Def Leppard are still recording and touring to this day….I saw the tour in the video “Hysteria” back in ‘88…complete with that round moving stage in Moncton, NB Canada…it was amazing.. And welcome to the world of The Thunder God, Rick Allen, one of the most inspirational stories ever…..lost his arm in a car accident just after the band got hot, the band refused to give up on him, and waited for him to get well and rejoin before recording Hysteria. His drum kit is part standard and part electronic, and he uses his foot to play more than just the kick drum….revolutionary at the time.
i remember when this happened; i was 14 and waas a big fan og Pyromania by that time and understood that Rick allen was out of a job. That their drummer had lost their arm, and everyone wondered what they were going to do. When they didn't replace anybody, and Rick came out with one arm, but drumming like he always did.. we carried on and incorporated the knowledge as normal. So I"m always surprised when ppl don't know about the drummer, and how amazing this man was, to learn how to drum with one arm. Plus, he kept his job and that's really the important part. Most people back in the day wanted bands to stay together.. we wanted all original members of bands to partake in the success overall.. it doesn't always happen for some.
Def Leppard is one of the greatest rock bands in history. Their catalog is extensive. This song was from Hysteria, which was one of the biggest albums of the entire 80's.
Def Leppard is my favorite band from that time and it is because they waited on Rick Allen to heal from his accident, have a special drum kit made, and relearn how to play the drums. Not many bands would do that for another member, especially now days. I also love their music. I don't know how many times I've watched their Hysteria concert on YT. They are a class act, and I do love their music. My opinion, they are a class act for waiting for Rick to get it together. It paid off! Rick does a lot of work with the military helping them to overcome trauma. Rick and his wife are co-founders of the Raven Drum Foundation. He also formed the One Hand Drum Co. that makes drum kits for amputees.
One of my all time favorite bands....Drummer Rick Allen, epic for his perseverance and talent. I enjoyed their early music, but they hit a homerun with Pyromania for me...every song is great and not too many albums have done that for me. Hysteria is also a great one, great reactions! Love your catch for the drummer...they don't spot light him at all in the video.
I've seen def leppard so many times since 1981, the most recent being in 2022, they're still killing it. In fact the were on a stadium tour co-headlining with motley crue. The stadiums were full! Unfortunately motley crue was a disappointment because Vince Neil can't remember the words to his own songs, nor can he sing. Come to think of it, the singer, Joe elliott is 64 years old. I don't know how he remembers the words to such a huge catalog of songs, and sounds so great despite his age. I'm 61 and can't even remember my grocery list at the store! Thank you for the great reaction, please do more
I was a set up tech for Def Leppard while they were in Atlanta for three shows. Their official music style was labeled....Pop Metal by Billboard Magazine. DL is one of the most listened to bands of all time. They blew Motley Crue, whom they were touring with, off the stage. An experience I will never forget.
I vaguely remember reading that while Rick was recovering he read an article about a pilot that lost an arm but was able to fit his plane so that he could use his feet to help control the plane. That gave Rick the inspiration to fix a set of drums he could use his feet to help him play. Of course then he had to learn to play them.
DL is my favorite big "party/headbanger" band for their era!! They tone it down as they aged and finally "grew up" a bit. They were definitely the "glam metal" sound like Motley Crue who happens to be my 2nd favorite "banger" group from this era!! That "boom boom slash" sound reminds you of Queen "We Will Rock You".
The venue is call "In The ROund" bands love this venue for this specific reason... They recorded this show it was on VHS, then DVD and now 4k remastered on Blu-Ray... Metallica also have a live show recorded at In the ROund
I was TEAM Def Leppard when I was younger. This band was and still is awesome! Oh I had TONS of flashbacks I really love all of their songs but my fav is still: DEF LEPPARD - "Armageddon It" (Official Music Video) Greetings from Germany
I remember when the accident happened, and when it did, everyone thought it was over. Nope! Personally, I was and remain, amazed. Losing his arm meant having to relearn the basics; Movement, personal care, driving, those things we take for granted. On top of that, learning to drum all over again. That takes intelligence, deternination, and balls the size of boulders. And I love how the band stood by him and waited for him to be ready. They have always been a brotherhood, beyond work.
All these albums released 83 were the perfect 80's crossover. Slick but still maintained enough rawness. Def Leppard Pyromania ZZ Top - Eliminator Yes- 90125 Rush- Signals (82) Every follow up album by all listed went way overboard big 80's production.
Rick Allen loosing his arm did change the sound of the band. Joe Elliot said, "We went from those busy drum fills to the boom boom kack drum fills". It definitely moved them more into a pop sound. They had commercial songs and albums before Hysteria and had already sold millions of records but Hysteria was on another level. In the words of Mutt Lang "it was all killer, no filler". It was not only one of the best albums of the 80s. I think it's a masterpiece and one of the best records ever made... period. Every song on it is a hit.
The group formed in 1977 yes the drummer lost his arm in a car wreck and the band waited 2 years for him to learn how to play drums one arm and get what he needed to do the drumming
I love it when new people get to experience Def Leppard for the first time, and then they realize the drummer's performance... magic! In 2000 a movie was made about them: Hysteria, the Def Leppard story that covers their early career and how they became the group we have all loved over the decades.
Def Leppard had so many hits over the years! Yes Rick lost his arm as many have stated but STeve Clark also passed away and was replaced with Vivian Campbell from DIO and Whitesnake. The hits to check would be Photograph, Foolim', Animals, Love Bites, Gods of War, Hysteria, Too Late For Love, Women, and going back to the early years, Me and My Wine, Let it Go, High and Dry just to name a few! Oh and they were NEVER a Glam Rock band they were always on the Hard Rock side.
Def Leppard’s producer was Mutt Lange who also produced Bryan Adams’ 1991 album “Waking Up The Neighbours”. I was a huge fan of Bryan and listening to Def Leppard feels bit nostalgic as it sounds very familiar to me due to a similar sound those two had whilst working with Mutt. It’s like his signature sound.
What makes the sound of Def Leppard so appealing to me (the Pyromania and Hysteria albums especially) is the way the drums and guitars are larger than life, and the music is smooth as butter. The music from these albums never gets old.
My husband who is now 61, saw them on the photograph tour with his brother. They had awesome seats I think at alpine valley wi, and my husband was jammin with his arena crossed. One of them caught his eye and flipped him a guitar pick that landed in the crook of his arm lol. 40 plus years later we still have that pick on display!! (Next to the pick I caught years later from the doobie brothers!) Life sure goes faster than we think!
Great reaction !! In the 80's the glam bands were bands like Poison, Motley Crue, Guns n Roses, Whitesnake and Def Leppard. Your metal bands in the 80's were bands like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, Judas Priest. Good catch regarding the one armed drummer. The drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a car accident on New Years Eve in 1984 !!
Growing up in the 80’s, you can’t imagine at high school dances when this song came on the pandemonium that ensued 😊 Complete and utter rocking out, it was awesome
I was in high school in the early 80's, (class of '85!) and I was SICK of Def Leppard! It's all anyone talked about, and heard on the radio. But then came the accident! They came back in '88, and I had to check them out because I so respected the band for waiting for Rick, and NOT getting a substitute drummer! I was lucky enough to go to their Milwaukee, WI show in 88, and as a drummer myself, I was ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY! I started practicing playing drums with my arm behind my back! I fell back in love with Def Leppard!
Great band! I had the good fortune of getting to see them in concert live with one of my band mates from a band I was in at the time. The drummer had already lost his arm by then, but guitarist Steve Clark hadn't passed away yet, so he was still with them. That song was from their biggest album, but I still like the one before that one more which was titled "Pyromania". The songs "Foolin", "Too Late", "Die Hard The Hunter" and "Rock of Ages" were killers. The band that opened up for them was called "Tesla". Another great band with songs like "Modern Day Cowboy", "Ez Come, Ez Go" and they also had a song called "Too Late". It was a whole different sounding song then Def Leppard's song with the same name. The Pyromania album did reach number 2 on the Billboard charts, however I'm sure it would have reached number one if it wasn't for Micheal Jackson's album "Thriller". It was number one at the time and stayed at number one for 37 non-consecutive weeks.
Ahh, try "Love bites"! In my eyes, a masterpiece!😍But I have been with them from the start...being a young kid then... All their stuff is good, great och amazing!
There are some bands that function as a business.....but def leppard functioned like a family. Rick Allen's ability to teach himself how to play with one arm and set up the drum the way he did is phenomenal, and the guys waiting for him is truly remarkable. I personally love everything Def Leppard does, especially the way they harmonize
Theyre from sheffield england my home town. If you look back at older videos you will see the drummer (rick allen) with 2 arms. Just before this album hit he lost control of his car and was thrown out but the seatbelt tightened up round his arm severing it. The band refused to carry on until he relearned to play.
Their Hysteria album still holds a record today . That album had a total of 7 singles on Billboard's top 100 count down from August of 87 through October of 88 & 6 of those singles were in the top 10 .
One of the most successful bands of all time. Rock and roll hall of fame, 4 straight albums sold 4,000,000 or more copies, and the best selling record of 1987 right behind Thriller i believe. Definitely monsters of rock
Rick Allen the drummer with one arm. Def Leppard finished the previous tour of the last album, Rick was driving down the road, and got into a bad accident where his seatbelt literally sawed off his arm. The doctors did put the arm back on, but it did not go well and had to be removed. While doing rehab he got an idea for electronic drums, where the parts his left arm would play, would now be played with his left foot, using trigger pedals. He is known as the Thunder God.
Earlier videos show Rick Allen (drummer) with 2 arms but then lost his arm in an accident and needed to relearn how to play but with one arm, so in this video you will see him with only one arm! So inspiring!!
Love the reaction. I would say that every song on this album is fantastic, the one prior to it was amazing, and every album they did has a number of great songs. I was 13 when this album came out, and it has been a favorite since. Please do anything from this album, though I would suggest Rocket, Rock of Ages, Women for rocking songs, or go for Hysteria for a rock ballad. Really so many great songs it is hard to pick.
This was such an awesome show. I was there when they shot this video. It was at The Meadowlands in NJ at what was then known as Brendon Byrne arena. Bon Jovi was the opening act. I was in the upper deck, and didn’t realize a buddy of mine had floor tickets until I saw him in this video.
I've seen them 5 times over the years and they're still just as good as ever..! First time was in the round during this tour..Hysteria tour. It was amazing..!!
Saw these guys on the stadium tour back in 2022 with Poison , motley crue, Joan Jett and they were by far the best band there. They still sound the same today as back in the 80s
I was a hip hop head back then but listened to Def Leopard, like many said they took time off in support of their drummer and many of us doubted he’d come back, he proved us wrong, in the meanwhile another group was becoming Def Leopard popular, that group was Bon Jovi.

Really a great live band. Very high energy even today. Worth every penny for a show.
I am in this video. You can't see me but I am there!! Def Leppard is an outstanding band!!!
Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar... Great song and what story of determination and standing by your friends. ... We all could learn a lesson from this.
Def Leppard - "Bringing On The Heartache"
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
When i was young we called this “Stadium Rock” more anthem sounding than rock/metal!
Love Def Leppard, seen them many times in concert and they still put on a great show. They have many hits.
I went to a Def Leppard concert in San Antonio, just to see Rick Allen play. Dude is amazing
1977. One of the greatest ever! I LOVE Def Leppard.
Thank you for the great reaction, please do more
In the round in your face was my first concert ever snd Steve Clark was Def Leopard!
Def Leppard can't compare with any other band. They have their own original sound that's just pure rock.
Def Leopard is the bomb. Great bangers from them.
Loved how they played this tour in the center of the arenas, so many more good seats.
Oh I had TONS of flashbacks I really love all of their songs but my fav is still: DEF LEPPARD - "Armageddon It" (Official Music Video)
Greetings from Germany
I remember when the accident happened, and when it did, everyone thought it was over.
Nope!
Personally, I was and remain, amazed. Losing his arm meant having to relearn the basics; Movement, personal care, driving, those things we take for granted. On top of that, learning to drum all over again. That takes intelligence, deternination, and balls the size of boulders. And I love how the band stood by him and waited for him to be ready. They have always been a brotherhood, beyond work.
Def Leppard rocked much harder in the early 1980's!!
Definitely. They when from a rock band to a glam band.
Yes they did
All these albums released 83 were the perfect 80's crossover. Slick but still maintained enough rawness.
Def Leppard Pyromania
ZZ Top - Eliminator
Yes- 90125
Rush- Signals (82)
Every follow up album by all listed went way overboard big 80's production.
@@metalmark1214agreed. But I don’t think they were ever heavy metal.
Well of course they did they were younger then
They are just as great live!
Comin under fire n bringing on the heartache are fire songs
i've heard a lot from Def Leppard and they were always a rock band. never thought of them as metal.
So many hits buy very few albums. Which only elevates them in my book.
Let's remember that Mutt Lange also produced several AC/DC albums, including BACK IN BLACK and HIGHWAY TO HELL.
They are still fantabulous live. Thank you
Mad respect for these guys Rick lost his arm in an accident and these guys told the label they we’re keeping him that’s a band of brothers
One of my Top 3 Favorite Bands!! My very first concert in 1993🥰🔥Exactly when they all looked like this!😂😍
What makes the sound of Def Leppard so appealing to me (the Pyromania and Hysteria albums especially) is the way the drums and guitars are larger than life, and the music is smooth as butter. The music from these albums never gets old.
They have some incredible songs!! One of my favorite bands!!!
(Next to the pick I caught years later from the doobie brothers!)
Life sure goes faster than we think!
Rock of ages
My favorite band. Been to two of their concerts. Thanks for reacting.
I have been a fan ever since 81 I have seen them from their hard metal years to now there glamour pop rock years. 40+ years. Their still going strong.
Growing up in the 80’s, you can’t imagine at high school dances when this song came on the pandemonium that ensued 😊 Complete and utter rocking out, it was awesome
There is a reason Rick Allen is called "The Thunder God!"
The sound that you might be thinking of may be Queen's "We will Rock you "?
The definition of a rock band ..... they made great music and this album is a masterpiece.
That one or two second delay and then the look, as what you saw registers in your brain.
I love this song! It was voted one of the top 100 most dirty songs. It’s great!
When I was a strip club DJ it was on a CD release called Music to Strip too
Ahh, try "Love bites"! In my eyes, a masterpiece!😍But I have been with them from the start...being a young kid then... All their stuff is good, great och amazing!
The concert was call In the Round, saw the concert, awesome, RIP Steve Clark lead guitar's 🎸🎸🎸🎤🥁👌😎👏🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
There are a large number of songs that are good. Good start with this one. Bringing on the Heartbreak, Foolin', Rock of Ages. Lots and lots more.
High and dry is also a rocking album. DEF LEPPARD ROCKS
Theyre from sheffield england my home town. If you look back at older videos you will see the drummer (rick allen) with 2 arms. Just before this album hit he lost control of his car and was thrown out but the seatbelt tightened up round his arm severing it. The band refused to carry on until he relearned to play.
Def Leppard were one of a group of the hardest working UK rock/metal bands back in the day.
Their Hysteria album still holds a record today . That album had a total of 7 singles on Billboard's top 100 count down from August of 87 through October of 88 & 6 of those singles were in the top 10 .
Rick Allen, even with one arm, is just downright killing it on drums, amazing.
Good Job, you picked their best for first. One of the top rock songs of all time.
And they are still touring to this day!!!
I've seen them 5 times over the years and they're still just as good as ever..! First time was in the round during this tour..Hysteria tour. It was amazing..!!
Love to see more reactions for Def Leppard.
I saw them on this tour, they played "in the round", so they were in the middle of the stadium. Rick Allen's drum kit rotated slowly all night
