I met Rick many years ago and I can say that he is one of the nicest, most genuine people you will ever meet. He was going through the motions of an autograph line after a show, and when it was my turn I asked him about his kick pedals, because I had just bought the same ones. He perked up (like you want to talk about drums?). He talked drums with me for at least 15 minutes (much to the chagrin of the people after me), still took a pic and signed my ticket. Couldn’t have been a better human being that night. I’ll always treasure that memory. On top of that, I have to point out his drumming ability at the show. The drumming on the albums is pretty straight forward, but he tears it up live.

I remember the news when this happened and I thought to myself that it's all done for him as a drummer. I was pleasantly surprised by the way he came back from his arm getting cut off.. the band stood by him and he learned a whole new way of playing drums.. nothing but respect and love for him and the band.

I remember it too, but I was really little and I said something about using electronic drums. I had just seen them in a store and I remembered the foot pedals. My sister was watching TV and was crying, so when I mentioned that she called me stupid.
When "Hysteria" came out, I said to my sister, "who's stupid now?"

The first time Rick played with Def Leppard after the accident was at the Donnington Monsters of Rock show, the one up was Ozzy headlining, Scorpions on just before him then Def Leppard with Motörhead before them, Bad News before them and Warlock opening the show. Ozzy, Scorpions and Motörhead were stupendous and Warlock were awesome and it was the only time I saw them live. Bad News were just a joke ! Don’t know why they ever got added to the bill.
Now, Pyromania had done very well for Def Leppard in the U.K. and Europe but it was 3 years before this show and Hysteria was still a year out from release. They played Love & Affection the only new song and the rest were classics as it was only 40-50 mins for their slot. As Joe was introducing a song he changed his mind and his voice started to crack and tears welled up in his eyes. He did an awesome welcome back to Rick who was coaxed out to the front of stage and everyone started chanting and clapping, whistling, and roaring with not a dry eye anywhere, big burly bikers reduced to gibberish wrecks !!! That was THE moment of the day and their set was just magical as everyone wasn’t sure what it was going to sound like was Rick going to have another drummer along side him ???? When he came out and they hit straight into Stagefright and he was thundering away on the kit as usual it was a mythical moment.

One of those rare people in the world! Bless this man!!!
He figured out what he needed as far as equipment to play the drums as well as he did before the accident.
Oh and by the way, the band after their close friend lost his arm decided that it was over and they were going to break up. But this man laying there with one arm in the hospital bed told them that the hell they were going to break up. He was going to recover from this and figure out what he needed to do to play the drums again. He actually held the band together when they thought it was over. Even at a young age he had that much driving determination.

I love Def Leppard and how they waited for Rick Allen to recover and gave him their support. Rick suffered so much, but he is an inspiration to so many others plus military personnel who suffer from PTSD and who have also lost limbs. By the way, I was watching some of your Joe Walsh reactions. For your own pleasure, check out, Joe Walsh JBLM (live 11/7) He talks about supporting veterans and he is so funny when he tells some troops how he wrote, Life's Been Good To Me. I think you will enjoy it.

Saw the band before & after. Great both times. What a wonderful drummer AND human being. But I'm not surprised. The members of Def Leppard became good friends with the members of Queen starting in the 80's, especially close with our dear Dr. Brian May, who inducted DL into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Great musicians & good human beings all around.💙☮💙

I remember that accident just like it was yesterday. My high school class graduated in 1984 and as fans, my friends and I thought maybe Def Leppard would be no more. We couldn't have been more wrong. It speaks volumes without a single word being spoken about WHO the members of Def Leppard really are as human beings. They never gave up on Rick Allen, they never gave up on each other even after the loss of Steve Clark. More importantly, Rick Allen never gave up on himself and he has continued to inspire people from all walks of life. What he and Lauren have given back to the fans, community and Veteran's is OUTSTANDING!!! Well done Sir. Well done indeed. Thanks for sharing Jamel!

I knew the crash story and his awesome comeback. I knew they had rigged his kit so he could do a lot with his feet. I've followed them off and on since the 1980s. I even played some of his songs when I was a DJ in the late 1980s. I admire the heck out of him and his abilities. I really appreciate you putting this reaction on, I had forgotten how much he struggled. I had never seen this particular interview. I had no idea he works with Wounded Warrior Project too. I'm 14 years older than he is (that's 66 next week) and I've lost a lot of muscle tone due to Multiple Sclerosis. This interview reminds me that I CAN do what I want, I just have to want it enough. Thanks man.

A lot of people go into "self-pity" mode when something tragic happens in their life. They shut down. They give up. This man didn't give up. He came back better, and he came back a better person. When a person opens their eyes and comes out of self-pity mode, they find that they can overcome anything. Self-pity mode can defeat a person real quick if they let it. If a person will get themselves out of self-pity mode, GOD will do the rest. HE will show you and lead you down a path to victory. This man was determined to overcome his situation. And I guarantee you, God was with him the rest of the way. All he had to do was get out of his self-pity mode.

What a great video and an even greater human in Rick Allen. It's go great that he didn't let his accident stop him. Truly an inspiration with his generosity. Not just for donating money to help others but also donating his time to help others and show that there is a way to carry on with your life after a devastating event in life. Rick Allen is more than just a good human.

  • @gulfgal98

While in the hospital, Rick told the rest of the band that he had figured out a way to continue drumming. Even though they were not sure his idea would work, they decided that it would be up to Rick to decide if he was going to continue with the band. Less than two years after his accident, Rick was playing full time again and very few people who do not know the story even realize he is playing with one arm.. His physical recovery was very fast, but his mental recovery too a lot longer. Rick did have a problem with drugs and mostly alcohol before he finally quit drinking. Lauren has been extremely positive in recognizing his PTSD and helping him deal with it.
BTW, Def Leppard is a five piece band. In the 40 plus years they have been playing, they have only had a total of seven members. Pete Willis who was a founding member was fired due to his alcohol abuse that affected his ability to play. Steve Clark died in 1991 from alcohol poisoning combined with prescription drugs. The current lineup has been together for over 30 years. As RIck Allen once said, "I think we really like each other."

I saw them October 87, right after he had re- learned how to play and right after their soon-to-be huge album was released. I thought " he'll be able to keep the beat, but I'm not expecting any solos or anything remotely difficult". I was dead wrong, there was a huge solo where he was doing that triplet effect used on Moby Dick( zeppelin), Steve Gadd Aja or the ending of "let it go". I was impressed and would have been impressed if he had both arms. He obviously practiced relentlessly to relearn something that advanced

They had to record it in a very different way. All parts were recorded in different countries, at each members home studios. Except Rick Allen, his parts were programed by Ronan McHugh, the producer for the band. The way that it was done, u would think that they were all in the same room. Its fantastic. I remember the accident- how they tried to reattach his arm, but it developed gangrene after a while and ended up being amputated. It was a roller coaster of emotions- sadness about the accident, hopefulness about the reattachment, and then profound loss when he lost it again. We didn’t know what would happen to the band for a while. Since then, I have seen Def Leppard 4 times in concert, and at every show- when Rick is introduced, he still gets the longest and loudest applause of any of the other members, by a mile. And we still shed tears seeing him play. He is such an inspiration. ❤️🔥🔥🔥🥁 🤘🏻🤘🏻

I hadn't seen this before but thank goodness I found it through following you. Waaay back when, I was fairly deep into Def Leppard, I eventually got a big crush lol on Joe for a while. Anyways, once MTV was finally added to our cable line up and you didn't have to pay extra to have it, I would sometimes watch Headbangers Ball to see Def Lep and some of the other rock 'Hair bands' at the time. I kinda raised my then 3 yr old Niece on Rock music lol. I remember hearing on MTV about the accident that Rick had and thought how awful and prayed all would be healed with him.
Years later, I by happenstance...won a radio contest to go see them in concert near Atlanta, hotel and a pre concert meeting was included. Sadly as much as I very much wanted to meet all of them, I could only meet 2 and it was the 2 I adored the most- Joe and Rick Savage. (Not the Rick- drummer.) I have to say, thank heavens for RS because...in meeting my crush, Joe...not sure what his deal was but he sigh....only spoke but a couple of words to me then we all got pics, then RS stayed and actually talked with myself and my sister for about 10 mins then moved on to chat with a few others. What strange is sadly too, RS...a few months after we met him, he was struck with- Bells Palsy. Which made him have to take a break from the group. Def Lep has been through more than some groups but managed to push through it all. 😊I give huge kudos to Rick Allen for getting through everything he has and gosh, what a talented artist on canvas he is! Blessings to him!🕊🙏🙏

A great story. I was so impressed with him, but maybe more impressed that the band waited for him to be able to come back instead of dumping him when he could no longer play.

It’s funny how you get different impressions of people. I also remember when Rick had his accident. Perhaps because I live in the US and he was living in England, I don’t remember many stories about his mental condition. Once, while in the hospital saying “well I only have one arm. Better start using my foot” and another where he was talking about running into another drummer who had a broken arm at a rock festival - Rick joked “have it off”. To me, that said he was pretty well adjusted. Lauren saying he had never dealt with the trauma blew me away and broke my heart.

Great video J, you are doing interesting work with your selections. I got used to live action filming, never explored this side of creativity. Catch ya next time!

His come back was amazing but his multiple arrests for domestic violence... dampens him inspirational. Doesnt matter how many limbs you have... dont beat your partner.

I've said this a few times & I'll say it again . Because of the character the rest of the band at the time Rick Allen lost his arm by not replacing him & by putting their own careers on hold until Rick Allen could come back & not just because they make great songs . Is why Def Leppard is the greatest band ever .

Got on your channel for the Calle 13 and Residente reactions and DUDEEEE thanks so much for taking the time and appreciate them as much as we do in Latin America. Your reactions and the way you speak are so genuine, you're the best man.
May I suggest you react to Cyberhex by Motionless In White? They might be a little different but they kick ass for sure. Also Wasp, Another Life and Puppets 3 by the same band are amazing songs you should totally listen.
I also wanna suggest you listen to Cactus by Gustavo Cerati and Mugre by Wos both artist from my country, it'd be amazing if you reacted to those too. Sending much love and good vibes from Argentina ♥

This is such an amazing story and Rick is such an incredible person for soldiering through such a challenging event in his life..
One interesting point- I don’t think there are many musicians that could come back from such a horrific accident AND also
I think other than percussion/ drums- unfortunately, there are few if any instruments that would ALLOW a person to return to their instrument having lost an arm… IOW, one must need both arms to play most instruments 🤔🤷‍♂️

Thank you thank you thank you. I remember when this happened and I felt bad for him but damn good for him! So I was watching someone elses video and they said that they get complaints that they are too positive and that they like everything i.e they don't be hatin enough. I could watch videos of people on the worst day of their lives all day long if I wanted to but I prefer to let a positive view rule the day. Now back to the "Karen" videos. God bless.

Hey Jamal I really enjoy your content . It's people like you that give social media hope . I was watching your segment about Rick Allen def Leppard drummer and I heard you coin the phrase young wild and free which reminded me of a song I loved in late 70s called Magic Power by a 3 piece band from Canada called Triumph Magic Power give it a listen I think you'll love it They have another song lay it on the line. Try that one too

Song suggestion: Krokus-Ballroom Blitz. It’s a hard rock adaptation of sweet’s song of the same name which I think you’d like 😄
