The Rest in Peace solo is my favorite guitar solo of all time. It has everything. It’s like a separate mini song unto itself. Mind bending technique and a stunning melody. Beautiful stuff.
I read “Rust In Peace” and thought, “why is this person talking about Megadeth?” But I also agreed, my favourite solos of all time are on the Rust In Peace album. … not that we’re supposed to be talking about Marty Friedman. :)
I’m 58 years old and had the great fortune of discovering Extreme/Nuno as it was happening in real time. Long before More Than Words came out. I heard Mutha, Don’t Want To Go To School Today and I was hooked!
I spent months trying to inch up the speed of the hip today lick last year. Thanks for this great video which might help me make something musical out of any muscle memory I’ve gained!
Nuno is a beast! Great to see him getting so much well-deserved credit this past couple of years. For me, his solo in "Get The Funk Out" is one of the greatest of all time - often copied, rarely equalled. His touch and tone are amazing and that's before we even talk about his vocals - he is ridiculously talented.
I'm at the point in my journey of playing. Where this little bit of knowledge is like gold. Being able to change one note and get that much variation is really awesome.Thank you brother
Rob I love you stuff man. I have never had formal training I’ve owned a guitar since I was like 14 (36 now) and am trying to take it serious. You inspire me to pick it up man
I’m 61 and have been incorporating similar notes into the pentatonic. I have always referred to them as my Arabian licks. Now I know the correct musical term. Never too old to learn. I think Page used to use similar progressions? Thank you.
I think the timing is more important than the use of up or down strokes. The first note has the same length as the 2 notes following. This is almost automatically achieved with two downstrokes. But if you are careful about the timing, it is also possible (and possibly easier) with alternate picking ;)
Hey Robert, can you break down Marty Friedman’s solo work on Rust In Peace? His style is so exotic and his vibrato is super wide. I’d love to learn more about his style from you.
Nuno uses a sh1te load of legato in his playing, so he doesn't have to pick every note. Very clever playing. He also uses a lot of economy picking also. Try the second lick with a down up stroke & continue on the upstroke for economy picking. His biggest secret to his playing is his use of legato. Ever try his open pedal string licks? Instead of picking all the notes he uses hammer on. Frank Gambale does similar that's how does guys get that fluidity in their playing. It was a real eye opener for my own teaching & playing to learn this.
Yeah, Robert. Ya did it. I'm def NOT into "shreddin'," no. I'm into melody, and emotive playing, more like Clapton, Hendrix and the like. But, you have captured some NOICE licks! I likes 'em! Really nice riffs, dude. All yer own, too! Legit. I might even try out yo' free-ee-ee fretbode shallenge, ya. 👍 👌 PS: What's a "Dominant pentatonic?" I've never heard of that. Usually "dominant" denotes the flat 7th. Nothin' tado wit's the 3oid. Would ya explain? And BTW, you play it plenty fast.
How is he not in everyone's top 5 list? Maybe you're a fan of the new wave of guitar monsters, but if you're over 25 I don't see how this guy isn't automatically top 5. Craziest guitarist to try to learn. Eddie, Randy, Lynch, even Gilbert are easy to learn compared to him.
Dominant, not diminished. A minor scale or arpeggio has a b3 and b7. In E, that's G and D. If you raise the third you get a 3 and b7 (G# & D) which is a mixolydian or dominant 7 sound.
@RobertBakerGuitar haha. I checked one out last month at The Z fest. Small little gathering in Ann Arbor and he brought a head that I played through the Z best cab and the combo as well. I asked if I could buy the head that day. He laughed and said my daughter told me I better come back with both. I've been playing Z's for 10 yrs now Killer amp. Check out the Prescription RX, great amp. Anyways, love your channel man.
@@RobertBakerGuitar Yes, Am pentatonic is a subset of Am A Minor: A,B,C,D,E,F,G A Minor Pentatonic: A,C,D,E,G Most people start with the pentatonic, and move into the minor scale and fill in the other 2 notes, which in this case are B and F. A Harmonic Minor: A,B,C,D,E,F,G# In your example, starting on E, it would be E Phrygian Dominant. E Phrygian Dominant is the 5th mode of A Harmonic Minor. The notes are: E,F,G#,A,B,C,D If you remove them he B and F, you get the, for lack of a better term, “A Harmonic Pentatonic”: A,C,D,E,G# I understand not trying to over complicate it for beginner guitarists, but giving them some high level theory might help them down the road.
He’s talented for sure, but I feel like he’s a one trick pony in my opinion and that’s only from what I’ve see of his work. Just seems a bit overrated.
Not trying to be cross, but I'm baffled! I know there's always someone better, and there's different tastes, but I'd almost like to see what you find interesting in that case, in a curious, inquisitive way. Not trying to be a d¡ ck
@LilOlFunnyBoy , I think the reason that Extreme songs are mediocre is because his riffs are boring. Nuno has been there since '85 (took a break in the '90s and early '00s). He has been part of all of Extreme's big hits.
Nuno's secret:
1. Be Nuno
2. Play

I love your Nuno content, really man I watch every single one of them and I absolutely LOVE IT. please do more of it!!
Love your videos. Especially the ones about Nuno. The first lick is very Blues Saraceno-y, which is super cool! Thanks for breaking it down!
David Brewster just did a lesson on Blues Saraceno, check him out and add that to your lick arsenal.

Just as I've been searching for videos to help me dig into Nuno's style. This comes with perfect timing
I'm not affiliated with them but Lick Library has a dvd on playing in Nuno's style as well as videos on note for note of quite a few songs.
This is a sick sound! Can’t believe this stuff doesn’t occur to us mere mortals without Nuno’s assistance but so glad you found it Rob. Many thanks 🙏
Love the humble 😊
You ARE a legend
Eric Clapton used dominant pentatonic often in Cream live concerts 4 cd box set you should do a lesson about it ASAP
Nuno is in my Top 5 also 🙌
My Top 3 (in no particular order) Slash, Dave Mustaine & Richie Sambora
Then it’s Nuno & Michael Schenker
I love this little trick! Marty Friedman also does this on the solo of foreclosure of a dream
Great lesson, love Nuno!
New Nuno, whats not to love? Good stuff brother \m/
Please can you do more Nuno videos! Such a versatile player. So much to learn from him
Great mixolydian riffs. Thanks for this!
New for me using the major 3rd. Thank you.
Thanks Rob
That whole take me a long time to get that lick right. Great lesson!!

Nuno's solo on "Rise" is just... well... nuts. LOL, and I say that in the best possible way!
Sounds like Blues Saraceno to me too 😊
Check out David Brewster, he just did a lesson on Blues Saraceno.
Great video!!!
Brilliant.
Thx Man Great Stuff
Thanks man 🤘
So I have no idea who was first on the 2nd lick but Paul Gilbert does the same lick on Rusty Old Boat at 3:20.
Hi Robert, love your channel and content, and I agree: Nuno was (together with Vito Bratta: do you know him? He's so great!) Eddie 2.0 for me...
@Robert Baker who else is in your top 5? Excellent lesson BTW!
More Nuno please Rob🙏

Great vid Robert, but we need to get you a 69 Chevelle SS 396 T to replace that Vett one😎🤘

Would this scale be similar to an E mixolydian scale? I guess that one thing that would determine that is what note the 6th is (C# vs. C).

So mixolydian pentatonic right?
Yeah it's basically Mixo Lite
E Mixolydian Pentatonic?
Check out Bruce Bouillet’s instructional video for a great look at all pentatonic shapes (minor, major and dominant)

I dont get it, G is a note in the E diminished scale so why is it a G# in the E diminished pentatonic?
Dominant, not diminished.

@@LilOlFunnyBoy Oh yea, thanks, dont know why I heard diminished 😅
Is the dominant pentatonic you mentioned same as Myxolidian?
Very similar mixo contains the 2nd and 6th. The Dominant Pentatonic is a scaled down version.

Nuno’s secret trick? He’s freakin’ awesome. It’s simples as that.
14 nots ? Why don’t do 16 and play it in continue ?
That guitar sounds pretty good, what is it?
Thanks dude. it's a 92 RG550
Is that the new Dr Z octal 6 in the background?
Good eye man it sure is. Z sent one too me a few months ago to get some feedback and I bought it on the spot. It's such a killer amp.

Isn’t this just E Phrygian Dominant?
Phrygian Dom would have a Minor 2 and minor 6 in it. E Phrygian Dom would be the same thing as A harmonic Minor.

Mixolydian
Don’t mean to be mean …but this Nuno great player stuff is ridiculous!
note is right but nuno's picking is not like that at all
