Absolutely I nearly puked because of everything with the people just coming in and ruining everything and then things got gross and I just wanted to grab her and leave and just stop existing
This is one of the few movies that physically made me extremely, viscerally stressed while watching, I felt like I was in the house as it devolved into chaos
I was close to an anxiety attack when the house started to over crowd.. Even better I was 5 minutes late to the movie so even though some of the bible similarities started to creep in I had NO idea what was going on.. I actually recommend skipping the first few minutes if you are showing it to a first timer since the beginning gives away the whole thing
Marius Møller I don’t think it gives the whole thing away when I first watched it I thought it was a dream but maybe I wasn’t paying attention in any regards this movie was damn good
I actually cried when they killed her baby, it was a mixture of sadness and stress/anxiety that build up during the film, and that scene broke me. I was so frustrated during the whole movie...... i liked it?
@sneef This movie uses Javier Bardem for the "God" role. Jennifer portrays the Mother Earth role. I think the whole point of the film was conveyed in a relatively clear manner. There wasn't all that many bad reviews. The bad reviews I have seen are folks that didn't like the idea of how gory the baby eating scene was. Don't really understand how people despise this film so much. Not everything has to be described in such a literal sense for it to be beautiful. Does poetry always come off as a clear point? Art work is almost never so black and white to the point where everyone gets the same meaning out of it. As the old saying goes "Art is in the eye of the beholder, and everyone will have their own interpretation".
the breaking point for me was when those people sitting on the sink started bouncing then broke it like idk why that just really got me going internally like almost relating in a metaphorical way to the feeling of people completely & deliberately crossing your boundaries & invading your personal space & not being listened to at all
The two people who kept sitting on sink and then broke it casusing a flood inside house is a refrence to the great flood and a reset. Thats why everybody left.
I completely agree...I thought the movie was supposed to portray how a woman feels when she is pregnant/experiencing labour. Anxiety, mood swings, you feel like you can't trust anyone and everyone is suffocating you and overstepping SO many boundaries...
amanda T I was very stressful all the time when she speaks her mind and nobody care at all, I was like standing up saying: " Punch them" " Puuunch them".
I agree, I've loved every movie he has done, Requiem For a Dream being my favorite. He's overall my favorite director but most of his movies can be hard to watch.
I agree with this. I don’t think he was avoiding any kind of chaos and wanted the child and everything else to happen, if shown otherwise, it was probably all just an act to make mother believe him. He let in the first woman who was pushing for her to have a child with him, she just wouldn’t drop it, even after her own child died, she guilt tripped her for not entirely understanding her because she didn’t have a child, even further persuading mother to have a child with him. And him kinda forced himself onto her despite her being mad in the moment when they were arguing, but she does let in eventually.
Same for me too! My chest was so tight and painful verging on a panic attack. I wanted her to run out of the house as soon as the first people showed up when she was pregnant. But honestly, I'd had been OUT at some point during that first BS crowd came.
Sadly, Mother Nature can't leave the Earth, she just has to endure what humans impose, with God not really intervening much. Cycle after cycle, no lessons learned :-(
She said “I guess I’ll get ready for the apocalypse” once he began to write again Everything before she got pregnant was the Old Testament and when she woke up pregnant that began the New Testament
I didn’t catch that the first time I watched the movie, but I did the second time after watching it a year later. That was kind of an “in your face” joke tbh.
@@rightkumaran REALLY? You don't know what the old and new testament are? The old is the Torah (basically all the old laws followed by the Jews etc) and the new testament is after Jesus is born...
First of all, the real BEGBIE would piss on Mother Nature. Second of all, we are all beating the living shit out of Mother Nature and she is barely alive. I think your drinks come a bit too late.
Other points I noticed, just thoughts: • When that couple breaks the sink, causing water to spill everywhere and Him tells all of the people from the wake to leave, this represents the Flood from Noah’s ark. Then when his “fans” return later in the movie with no explanation, these are the people who survived the “flood”, hence why characters like Man and Woman don’t come back. • The House was earth and Him’s Office was Paradise, which is why when Man and Woman Break the crystal thing Him gets them out and blocks the doors, kicking them out of “paradise”. • The Crystal, is both Mother Earth’s love and the forbidden fruit. The first sin. Hence why immediately after breaking it, Man and Woman have sex. • When the baby is killed, and eaten (communion) and Mother begins killing people, this may represent nature’s natural disasters. People attacking Mother may represent how humans ignore nature’s signs, disasters, global warming, etc. and instead keep damaging it. (After the fans attack mother and kill the baby, when him says “we have to forgive them, they may change now” is God’s hope that humanity might change after Jesus died for their sins. He has hope that they have learned as both mother and him hear their crying whispers.) Which- we don’t learn- so mother does blow up the house, this is the Apocalypse, where Him “God” has a chance to start again. Unfortunately, humans don’t seem to learn ever... so every ending might end the same, Sorry for Him 😂
@bravoman I never said I don't "believe" in God and his teachings, it's just that you don't see the problem in the world which is painfully, and accurately shown in the movie. I can also say that there are some things that are not shown correctly in the movie. But when you actually see it, it's how people act in today's world, people destroying nature and doing other bad things then later go to God and act like nothing happened, and I'm not denying that I do that sometimes. All of us sin everyday.
@bravoman Yes, there are people who do not provide any good in the world, do mean stuff, and have a bad personality, then go to church and ask forgiveness, yes, God does forgive people, but then what? Same cycle all over again? After church do bad deeds again and ask for forgiveness? And yes, I am afraid of somethings, all people do, I fear God, and mostly, the PEOPLE that we are with today.
@bravoman I know, but there is evil in this world, some we can't control, but just like the movie, we can all start again with mother nature's love and with God's guidance.
Just added information. The room which he boarded up represents the garden of eden so when man and woman broke the crystal heart, he bans them from entering it again.
they say that when she and him have ***, thats when things turn bad, but i believe when the heart broke thats when things got bad, because thats when he should have realized, thats when he should have listed to mother. Thats why God is in heaven, and not with his creation.
oooooohh, it is after ***, almost, i'm still almost right, the garden of eden is God's office, and the crystal is the forbidden fruit, so when it breaks, thats when they can finally have ***, everyones right.
The new testament was written way after Jesus death... most people don’t realize this but Jesus is written about all throughout the Old Testament but most people don’t read the Old Testament.
I have difficulty dissing him because he's supposed to be God. He is one of the most frustrating characters (in my opinion) since Guy Woodhouse from Rosemary's Baby.
In the bible yellow represents purification. I think that's why she was drinking the elixir whenever she was in pain. She was trying to purify earth when it was being damaged.
This movie sure was a special kind of horror. It left me with a bad feeling to my stomach. I can‘t even really describe it. Just seeing these people acting that rude and disrespectful, invading mothers life...it made me feel on edge and still does. Since I am neither religious nor did I ever read the bible, I didn‘t recognise all the obvious parallels to the bible. Makes sense though. Honestly I like to interpret it a bit less religious for myself, because the theme of taking until theres nothing left got me good.
Agree, although i do have much invested into biblical studies, and overall esoteric research. This film profoundly impacted me,and left me unsettled. Uncomfortable. And heart broken. Strange indeed
i felt same too, im not very religious, i now basics, but i missed a lot in this movie, but whole point was pretty clear, jesus, god, mother earth alegories. I was amazed how good directors made that scary feeling when strangers invade house doing what they want, it is similar with today world what we do to nature, this year its clear that global warming is went to new hights since europe having worst heats waves in many years....
This movie gave me a major panic attack… crazy edit: This movie brought something out in me that I didn’t know affected me. It’s sounds weird but this is probably the first movie that genuinely scares me just because stuff like this can happen. People are psycho!
NOTE: Don't Forget the Part When the Man is Led by the Woman upstairs and they Break the Crystal! That was Eve taking a bite of the Apple (or the symbolism of doing a something Forbidden). And notice after that scene, everything goes Down-Hill from that moment. Great analysis. Loved the Movie.
Don't forget that Him locked the room and say "They will never enter the room again". This is a reference of Heaven where Adam and Eve are thrown out of heaven
and the brothers who were killing each other were Cain and Abel. The house (world) was then tainted with sin and since then it all went downhill. When there was anarchy during the mourning of the death of the son, the sink got destroyed (the great flood), and it ends with the rapture, taking every life.
I wish I would have went into it blind . In some ways I love this guy because he's pointed out about a half a dozen movies that just love but I wish he would just give the movie he's reviewing a grade before he explains them . That way I would watch his review afterwards. I've did a few times but this is one that should have to .
The part that really got me was when the brother who murdered his sibling (allegory for Cain) came back and was just like "He left you here all alone... You do understand" And walked out the back door saying "good luck"
@@tercola8756 my interpretation of the scene is the brother is now alone without his parents money or brother and much like her feels insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The husband (God) leaves mother alone, scared, and confused which is why the brother says "you do understand". The brother decides he no longer needs god since he feels abandoned and leaves whilst the mother stays in the house (stays with God) which is why the brother said "good luck".
@@dynamic4820 that's what my interpretation of it was as well if that brother was Cain didn't cain eventually go to the dark side? was that basically a demon telling mother good luck because it's supposed to be a shitshow and him is really in control of it?
I had so much anxiety and helplessness watching this movie. This reminded me a lot of my relationship with a narcissist, being dependent on him and madly in love, while his selfishness and need for attention creates drama and stress.
Yes! I got so many flashbacks to mentally abusive husbands. I'm sorry you've gone through similar experiences, both you. I hope you're doing way better like me:3
I think it's important to remember the toxic relationships & to be reminded of the signs of toxicity so that we don't ever fall back into those cycles. IMO. 🤷
You have forgotten the "Flood", when Mother chases all people out of her house for the first time and than she goes to the basement and turns the water off, so she could clean the house.
Boris Teodosijevic no... The stubbornness of the people caused the floor.. And after she chases them out... She turns off the water and begins a rebuild
Not the entire house is the Garden of Eden, the office is, you can see that because when they break the gem(the forbidden fruit) they're not allowed back there again The house seems like all dimensions, actually, right before Cain and Abel arrive you can see Him going up the stairs alone(heaven), in the middle of the house you have their room and the office(garden of eden), and then Earth, where most of the people stay, then the basement is hell, especially since it appears after the blood of Abel(the first sin) shows the door there The end is Apocalypse, i think
I don't really think so Dip Shit, the apple was the gem, since they messed with it and they were banned from eden The Doorknob was from the eden, cain killed his brother with it so the murder weapon was a direct consequence of Adam and Eve breaking the gem and being banned from eden
This was the first movie that scared me not just mentally, but physically. Just seeing the people pouring in and their antics getting worse and worse gave me real raw anger, a sickening appalled feeling and anxiety. I've seen Gummo, The Poughkeepsie Tapes, The Green Inferno and those failed to spook me to the bone as much as this film did. That's how you know you found an amazing film, when you get genuine emotion out of it. Huge props to the directors!!
The only thing I haven’t heard explained is the red spot. When “Cain” kills “Abel” the spot where his head hit remains after the blood is cleaned up. What is the symbolism of this? I’ve thought maybe hell/outer darkness. But that doesn’t make sense with the Cain and Abel story.
It represents humanities downfall and if you noticed it ate at the floor and went straight down into the basement (hell) because murder. Murder is corruption which lead her to finding the door with the gas tank etc which God tried covering up.
If im not mistaken, abel and cain’s story is the first act of murder between humans. As said by the previous commenter, it may be an indication of corruption. That no matter how you “fix” it or “justify” it, it’s still murder = morally bad and it will never change/never be “cleaned”.
I think I remember something about God telling Cain since he spilt the blood of his brother Able, Cain and his descendants would always have to shed blood for the land to grow food for him, if I'm not mistaken
It was the first fratricide by human kind, which shows the first act of violence man commited against his own kind, after that a trail of violence against each other began, which left earth stained with blood permanently forever as in the violence only accelerated and never stopped, it shows the beginning of bloodshed by humans.
I think also a lot of people missed the subtle moment where all the “guests” are back at the house for the funeral and Michelle Pfeiffer’s character toasts to the husband for his hospitality and not mother. If we are going down the path of the film being an allegory for the creation story then this makes sense as it’s often said the creator was the only one who made everything.
I loved how there wasn't a soundtrack/score for this movie. I feel like it helped set the tone for the movie and did a great job of building up tension. It's hard to explain, but take the scene with the baby being killed and eaten as an example. Most movies would use some generic orchestral music playing in the background and then resort to a musical jump scare when it showed the baby's eaten body to try to "scare" the audience. Instead though, no music was played and it made that scene, as well as the rest of the movie, creepy/disturbing. I think it also helps to make the movie more open to interpretation when you don't have music trying to tell the viewer when a scene is scary, sad, happy etc.
Many had anxiety issues watching the film and I think you’ve pointed to one of the main causes. It was a great choice to have no musical score for this wacky flick.
Alot of people talk about how "sick" and " twisted" the movie is especially with the baby being killed and eaten, but what they fail to realize is that literally EVERYTHING in the movie is an Allegory. The baby being killed was Jesus's crucifixion and him being eaten was "The Last Supper". Although it can be gruesome, this movie is unquestionably Brilliant!!!
Specialy how humans "treat" the house and the owners. The man (God) idolized, while the mother ( life) and the house( earth) torn apart, thinking it truly belongs to them due to just "repeating" what the Man said.
Just because it has dumb metaphors doesn't mean it's brilliant, it was boring and was hyped wayyy more than it should have been. Everything about it was painfully obvious and spelled out for the audience. Have you ever seen any Of The interviews about this film? Every single cast and crew member were so pretentious and unlikable, constantly saying things like "oh UwU it's one of those movies you have to watch multiple times to realky g e t, wow how subtle much masterpiece."
It’s a deliberately twisted allegory (allegories) specifically, like how some religions view another religion (a.k.a. As the enemy or horribly misguided): it’s a criticism meant to invoke horror/anger/spurn a sense of righteousness in the viewer.
This movie is ONE GIANT BIBLICAL REFERENCE. I heard that before watching and everything automatically clicked for me while watching the movie. While I was engaged the entire time, the whole thing seemed a tad bit too pretentious for it's own good. I actually liked it the more I talked about it. I had to wait a whole day just to put a review up. Just a crazy experience.
I’d say that a movie that leads to a thread like this (one person says it’s perfect, one says it’s meh, one says it’s horrible) is probably doing something right. I think it’s amazing. Disgusting, but amazing.
He is my favorite director, Requiem For a Dream and mother! are both 10/10. He makes movies that are VERY heavy and not for everyone but they're so brilliant!
Pi is a masterpiece, as well. Crazy that Aronofsky's first feature (unless there's one he did prior to pi that I'm forgetting) is of comparable quality to all his later works. Man came into the game already working on a different level.
I walked into this blind, so the whole time, I thought Him was a literal author, and it was showing how shitty he treated his inspiration, his muse, his creative self. And it was in treating her like crap that he was blocked. Only when he showed her love and attention to did new life, new writing, come into being. Then, towards the end, when everyone was clamoring for him, I was taking that to be his ideas begging for his attention, just as she was. It was when the editor was shooting people that I thought for sure that was the intention - killing ideas that won't sell. Or suddenly there being a prison in the house - all those ideas needing to be locked away, to focus on others. Lol, totally missed the Garden of Eden, God, Mother Nature, Great Flood symbolism. My theory went completely off the rails at the end anyway, with, ugh, the baby literally being broken and eaten. I honestly thought that once he was born, this new creation, that all the people would just disappear. Lol, I need to go back and watch it again.
I just heard of this movie through this video so I can't be right bout this at all, but that baby part and your theory could still match up and it being about how the author so enamored by fame from his work, that he showed off his newly born son to all the fans, and naturally with celeb kids their lives are going to be seen and picked apart by the public, rather it's over enthused fans or someone else.
No no I think you’re onto something here kayla sisk mentioned it too, the baby could be a symbol of the author’s best idea that actually grew into fruition; the initial interest in the baby and how “they just want to see him”, then they all just want to touch and hold him, and then devour the baby and “pick it apart” as Kayla said. Fans (and not fans) of an author will pick apart a work until it doesn’t even resemble the original piece, take English teachers for example lol. Anyways, I actually really like your interpretation of this movie, and it definitely holds up pretty well!!
One of the saddest small things in the movie is when she's trying to find a safe place to give birth one of the soldiers actually pays attention to her (which if you notice nobody around her does) and he shields her with his body and wants to help her and then his head gets brutally blown away. I think he represents all the environmentalist people who want to patch up the ecosystems, save species, fight for cleaner future and all that but are helpless against the horde of ignorance. Then she wants to leave trough the door which might mean space exploration but he insists on keeping her in the house.
Or alternatively, he represents the person who gave Mary and Joseph the barn to give birth to Christ inside. All of his followers and supporters were later ridicule.
I understand all the biblical references...but all those strangers barging in and making themselves at home pissed me off so much! Like who the hell did they think they were?? It all played out like a bad dream, all the events happening in the blink of an eye and the feeling of confusion and helplessness...
This is an absolute masterpiece. You can see the fatigue in her eyes at the very end. Mother earth has given her everything and humanity destroyed it; her last resort was to completely annihilate what has caused her pain in the most destructive way possible - eliminating herself.
It’s messed up, but me and my friend started cheering when she was killing those people because by then we were both extremely annoyed at all of them and were actually hoping they would all die.
Another Biblical tidbit: Adam and his family invade the house. At first they praise Him but eventually they start acting depraved until the sink breaks and water goes everywhere flooding the kitchen and getting rid of all the people. Ergo the flood.
Watched this movie in theaters, watched half the audience walk out and I look over to my buddy and I whispered, "I don't think they got the metaphor.". I'm glad we all stuck it out because the discussion between all of us afterwards was a good one.
Cuz god loves his creation most even know each time we will break his heart kill his son and turn on each other to the point of death he loves us so much he’ll ask mother for her heart so he can recreate use?
@@kkandsims4612 oof you saw the wrong side of the argument. it’s about how god selfishly created man so they could worship only him and how that is killing mother nature over and over in a horrible cycle. it also represents how being too religious or worshiping a person or thing too much can be very damaging.
No, you do not know what it is about .... Nothing to do with Jesus ... everything to do with the devil ... Brilliant Symbolism? .... BULL SHYT! Monstrous cruelty without a clear message means the movie ENDORSES monstrous cruelty. Thinks it is all big joke ... A BIG EFF U to the director, the film writer and to the stupid azz fans who think this is a "great scene."
the thing in the toilet represented adams rib (aka man) and when u see him coughing in the toilet and he has a wound bleeding by his rib cage it’s representing adam taking a rib out to make women. that is why we later on see, eve, his wife known as “woman”.
Maybe someone in the comment section has said it but the diamond shard thing is the Apple in the Garden of Eden as remember the older couple went and touched it when asked not to and the wife kept insisting to go up there and Mother said not to when he isnt there and they still went up there and broke it and God(Him) kicked the couple out of the room and boarded it up as done in the Bible as well.
I also took the parts with all the visitors as how people think that all of God's creation is there for them to use as they please. Everyone in the house just uses the bathroom and kitchen and everything without asking mother. Humanity's obsession with leaving a mark/legacy on the earth is shown when people are vandalizing the house to "show they were here" or w/e the person said. Throughout the movie, the visitors refer to the house as His, and don't acknowledge that it is also mother's, rather they just call her the inspiration. I thought that was really interesting because of how (christian) people often refer to the earth as "God's earth". A lot of (christian) people use religion as an excuse for not making better choices for the earth, and they believe that God will give us what we need because of His plan for us. I definitely think this movie attempts to call that bs out.
As a Christian, I also am annoyed and confused when other "christians" use the bible as an excuse to exploit and abuse the earth, because if they even read the Bible, they'd find plenty of verses that prove God loves the earth and expects us to take care of it. Also take into account what the actual hebrew words meant. 1 Example: when God placed man in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it (Genesis 2:15) the hebrew for "keep/tend" is shamar, which also translates to "to guard" or "to watch and protect".
very well said! the real words of Christianity are against exploiting the earth, unfortunately it's misinterpreted by people sometimes. :( i apologize if i generalized in my comment, i don't want it to seem like i have anything against Christianity.
The first time I saw this movie I had no clue what happened. Afterwards I saw this video among many others and realized how deep this movie actually is. This movie didn’t do too well with the critics but it is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen

Mexico and Guatemala rewrote their consitutions to place more severe restrictions on the right to buy guns.
It would be interesting to see what would happen if a reincarnation of Mother wanted to LEAVE the house itself, making Him pursue or convince her to stay in fear that she may break their very existence. Just a thought.
As mentioned at 3:13 it is not Earth that the story takes place in, but rather in a different "plain of existence", so who's to know what lies beyond it?
Olivia Martin Yeah I know the film takes place on "another plane of existence", but it's clearly a metaphor for Earth, God, religion, humanity, etc. The entire film is a metaphor, not a plot.

This movie really conveys the dark nature of humanity. I had to see it twice to appreciate the details without feeling so frustrated. What I like about this movie, is that helps to really surrender, that we are a conflict of good and evil by nature and we shouldn’t be so shocked by what happens in this world. Let’s be happy anyways!
I was waiting for this. I was left confused when I exited the movie theater. I got annoyed figuring it out because it felt like I would never figure out the meaning. Then I thought you would cover it. Thank you for clearing it up. Edit: I was annoyed at the fact I was confused at the movie, not angry. I love how people are saying I can't feel anger towards a movie yet people felt angry towards Robocop being remade? Or mad towards Batman V Superman? Or mad at Alien Covenant?
I interpreted this movie in a completely different and easier way. While I watched this movie, mother reminded me a lot of myself and a relationship I had. I would do anything to make him happy, I loved him immensely. I would give everything to him and it was never enough. I often felt like my heart was being stripped way from my body just like that scene in the movie. So to me, this movie represents excessive love and how sometimes you give everything to someone and it's still not enough.
I was thinking that Father is supposed to be a imperfect god, more worried about praise and being heard than what's actually going on with what he created. I'm just going by what I've heard so far, plus I don't know how aronofsky feels about religion.
Roy Latham No. You're wrong. The story is told in the perspective of mother. Mother is not Mother Earth. Mother is Satan. When Adam first walked upon the Earth, Lucifer saw mankind as weak and sickly Mortals. Because unlike him and the rest of the Angels, humans had a shelf life. So to speak. Which is why you see Adam old and dying. Eve is shown to be a b****, because it was Eve who sold out Lucifer to God. The occult like fanaticism of the fans, does not represent how religious people truly are but how the devil sees all humans. Again this movie is told him to respect of mother and thus the perspective of Satan. Since the director of this movie has already been linked to the occult it is safe to assume that this movie was created to trick the viewers to have Sympathy for the Devil by posing him as Mother Nature.
When the people started just coming up in her house I was screaming in my head "WHY WON'T THEY JUST LEAVE?!" This movie certainly made me feel stuff, mainly anger and frustration.

Even better I was 5 minutes late to the movie so even though some of the bible similarities started to creep in I had NO idea what was going on.. I actually recommend skipping the first few minutes if you are showing it to a first timer since the beginning gives away the whole thing

Agreed! The acting was so good. She did great.
Agreed! The anxiety of having too much people at the house! Hahaha.
@sneef it's okay not everyone can understand the underlying themes and metaphors.

Boom! Reality check! you got me there.

@@orange_leaf4913 I like the random parks and rec reference
Other points I noticed, just thoughts:
• When that couple breaks the sink, causing water to spill everywhere and Him tells all of the people from the wake to leave, this represents the Flood from Noah’s ark.
Unfortunately, humans don’t seem to learn ever... so every ending might end the same, Sorry for Him 😂
The best explanation of it. god we suck
@bravoman The movie is a representation of what is happening in the world. Sorry if you can't see it, but it's really a big problem in the world.

The house seems like all dimensions, actually, right before Cain and Abel arrive you can see Him going up the stairs alone(heaven), in the middle of the house you have their room and the office(garden of eden), and then Earth, where most of the people stay, then the basement is hell, especially since it appears after the blood of Abel(the first sin) shows the door there

Isn't just an allegory for the Mark of Cain?

This.

Many had anxiety issues watching the film and I think you’ve pointed to one of the main causes. It was a great choice to have no musical score for this wacky flick.
Dear stranger whoever reads this: may your mother live over 100 years..

Just because it has allegories doesn’t mean it’s brilliant
And one can do the same with forms of government/politics (such as how communists view capitalism), etc.
Your supposed to walk into it blind. That's the way it was written....
I think it’s both your interpretation and the religious one
No no I think you’re onto something here kayla sisk mentioned it too, the baby could be a symbol of the author’s best idea that actually grew into fruition; the initial interest in the baby and how “they just want to see him”, then they all just want to touch and hold him, and then devour the baby and “pick it apart” as Kayla said. Fans (and not fans) of an author will pick apart a work until it doesn’t even resemble the original piece, take English teachers for example lol. Anyways, I actually really like your interpretation of this movie, and it definitely holds up pretty well!!
Man this theory could be it too. interpretational films are the best

Yeah.. the sad thing is in a metiphorical sense the people that barged into mothers house is us humans *guilt trip ensues*
Feels like depression and the madness of the outside world. Yet us humans still fail to understand

This is an absolute masterpiece. You can see the fatigue in her eyes at the very end. Mother earth has given her everything and humanity destroyed it; her last resort was to completely annihilate what has caused her pain in the most destructive way possible - eliminating herself.
this movie is like a bad dream...literally like you fell asleep and the movie is what you are dreaming..

like from scene to scene thats how my dreams always are, like in a house evolving to a school then to some other familiar building. Funny huh?
Especially the ending!
that's exactly what happened. damn, it was a horrible dream.
It’s also like a bad trip in that even the most benign event seems malignant.
I'm maybe crazy but I wanted each of these people to being slowly dismantled in an intense pain...

The amount of emotions this movie put me through is astounding. This is some of the best screenplay I've ever experienced

Any input on that scene where she flushes what seems to be a heart down the toilet?
@Elinora Rose gotcha cheers :) .. Will have to rewatch!
the thing in the toilet represented adams rib (aka man) and when u see him coughing in the toilet and he has a wound bleeding by his rib cage it’s representing adam taking a rib out to make women. that is why we later on see, eve, his wife known as “woman”.
My nigga! You got them biblical references only point.
I definitely think this movie attempts to call that bs out.
when I was watching this movie, an environmental message was the last thing I thought I would get lol
:( i apologize if i generalized in my comment, i don't want it to seem like i have anything against Christianity.
hahaaa that's funny, it was the first thing i thought!! the movie is definitely up to interpretation though, there's a lot of symbolism
That's ok! I wasn't offended! :) I realize I might have come off as a bit preachy, so I also apologize

Olivia Martin How could Mother Earth leave the Earth?
As mentioned at 3:13 it is not Earth that the story takes place in, but rather in a different "plain of existence", so who's to know what lies beyond it?
Olivia Martin I think you misunderstood that part.
Olivia Martin Yeah I know the film takes place on "another plane of existence", but it's clearly a metaphor for Earth, God, religion, humanity, etc. The entire film is a metaphor, not a plot.
I'm aware of all of that too, but some people (including myself) like to think outside of the box and have fun theorizing a bit. It's just a concept.
i honestly belive shes drinking the same gold paint pigmentation she used on the wall of her house in the beginning. the bottles look extremely similar and since the home is essentially her shes drinking the material she treats the walls with reconnecting to herself.

Nocturne I would also recommend watching Jeremy Jahn's spoiler review. He does a really good job at explaining the biblical parallels too
Nocturne Awwww where you angweee??? Awwww dats sooo saaaad awwwwww
Im often surprised how angry people get at art.
Angry? Why would a MOVIE make you angry?
ღ ღ Why would a movie make you sad?
I interpreted this movie in a completely different and easier way. While I watched this movie, mother reminded me a lot of myself and a relationship I had. I would do anything to make him happy, I loved him immensely. I would give everything to him and it was never enough. I often felt like my heart was being stripped way from my body just like that scene in the movie. So to me, this movie represents excessive love and how sometimes you give everything to someone and it's still not enough.
So the first "book" is the old testament and the second book the new testament

No.
What do u mean with "they" the people? or the husband and the wife?
The fact that she was so adamant about never doing a movie like this ever again says everything.
