    After watching this, I let my air dry clay dry for 72 hours and coated it with Triple Thick. I'm having an issue with the Triple Thick coming up/off on some of my pieces. Any advice? What could be going wrong?

  • @JojosCraftyLove
    @JojosCraftyLove Рік тому +1

    I have a smaller variety of varnishes. The only one I've used and not have a good outcome is the triple thick as the last time I used it, it dried tacky so I haven't used it since. However, I may give that a go again when I get the chance to buy a small bottle!
    Have you tried the Mont Marte (Australian brand) Gloss Clay Varnish Signature? It is made specifically for polymer (apparently may dry tacky on polymer clay due to plasticiser in clay) and air hardening clay (Dried absolutely perfect with no tackiness in my experience). I think it may be polyurethane based. They also made the iridescent varnish with pretty glitter in it.... might look tacky (not feel) to some people but it is quite pretty! Mont Marte makes air dry clay too. Similar to Jovi but a tad more fibrous. I also have the Jo Sonja Polyurethane gloss varnish, Dura-Clear Matte and High Gloss finish. in my experience, they all dried perfectly fine on air dry clay... and the water droplets test. I will get back to you on that!
    Thank you for your educational videos as always! 🥰

    • @RedRockingBird
      @RedRockingBird  Рік тому +2

      Thank you JoJo. That’s not good that you found it went tacky, I wonder if the bottle needed a good shake or reacted with something, not sure. I really love it. A lot of this style of varnish are fairly similar so worth trying any we can get hold of. What I like about the triple thick is the small sizes they do them in so it’s really not expensive to try a few. I’ve not tried that brand no, sounds like you are a pro crafter 😁 happy crafting 😊❤️

What I’ve made is a little box to put jewelry and stuff like that in it, so it consists of a box and then the lid to the box. Do you know if I can varnish the whole lid and the whole box part, or if I shouldn’t varnish where the lid meets the box in case they somehow stick together or if it ruins the varnish? Basically what I mean is if the das varnish is sticky and if it’s ok to rub against another piece that is varnished? I’m really struggling 😖😖 so far I have only varnished the parts where the lid and the box don’t touch just in case it’s not a good idea 😫

      Depends on your varnish, I’d add a glass dish or similar inside to make sure as the stubs are likely to damage it, did you see my paint palettes video? Someone commented the one looked like an air dry clay ashtray! 😁

    What sealant do you recommend if you have used watercolour paint instead of acrylic paint to decorate? Tired modge podge on a test piece and like I thought as it's water based it smears the paint so needing options

      Hmmm, I tend to use mod podge and brush it on gently, then use something shinier over this:

    Hi, just wanted to ask if after a coat of acrylic paint and one of these varnish, does the the paint have any peeling? As in those the coats comes off of the clay? Also does the Triple Thick and the Matte Varnish leave any brushes marks at the end?

    • @RedRockingBird

      You can get some brush strokes and I have not experienced peeling with either of those, always let dry really well not touching anything against it and you should be good, thanks 😊

      They don’t seem to go as far as say a tin of varnish, the triple thick is thick 🤪 so doesn’t last so long as you end up putting more on, depends how big your projects are and if they are much better value for bigger bottles or if any are on offer ☺️❤️

Just curious, if you've tried either product, how did it do with the air dry clay? ~~Christy~~

      You could leave it for now and then coat once you have some more, even if that is a while away, just don’t put near any moisture or it would soak that up and go soft. Or if you have any mod podge you could give a coat of that and then at a later date still varnish over the top.
