I find this quite sad. There prob had to be a reason he turned to crime _again._ It's not that what he did is excusable (it isn't), but there prob had to be a reason. People like to villify ex-cons and also criminals, but nobody walks in someone's shoes or knows what drives people to crime. And ofc, not every ex-con or criminal is like Thomas. Case by case basis.

Speculation here, but getting $9 an hour at Walmart doesn’t support a drug habit. You do 13 years surrounded by negativity, work your ass off for a bit, lose your job for a bullshit reason, get wired 22k out of nowhere, he wouldn’t have known what to do, diligently avoid drugs 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a year and in a 10 minute moment of impulse or weakness, you’re off and running again, with no strength to fight it nor any strategies or help. If he was doing banks to support a habit for the first stint, he only got off drugs due to their expense inside of prison. 22 grand gone quick and he knows no other way. Prison didn’t rehabilitate him, it just showed him how degenerate and corrupt the world can be, getting out only to have that idea confirmed to you by his firing, the odds were certainly not in his favour. I really just feel sorry for the guy. I don’t think anyone that sent him money is justified in being mad, everybody just wanted to see him succeed and it he didn’t dupe anyone. If you’re donating to anyone from a rough as guts background, fresh out with no skills, you know you’re taking a chance on them and you just hope it pays off. It’s the same as a 20$ bet at a casino on a bucks night. You hope with all your heart it pays out but you know the odds and can’t be mad. I’d be way more bummed that his life took that turn than that he blew my $20 (and 999 other peoples $20)
I once accidentally stole a water bottle from my school thinking they were giving them out for free when they were actually selling them for an event. At the time I thought the right thing to do was pay them back which I did but now I realize the correct action is for me to expel myself. This action is truly unforgivable.
I worked at Walmart when they started cracking down on associates for collecting recycling out of the parking lot trash cans. They collect and separate those cans so they to recycle and collect profit. Shortly after, they stopped letting customers/employees have cardboard boxes because it affected their profits using their bailer for recycling.
I didn't even know that places get profit for the bailer machine's usage. The place I work at actually just has the overnight crew load up the shelves with the products still in the packaging boxes (like, a box of Tide detergent having 2 or 4 bottles in the box), and during the day, the primary task for one of the jobs we have is to go around with a large gray bin on wheels, collect these boxes, and bring them up to the front of the store (between the door and the registers) and put them in another storage thing, so customers can take those empty boxes. I guess it might be cheaper to hire someone to collect the boxes and let customers use them than to have to buy huge bags to give to every customer (and more economical).
That's store by store. My place will give boxes to customers too, if they speak to a manager a day ahead of time. [Presumably they just do a lot of bales at our place or something].

A company would look at it like: We told him to do the carts, but instead he was trying to do another job at the same time as his current one. Really sucks that jobs would prefer you do less instead of more. Managers love to throw out the “That’s not your job” card all the time when they’re in the wrong.
Nah, this was straight up 'theft' in their eyes. Walmart views all trash on their property as theirs and will put it into a compactor/shredder so that no one can have it, not even dumpster divers. By cleaning up trash he was 'stealing' the trash they wanted to put into a compactor. walmart truly is that petty (source: used to work there, one of my coworkers was fired for eating a banana while we were tossing things into the compactor. He literally ate a banana out of the trash and they called it theft and fired him.)
I got fired from Dollar Store for donating items that would be thrown away. I did everything the way the training said: to have the organization’s tax number, and scan each item. Unfortunately, my manager was not trained properly, lost the tax number, and she didn’t scan every item. I was facing lawsuit, and had to pay $150 to dollar store. The items were holiday decorations that were priced at $0.01 each, but I was charged full price for the items. They probably spent more money taking me to court. The church I donated the items to used the decorations for children’s parties.
If he’d been offered a job rather than a large sum of money, things may have ended up with the “happy ending” everyone was looking to see. It’s not that he didn’t deserve the help that was given to him, but the help he received didn’t serve the right purpose. It’s like when large groups of people get together, haul all the materials needed to build a house or school or whatever to an impoverished place, and construct the building. That’s nice and all, but it would’ve been more helpful if they’d hired the people who live in the impoverished area to do the work and bought that materials needed from that area. The people would benefit more. Kind of like “give a man a fish, but teach a man to fish…”

I think it would have been better yes, I'm a recovering addict and the first time I was sober and got a big amout of money I got a psychological abstinence, vomited and everything.. However, I don't think just having a proper job makes all your trauma and problems go away. All the problems that you tend to ease with using. There's so much behind, so much work that needs to be done. Easy example; when u get really upset, angry whatever. You are used to turn to X-drug for comfort. How do u learn to cope with your emotions without it. The triggers and so on and so on. But, I agree. Might have been to better help, difficult to know for sure not knowing the whole situation.
As a cart pusher/receiver/associate/whatever that has been working at Walmart for the past 3 years, I want to add another takeaway. The job really does suck. Working in the hot summers, cold winters, and even rain and snow. Not good pay for all the all hard work done, and basically being treated like shit since were seen as grunts. In some cases more so than the people in the store. All I ask is that if you could, try to make our jobs a bit more easier by putting the carts in the right places and once in awhile thank us for our backbreaking work please. Oh try not to get in our way, thank you.

I had a relative that worked as a cart-pusher for Wally’s for a few years. It really messed up his back, and the horrible cold didn’t help (we lived in AK… bad winters). Absolutely wouldn’t recommend it. He got basically pennies for the physical labor he gave them.
I'm autistic so getting a job is a bit tough for me. I eventually went into a program that teaches you how to get a job and what not and they were able to get me a job at the grocery store near my house. It was a tough change. They were supposed to teach me multiple jobs such as stocking the shelves, janitorial work, backroom stuff and so on but one day they called me into the office and just told me to go home and not to come into work tomorrow. It wasn't until later that I called them and they straight up said I was fired despite not teaching me even half of what was expected and with no reason given. Their excuse was that they sent out paperwork explaining it all but that some how got lost.
That sucks that were treated in that way when you were just trying to do a job. I hope you find employers in the future who see the value in having you as a member of their team.
Here's a tip. If you ever get a job after making parole on a bank robbery conviction, follow every goddamn company rule to the letter. They took a big risk on hiring a crook, and you'll be gone as soon as they know you aren't reformed.
Ouch. Worst I had happen to me was when someone I thought was a friend at the time opened a campaign for his sick mom. He raised a few grand, next day he's showing off his fancy Rolex.
The thing about ex cons is that if they have spent an extended period of time behind bars, they become institutionalized. The people who donated to him actually enabled him to reoffend. The only constructive way to help Thomas was getting the man a decent paying job so that he could rely on himself, not handouts. He likely spent all that money quickly and fell back on old times to replenish it. It's just a shame guys like Thomas nearly always end up back behind bars.

4:13 a reasonable and accurate description of this shitty job that I too work (but not specifically at walmart) I also like how, at the end of describing what a person does working the job, there's actual footage of someone using one of the cart retrieving machines, I never see any store have one of those, just the place I work at and a walmart supercenter that I pretty much never go to (and only noticed it last time I went there)
Even with the machines the job is isn’t that better. Yeah of course better than pushing every single cart by hand, but sometimes the machines are broken or uncharged. Plus when it gets busy, the machine just can barely keep up. Take it from me as a cart pusher.
Speaking of Wal-Mart, I know this guy, who I went to school with, that actually works at our local Wal-Mart, also worked as a cart pusher, had something pretty bizarre happen to him, he was out doing his job and saw this Camper, that was parked there for a week or 2, and told his supervisors, they told him to knock on the door and ask to see what was up, well whenever he reached the door, he knocked and the door slowly opened up, he peaked inside and saw the owner, who was dead the entire time, just laying on the floor with a pool of blood around him, they literally just told him to get back to work and continue with his day, as usual

I can speak a little to addictions...they're not easy to quit. Any sort of addiction will ALWAYS come back to haunt you, no matter how long you've quit for. I constantly get fits or attacks and it can drive me a little bonkers sometimes just trying to find a way to cope and move on. Problem is, it doesn't take much to trigger a relapse, you know? Especially if the addiction you're facing is EVERYWHERE. You might as well never leave your house...but it can be beaten and you just got to have a little faith and patience. Never give up.

I got fired from Walmart because I got attacked by another employee and all I did was flip her off after she hit me. No customers around. Literally just like that. Place sucks.
Idk I feel bad for the guy still. Whatever led him to robbery in the first place isn't gonna magically go away just because he spent a few years locked up. Nobody deserves to be treated like how he was by Walmart, no matter what they did! This person isn't trying to justify any behavior, they are just stating a fact. This impacts anyone who is incarcerated regardless of the reason. If there was more focus on rehabilitation /in general/ there wouldn't be as many reoffences. Yes, he did what he did and it's obviously not OK!. But there is unfortunately a larger systemic issue at hand that is often ignored. Maybe if he had better help and resources initially, it wouldn't have happened again.
As a former Upper Manager at Walmart for Division 31 and then 1, and who was even trained at the Belly of the Beast in the Home Office in Arkansas, I can attest that Walmart does not care about you. Ever since they went Public, they literally Buried Sam Walton and figuratively buried his business culture of People before Profits and America First. Now it’s Profit over People and Walmarts 3 Golden Rules: 1.) “Respect the Individual” 2.) “Service to the Customer” 3.) “Strive for Excellence” is now just an internal Marketing Campaign towards it’s Employees… I mean “Associates”. So yeah, EVEN if it’s ONLY $5 that was lost, that was $5 that COULD HAVE gone to the Home Office. Gotta make sure we tighten that belt to very last notch! So if a few People or even Associates gets squeezed out to do so, gotta make Profits! Also, how did Walmart get that “Written Confession” from Sam Smith? Well, let me tell you that is one HUGE self screw Walmart gets you to do to yourself! You see, when working for Walmart, you get 3 chances to screw up before they can fire you and have all their bases covered from wrongful termination lawsuits. First you get a “Verbal Warning”, then a “WRITTEN Warning”, and Finally a “D-Day” or “Determination Day”. That last one is where they get you to work yourself over. So apparently, Smith was already had the First and Second “Coaching for Improvement” and was on his D-Day. And what they do in D-Day is that they send you home to write an “Apology” letter for your error (rightly or wrongly) and how you will Improve going forward. They also tell you that based on how good your letter is, they’ll either Decide to keep you or Terminate you. So if you want to keep your Job, OF COURSE you’re going to write out the BEST D-Day Letter possible, right? But the greasy thing about that Letter is, is that it’s Walmarts way of getting a hold of a Signed “Confession” you wrote out yourself. So IF Walmart Fires you for any reason, you’ll have a Mountain to climb in order to Sue them for Wrongful Termination or other Shenanigans they do because they’ll hold up your Confession in court and say that letter is “Proof” and a “Self Admission” to your pattern of “Bad Faith Behaviors” in the past. I’ve seen it myself and you all seen it in that News Clip in this Video. Pretty disgusting tactic in my opinion! So my advice to any Walmart Associates out there who might be facing a D-Day, DO NOT fall for that trick and write an “Apology letter”. They MAY or MAY NOT Terminate you for refusing to do so, but that is one less piece of Armor you can give them if you have to take them to court or report them to the State Labor Board. You can then also say (which may or may not work depending on your State) that they Terminated you because you refused to create and sign a False Confession in order to keep your Job. This isnt something you solve in 24 hours or just with money. Mental health is a struggle and some people need a lot more help than others. But guess what? And thats why individuals like him have no hope of going forward because they dont have the mental fortitude and self checks that most of us have.

I knew this guy who was told to throw out a bunch of stuff and included was out of date candy, while throwing it out he opened a bag and ate a few skittles and then threw the rest out. He got caught on cctv and got fired for theft...
That *is* theft. You have to report thrown out candy. What he did was the equivalent of stealing. If he can’t be trusted with expired candy then he can’t be trusted around the register.

I'll see your theft and raise you firing your hole backroom unloading team over the course of a 2 month period as a new manager (who I found out later ruined her previous store and was transfered because are current manager was getting a promo) even tho the previous manager who ran my store and another one at the same time because are store was doing so good never had any problems or issues with the backroom team and even came back and told us personally how good all of us where doing and to keep it up, only to replace the hole loading team with temps by the new manager. Found out later tho by one of the last loaders from the original group I was with before he got fired that it was a complete shit show when they brought on a bunch of temps. That brought a smile to my face seeing as I was fired without explanation because the supervisor conducting the meeting was interrupted by the new manager when about to explain why I was being fired to only say you know why you are being fired and then fired me.
When the bags of chips pop at work, i warn the customer's the bag is open. Before I claims them out, I eat some. I would love to be fired. The chips sometimes pop at the mountain store I work at because of the altitude.
I work at a walmart, you cannot do that. Taking anything from the stores premises you don't own and didn't purchase is against walmart policy. You can get fired for picking up a penny in the parking lot on your day off even lol.

I was once in the wrong side of the law, I was in prison for about 6 years which I’ve been released in 2009. Never got any help, the society isn’t ready to accept or to give 2nd chances. In order to have a job I just can’t talk about my past or even have a small conversation about it with anyone, I had to force myself to forget… Only close people knows about my dark past. Sometimes it is hard but never stopped working even if I am sick. Watching this made me a bit mad because I had no one to help me when I was out, reintegration is only a word which has no meaning at all. Instead of giving him money, they should have giving him a JOB! If you do the crime, now you must do the time.
Walmart fired my husband after he put in 10 years of hard work for them, getting their deli and online grocery/order areas into tip top shape after the upper manager stopped giving a crap. They "really didn't want to fired him" but apparently us getting snowed in and not being able to walk to Walmart/drive for literally 2 days meant he just didn't want his job. They also had a list of 70 other long-term associates they started firing off because clearly they just want to stop paying so much to their loyal employees. Well, all I can hope is that karma bites them in the ass. What a happy new year to us. -_-

I knew it had to do with drugs. I effing knew it. I was about to comment that that was my assumption but then the video said he struggled with heroin and mental health issues and that confirmed it for me. I’m a drug addict in recovery and any time I see someone blow through huge amounts of money like that, and then commit acts of pure desperation, it reminds me of what my active addiction was like. You sell anything of value that you own, then you start looking outward for your funds. It’s pretty easy to spot. Especially if people are hellbent on getting cash vs gift cards or other forms of currency. Like if someone asks you to help them with some money but it HAS to be cash. I hope he’s doing better. It changes your brain chemistry forever, so it will always be a battle. I still have to remind myself every day that life in active addiction is a living hell and not worth it An example of another addict committing a desperate act, was my manager back when I was a server. 3 of us turned our money in to him for the night but he didn’t count it and file it like usual. He just told us to leave it in the office. Then he disabled the cameras. Another manager asked why we just left the money there and we told him what happened with the first manager. When the 2nd manager counted the money, he realized $50 was missing from each stack. When I went outside to get in my car, I saw the first manager talking to a guy in a blacked out car in the back of the lot. The only time you do something that desperate is if you’re about to be dopesick. They were able to fix the cameras and saw that he took the money but for whatever reason, he wasn’t fired. I wasn’t an angel at that time either, I was using too, but I could’ve been fired for what he did. It’s incredible what addiction will make you do Edit: That first manager was a known user so I wasn’t just assuming he took our money to buy drugs, he actually confessed to it.
Don’t want to be that guy, but this is why you don’t just hand money over to any “victim” story you hear. A lot of people are just scammers, and the media doesn’t tell the truth unless it helps push their politics.

I don't think this guy was a scammer, he didn't ask people to donate. And I honestly believe he was on the straight and narrow at first. I think the sad truth is that most ex-cons like this guy need a hell of a lot more support than just money in order to re-adjust to life outside. It's a struggle to adapt, and many people fall prey to a life of crime and drug addiction to solve their problems when trying to get by when their task of re-integrating seems impossible. Sadly, given his learning disability that likely impairs his judgement as well, he was probably doomed to repeat his prior mistakes. He needed a social worker and maybe a therapist, not cash. I don't think he was beyond help - I even think he was on the right path at first. But throwing cash at this guy did nothing but soothe the consciences of the people who donated. Truly helping people is more difficult than just donating a few dollars. That said, I'm sure there are some people out there who need money and would genuinely put it to good use. If you feel like donating to someone on the off chance they're one of those, I think that's fine. Just don't delude yourself into thinking you know for sure that they're good and genuine. It's pretty much always going to be a gamble.
I worked in a hotel doing events (mostly corporate conferences) and at the end of the day I would collects giant bag fulls of soda cans and plastic water bottles, but when i tried to leave with one to redeem, I was told I could not because I was "profiting off of the hotel." Just weird rules...
I'm all for helping ex-cons get jobs, and what Walmart did was flat-out wrong.... but having worked in bank branches I knew immediately where this story was headed. Armed bank robbery takes a different type of mindset to commit. It's high risk, low reward & has severe federal sentences in the US.... so when you're taking this much risk you're usually equally desperate for cash to fund a habit. And the absolute worst thing anyone could do to a recovering addict only a few months out of jail _and_ obviously lacking in money management skills is _deposit $22k into their account in one hit._ He might have had half a chance if he got it in small monthly payments over a year or two.
I could really use some of that internet support right now. I'm living in an old van with my cat. Got a back injury on the job but had to go back to work before it completely healed now. I'm not disabled enough to get disability because places are supposed to accommodate me but if I tell them about my back problems they don't hire me. And that's just my worst injury. My left hand, left arm, both shoulders and both knees have torn tendons. And my left hand only has about half strength because of it. At this point I'm just taking care of my cat, after that I'm calling it quits.
I feel for you, I am a recent amputee so I am in rehab to relearn how to do everything and I know what a hit that can take on employment. From what I know about applying for disability in the US (not sure where you are from), there are two types ssi and ssdi. Ssdi is easier to get if you had a steady job prior to being injured which is what it sounds like but you also sound like you qualify for ssi which is for low income. Try ssdi first, you can apply online. If you get turned down try ssi but I'd recommend getting a lawyer because even people who are obviously very disabled get turned down multiple times, especially if you don't have a lawyer. But keep trying, they do award it eventually to the persistent. The lawyer only gets paid if you win, they would get a portion of your payout per month until the billing hours are covered. There are many programs to help the disabled so once you have that designation from either ssi or ssdi you can get all kinds of assistance. If you haven't already anyone can get emergency food stamps for 3 months to help with food right now and you may be able to get them on a more permanent basis. Look up disability services for your city and state, they may provide additional help past the federal govt. Also look into services for the homeless, there are so many programs but people don't usually know about them unless they seek them out. Good luck, I hope that helps and even if you don't live in the US there is probably something similar for the diasbled/homeless where you live.

It does sound ridiculous. However, as someone who worked at a WalMart in years gone by, I totally wouldn't put it past them. I believe it depends on the actual location. I've heard of people having great experiences at WalMart but acknowledge that their experience was rare and not the norm.

This reminds me of the teenager Anthony stokes, who was denied a second heart transplant. He was noncompliant after his first heart transplant and it was basically his own fault that the first transplanted heart failed. He didn’t go to the doctor or take the medication to stop rejection. His mother went to the media and said they were being discriminated against. People were calling the hospital and it’s staff racist and all other names. Two years later, Anthony went on to shoot at an 81 year old lady, steal her car, engage in a car chase, hit a pedestrian, then die in a car accident. To me, it would have been better that the heart go to someone else. Who knows what other crimes were committed by this monster and who knows who died while waiting for a heart that would have at the very least not been a criminal with victims.

A buddy of mine (both of us volunteer firefighters) was fired from Walmart in response to a fire call. There was a huge backlash against Walmart for his firing from the community which led to Walmart "offering" him his job back at a lower pay rate, however my buddy was already hired by a different employer at a better pay rate than he was initially making at Walmart and he said that Walmart firing him was the best thing for the community as a whole.
I think Walmart made a mistake hiring a felon and then found anything to get rid of him. Happened to me and multiple ex coworkers not just from Walmart.
sadly that is what happens when most felons get hired. when I work at panera a girl I used to work with (she was release from prison I wanna say back in like 2017? she told me) it was a few months after I was working there for like 3 months. someone stole close to like $70 out of the till, GM didn't even bother to check the cameras just fire the girl on the spot. sadly maybe like 4 weeks later it happen again, the GM found the Real culprit and tried to get the other girl back
That 22k probably what really screwed him in the end. He felt into the drug addiction fast with that easy money. A lot of drugs addict feel guilty to ask for help... imagine if you raise a go fund me and expose his whole criminal record to the internet... its just can get worst... some time act of kindness need to be done under the radar so the person we try to help get less pressure from not succeeding the first attempt. I haven't finished watching yet, but having friends that collect cans and bottles I know walmart is a collection center for said bottles. If he is taking empty bottles from the service desk, he isn't recycling, he is stealing bottles that have already been recycled and redeemed for cash. Which is pretty skeezy even if it only makes him 5$. Not to mention that's the kind of stuff that chokes out the recycling industry. It's already hardly profitable with almost zero incentive to have people recycle. If you have recycling companies paying twice per bottle that's gonna take a huge hit over time on the efficiency of recycling processes.
I worked a gas station where at the end of the day, if an employee took a single penny from the "take a penny, leave a penny" tray, they could be fired. This because of theft. Apparently there ARE rules that say, roughly, anything that is not on a persons body or a personal possession is considered the property of the business or building owner. Blows my mind

Speculation here, but getting $9 an hour at Walmart doesn’t support a drug habit.
You do 13 years surrounded by negativity, work your ass off for a bit, lose your job for a bullshit reason, get wired 22k out of nowhere, he wouldn’t have known what to do, diligently avoid drugs 24 hours a day 7 days a week for a year and in a 10 minute moment of impulse or weakness, you’re off and running again, with no strength to fight it nor any strategies or help.
If he was doing banks to support a habit for the first stint, he only got off drugs due to their expense inside of prison.
22 grand gone quick and he knows no other way. Prison didn’t rehabilitate him, it just showed him how degenerate and corrupt the world can be, getting out only to have that idea confirmed to you by his firing, the odds were certainly not in his favour.
I really just feel sorry for the guy. I don’t think anyone that sent him money is justified in being mad, everybody just wanted to see him succeed and it he didn’t dupe anyone.

I worked at Walmart when they started cracking down on associates for collecting recycling out of the parking lot trash cans. They collect and separate those cans so they to recycle and collect profit. Shortly after, they stopped letting customers/employees have cardboard boxes because it affected their profits using their bailer for recycling.
I didn't even know that places get profit for the bailer machine's usage. The place I work at actually just has the overnight crew load up the shelves with the products still in the packaging boxes (like, a box of Tide detergent having 2 or 4 bottles in the box), and during the day, the primary task for one of the jobs we have is to go around with a large gray bin on wheels, collect these boxes, and bring them up to the front of the store (between the door and the registers) and put them in another storage thing, so customers can take those empty boxes. I guess it might be cheaper to hire someone to collect the boxes and let customers use them than to have to buy huge bags to give to every customer (and more economical).

Nah, this was straight up 'theft' in their eyes. Walmart views all trash on their property as theirs and will put it into a compactor/shredder so that no one can have it, not even dumpster divers. By cleaning up trash he was 'stealing' the trash they wanted to put into a compactor. walmart truly is that petty (source: used to work there, one of my coworkers was fired for eating a banana while we were tossing things into the compactor. He literally ate a banana out of the trash and they called it theft and fired him.)

I got fired from Dollar Store for donating items that would be thrown away. I did everything the way the training said: to have the organization’s tax number, and scan each item. Unfortunately, my manager was not trained properly, lost the tax number, and she didn’t scan every item. I was facing lawsuit, and had to pay $150 to dollar store. The items were holiday decorations that were priced at $0.01 each, but I was charged full price for the items. They probably spent more money taking me to court. The church I donated the items to used the decorations for children’s parties.
That is so unfair. I’m so sorry that happened to you. I feel like it’s so messed up it could almost be a Bible story.

If he’d been offered a job rather than a large sum of money, things may have ended up with the “happy ending” everyone was looking to see. It’s not that he didn’t deserve the help that was given to him, but the help he received didn’t serve the right purpose. It’s like when large groups of people get together, haul all the materials needed to build a house or school or whatever to an impoverished place, and construct the building. That’s nice and all, but it would’ve been more helpful if they’d hired the people who live in the impoverished area to do the work and bought that materials needed from that area. The people would benefit more. Kind of like “give a man a fish, but teach a man to fish…”

I think it would have been better yes, I'm a recovering addict and the first time I was sober and got a big amout of money I got a psychological abstinence, vomited and everything.. However, I don't think just having a proper job makes all your trauma and problems go away. All the problems that you tend to ease with using. There's so much behind, so much work that needs to be done. Easy example; when u get really upset, angry whatever. You are used to turn to X-drug for comfort. How do u learn to cope with your emotions without it. The triggers and so on and so on. But, I agree. Might have been to better help, difficult to know for sure not knowing the whole situation.

As a cart pusher/receiver/associate/whatever that has been working at Walmart for the past 3 years, I want to add another takeaway. The job really does suck. Working in the hot summers, cold winters, and even rain and snow. Not good pay for all the all hard work done, and basically being treated like shit since were seen as grunts. In some cases more so than the people in the store. All I ask is that if you could, try to make our jobs a bit more easier by putting the carts in the right places and once in awhile thank us for our backbreaking work please. Oh try not to get in our way, thank you.

I had a relative that worked as a cart-pusher for Wally’s for a few years. It really messed up his back, and the horrible cold didn’t help (we lived in AK… bad winters). Absolutely wouldn’t recommend it. He got basically pennies for the physical labor he gave them.
I always tell my new Trainees that a job is not worth your life.
I'm autistic so getting a job is a bit tough for me. I eventually went into a program that teaches you how to get a job and what not and they were able to get me a job at the grocery store near my house. It was a tough change. They were supposed to teach me multiple jobs such as stocking the shelves, janitorial work, backroom stuff and so on but one day they called me into the office and just told me to go home and not to come into work tomorrow. It wasn't until later that I called them and they straight up said I was fired despite not teaching me even half of what was expected and with no reason given. Their excuse was that they sent out paperwork explaining it all but that some how got lost.

The thing about ex cons is that if they have spent an extended period of time behind bars, they become institutionalized. The people who donated to him actually enabled him to reoffend. The only constructive way to help Thomas was getting the man a decent paying job so that he could rely on himself, not handouts. He likely spent all that money quickly and fell back on old times to replenish it. It's just a shame guys like Thomas nearly always end up back behind bars.

I also like how, at the end of describing what a person does working the job, there's actual footage of someone using one of the cart retrieving machines, I never see any store have one of those, just the place I work at and a walmart supercenter that I pretty much never go to (and only noticed it last time I went there)
Even with the machines the job is isn’t that better. Yeah of course better than pushing every single cart by hand, but sometimes the machines are broken or uncharged. Plus when it gets busy, the machine just can barely keep up. Take it from me as a cart pusher.

Speaking of Wal-Mart, I know this guy, who I went to school with, that actually works at our local Wal-Mart, also worked as a cart pusher, had something pretty bizarre happen to him, he was out doing his job and saw this Camper, that was parked there for a week or 2, and told his supervisors, they told him to knock on the door and ask to see what was up, well whenever he reached the door, he knocked and the door slowly opened up, he peaked inside and saw the owner, who was dead the entire time, just laying on the floor with a pool of blood around him, they literally just told him to get back to work and continue with his day, as usual

I can speak a little to addictions...they're not easy to quit. Any sort of addiction will ALWAYS come back to haunt you, no matter how long you've quit for. I constantly get fits or attacks and it can drive me a little bonkers sometimes just trying to find a way to cope and move on. Problem is, it doesn't take much to trigger a relapse, you know? Especially if the addiction you're facing is EVERYWHERE. You might as well never leave your house...but it can be beaten and you just got to have a little faith and patience. Never give up.
$5.10 for recycling, sounds about right. I used to recycle cans and honestly its not even worth the effort.

If there was more focus on rehabilitation /in general/ there wouldn't be as many reoffences. Yes, he did what he did and it's obviously not OK!. But there is unfortunately a larger systemic issue at hand that is often ignored. Maybe if he had better help and resources initially, it wouldn't have happened again.

As a former Upper Manager at Walmart for Division 31 and then 1, and who was even trained at the Belly of the Beast in the Home Office in Arkansas, I can attest that Walmart does not care about you.
Ever since they went Public, they literally Buried Sam Walton and figuratively buried his business culture of People before Profits and America First. Now it’s Profit over People and Walmarts 3 Golden Rules:

You see, when working for Walmart, you get 3 chances to screw up before they can fire you and have all their bases covered from wrongful termination lawsuits. First you get a “Verbal Warning”, then a “WRITTEN Warning”, and Finally a “D-Day” or “Determination Day”. That last one is where they get you to work yourself over.
So apparently, Smith was already had the First and Second “Coaching for Improvement” and was on his D-Day. And what they do in D-Day is that they send you home to write an “Apology” letter for your error (rightly or wrongly) and how you will Improve going forward. They also tell you that based on how good your letter is, they’ll either Decide to keep you or Terminate you. So if you want to keep your Job, OF COURSE you’re going to write out the BEST D-Day Letter possible, right?
But the greasy thing about that Letter is, is that it’s Walmarts way of getting a hold of a Signed “Confession” you wrote out yourself. So IF Walmart Fires you for any reason, you’ll have a Mountain to climb in order to Sue them for Wrongful Termination or other Shenanigans they do because they’ll hold up your Confession in court and say that letter is “Proof” and a “Self Admission” to your pattern of “Bad Faith Behaviors” in the past. I’ve seen it myself and you all seen it in that News Clip in this Video. Pretty disgusting tactic in my opinion!
So my advice to any Walmart Associates out there who might be facing a D-Day, DO NOT fall for that trick and write an “Apology letter”. They MAY or MAY NOT Terminate you for refusing to do so, but that is one less piece of Armor you can give them if you have to take them to court or report them to the State Labor Board. You can then also say (which may or may not work depending on your State) that they Terminated you because you refused to create and sign a False Confession in order to keep your Job. Don’t let these Corporations make you help them Screw Yourself Over! 😤

He got caught on cctv and got fired for theft...
That *is* theft. You have to report thrown out candy. What he did was the equivalent of stealing. If he can’t be trusted with expired candy then he can’t be trusted around the register.

I'll see your theft and raise you firing your hole backroom unloading team over the course of a 2 month period as a new manager (who I found out later ruined her previous store and was transfered because are current manager was getting a promo) even tho the previous manager who ran my store and another one at the same time because are store was doing so good never had any problems or issues with the backroom team and even came back and told us personally how good all of us where doing and to keep it up, only to replace the hole loading team with temps by the new manager. Found out later tho by one of the last loaders from the original group I was with before he got fired that it was a complete shit show when they brought on a bunch of temps.
That brought a smile to my face seeing as I was fired without explanation because the supervisor conducting the meeting was interrupted by the new manager when about to explain why I was being fired to only say you know why you are being fired and then fired me.
When the bags of chips pop at work, i warn the customer's the bag is open. Before I claims them out, I eat some. I would love to be fired. The chips sometimes pop at the mountain store I work at because of the altitude.
I work at a walmart, you cannot do that. Taking anything from the stores premises you don't own and didn't purchase is against walmart policy. You can get fired for picking up a penny in the parking lot on your day off even lol.

I'm a recovering addict, 5 months sober, and oh yeah, dont ever give us that much money all at once.
I was once in the wrong side of the law, I was in prison for about 6 years which I’ve been released in 2009. Never got any help, the society isn’t ready to accept or to give 2nd chances. In order to have a job I just can’t talk about my past or even have a small conversation about it with anyone, I had to force myself to forget… Only close people knows about my dark past. Sometimes it is hard but never stopped working even if I am sick. Watching this made me a bit mad because I had no one to help me when I was out, reintegration is only a word which has no meaning at all.
Instead of giving him money, they should have giving him a JOB! If you do the crime, now you must do the time.
Prison in the US is so strange.. instead of reforming it’s just a time out for adults.

Walmart fired my husband after he put in 10 years of hard work for them, getting their deli and online grocery/order areas into tip top shape after the upper manager stopped giving a crap. They "really didn't want to fired him" but apparently us getting snowed in and not being able to walk to Walmart/drive for literally 2 days meant he just didn't want his job. They also had a list of 70 other long-term associates they started firing off because clearly they just want to stop paying so much to their loyal employees. Well, all I can hope is that karma bites them in the ass. What a happy new year to us. -_-

I knew it had to do with drugs. I effing knew it. I was about to comment that that was my assumption but then the video said he struggled with heroin and mental health issues and that confirmed it for me. I’m a drug addict in recovery and any time I see someone blow through huge amounts of money like that, and then commit acts of pure desperation, it reminds me of what my active addiction was like. You sell anything of value that you own, then you start looking outward for your funds. It’s pretty easy to spot. Especially if people are hellbent on getting cash vs gift cards or other forms of currency. Like if someone asks you to help them with some money but it HAS to be cash. I hope he’s doing better. It changes your brain chemistry forever, so it will always be a battle. I still have to remind myself every day that life in active addiction is a living hell and not worth it
An example of another addict committing a desperate act, was my manager back when I was a server. 3 of us turned our money in to him for the night but he didn’t count it and file it like usual. He just told us to leave it in the office. Then he disabled the cameras. Another manager asked why we just left the money there and we told him what happened with the first manager. When the 2nd manager counted the money, he realized $50 was missing from each stack. When I went outside to get in my car, I saw the first manager talking to a guy in a blacked out car in the back of the lot. The only time you do something that desperate is if you’re about to be dopesick. They were able to fix the cameras and saw that he took the money but for whatever reason, he wasn’t fired. I wasn’t an angel at that time either, I was using too, but I could’ve been fired for what he did. It’s incredible what addiction will make you do
Edit: That first manager was a known user so I wasn’t just assuming he took our money to buy drugs, he actually confessed to it.

I don't think this guy was a scammer, he didn't ask people to donate. And I honestly believe he was on the straight and narrow at first.
I think the sad truth is that most ex-cons like this guy need a hell of a lot more support than just money in order to re-adjust to life outside. It's a struggle to adapt, and many people fall prey to a life of crime and drug addiction to solve their problems when trying to get by when their task of re-integrating seems impossible. Sadly, given his learning disability that likely impairs his judgement as well, he was probably doomed to repeat his prior mistakes. He needed a social worker and maybe a therapist, not cash.
I don't think he was beyond help - I even think he was on the right path at first. But throwing cash at this guy did nothing but soothe the consciences of the people who donated. Truly helping people is more difficult than just donating a few dollars.
That said, I'm sure there are some people out there who need money and would genuinely put it to good use. If you feel like donating to someone on the off chance they're one of those, I think that's fine. Just don't delude yourself into thinking you know for sure that they're good and genuine. It's pretty much always going to be a gamble.

I worked in a hotel doing events (mostly corporate conferences) and at the end of the day I would collects giant bag fulls of soda cans and plastic water bottles, but when i tried to leave with one to redeem, I was told I could not because I was "profiting off of the hotel." Just weird rules...

I'm all for helping ex-cons get jobs, and what Walmart did was flat-out wrong.... but having worked in bank branches I knew immediately where this story was headed. Armed bank robbery takes a different type of mindset to commit. It's high risk, low reward & has severe federal sentences in the US.... so when you're taking this much risk you're usually equally desperate for cash to fund a habit. And the absolute worst thing anyone could do to a recovering addict only a few months out of jail _and_ obviously lacking in money management skills is _deposit $22k into their account in one hit._ He might have had half a chance if he got it in small monthly payments over a year or two.
I could really use some of that internet support right now. I'm living in an old van with my cat. Got a back injury on the job but had to go back to work before it completely healed now. I'm not disabled enough to get disability because places are supposed to accommodate me but if I tell them about my back problems they don't hire me. And that's just my worst injury. My left hand, left arm, both shoulders and both knees have torn tendons. And my left hand only has about half strength because of it.
At this point I'm just taking care of my cat, after that I'm calling it quits.
I feel for you, I am a recent amputee so I am in rehab to relearn how to do everything and I know what a hit that can take on employment. From what I know about applying for disability in the US (not sure where you are from), there are two types ssi and ssdi. Ssdi is easier to get if you had a steady job prior to being injured which is what it sounds like but you also sound like you qualify for ssi which is for low income. Try ssdi first, you can apply online. If you get turned down try ssi but I'd recommend getting a lawyer because even people who are obviously very disabled get turned down multiple times, especially if you don't have a lawyer. But keep trying, they do award it eventually to the persistent. The lawyer only gets paid if you win, they would get a portion of your payout per month until the billing hours are covered. There are many programs to help the disabled so once you have that designation from either ssi or ssdi you can get all kinds of assistance. If you haven't already anyone can get emergency food stamps for 3 months to help with food right now and you may be able to get them on a more permanent basis. Look up disability services for your city and state, they may provide additional help past the federal govt. Also look into services for the homeless, there are so many programs but people don't usually know about them unless they seek them out. Good luck, I hope that helps and even if you don't live in the US there is probably something similar for the diasbled/homeless where you live.

Low income = more crime. Why? Because there is nothing else a broke person can do. They have families to support, people they love, a life they want to live… but money is freedom. You can’t do ANYTHING without it.
The way criminals are portrayed in popular media is incredibly inaccurate. These people aren’t soulless monsters, they’re just truly desperate.
None of this would have happened if Walmart had cared about their employees. A few changes in policy won’t change anything- the whole structure needs to be re-evaluated so that workers can have a piece of the pie.

It does sound ridiculous. However, as someone who worked at a WalMart in years gone by, I totally wouldn't put it past them. I believe it depends on the actual location. I've heard of people having great experiences at WalMart but acknowledge that their experience was rare and not the norm.

This reminds me of the teenager Anthony stokes, who was denied a second heart transplant. He was noncompliant after his first heart transplant and it was basically his own fault that the first transplanted heart failed. He didn’t go to the doctor or take the medication to stop rejection. His mother went to the media and said they were being discriminated against. People were calling the hospital and it’s staff racist and all other names. Two years later, Anthony went on to shoot at an 81 year old lady, steal her car, engage in a car chase, hit a pedestrian, then die in a car accident. To me, it would have been better that the heart go to someone else. Who knows what other crimes were committed by this monster and who knows who died while waiting for a heart that would have at the very least not been a criminal with victims.

A buddy of mine (both of us volunteer firefighters) was fired from Walmart in response to a fire call. There was a huge backlash against Walmart for his firing from the community which led to Walmart "offering" him his job back at a lower pay rate, however my buddy was already hired by a different employer at a better pay rate than he was initially making at Walmart and he said that Walmart firing him was the best thing for the community as a whole.

That 22k probably what really screwed him in the end. He felt into the drug addiction fast with that easy money. A lot of drugs addict feel guilty to ask for help... imagine if you raise a go fund me and expose his whole criminal record to the internet... its just can get worst... some time act of kindness need to be done under the radar so the person we try to help get less pressure from not succeeding the first attempt. I haven't finished watching yet, but having friends that collect cans and bottles I know walmart is a collection center for said bottles. If he is taking empty bottles from the service desk, he isn't recycling, he is stealing bottles that have already been recycled and redeemed for cash. Which is pretty skeezy even if it only makes him 5$.
Not to mention that's the kind of stuff that chokes out the recycling industry. It's already hardly profitable with almost zero incentive to have people recycle. If you have recycling companies paying twice per bottle that's gonna take a huge hit over time on the efficiency of recycling processes.
