    I first watched this film when I was about 8 years old. I snuck it into the VCR when my old dear wasn't home. I got all the way through to the bar scene. Till the moment he's looked at the screen and said "hi Lloyd" since that's my name I genuinely thought he was talking to me while he was loosing his mind. Genuinely the scariest moment of my life!

      it’s beautiful but the score makes it so eerie. it’s a perfect mix. right off the bat kubrick makes you feel so uncomfortable and sets the mood for the entire movie in the best way possible

      Watch videogamedunkey's analysis on the film. He made an excellent opinion on the opening scene; how the far tracking shot of the yellow car and the eerie rendition of "Dies Irae" gave an impression that an unseen sinister force is lurking somewhere above us, watching carefully as us, the tiny, insignificant humans just slowly drove towards its malicious scheme. And how the car passes through the trees further implies that even they are plotting against us. Brilliant analysis on Dunkey's part, and, (as always) marvelous work by Kubrick.

    • @johnd.obrien6838

      Fun fact: Kubrick's unused shots from the opening scene were later tacked on to *Blade Runner* as part of a "happy ever after" conclusion after the original ambiguous ending didn't go over well.

      Funny story: I didn't find it scary when I first watched it. But because I'm a movie geeg, I quote them all the time in real life. So when I have to work on my computer in school, I just type that sentence over and over like him whenever I feel annoyed (which happens surprisingly often) When my teacher looked at my documents and saw what I was typing, he was almost as scared as Wendy. Now I do find it scary

    It blows my mind that some people think this is a "bad" film just because it's different from the book.
    Sure it's not a 100% faithful adaptation but i don't think Stanley Kubrick wanted to be that way. The film is great on it's own, both the book and the film are great for different reasons.

      @@suckstosuck999 Well yes, that is amongst the subtext of the film. Rather than in the novel where Jack is a tortured man who's wrestling with some intense demons, in the movie he's a deranged animal who's stripped down for what he is. I once heard someone describe the Overlook as a drug wearing down your defenses until there's nothing else except for your most base self. Certainly, Jack was influenced by the hotel but at the end of the day, he chose to do it and had no remorse for doing so.

    • @Dominic-Decoco
      @Dominic-Decoco 4 роки тому +18

      Well yeah, obviously. Can you even call that a theory? It’s extremely obvious that that’s the basic function of the scene, that’s not a theory. The reason people still talk about it is because they delve a little deeper into it, asking questions like “Has he always been there, prior to the events of the film” or “Was he already a ghost” or “Is he some figure reincarnated bound to repeat the Overlook’s cycle of violence”

    Hey, to add my two cents regarding the music, we talked about this in my college music appreciation class. What I learned really deepened my understanding of the movie and Kubrick's genius.
    The creepy music in the beginning (of which we are all familiar), is called The March to the Gallows.
    It is a part of a symphony called Symphony Fantastique, written by Berlioz (I think.... it has been a long time!). The music tells the story of a man whose lover has betrayed him and during a "witches' sabbath", he kills her. He is then marched to the gallows and he is hung; only, he wakes up and realizes it was just a dream.
    Kubrick's use of this piece is awesome without knowing this, but once you understand this added element, it really hits home that Jack had lost his trust in Wendy, thinking she is sabotaging him.
    As for the random noises, they are actually part of a piece of music called 10 De Natura, about a spider catching a fly. The sheet music is insane! It's huge! And the instruments are played differently to get the sound effects, like some of the mouthpieces taken out an reinserted backwards. It's crazy, but it's true. I wish I could remember the name.
    Anyway, that's what you're hearing when Jack is talking to Danny about how he'd never hurt the family; a compisition about a spider waiting patiently for a fly.
    I don't know about you, but that adds a new layer of creepy to me!
    Sorry to be a bit fuzzy on the details. It's been a long time since college!

    For the people that are saying that this movie is overrated, it's because you had expectations that didn't match the movie. If you went in expecting a lot of jumpscares and ghost shit, you will be disappointed. This is more of a psychological horror that makes you think and contemplate what you're seeing. It's about the underlying themes that simply aren't present in most modern horror films today. Although there are creepy visuals, they aren't the main contributor to the movie's scariness. The fear aspect comes from the character development, and the "what ifs" in the plot. The mysterious nature of the hotel and the ambiguity of the ending all contribute to what is truly a masterwork of cinema.

    • @richardsantanna5398
      @richardsantanna5398 7 років тому +35

      Whenever someone defends a horror movie they need to insist that the lack of jump scares is what caused you to dislike the movie. There's plenty of movies that don't rely on jump scares that are great, but this isn't one of them.
      Audition is a good example. It had horror elements and used them to convey the meaning of the story. The shining doesn't have a good story and isn't scary whatsoever.

    I think that what makes this movie so terrifying is the fact that you dont actually know if Jack went mad over isolation or paranormal thing, maybe its both.

      Given the supernatural occurrences in scenes that Jack wasn't involved in, I'm going to say it was the paranormal. I've never heard of a recovering alcoholic's battered wife and 5-year-old child having the same hallucinations as the dad simply because they had cabin fever. Stanley Kubrick himself used the term "supernatural" when talking about the film.

    My favorite line is "I'm not gonna hurt you Wendy" line hahaha you nailed it Chris. His little grabby hand gestures.
    What's worse is that his character genuinely reminds me of my abusive alcoholic dad, the way he used to get at night when my mom was working, wandering around the property yelling at the sky and drunkenly firing shotguns into the woods at the edge of our property. But it doesn't make me triggered. Like HEREDITARY, it gives me a feeling of catharsis. When he freezes to death at the end, it's like watching my dad metaphorically freeze to death. Hahaha kinda fucked up, but it illustrates the power of Kubricks filmmaking

    I always watch The Shining really late in winter when everyone starts to get cabin fever, as the first time I watched this movie was around that time of year.
    I live in the Midwest, so when we get to around the month of February, I pick a night that I have off where it’s really cold, snowy and windy outside. The first time I watched this film was just like this. Hearing the wind gust up against the house making all the creaking noise makes for an extra special viewing experience when watching this movie.
    This film is also what motivated me to go to college for filmmaking / video production.

      Mr. Keyser Söze its arguably my favorite film of all time, I've watched it more than any other film, but I completely understand where he's coming from. It's one of the most cynical, messes up films of all time that provocatively states that everyone is inherently awful and no one will ever be able to escape being a victim to the harshness of the real world. Your good intentions will be punished by brutal beatings, rape, death, and a loss of your humanity/free will to function as an organic person. Pretty damn disturbing to me. I really wasn't all that phased by the film the first time I saw it, and wasn't overly shocked the first time I read the book, both of which I immediately loved. But watching the film over and over and over again, no matter how entrancing, beautiful, and absolutely perfect it is… some parts can get to me. Parts that I know verbatim, I've basically memorized by heart shot for shot, can actually send chills down my spine MORE than the first time I watched them. I definitely can't speak for everyone, and it's clear that the film doesn't get to me in the same way it does Chris, but I'd be lying real horrorshow if I said I didn't understand where he's coming from.

      Because the studio wants to sell more DVD's and Blu-ray copies of the movie. Horror movie sales skyrocket during fall, especially in October and close to Halloween. If people are streaming the movie on netflix and other sites, then they aren't buying physical copies of it in stores. It's all about money and trying to capitalize as much as they can.

    I'm not going to lie, this movie genuinely makes me upset. Its a great movie, and theres nothing technically wrong with it, but I watched it just after I had finished the book, which was my favourite book of all time and while the movie was good and all it lacked everything that made me love the book so much.
    I think the characters just lack dimension, its hard to develop a character as well as a book with 500 pages can sure, but i just feel they could of done so much better. Take Jack for example, in the book, hes is very flawed sure but you rooted for him, you LIKED him. Really he felt like a victim of the Hotel, manipulated and controlled, just as much as a victim of it as Wendy and Danny, almost more so really.
    In the movie he is never displayed as anything but an abusive alcoholic asshole which makes his fall from grace, less dramatic and less upsetting.

    My boss and his girlfriend just moved into a building in Denver. I made the comment that the complex reminded me of the Shining. Girlfriend asks, "what's the Shining?". One of the greatest movies ever, you have to watch it. She now is angry with me as they watched the Shining and she is terrified of her apartment complex.
    My work is done here.

    It's kinda crazy that I'm 24 and have only just gotten into Kubrick films. I'd always heard about the shining but never really cared for horror. After watching it I can say that it's truly so much more than an horror film and has easily become my favorite of all time. I still feel that even today it's an underrated masterpiece.

      If you wanna see more great horror films, I recommend you: Evil Dead 2, Halloween (1978), Alien, Jaws, The Exorcist, The Thing and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). I think you'll become a horror fan if you watch these lol.

    When I first started dating her, I took my gf to see a Paranormal Activity movie, and she was SO SCARED. OK. Then we watched a DVD of The Grudge. She said that almost scared her as much as PA. Turns out she gets reeeeally scared at ghost movie style horror flicks. So, when I told her how great The Shining was and she simply HAD to see it if there was one horror movies to see, save for perhaps The Exorcist, she reluctantly agreed. Well, halfway through the opening credits, she got so freaked out that she refused to see the rest. A tragedy, but that's how well constructed this movie is, that even the opening sequence is really that disturbing.

    YES! I wish you would do more Kubrick movies, specially The Clockwork Orange since it's one of my favourites and a very controversial one. The Shining is hands down the best horror movie ever made, to me it even surpassed the original book.

      No I agree with you, but I'm just saying Chris finds it disturbing. For me, it never reached the point where it scarred me as it seems to have done for Chris. I would actually say Full Metal Jacket is more unsettling than A Clockwork Orange.

    • @moviefan7755
      @moviefan7755 6 років тому +3

      Max Isola It's really weird how films differentely affect people. For me Shining was much more unsettling than Clockwork Orange. But Chris watches Shining every year and can't watch Clockwork Orange.

    • @alosim1541
      @alosim1541 6 років тому +3

      I know. I've seen A Clockwork Orange maybe half a dozen times, and each time, I never ever felt disturbed. When I saw Private Pyle's creepy Kubrick stare for the first time right before he killed Hartman, it haunted me more than anything in The Shining or any other horror film I've ever seen.
      I think it has to do with the fact that the Vietnam War aspect added an element of realism to Full Metal Jacket, while the events in The Shining and A Clockwork Orange are entirely fictional.

    I think the key to solving this film is in the beginning opening score. It's an amazing variant of Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique No.5. If you carefully listen to it, there's absolutely an underlying Native American tone. This is later referenced in the plot. A testament to the genius of Kubrick.

    Stephen King has the right to hate this film because it is different from his novel but as its own film, you can't deny this film is a masterpiece. From the cinematography, atmosphere and the acting!

    • @pts5217
      @pts5217 5 років тому

      Absolutely. The novel is a more standard haunted house story, where the movie is far more ambiguous and mind-bendy. Stephen King is great, but he needs a talented director to take the ball and run with it bc he can get corny and also go a bit off the rails.

    • @blaisetelfer8499

      King's goofy ass doesn't realize that some of the stuff he wrote when he was on drugs for 30 years can't be translated well into film; it has to be modified.

    A couple of crucial things this review should have mentioned:
    1. There were 3 cuts of this movie: The original US release, which Kubrick recalled and replaced with the second version, which most US viewers know. Then there is the cut Kubrick did for the European release. Each cut was shorter and tighter than the previous. I think the European cut is best.
    2. The music of the Shining was undoubtedly influential. It's notable because most of it was taken from pre-existing classical music. It was the music by Penderecki that was especially influential on future horror soundtracks.

I also really like Jack Nicholson, he fits the role well. Supposedly Stephen King himself hated that, for some reason.
