share it with anybody. Glad you did... Great video...

I use my old fly tying vise with a weighted base.
I've had countless parts fall on the floor during my builds.. fortunately 95 percent of the time I was able to locate the part .. eventually. 😆!!

Awesome stands Doug. Conduit clamps might make decent handles to lift your stands. You would have to drill & tap screw holes to attach them. Just a thought. Have a great weekend.

What a great idea!! Had not thought of the gator clips, but it makes total sense....been using odd pieces (scraps) of 1X4 with holes drilled 1/8" to accept wire or bamboo sticks.
This is neater and like you said. "Lasts 35 years"

I use toothpicks and tweezers to help me attach small parts and for detail painting small areas...

Did you know there have been test, and quite extensive ones too, proving that pulling back on the file does NOT degrade the file? In fact, on some metals it actually cleaned the file.

Nice tip. I use the alligator clip, but I use a cat scratch pad to hold them it is fairly big, so tipping is not an issue and it doesn’t make a mess like styrofoam. They are also cheap. Less than $4.00 each at Walmart. Thanks for sharing.

HELLO MR.WHYTE . I am a fairly new sub to your channel and really enjoy your work and love for this hobby. I look forward to future video's. I do have a question for you or any of your advanced builder subs that may be reading my comments. First of all, I'm 59 and been out of the hobby since I was 27. I managed a welknown hobbyshop chain in my area. I spent my paychecks on ALOT of kits and end up keeping all my kits ( close to 150) all these years and I almost sold them ALL at a point in time, where I didn't see myself ever getting back into building. About 3 years ago,
I was watching random utube video's
and a channel named "Hpiguy" caught my eyes. Because of him, I got back into it hook,line and sinker lol. Anyway, I have to say that on a 1-5 scale of my building is maybe a 2-2.5. If I built more I would get better. When I was 27ish, I took on a car model project I had no business attempting. The kit is Monograms 1937 Ford " Fat Fender" Street rod. Back then I decided to cut the doors out which I did and I did a nice job. That is far as I got.
Recently, I got this kit back out and started figuring out how I will make the hinges. My issue is not installing a hing
in the door,but the frame side. There is very little room. I think that's maybe the reason why I stopped when I was 27 and put everything back in the Box and walked away from it. Sooooo my question is, how would you approach this ? I am currently tinkering around
with small plastic hinges we'd use for
RC Airplanes (Dubro).I am not getting the results I want. I thought maybe you could give me a idea for car models like this.
I will add that I did try making hinged from small paperclips 📎. Anyway I understand you are a very busy person.

Great tip, always cool when something can be repurposed for the model room. I must say tho, I was a bit surprised by the dust on that fantastic build. I was not sure if that was intentional, or the result of time. Knowing the history of your great projects, I would find it very interesting to see how you store/display your work.

That looks like aluminum tie wire used by the power company to secure primary lines to ceramic insulators. Is it aluminum? I also use the bamboo sticks with alligator clips, but I took a turntable base and put a circle of wood on it with eighth inch holes drilled across it in a grid pattern. That goes in my spray booth. No tipping and I can spin it to get to all sides of an object.
Yes, it is aluminum. Your rig with the turntable sounds like a really good solution.
The first stands you made and cannot pick up by dome like base. How about taking out the wire and grind off that center 'nubby', turn the base upside down and rewire it. Easier to pick up, maybe.............cheers.
I just use wires to hang when I'm spray painting bodies then hang them to cure overnight....
What Size ia the wire you used? What is a cheap pully you can buy?
The wire I use most is 3/16" diameter. As for bases, any weighted base with a hole in the center will do. Check out lawn mower repair shops or hardware stores. I got mine over 30 years so I'm not up to date on what's available today. Please share here what you find!
