I watched your videos initially to help me start with my air dry clay journey, and I am thankful to you for these amazing videos. 🙂 I am stuck at painting them with acrylic paint. No matter what brush or paint brand I use, it ends up with brush strokes. How can I make it smooth looking? Have you faced it too initially?
Thank you, good to hear you are enjoying your air dry clay. When painting with acrylic a nice soft brush made for acrylic paint works best and you will most likely need to do 2-3 coats of paint to achieve a smooth finish, if you have streaks do another coat, then a varnish over the top should help blend the finished look, hope that helps, best of luck 😊

Thank you, yes, when mixed into the clay it ‘swallows’ it a lot so you need to use plenty which is not ideal, so it’s better to incorporate into the outside of the clay or roll it in the mica powder ❤️
When I was younger I didn't have money to buy polymer clay so i just self made cold porcelain and mix it with some acrilic paint and it really worked, now I don't have money for polymer clay either 😂 but I'll try coloring air dry clay
I have just begun to play around with clay after years of painting, beading & even candlemaking. I have been experimenting and having an absolute blast. I am trying to incorporate or use various art materials together in this year's journey, which naturally has led me to clay, paint, beads, fibers etc.. but I am wondering could I use oil pastel to color my clay before using it make something, and can i use it to color it after i have created something? I have seen i can use inks, paint, watercolor paint, mica powders, even eyeshadow but nothing about oil pastels.
Sounds absolutely wonderful all your creations. Yes give it a go and see what happen, I can’t think of a reason it wouldn’t work, recently I added oil pastel into the clay to add flecks and veins, worked great, just make sure all is sealed once dry, enjoy 😊❤️
Thank you very much! Now that my mask has dried and i have sanded it down - I'm ready to paint. Your videos and answers to my questions have been really usefull, but i have just a few mkre Do you know how long it takes single coats of acryllic paint, mod podge and spray laquer to dry? And how many coats do ypu usually add of each?
Well done, what a fab project. Always takes longer than you think, make sure 100% dry not just touch dry, until you touch it or allow it to touch any surface, you then have to turn over and repeat, spray lacquer depends on brand it again longer than you think, like 24hours+ for mine. You could try the whole process on a smaller piece of clay first so you know what you’re doing, rather than spoil your project if you’re unsure. Enjoy ❤️
Hello! Newbie here! I wanna ask the part where you roll in the colors. Would it have side effects on the air dry clay? Would it not melt or get cracks? Would it be longer to harden? That is all my questions, thank you!
I have craft acrylic (craft smart brand) and the same brand of clay (in white), but for some reason, the paint does not roll into the clay well. I tried red and all it did was make the clay liquid and pink. Maybe I didn't use enough clay. But I only used a teeny tiny drop of paint using a toothpick. It was for a piece of a 1/12 scale miniature. I didn't want to use more clay than I needed but it still liquidized when the paint was introduced... Edit: Oh also thank you for the video! I couldn't find a single article that showed/mention craft acrylic. Only hard body artist grade acrylic paint.
@@RedRockingBird my idea: I will color the clay with acrylic paint in deep blue, purpel, lighter blue and glitter. Then I will use the deep blue for the dish and add sparkles of the other colored clays and try to make a galaxy dish. Later I will paint star constellations on it. At least that is my plan...didn't work with clay before. 😊
Sarah, have you ever tried to colour air dry clay using chalk pastels/watercolour artist chalk pastels? I have seen that some people use the chalk pastels to add shading to their polymer clay designs like giving 'baked' goods like cookies and cakes realistic baked effects like crust etc and I wonder if the chalk pastels could be shaved so that you have a powder and then mix the powder into the clay like you would with paint to colour the clay etc. It would probably give a subtle pastel like colouring to the clay pieces but it might be worth a shot! I just wanted to see if you or if anyone else has tried this so that I know what to expect as I have some clay and I also have a box of chalk pastels 😄 If no one else has tried this, I might try it and see what happens! I am also going to use your slip method too soon with my left over pieces of clay 😉 Love your channel!!
Hi, I haven't no, but sure it will work well, but if you incorporate into the clay it may take quite a lot as I find shop bought air dry clay really 'swallows' this kind of thing, unless you have something richly pigmented. Worth a go, try with a small piece and see how it looks when dry, as can look different once dry. Thanks, Sarah
@@RedRockingBird Hello again! This evening I used some watercolour paints in little tubes to colour some of my DAS clay - I wanted to achieve a caucasian skin tone and I initially used a premixed colour that I thought would turn out nicely but it was more of a gold colour so I didn't use that one. I did try the primary red and yellow though from the set of paints that I was using along with some white and I managed to get a pinky flesh sort of colour. I then used a little dressmaking pin to sculpt a little ear. The ear looks pretty good, it is only basic with very basic details but for a first attempt with colouring the clay and making something like that, it turned out quite nicely! I will try some watercolour pastel chalks that I have soon but the watercolour paints actually worked quite nicely and I am surprised that the clay stayed quite wet for a while!
Sounds wonderful, glad it’s working out well, lovely to experiment and see where it takes you ❤️ (I don’t always see reply messages on here, if I don’t reply, best start a new message as I get notified of only them for some reason) ❤️
Hello, and thank you for all your videos. But what have I done wrong? , My sons and I got really excited to get stuck in with rolling in the colouring..... but it hardly took the colour like in your video here, it was very pale. Is it the brand? Though I bought the paint through your amazon shop. And we also tried the marble effect but the three colours merged into one. So it was like we so wasted the paint. We are really wanting to make a go of air dry clay. (This is only our fourth session)
Hi thank you, glad you are enjoying. I tend to colour smaller amounts of clay as the clay does seem to 'swallow' the paint really quite easily. Colours like blue with higher pigment levels will colour the clay easier, but yes when adding the colour into the actual clay they do come out quite a bit paler and more subtle. It's fun to add some sand into the clay too for some texture. I hope you keep going with your projects.
Hi! Great videos! Any tips how to paint inside the letters (if you use stamps to imprint) I’ve attempted with acrylic paint and a fine paintbrush but it just looks messy! Any help will be very appreciated! X
Thank you, you could try with watercolour on the bare clay instead of acrylic, always do a test piece first though to practice and see what happens. I know what you mean though, if the letters are small it can be very tricky to get neat. I've stamped with the ink pad on the clay before too, but just make sure you only get the ink on the letter and not the background. Also did you see this video: ua-cam.com/video/nJ4VWhGoB-0/v-deo.html this is my preference for lettering
Yes I absolutely love that idea!! Will definitely try you’re bee! I just really like the look of the clay imprinted. I’ll try painting the letters and stamping whilst clay is still wet, maybe I’ll hunt for a tinier paintbrush and practice, practice.
I am always marvelled by your videos! The wonderful ideas and tips you share are absolutely amazing, especially considering how simple, inexpensive and accessible they are! Congratulations and thank you for the extraordinary teacher you are! Btw, the first piece where you used glitter, is it safe to not seal it with mod podge or a varnish, or once dry the glitter will not stick to your fingers or anything it touches?
I know what you mean with acrylic paint, i often do a slightly thinned down (with a little water) acrylic paint first coat on the bare clay, then let each layer dry for much longer than you think between coats, then it needs a top coat of lacquer/varnish etc to seal it all in, as you let it dry don’t let it touch anything where it is wet. As an alternative try watercolour on the bare clay and seal. See my watercolour on air dry clay video and my air dry clay playlist. Thanks
I was wondering if you’ve experimented with colour pigment powder?. I’ve seen a ceramic using pigment the powder is mixed into the clay to achieve really vibrant colours.
Air dry clay really ‘swallows’ colour, I’ve coloured it with a few things like mica powder and it takes a lot to colour, it goes further on the outside. My homemade clay recipe takes colours in much better as it is clearer
Thank you, seal it back up and it will stay good for a long time, put an extra layer or 2 of bag or wrap if you want to be even more sure, but I have a terracotta one that’s been open ages and is fine still x
please tell me what acrylic paint takes less coats I have alot of trouble esp with dark colors such as black or brown. then why is my dah air dry clay chipping. one more question from this newbie what is the best water shield making the clay water proof? thanks for your expertise I love watchingn
Better quality acrylic paint goes in better, but with any you have to do 2 or 3 coats of paint. I currently really like using resin to coat my clay but also polyurethane varnish or spray lacquer, it really is personal preference and what works for you ❤️
Hi! Can you water acrylic down, so that it looks translucent? I don't want the vibrant colour for what I'm making. I want it to look more like a "3d water colour". Or would inks work better for this? Thanks :)
Acrylic is used for an opaque look really, not translucent, although you can of course water acrylic down, I have never needed a translucent look, so best to just experiment on some scraps of clay, waterproof inks could work but I have never tried this. Enjoy your project, thanks for watching
Hi! Kindly help me please? I tried painting my fully dried air dry clay with acrylic paint, and put 3 layers in it, but the clay isn’t absorbing all the paint. It’s leaving these ugly white spots, making it have a bark or wood-like texture. I don’t have any other painting materials. Kindly tell me what to do? Thank you!
I want it to have a smooth finish or a smooth texture using my paint. But the thing is, it keeps leaving brush strokes, no matter how much coats of paint I add on it
Hi, the clay won’t absorb the acrylic paint, but form a layer in the top, unfortunately some paints you need a few coats before you get a full bodied look, you might find the same brand but a different colour gives you better results with fewer layers. For example with my current acrylics the yellow takes about 6 coats to cover but the turquoise covers fully in 2 coats. Then a good varnish over the top, best of luck
Hello! I'm done painting my clay with acrylic and yesterday, I used a pd glue (mod podge alternative) to seal it. Some paint come off while I'm sealing it. Right now I'm sealing it with acrylic matte but some parts of the paint still come off (paint chipping) Any recommendations?
It sounds like it’s not drying fully before coming into contact with something, so is peeling, every layer needs to be completely dry before adding another. I’d also try a different varnish as a glue is not the best
Hi, I think underglaze is more often used for clay that will be fired in a kiln, so I wouldn't add it to air dry clay. In this instance my 'underglaze' is acrylic paint and then i add varnish or lacquer once dried. Hope that helps.
Acrylic paint works well and I do watercolour too, I made a video on water colour and air dry clay, other paints like poster, gauche and some pens may smudge, always do a test piece first ❤️
@@basiratsiddiqui6467 most often i paint with acrylic paint but some people want alternatives, I have another video with various other fun alternative ways to colour the clay coming soon
So... I always had gesso after I've done a pc with air-dry clay, that is not colored. But, if I color the clay, I would not want to add gesso, so that would turn it white. So, what do you do next after you've colored the clay and it has dried? Help... Help??? 😊
@@RedRockingBird I'm sorry maybe you misunderstood my question? I already tinted this batch of clay with food coloring. Can I paint little decorations first before I varnish them... I can't just gesso them they will turn white. So... ?
@@RedRockingBird Yep... Thnku. I put some tiny little flowers on my dishes and plates and then I varnished them. And I found out that adding gel food coloring to color your clay, before you make the item, works wonders. And it shaves off so much time! Did I pick this up from you, I'm not even sure, but your tutorials are just wonderful.
Hi, there are many options, here I ‘seal’ with the acrylic paint and then seal the whole thing with spray lacquer, you can use an acrylic primer first if you wish or gesso if you have it, I currently don’t have any gesso. Try out different ways on some small items and see what you prefer, we all do things a little differently. On the mini trinket pot I used an acrylic medium first, then acrylic as I was doing a lighter finishing coat, but I am currently doing a succulent planter and went straight in with acrylic as I will be putting several layers of polyurethane varnish over the top and it will all be fully fully sealed then. ❤️
This was a marker pen like a sharpie, if you want to varnish them after it would be best to use an acrylic paint pen, as varnishes can reactivate the ink and ruin the piece. Some pens I can use mod podge to seal the ink and then varnish, I always do a small test piece before hand to make sure the project goes to plan. Thank you ❤️
I have, it’s one of the methods I use in my ‘Glaze’ air dry clay video, longevity really depends on the brand/type as some people have experienced it going tacky after a few years. I love the gloss it gives pins etc ❤️

Thank you, so lovely of you. I’d always seal otherwise yes the glitter would just come off
im painting my clay piece with acrylic paint but its lifting up/peeling, what can i do to stop this please
Thanks
Red Rocking Bird thank you!!! Definitely gonna try this
@@presleygirI hope it goes well
Can you tell me when to put acrylic paint on the air-dry clay? Like after giving it the shape or after it dries? Love ya!
Let it dry fully before painting, always.
Enjoy your projects ❤️
im trying my first photo transfer today
I hope this worked out for you, how did it go?
I was wondering if you’ve experimented with colour pigment powder?. I’ve seen a ceramic using pigment the powder is mixed into the clay to achieve really vibrant colours.
Air dry clay really ‘swallows’ colour, I’ve coloured it with a few things like mica powder and it takes a lot to colour, it goes further on the outside. My homemade clay recipe takes colours in much better as it is clearer
Great information, thank you. Is it possible to marble with glitter? 🤔
Yes you can, but would need to use quite a bit as air dry clay does tend to swallow things like glitter so they are not as well seen 😊
@@RedRockingBird Do you think it would help to "saturate" the adc with paint first?
@@robot7759 it would end up pretty wet, more glitter or paint on the final outer layer would work better, but good to have a play and experiment
@@RedRockingBird Thanks 😊 I will and let you know. Have a nice weekend.

I’m new at this….. I am using a pottery wheel and air dry clay from amco. Can this be treated the same as your air dry clay items?
Hi, I believe you can se a wheel but just clean down well after so that the clay doesn’t air dry onto it 😊 enjoy
Thanks for this. Having added paint to Colour the clay, does the clay take longest set?
If it’s acrylic paint then no won’t take longer
@@RedRockingBird thank you❤

Love your channel xx
Thank you, seal it back up and it will stay good for a long time, put an extra layer or 2 of bag or wrap if you want to be even more sure, but I have a terracotta one that’s been open ages and is fine still x

Wow i want to start doing dry clay art can i paint it woth oils paint? And for the shining at the end can i use Top-x spray paint ? Please answer
I haven’t ever painted it with oils, they’d take a long time to dry, I do love to spray paint air dry clay though 💜
please tell me what acrylic paint takes less coats I have alot of trouble esp with dark colors such as black or brown. then why is my dah air dry clay chipping. one more question from this newbie what is the best water shield making the clay water proof? thanks for your expertise I love watchingn
Better quality acrylic paint goes in better, but with any you have to do 2 or 3 coats of paint. I currently really like using resin to coat my clay but also polyurethane varnish or spray lacquer, it really is personal preference and what works for you ❤️
love your videos, just got some air dry clay for me to tinker with this weekend! ❤️❤️❤️
Enjoy, sure you will, thank you 😊
Can you paint the air dry clay while you wait for it to solidify?
Not with something like acrylic paint no, you have to let it fully dry first, but I have another video coming soon with an option
Hi, this is probably a silly question, but what is the paper you're using?
Hi, baking parchment or greaseproof paper 😊
does alcohol ink work with the clay either before or after
I’ve only dry it for hydro dipping, you can see this in my marbelling clay video
I've been told that aquarelle paint works fine on air dry clay, but if you only have acrylics you can water it down a bit.
watercolour/aquarelle, acrylic and acrylic watered down are all good on air dry clay
@@RedRockingBird Thanks, some really good suggestions here :) appreciated x

Hi, what brand acrylic paint do you use? I’m based in uk also and never know which one is best lol thank you !😁
Hi, I've always used daler rowney but currently have a cheaper pack of chiltern, both can be found here: www.amazon.co.uk/shop/redrockingbird
@@RedRockingBird thank you so much :)
should I paint the clay before or after it dries?
Let it dry completely before you paint it 👍
Are you using grease paper with the glitter?
Yes if I remember right
Or just we can paint the acrylic color on the clay ??
Yes you can paint on the clay once dry
Sounds like you might need a new brand of paint if you find all colours in the set are the same
Did you see my water colour on clay video:
ua-cam.com/video/IKSAEC-BKKE/v-deo.html
Hello! I'm done painting my clay with acrylic and yesterday, I used a pd glue (mod podge alternative) to seal it. Some paint come off while I'm sealing it. Right now I'm sealing it with acrylic matte but some parts of the paint still come off (paint chipping)
Any recommendations?
It sounds like it’s not drying fully before coming into contact with something, so is peeling, every layer needs to be completely dry before adding another. I’d also try a different varnish as a glue is not the best
Can you use underglaze to air dry clay?
Hi, I think underglaze is more often used for clay that will be fired in a kiln, so I wouldn't add it to air dry clay.
In this instance my 'underglaze' is acrylic paint and then i add varnish or lacquer once dried. Hope that helps.
Can use poster colour?
I don't tend to as it would wash away
Can I add water paints rather than acrylic paints??😣 I need to know
I made this video: AIR DRY CLAY - Can You Paint with Watercolor?
ua-cam.com/video/IKSAEC-BKKE/v-deo.html
can we apply mod podge on any type of paint on the clay? Will it smudge?
Acrylic paint works well and I do watercolour too, I made a video on water colour and air dry clay, other paints like poster, gauche and some pens may smudge, always do a test piece first ❤️
Can you use gouache tempera please ?
Hi, I have not used this but yes I would think it would work, if you try let me know how you get on, thanks
@@RedRockingBird I tried it and it worked well actually
@@inesup6048 That's brilliant, really glad

Hello can we use acrylic paint into clay like a power colour minx into the clay and make the clay colorful?
You can mix in yes but the clay tends to ‘swallow’ colour like this and it will be more pastel

So... ?
@@cathystaub4645 yes you can paint details with other colours and then varnish
@@RedRockingBird Yep... Thnku. I put some tiny little flowers on my dishes and plates and then I varnished them. And I found out that adding gel food coloring to color your clay, before you make the item, works wonders. And it shaves off so much time! Did I pick this up from you, I'm not even sure, but your tutorials are just wonderful.
@@cathystaub4645 wonderful to know thank you, your projects sound lovely ☺️
Do you apply the color directly to the air dry clay, or do you apply a layer of sealant or any other product?
@@RedRockingBird thank you! 💜
@@laura.m.pl. hope this helped, thinking I might do another video but about sealing air dry clay 💜
What is the name of the pen in no, 3
This was a marker pen like a sharpie, if you want to varnish them after it would be best to use an acrylic paint pen, as varnishes can reactivate the ink and ruin the piece. Some pens I can use mod podge to seal the ink and then varnish, I always do a small test piece before hand to make sure the project goes to plan. Thank you ❤️
can i coat my clay with a clear nail polish?
I have, it’s one of the methods I use in my ‘Glaze’ air dry clay video, longevity really depends on the brand/type as some people have experienced it going tacky after a few years. I love the gloss it gives pins etc ❤️
Can we use poster colour??????
I wouldn’t choose to, but as a kid I used to use up my poster paint and make it more robust by mixing in some white glue
