Rik's a lovely guy, you just have to know him quite well if he invites you around for dinner as he chops everything using a foot to hold the veg, in place. :P There's a whole movie there, not so much about him losing the arm but the events afterwards, getting him back in the band. Fromthe tech redesigning drum kits, to Quo's drummer (who was standing in) not making it to a Irish date, on the tour and Rik having to do the whole thing. Possibly one of the greatest live moments, in rock. If I remember, he had to have his shoulder joint replaced, on his other arm, from too much water skiing. :D

Yes, the drummer only has one arm. Rick Allen lost it in a car wreck in 1985. Instead of replacing him, the band waited for him to get well enough to perform again. With a specially designed drum kit, he now plays the parts he would have with his left arm with his left foot. My daughter, about 15 years ago, saw them, Foreigner and Cheap Trick in concert. I get a text from her "Dude the drummer only has one arm, I wanna have one arm". Kids.

He was ejected, but due to the seatbelt wrapping around his left arm, the arm was torn off and found up under the dashboard. He designed the first electronic drum kit and carried on. This makes you wonder about people who complain about their 1st world problems. There are people out there waaaaay worse off than us and carry on with a smile.

Yes, he has one arm. He was like 21 when the accident happened. Check out the album High N Dry. It came out in 1981. Pyromania came out in 1983, and Hysteria in 1987. This band has been a lot throughout their career. Pete Willis, one of their original guitarists, had to leave the band due to his drinking after the 1981 album. Their other guitarist Steve Clark (The guy with the long blond hair in this video) died of alcohol poisoning in 1991, at only 30. And, of course, the loss of the drummer's arm in 1984. Rick Allan is his name.
We were at the Cincinnati show from that tour! My sister and I had the best time! Have to admit it was overwhelming enough that we shed a few tears at times.
I went to this tour when they stopped in San Diego. I was very impressed with Def for how amazing they sound even after all these years. Vocally, guitar, drums, etc it was a great show.

There is a movie about the whole ordeal and the band, called Hysteria, also the same name of their most popular album that this song was on.

I grew up on this band, from 1983’s Pyromania. The video is not the original one, as this is an extended version of the song. The original starts with the words ‘Step inside, walk this way, you and me babe, hey hey!’ They also produced extended versions of Excitable and Armageddon It (all from 1987’s Hysteria). To compensate for the loss of his left arm, Rick Allen had a drum set specially built to be able to use his feet (to compensate).
I saw this tour in Australia “In the Round” at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne Australia. It was absolutely amazing. And yes….. the girls all did have the big hair 80’s makeup

When they first hit the big tim he wrecked his Corvette on a curved and lost an arm. But they stuck beside him and he taught himself to keep drumming with one arm and special drums. Now he is back to a almost normal set.

Back in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina hit, Rick Savage ( bass player) put his jacket up for auction he wore it at the 1988/89 MTV Awards... it's a beautiful light blue leather jacket!!! I ended up paying $1000 USD for it!! I seen these guys 18 times, and they're doing another tour here soon!!!

When Rick lost his arm in the car wreck the band refused to get a new drummer and told Rick that they will wait until he did his rehabilitation and relearn how to play the drums again and design himself a completely different drum set that he could play with just one hand. He says that even now he is still dealing with PTSD of his wreck even after all of these years.
His drum set was specially designed for him. He has foot pedals. His left foot does the job his left arm would have been doing. If you watch the video there are times you can see his left foot come down when you hear the snare drum part.

Actually it was quite fashionable to have tight jeans, ripped jeans, long hair. Today’s mean look like crap compared to then. Now the men don’t even get the wrinkles out of tshirts when they put them on and then pants down to the knees is a fashion statement but it’s definitely better then than now for sure.
A little history on the song, the video, the album, and the band at the time this was released. After cranking out their first three albums is a span of slightly over one year it would be four almost five years before Hysteria came. Addiction issues with one of the guitarist and the horrific amputation of the drummer’s left arm put the band’s future in doubt. Massively in debt the album came out and things were……. Ok…. So they release a single with a heavily produced conceptually artistic video…. And the response was …..mild. They repeat the process two more times to the same lackluster response….. in an era of the artistic video def Leppard was floundering. Just before they were gonna have to pull the plug , declare bankruptcy, cancel their tour and sign the rights to their IP to the record label to pay off their debt the released the only video they could make…. A “live” video that used stock archival footage from the tour with the studio audio enhanced with subtle fake crowd noise. And they the silliest song on the album… “pour some sugar “ is a reference to the practice of putting a bit of granulated sugar on the tip of a male dogs penis when he has lost self control from the scent of a female dog in heat. And the single/video/album/tour exploded It reminded old fans and introduced new fans to the energy of a live def leppard performance. Especial since the band had introduced two new concepts to their live performance, a laser light show and a theater in the round stage…. …. While a logistical nightmare it tripled the number of first rows seating etc etc etc….
It’s hard to listen to this one for me. My mom was into DL and lots of 80’s rock but she’s gone now. Weird how music can transport you right back to vivid memories.

If you want to know just how scandalous that tour by Def Leppard was, ask your aunt if she knows any of the extreme stories about the things that happened underneath that stage whenever band members had a moment where they didn't need to be on stage (during, say, a guitar or drum solo). Those are great stories and explain why the band members smile a lot.

All the other band members took a cigarette 🚬 break. Lange heard 👂 the chords and liked 👍 them. When the other members returned, they finished the rest of the song 🎵.

The drummer was in a car accident and his seatbelt cut off his left arm so the band built a new drum set just for him to be able to play with one arm

My mom got to see Def Leppard on that tour in 88
His drum set was specially designed for him. He has foot pedals. His left foot does the job his left arm would have been doing. If you watch the video there are times you can see his left foot come down when you hear the snare drum part.

The drummer Rick Allen lost his arm in a bad car wreck where the seatbelt tore his arm off it's a sad story though and y'all should listen to another great song by Def Leppard called "love bites"

Actually it was quite fashionable to have tight jeans, ripped jeans, long hair. Today’s mean look like crap compared to then. Now the men don’t even get the wrinkles out of tshirts when they put them on and then pants down to the knees is a fashion statement but it’s definitely better then than now for sure.

A little history on the song, the video, the album, and the band at the time this was released.
After cranking out their first three albums is a span of slightly over one year it would be four almost five years before Hysteria came. Addiction issues with one of the guitarist and the horrific amputation of the drummer’s left arm put the band’s future in doubt. Massively in debt the album came out and things were……. Ok…. So they release a single with a heavily produced conceptually artistic video…. And the response was …..mild. They repeat the process two more times to the same lackluster response….. in an era of the artistic video def Leppard was floundering. Just before they were gonna have to pull the plug , declare bankruptcy, cancel their tour and sign the rights to their IP to the record label to pay off their debt the released the only video they could make…. A “live” video that used stock archival footage from the tour with the studio audio enhanced with subtle fake crowd noise. And they the silliest song on the album… “pour some sugar “ is a reference to the practice of putting a bit of granulated sugar on the tip of a male dogs penis when he has lost self control from the scent of a female dog in heat. And the single/video/album/tour exploded
It reminded old fans and introduced new fans to the energy of a live def leppard performance. Especial since the band had introduced two new concepts to their live performance, a laser light show and a theater in the round stage…. …. While a logistical nightmare it tripled the number of first rows seating etc etc etc….
It’s hard to listen to this one for me. My mom was into DL and lots of 80’s rock but she’s gone now. Weird how music can transport you right back to vivid memories.
Music is powerful! My brother passed away in 2012 and there are still songs that make me ball when I hear them. I’m so sorry to hear about your mom. I’m sure that is very hard. Hang in there. Maybe one day you will listen to 80’s rock to reminisce on the memories. 😊-Dallas

If you want to know just how scandalous that tour by Def Leppard was, ask your aunt if she knows any of the extreme stories about the things that happened underneath that stage whenever band members had a moment where they didn't need to be on stage (during, say, a guitar or drum solo). Those are great stories and explain why the band members smile a lot.

Def Leppard just started their Stadium Tour with Journey and the Steve Miller Band/Cheap Trick last weekend. You should most definitely check them out if they come anywhere near you. Leppard sounds better now than they did 30 years ago.
