In the original cut (which was only released in Japan), Eric was shot by the police instead of being injured by the explosion, and the dad alien literally rips the bullet out of him. In the international release, they rerecorded the audio of Michael saying "He's gone?" but he's clearly saying the original line of "He's dead?" (and they did such a poor job of it, you can still hear the original line under the rerecorded version), and "He's dead, mom, he's dead" became "They can't help him". I wish I were joking.

@Throwaway_73 well in fairness… every actor has a friend… actors are people too so they also know other people and those people can talk about how they know actors.
I've heard that most of the crew for this movie was pretty much payed in advance or something. The director was hired out of the blue, showed up and saw that everyone who could be a part of a film crew was already there but he asked for the script and was told "We don't have a script. Just start filming and write one on the weekends" so they started filming and wrote one on the weekends. Also apparently the kid who starred in this film was someone who had a condition where he actually needed that wheelchair and he probably could've been a big 90s star if the movie wasn't so bad. His career never really picked up after it and now he's an artist or something. Which, props to him for being one of the few people in this film that could bounce back into the public eye after that. I don't think there's a single speaking actor in this film that continued acting after it. At least not within decade to follow.
That is all super interesting info! It's pretty clear that the script/plot was not a top priority. Anything not directly ET- inspired most certainly evolved in a spitballing session wherein the director, the boom guy and some extras got really stoned and started brainstorming and laughing until they couldn't breath. (Alien design/random dance sequence/ wheelchair kid falling off cliff/entire climax and resolution of film -- all inspired by the director's vivid, intense acid trips on the weekend while fleshing out the "script.")
so you're telling me that we had a movie in the 80s that had a canon disabled main character in an actually decent wheelchair played by an actual disabled actor and it was made to market off mcdonalds? Man I can't even get that kinda representation today
So, I just have one little problem with them having an actual disabled kid playing the disabled kid in the movie. Mac resurrects the kid from the dead. However, because of the reality that the actor was actually wheelchair bound, he cannot give him the use of his legs. So, he revives him from death, but doesn't help him walk? What the actual hell? When I was a small child in the early 90's my aunt owned a video store in Luxembourg. I spent A LOT of time in that store and watched SO MANY movies. The thing is, I was very young at the time and now I don't recall most of them. Except for one single movie that randomly pops into my mind from time to time. I have thought about that movie hundreds of times, unable to remember what it was called or what it was about. All I remembered was the final scene involving an alien chewing pink gum in a car. I wasn't even sure if it had actually happened or if it was just a fever dream of mine. I didn't think I would be able to find proof of its existence so I never actually bothered to look it up. But then this video was recommended to me. This IS the movie! Thanks UA-cam algorithm. I feel weirdly emotional now.

I think its hilarious that Buzz Knudson is not only a real person but he is an award winning sound engineer who also worked on ET: The Extraterrestrial
That just confirms to me that no expense was spared in this production (despite how it turned out…) because they most likely went to him and other members of the ET crew and went “name your price.”

Im so happy i found this video. My dad recently found his old middle school yearbook, and each kid had their own personal page with their favorite movie, food, etc. We saw that his page said his favorite movie was Mac and Me and decided to check it out. My dad couldn't remember what it was about (I think his brain erased it from his memory because of how disturbing it was). We made it about 30 minutes in and then had to stop it because we were so confused and disturbed.
16:53 "Why they're holding their hands up in a court house" I genuinely thought when watching this movie for the first time that they were in a church and was like, 'yeah, sure, why not'
I love how they see a disastrously remodeled/trashed room and their first thought is "the kid in a wheelchair did it!" Like..a top student athlete would have serious difficulty accomplishing all that in a single night. Imagine carrying all that crap in with one arm, rolling a wheelchair + the weight of the stuff you're carrying with the other. Silently. In one night. And also destroying a wall.
idk my bf’s little brother is in a wheelchair. hes ten and if you gave him a monster he could probably do that in a night (not silently though hes a ten tear old)
remembering discussing diversity in media in one of my classes as a thought exercise (how many disabled characters can you actually think of, basically) and y’know your girl went “has anyone heard of Mac and Me?”
"Robert "Buzz" Knudson, one of Hollywood's most respected sound re-recording mixers and a three-time Academy Award-winner for his work on "Cabaret," "The Exorcist" and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." In addition to his three Oscar wins, Knudson received seven other Oscar nominations." Just thought I'd leave this here
I was born with the same condition as the actor and he's just a few years older than me. When I saw this as a kid it was pretty cool seeing someone in a wheelchair treated as mostly average.
We only owned like 10 movies when I was a kid that we watched over and over and this was one of them. I'm honestly shocked that more people don't appreciate the charm that the spooky little aliens have, especially when I think that ET is at least twice as ugly and far more beloved
Omg THANK YOU. I know you left this comment 5 months ago but I've been scrolling through the comments because I COULD NOT remember where I had seen that clip before. 😂😂😂
Alex Needs Spoons No shit, Sherlock. They’re saying that it would be virtually impossible for the disabled kid to drag all that crap into the house all by himself in such a short period of time.
Alana Jones I’m more wondering how the mom thought that her wheelchair bound child was able to put all of that stuff on the ceilings and in the wall, above his wheelchair. How could he get up that high in a wheel chair?
Buzz Knudson is a real guy, he was my great Uncle. 😂 His nickname was Buzz and that's just what he went by. He did sound mixing for quite a few movies like: E.T., Back to the Future, The Exorcist, and Cabaret. He won three academy awards for it too. I've seen them in person as a kid in his office. My Aunt and my Uncle still have one his Oscars in their house. lol
Just a friendly reminder that the actress who plays Eric’s mother, Christine Ebersole, is an acclaimed Broadway actress and the voice of Steven Universe’s *WHITE DIAMOND, A DICTATOR OF AN INTERGALACTIC PLANET,* began _with this role_
Because for the 80s this movie wasn't that abnormal. It's only as wild and bizarre as it is when looked at in a modern light. Now i'm not saying it was ever good, but it wasn't that odd either. The amount of cocaine in hollywood at the time they churned shit like this out every other day.
Thanks for speaking about this Cody!!! Because the whole beef with you and Jake, I didn’t know if you were gonna be able to crush the UA-cam game still
18:00 Funnily enough, Knudson is a real surname, most notably of Robert Knudson, who was a sound engineer in Cabaret, The Exorcist, E.T., Close Encounters with the Third Kind, 1941, Empire of the Sun, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. So another Knudson exists, and he was part of the team working on E.T., which this movie was heavily inspired by.
It's actually the same guy. (See many comments above -- one commenter is related to him.) His nickname was "Buzz" and he is credited both ways, depending on the movie. Possibly might have used Buzz on this one as a way to convey "yeah this movie is not my best work, don't credit me with my real name, guys."
Today is truly a good day. I saw these all appeared while I was looking for something to watch on break at work and saved them all to have a real banger night tonight 😎
In high school, my friend Greg absolutely demanded I watch this. He said it was a childhood classic for him. The wheelchair scene will forever stick with me, haha. Laughed so hard and still do whenever I see it.
You probably remember that scene so much because paul rudd always prank conan with that scene Everytime conan try to show paul rudd's movie scene, it always show that scene from mac and me instead of the actual scene Gotta love paul rudd man
I feel like the filmmakers got this proposition from coke and mcdonald's and thought "Fuck it, as long as we put the ads they won't give a shit". Then they just went hog wild knowing since it was basically an ad movie.
It's always magical watching Conan die inside every time Paul comes on the show and says "I have a clip." He's been doing it for fifteen years, and he's never going to stop. It's one of the best running gags on late night TV.
Only three years late to this video, but this video just shot the memory of this movie back into my brain. Totally forgot this existed. I also somehow never noticed all the blatant McDonald's and Coke advertisement 😂 (I watched it when I was 6 or younger no doubt). I also somehow completely wiped the entire McDonald's dance scene from my memory haha. Definitely one strange movie, but I was also enjoyable to watch when I was little 🙂. Also, they failed on their advertisement for me. I don't drink coke or eat McDonalds 😂
It cracks me up every time that the family thinks that their son that’s in a wheelchair moved all that into the house by himself in one night with zero noise 💀
Ikr? I'm not trying to be ableist, I know that handicapped people can do a lot of things, but tearing down trees and carrying them into the house all by himself? That's just bullshit.
Paul Rudd always played the Cliff clip when he went on Conan. It was a running gag that he’d always play this clip instead of one from whatever film he was promoting.
My favorite thing about this video is realizing why Drew had seen that scene from Mac and Me over and over again was because he saw Paul Rudd show Conan O’Brien a dozen times over the years.
The fake names in the credits is actually not an uncommon occurrence. "Alan Smithee" is actually the official pseudonym used by the Directors Guild of America from 1968 to 2000, which directors would credit themselves as if they had worked on a movie that was meddled with so much by the executives during production that the director no longer wanted to be associated with it.
The main thing I know this from is that every time Paul Rudd goes onto Conan's show to promote a movie, instead of promoting the movie he's in, he just shows the scene of the kid falling off the cliff in the wheelchair, and that's it. No context or explanation, just that scene. It's honestly iconic.

Uhhh, no?? He brought the clip from the show he starred in. What are you talking about? Sometimes he’s even show his own clip twice
Update: He managed to carry on the tradition in audio by fooling Conan into listening to the scene on Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. 😂
I know that scene with the wheelchair from Paul Rudd. Every time he promotes a movie on Conan he shows it. It's hilarious look it up.

I love how they see a disastrously remodeled/trashed room and their first thought is "the kid in a wheelchair did it!"
Like..a top student athlete would have serious difficulty accomplishing all that in a single night. Imagine carrying all that crap in with one arm, rolling a wheelchair + the weight of the stuff you're carrying with the other. Silently. In one night. And also destroying a wall.
None of the children could do that. Never mind the disabled one.

This movie has a kid in a wheelchair as a protagonist, without making it a big deal. I gotta respect that.
That’s because the producer had worked with Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities and likely felt a sense of pity towards disabled children.
I was born with the same condition as the actor and he's just a few years older than me. When I saw this as a kid it was pretty cool seeing someone in a wheelchair treated as mostly average.
I am not in a disabled and haven't seen this movie since I was a kid, but I remember I liked this movie.

Funnily enough, Knudson is a real surname, most notably of Robert Knudson, who was a sound engineer in Cabaret, The Exorcist, E.T., Close Encounters with the Third Kind, 1941, Empire of the Sun, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
The guy also won three whole Oscars for Best Sound
