Nuno was the only shredder I used to love, because he was so eclectic and musical. His trademark palm muted legato runs and the muted ghost hammer are my favorite techniques. Insanely funky and groovy, sounds like every note weights a ton, no matter how fast he plays.
A giant part of his percussive tone is the Proco Rat Pedal he was in front of his amp all of the time. I just got one, and it nails his tone. The N4 helps too!!
Absolutely correct about the Palm muted legato and arpeggios...... The timing and left hand/ right hand coordination is ridiculous
I was never a big fan of Extreme, but Nuno is a phantastic guitar-player.

I've been amazed by Nuno's playing since I took a chance and bought their debut album on cassette! I was floored by not only his lead playing (which even with my crappy ears, I could hear the heavy EVH influence), but his unique rhythmic ideas as well. I'm happy to see all this new found attention to Extreme since the band has always been on my "most underrated" list. Great job playing Nuno's crazy licks Mike!
Nuno's sense of rhythm, even in his guitar solos always stood out to me. One of my favorites.
you’re spot on about the muted legato sounding almost like picked notes on the N4 - the Lawrence pickups aren’t hyped in the mids like a lot of guitar pickups. they’re very flat. but bright and clear. this makes the attack very even and similar from string to string. so it’s like the ‘sonic illusion’ of being evenly picked, even when hammered-pulled.
Nobody sounds like Nuno..here you can get a taste of that percussive flair..such a beast on any type of playing!
If I know how to play the guitar, it's only thanks to Nuno. He was the one who gave me the faith and courage to pick up a guitar and start learning to play! He's a HUGE musician to me (not just as a guitarist, he also plays bass, piano, drums, writes lyrics and sings. And he does it all with so so much talent. He's a music alien or demon, I don't know lol)
I love seeing Extreme get the respect and attention they deserve! Keep up the great work!
These "Artist Guitar Techniques" vids of yours are DEFINITELY my favorites! You choose what are arguably the "best" ones; and you don't waste time with lengthy, detailed - and really, needless - "breakdowns". Regarding this particular vid: I would add that another great example of Nuno's use of "Blues Double Stops" is found on the track "Warheads", from the "Three Sides..." Album. Please, keep up the great work!

Nuno is an absolute master of the instrument, the way he plays is something that cant be heard or replicated by anyone, he has this percussive, passive-agressive sound while being insanely clean and percise. The first Extreme album has some of his best guitar work and is criminally underrated. I recommend listening to his song for "Guitar's Practicing Musicians, Vol. 2"; Too Much of a Good Thing (Where's the Hook), in my opinion this song is one of the best examples of how versatile, fast and agile Nuno can be.

You have a real personal touch to your videos that I find isn't seen much in other creators, you have some great insight and wisdom that's personally helped me out a lot, and your experiences have really reinvigorated my dream of playing live with a band. My friend had one of those guitars in the early 90s. It was so comfortable to play and sounded so bright - and warm. With fresh strings it was heaven.

You can really hear his 𝗥𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗶 𝗟𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗸𝗿ø influence in all the palm-muted open string licks, especially the two-string licks, which is Tekrø's trademark and gives 𝗧𝗡𝗧 their explosive sound.

That Stephens Cutaway on those Washburns is so cool. Never played a Nuno sig but I have a Washburn Parallaxe with that same cutaway on it and the upper fret access is unrivaled, at least among bolt-ons
Excellent stuff as usual! I would like to add that when Nuno plays the lick at 12:08 (such as in Get the Funk Out among other songs) he starts win an upstroke on the first string, downstroke on the second string, pull off on the second string and finally a hammer-on from nowhere on the third string. This is what makes him able to play it a faster speeds. The same lick or variations of it can be found in the outro solo to It's a Monster and some of the fast runs in Midnight Express and Peacemaker Die. The same picking pattern goes for the last beat of the lick at 18:40 (from Hip Today) and 19:52 (from No Respect).
I remember reading in an interview from 1991 that Nuno uses the nail of his index finger the get the artificial harmonics to really squeal. And as a result of it his nail on the finger doesn't grow properly any longer.

Some great breakdowns here. He is such an Innovative player and has always been one of my favorites but without understanding its techniques I never could touch it.
nice to see a return of this series, I really like the way you present them and will happily watch videos about guitarists I've never heard of as well as old classics. I wld love to see u cover guitarists from different genres, maybe like samba or funk, wld kill for a maggot brain solo breakdown (I know it's not rly a funk song but still). Cos I'm from the UK I feel like some of the bands that people look up to here are quite different, stuff like the stone roses. I wld love to see a video about Johny Marr of the smiths, one of my personal favourite guitarists but obviously that's such a different style. v pie in the sky comment but there are so many great guitarists out there and I want to see a video about every single one!!!

I love to watch the artist series. The stuffs are so intricate. That's why they are the coolest stuffs that I have ever watched. I have been waiting since ages when I would be lucky enough to see the techniques of Adrian Smith and Dave Murray from Iron Maiden in your style. I am also greedy enough to add to my wishlist the hair metal legends - C C Deville from Poison, Robbin Crosby from Ratt and Rachel Bolan from Skid Row. I love the names that you find for those techniques. Sometimes they seem like they're taken straight out of a shonen manga/anime.
You should think about screaming the technique's name as you perform it, though. That's how it works.

A good candidate for this series would be Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse, nobody plays guitar like that guy. When I was just learning guitar, I came to a point where I was stuck in the "blues boxes" and needed a new way to approach the instrument, learning MM songs did that for me because it takes good, simplistic foundational elements that you'll see in Nirvana and Weezer and builds on them in imaginative ways, songs like Night on the Sun, Teeth Like God's Shoeshine, Grey Ice Water, Bury Me With It, and Ocean Breaths Salty will be familiar to anyone that came up learning guitar via Nirvana, Black Sabbath, or Pixies but they'll take you out of your comfort zone, which is what I desperately needed.
In general Modest Mouse are usually removed from conversations about the 90's (often Washington-based) music environment, which is a shame because they absolutely belong in that context.

We saw GenAxe on opening night years ago, and though I absolutely love the other players...Nuno ended up being my favorite of the night.

Great Vid! Can you listen to his population one, Drama Gods, and Mourning Widows stuff and revisit this in a part 2 type thing? He definitely changes it up a little bit with these bands from his typical style and approach with extreme. Not as much ripping, funky stuff but really tasty leads and phrasing. Very zeppelin, Prince, Rush, Yes, 70'sish pop vibe...except its Nuno.

That's so interesting the way you played that lick that you said you first discovered in a Metallica solo - starting on the 12 on high E and ending on 13 on B. I always thought it started on the second note - the 15 on high E and ended on the 12 on the high E - so just shifting the whole pattern to start with one 1 note to the right so its 15 12 on high E to 13 12 13 on B back to 12 on high E and end. I'm guessing the Metallica solo was either Breadfan of Master of puppets. I like that unaccompanied solo he did on the first record way more than Wounded Bumblebee. Speaking of that, one of the guitar magazines transcribed Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee to make it sound like playing it with the delay but without the delay so it has a lot more notes in it but it was so cool because it sounded just like it and was way more technical. I remember when Extreme ended and Nuno went off and did other things that more reflected the music of the times like grunge and more blues based funky rock or whatever that stuff was that he was doing but I thought that was sad that he abandoned who he really was and was capable of for that. But he came back - so cheers! P.S. - I bet a shiny new nickel these guys are watching these videos just to remind themselves what they are doing so they don't forget. Andy Summers famously said he read Guitar Player magazine because they explained himself to himself.

Funny... when you mentioned the double stack shapes using two fingers, it was notoriously used in Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive".
I think the biggest thing for me with Nuno is his ability to make something sound way harder than it is, Play With Me's solo is a perfect example of this.
