It's great to see a big name director and actors take such a risk to create such an engaging and intelligent and creative film. I saw it maybe 2 years ago....and I still think about it. Certain scenes PERFECTLY captured not just the look, but the FEEL, of an anxiety dream. In fact, I've never seen a film that so perfectly captures the *_feel_* of dreams. Inception is amazing, but real dreams aren't quite like that. But Mother perfectly conjured that _feeling._

Thank you. Why does it have to be about the Bible? I didn’t pick up ANY of the religious imagery when I first watched and I still love it. Actually watched it for the 3rd time last night and I’m starting to like it less now that I know what aronovsky was going for. Even in interviews and articles all I read about is the fricken BIBLE! What else was he trying to say? There is so much commentary on society and the world in general and I feel like no one is talking about it.

I’ve studied cinematography for 3 years and when a movie really messes with your feelings then it’s a good one. The movie has affected its audience like it should. I felt like suffocating, overpowered and claustrophobic. Sure those feelings don’t feel nice but it has held you in its grips an you just don’t let it flow away like any other movie that you’ve forgotten 7 minutes after watching it. The symbolism is also AMAZING, almost everything has a meaning and when u dig more into it and get to know the director meant the whole ordeal in a biblical context it gets even better. I see more details and metaphors each time. Mainstream audience will find this a bad movie, like expected tbh. People don’t like “different” things, they want to feel safe with things they already are familiar with. And it’s not a bash, it’s just how it is. I could go on but I feel like my comment is already long enough. It’s just a gem of a movie that people can’t accept yet. (The movie really made me say “what the fuck, did this really just happen!?” And I nearly never say that since most movies are really simple and you can just guess what’s about to happen, making it actually laughable.)

Backstage Bum I agree with much of what you say, but the Fountain is one of the worst movies ever made. Upon watching Mother! I got why people love/hate it, but felt it was trying too hard. You sit down and muse on it trying to find a deepen meaning and it turns in on itself, and maybe that is why he had to make it. Ultimately I think it is all about the creative process and letting go, which is what he did in making this, which may be the cool part. If he is a student filmmaker then he is the best the world has seen.

The entire movie is the Bible.
The character names of Him and Mother show that he is God and she is mother Earth.
The film goes through the arrival of Adam and Eve and the banishment from the garden, the conflict of Cain and Abel, the flood of Noah, the birth and death of Christ, leading to today and it's all from the perspective of Mother. Her house is our planet as she sees it.

Hurry Calls It's more impactful when you see it, but in the movie, He is narcissistic and more interested in admiration and others worshiping him like a celebrity than actually helping anyone. His written word (Bible) is all the help he provides. Seeing it this way, there's no doubt why so many critics were offended.

This comment section has been a chaotic meme farm for a long time, mostly because Chris has no presence here. When a content creator responds to comments, it creates this dynamic where people are generally more respectful in the comments because they know that the content creator might respond. When you never respond to comments, you get a comments section like this. I don't expect him to reply to every comment, he's got over a million subscribers. But if he would just pin a comment once in a while it would make a big difference. Chris is clearly very good with fan interaction, for example giving that guy a birthday shout out recently. He obviously cares about his fans. I just wish he would apply that mentality down here in the comments.

There's definitely that aspect that the writer pulls from. However, the film at its core, is mostly an environmental allegory... The woman being Mother Nature. The home being the Earth. The child being nature's resources.
Ending with Mother (Nature) spazzing out and destroying the home (Earth), after the def of her child (natural resources), who was consumed by the overpopulated guess of the house (mankind).
She even went to Earth's core (where the furnace was at), to set it ablaze.

But I've seen her in a number of films and the frame she operates in is not expanding. To be honest I can 100% understand why a large portion of the mainstream audience absolutely hated this movie. Your average movie goer doesn't do well with allegory, and this movie is DENSE with allegory, to the point where every single thing that happens is a metaphor for something else. Personally I didn't pick up on the mother earth thing when I first saw it, rather I saw Jennifer Lawrence's character as a representation of the gullibility, forgiveness, obedience and good will that religious institutions demand despite the evil people inflict upon one another, and most importantly the woman's perceived role in religion. One thing it makes extremely clear is the hypocrisy of the pressure that is put on women to bear children and be caretakers, while simultaneously being looked down upon and demeaned for their sexuality.

The person who wrote it is sick and clearly is biased to believe this is what Christianity is. A sick cult. Little did they know the person who wrote it was probably involved in some sort of satanism. Right (Now im crazy) This shit is real. If you read the gospel, you'd understand that Jesus wasn't just human. He was God in human form. He is God. What they were doing is satanic practice. Usually involves sexual practices and children (God's innocent creation). Jesus loves children and He told us we must become like them to enter the kingdom of heaven. Satan takes the innocence of a child, and destroys it. That is why there are so many pedophiles and satanic people in hollywood. (Pizzagate) You can say. it's not real. But you probably didn't know that Hillary Clinton was recently in court for mutilating and murdering a ten year old kid. You guys have no idea what's happening and whats real or not. Some of your favorite celebrities are part of it. Isaac Kappy warned us. Then all of a sudden he 'Committed Suicide' same with Kurt Cobain. You all need Jesus because this world is filled with unimaginable evil and you guys will be brainwashed to believe it's not by the people you admire on tv. Pretty sure the writer in this film is part of it all. Look up Isaac Kappy, he called the celebs out. He died days later.

I saw another video where it explains everything:
The main character represents God, Jennifer Lawrence- Earth.
Adam and Eve when they broke the diamond- the same that happened in the Bible with the Serpent.
Then when Cain kills Abel and afterwards the offspring of Adam and Eve, that's why there are a lot of people coming over.
Later on, the main character writes a book. It becomes best seller (the Bible) then there are many people who are looking for God, many that want to meet him.
Jennifer Lawrence has a baby (Jesus) and we know the story... he gets killed by the same people who supposedly where looking for God and so on...

Jacob Staten sure, but I'm talking about the final scene of the movie, where the God character creates a brand new *Earth* after the old one gets completely obliterated. There's nothing in the Bible saying that creation is a cyclic or trial-and-error type process. Although, that process of continuous rebirth after death *is* present in Hindu belief. Maybe the director mixed some aspects of different belief systems into the over-arching Christian one.

i know that arronsky has kinda confirmed that religion is the main idea of this movie. but i thought when i walked out of this movie. it was about creativity and celebrity worship and how society can take creative work and impose them self's on it to an unhealthy degree. like when one character says "his words are your words". or them taking a baby ie (someone's creative work) and consuming it. basically to the point of infatuation and destroying someones personal life (the home). or form the more literal view point, the side of the mother. having a kid and the fears of the outside world corrupting your child. like looting, rioting, war, and everything else on display in the house at he end of the film. but then only to find out, that this was only some kinda visual allegory of genesis is somewhat disappointing.

You completely misinterpret the allegory. "Mother" (Earth) creates a paradise for herself and "him" (God) - as she literally said in the movie. This paradise does not contain humans, (it is the perfect harmony of plants and animals). Then Adam, Eva, their children Cain and Abel and many more humans appear and are welcomed by god and destroy paradise and kill god's child, Jesus. Nonetheless God requests Earth to forgive humans for all they have done. Earth asks god, "Who are you?" and God answers, "I am I". Earth also asks God why he did what he did. He answers, "I create things." That self identification and definition of God is literally from the bible.

I hear a lot of people saying they have their specific interpretations of the movie (religion, how fame affects human interaction, the relationship between an artist and their creations), and I believe Aronofsky is telling telling a tale about all of this, but it's pretty darn obvious (to me, at least) that it follows the events of the Bible.
God creating the Earth which is a paradise before Man comes along (Ed Harris being Adam and maybe an Abraham-type figure, being the head of a large family; Michelle Pfiefer, Eve). Him walks with Man as God walks with God while Woman goes where she should not like Eve picks the forbidden fruit.
The house floods in time for it to rain outside, and then all of the guests flee; sorts like how the great flood killed (almost) all of mankind. mother finds a toad in the cellar in reference to the plagues in Exodus.
I could go on, but it seemed kind of obvious (which symbolism does need to be or else it's subtext). Thematically rich movie, nevertheless. I would be interested in watching this movie "Analyzed and Explained" by you.

Absolutely loved this film. It was such a trip. Everyone in the cinema seemed to hate it though. The girl next to me said "literally the worst thing I have ever seen", another guy walked out, another guy said "total waste of two hours". Maybe that's the mark of good art? People hating it. Otherwise you're just conforming to people's expectations and not moving the medium forward. If you're going to watch it, just go with it. It's so layered. Can be interpreted on so many levels.

This movie is already one of my favorite films of all time. It was technically well crafted and directed, it was extremely well acted by everyone involved, props go to Jennifer Lawrence being able to essentially carry this entire film by herself. I loved the visceral imagery of it and it had me gasping and shaking in the theater. No film has been able to accomplish that and this wasn't even a horror film. It was moving, it has powerful messages about religion, you can take certain perspectives from this film and this film we'll be talked about for a long time. I love this movie and even though it isn't subtle, it doesn't have to be, to be a great film and this movie certainly was a fantastic film!

You can see it as God, Mother Nature. But to me I also see it more simply as fame/Hollywood as Bardem and Lawrence is the embodiment of actors themselves. People in this comment section further prove the point of the film, where people adore the art of the artist but neglect the human behind the art. People take the artists creation and tear it apart to satisfy themselves. There's even a couple scenes representative of any given comment section where people are in battle. Then once they've taken all they can, a new actor comes along to replace them. I think it covers my view and your view in a weirdly effective way. I could not think of a better time for JLaw to have taken this role, oh the irony of reading these comments after seeing this film, I would hope it gives people some new perspective on fame and celebrities. It tackles a lot of themes and ideas that would be more clear on a second viewing. Interesting to see how mainstream audiences react to it, it's a doozy for sure.

Walter White but the art is not the artist... I get that I might be hard to hear your work torn apart by someone but that's life. Not everyone is going to like your work or you. People shouldn't skirt around their feelings and viewpoints on a piece of art just to spare the artists feelings (being mean just for the sake of it is another story).
People must learn that there's a difference between the art and the artist. One should be able to critic art without worry about the artists feelings.

What she means, is that we who study film are a privileged few, and when we get excited about cinema (which we clearly do, because it's one of the most exciting things a person can do, hands down), we tend to alienate the poor masses, who haven't the privilege of studying films. And just because you mentioned "mainstream audiences" - she thinks you said it condescendingly, which I don't think you did. But that's a matter of perspective. But she's probably bitter because she truly didn't understand the film (and I'm not just referring to the meaning of the film, but the aesthetics, the vibe, everything).

This Movie is GENIUS. I was raised a Catholic but have questioned my Faith... so this movie was perfect for me.
    -Kane and Abel
-Adam and Eve (Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer)... Eve always wanted to go into the "FORBIDEN" Room... they broke the Crystal (aka bit the Apple)
    -The Last Supper
-Flesh of my Flesh... Blood of my Blood
    -The Baby = Jesus Christ
-Jennifer Lawrence can be Mother Earth and Mother Mary at the same time
-Jarvier Bardem can be God OR the Devil (his ripped up photo has drawn-on Horns and goatee)
    -THE REVELATIONS (last War-Scene)
-Humanity killing eachother in the name of God, when God can no longer stop them.
    -Re-creation
This movie had fucking EVERY SINGLE THING IN ONE.... I honestly can't believe how much Hate is getting.
I even saw this with a friend, I can understand why he hated it, but he HATED IT. Even at the end he was saying "How long is this Movie?". Kept saying "What the fuck?"..."I can't wait for this to be Over".
I honestly LOVED LOVED LOVED this movie. I was one of the few who didn't hate "NOAH" because I liked scenes of Creation, and Kane and Abel... and Adam and Eve.... this was all that ON CRACK!!!!

I just watched "mother!" Chris, and I agree with everything you said about the film. I guarantee that not everyone will like this film. Some might call it "ambitious", while some might call it "pretentious". After watching "mother!" in theaters, I'm more on the spectrum of people praising the movie. While I do find the message to be obvious, the way Darren Aronofsky directed it was insane. I was left in shock after it ended. I'm surprised that it took Aronofsky 5 days to write the script. Like I said, a lot of people won't like this movie, and I respect your opinion. But to me, I found "mother!" to be unique.

Connor Morley Completely agree. There is something so inviting about it. While it may be obvious to some, it flies over the heads of many. People in the theater after the movie finished were saying they didn't understand it and that it was just weird. People don't think anymore. I just loved this film. It connected to me on a personal note as a Christian. I see why many would be offended but imo the movie isn't stating we are stuck in a loop, its asking the question are we stuck in a loop. Its very similar to the book of Ecclesiastes which asks many existential questions about God and man. Loved this film

DARE to enter a house that literally has a beating heart! WATCH in horror as they kill and eat a baby on screen! SEE Jennifer Lawrence walk around a house in a revealing shirt! REVOLT with anger when you realize you were lied to by advertising and you just spent 12 bucks to watch an experimental gross out film about Climate Change!

There is really nothing to spoil, because there is no traditional linear narrative in it. It was like watching someone's nightmare or delirium hallucination - you just can't understand it logically, but you can feel what it is about intuitevely. Chris's interpretation is interesting for me, because I have no such angle after watching at all. I felt that this movie is a very accurate metaphoric representation of romantic relationship with narcissist (red flags, constant feeling of something wrong going on with visibility of happiness, so called "gaslighting", etc.). My main feeling was that this movie is very personal for the director, like he was traumatised by someone or he was the one who caused the trauma, but he just couldn't explain what was happening (it's the main feeling of Laurence characters - she is in a constant confusion about events).

From the script notes I've read your interpretations are correct. Also the first house and mother can be looked at as the old testimate time line. The current house and mother take place in the presence of the new testimate God. Loved the film thought Jennifer Lawrence's performance added a very needed gravity that brings out the viewers emotions

I feel like more that purpose was to make the movie as if you're looking into one's perspective of life. Like Chris and Jeremy Jahns, Veronica represents Mother Earth, and Him (Javier Bardem, yes that is his credited name) is God. In Him's eyes, which we are not invited into seeing his perspective, he is a creator and people love and adore him and all of these people (The Human Population) who are doing all of these wrongs in front of him, are steadily forgiven by him, which is usually God's mindset.
On the other hand, we have Mother Earth... Veronica (played by Jennifer Lawrence). Veronica, like Mother Earth, has worked her ass off to set everything right to fit her and her family. Yet, The rude guest in her house, symbolic of us, the human population, are messing up everything they set right for us, and our sins are represented by Mother Earth's begging for us to stop, and as we say "Yes", we still do the same thing, disobeying. And the more we ask, and mess up her stuff, we still ignore and do what we can to please God. We cant see the good out of any of this because we are in Her perspective, not Him's (God). We are in her eyes, and In her eyes throughout the movie, Mother Earth, unlike God, Sees us as hard headed shithead... Because we are😂
In Conclusion, God is an asshole. I see why Atheists are Atheists.

There's a very good reason for the close ups of Jennifer and the circular camera work. She represents Earth at the beginning , beautiful innocent and unspoilt. There was nothing in the beginning other than Mother nature/earth so the focus was intentional.
    And it's his girlfriend.

By the end, I think it was blatantly obvious that it was pointing out the absurdities of religion... And you know people hold their religion dearly, and you know most people can't stand if their religion is even entertained in a bad light like this... Oh, well, their displeasure doesn't discount the truth of it.
However, I enjoyed it, very powerful and profound... It made me think, it made me angry, because that is basically how I see religion; the senseless chaos, riots, sacrifices, and straight up murder in the name if their god.
Easily, Javier Bardem is god in this movie, no question about it, that should have been very clear in the closing... Lawrence is mother earth... That baby was Jesus... The random people showing up is us, humanity; ugh, lack thereof... Also thought the sons, the one murdering the other, were Cain and Able... Then I figure, if that's the case, then Harris and Pfieffer were Adam and Eve... Ha, it all makes sense.
I dig it... Stupid, overly religious people will not get it.

  • @Hakman78
    @Hakman78 6 років тому +11

Just finished this, extremely good, the mystery as to what was going on kept me going. The more intense parts were like a nightmare and I felt like they would never end (probably the point). The more graphic parts near the end were a bit much and I could have done without them. The frustration of Jennifer Lawrence’s character was infuriating, because I wanted so much to help her throughout essentially the entire movie. She was in constant confusion (as was I) and I kept waiting for clarity as to what was happening. This is extremely well made, I would just warn people that once things get out of hand in the movie’s plot they only get worse. GRAPHIC IMAGERY WARNING!!!
