  • In the wilderness, Lehi has a vision filled with symbolism that includes the tree of life. In his vision he struggles for some time in the dark before finally making his way to the tree. He eats or partakes of its fruit and desires his family to do likewise. He sees a rod of iron, a strait and narrow path, and the mists of darkness that enshroud men. Sariah, Nephi, and Sam eat the fruit, but Laman and Lemuel refuse.

Something that really hit me while watching this version was the way Laman and Lemuel reacted to the dream. I think we too often label those two as horrible people who Lehi and Sarah had to deal with, but the truth is far more complex and real than that. The truth is that they were real people who loved thier family, even though they thought they were crazy. The pain on Laman's face when he was told that he probably wasn't going to make it was very real. He felt far more redeamable in that moment. We should never give up on those that we feel are going astray, even if we feel that they are "past feeling".

Yeah, I've never viewed them as the villains in the beginning. I've always felt it wasn't until they planned to kill Nephi on this side of the world that the wickedness completely consumed them.

That's what impressed me about this video too. Honestly, if we were there and didn't go out of our way to receive a witness for ourselves that Lehi was right in what he was proclaiming, we'd probably react like Laman and Lemuel too.

It certainly helps develop empathy, yes. Ive always wondered why Lehi put up with these guys journeying with the family when they literally tried to _kill_ them several times. You know, most people would be like "Nuh-uh, get out. I don't care if you feel bad. Get out." It's things like this that help you understand why...how they kept giving them chance after chance.

When the vision finishes and Lehi sits in his tent, looking at Laman and Lemuel, then says with all the tender feelings of a loving parent, "Please", that is SO well done and touches the heart in a special way. A great lesson for parenting children through adulthood.

Did anyone else notice the difference in how those who were "clinging to the rod" and fell away versus those that " continually held fast" and stayed? Those that were clinging only held on with one hand and let go to grip farther, the others used both hands alternating and never let go. I've noticed this difference in the scriptures before and this is how pictures it. Amazing! I've always loved these chapters!

Hi TaylorT! I'm glad you pointed it that out!
Let me add to what you said....
      (In the video: 8:09 )
      So I checked, 1 Nephi 8...
In verse 24, it says, "clinging." This must be the group that you said that
held on to the rod with one hand. I would call them, "Clingers" from now on
so that I can differentiate them from other groups.
      :D
      (In the video: 9:49 )
      In verse 30, it says,
"hold fast," so these are the people who used both hands in holding on to
the iron rod. I would call them, "H. F."
I also would like to point out that before the HFs partake of the fruit...
They "fell down" as mentioned in verse 30. To me, it symbolized how
grateful they were and they immediate prayed to Heavenly Father for guiding
them. It looked like that they will never take their spiritual journey for granted. I hope I am one of the HFs. :)

@@mscred5909 Joseph Smith Sr. had a dream that contained a tree with delicious fruit, a path, and a large building where the wicked looked down in scorn of the righteous. This is further evidence that the Book of Mormon is a 19th-century work of Joseph Smith. It's ingrained in us to look deep into possible scriptural meaning. Take a step back from looking for little things like this in the text and instead consider if the Book of Mormon really is historical. These are not actual events and I'm more sure of that than I ever was sure when I said: "I know the Book of Mormon is true".

@@jared-rummler Thank you, Jared Rummler for your post. It is interesting that you mentioned Joseph Smith Sr. I invite you to contact the missionaries in your area (see www.comeuntochrist.org/) so they can bring/invite the Spirit of the Lord into your home. I know that the Spirit of the Lord can remind/teach/confirm the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon.... if you choose to allow that to happen.
If you are still reading this... thank you. Then let me tell you my testimony: You may or may not believe the following... and that's okay. You may stop reading if you feel that you do not want to hear my testimony. I may never know why.... so, I will have to understand. For anyone who is reading... thank you for taking the time. And here it is:
I have read the Book of Mormon and I still continue to read it because it is one of the ways to invite the Spirit of God or the Holy Ghost into my life. I know that through the power of the Holy Ghost we may know that this book is another testament of Jesus Christ. I know that the things that happened in the Book of Mormon.... did happen. It is an ancient record that was once in reformed Egyptian. I know that God called Joseph Smith to help translate it from reformed Egyptian into English. I write these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
Side Notes: In reference to "reformed Egyptian," that is in Mormon 9:32. I will admit, I had to look that up. I don't have that memorized. Thanks to Jared Rummler's post, I was lead to think about that today. :) You or for anyone else reading, you might enjoy this article:

Somehow in all my readings I had never imagined the vision's setting to be nighttime quite like this. But I loved it; it makes the tree and its fruit appear all the brighter and more precious. One of the most important visions or dreams ever given! It speaks of our day, not just Lehi's time. There are multiple levels and meanings to this dream and one of them is that we are at the time when the Great and Spacious Building is all over the earth and will soon fall. The time is short, as President Nelson has reminded us. Pay attention to this dream and repent and come unto Jesus Christ by taking on the covenants of baptism and then the Temple. @@00Fisher00 This is the same logic that Mormons use when it comes to the BoM verse saying that the BoM would be "translated" by Joseph, the son of Joseph. What a convenient "prophecy!" It's not a matter of convenience, and it's not a matter of proving the existence of God. Latter-day Saints take a witness from God as a basis for other conclusions, in fact; that's crucial to our beliefs. Did you know that his Father's vision was not written down and recorded until 15 years after the Book of Mormon was published and that it was dictated by his Mother soon after Joseph's murder and did not come directly from Joseph Smith Senior himself? Did you know that his Father's vision was given when Joseph was 5 years old? It would be impossible for anyone, including Joseph Smith Jr. to plagiarize something not yet written. It would be near impossible for a 5-year-old to remember that dream 18 years later. What wonderful symbolizm for those who are truly striving and willing to stay with God and let Him Prevail.
I also noticed that Lemuel frequently looked to Laman to make a decision as to where to go or what to do. I think this shows that siblings and those who we are close to in our lives can be a great influence, whether good or ill. I also know that had he chosen, Lemuel could have chosen to be strong like Sam. Perhaps being closer in age to Laman had a greater influence than he felt towards Sam or Nephi had.

But for real, this vision remains as poignant and meaningful today as the first time I read it. The pressure to compromise your morals is real... This was a great representation, in my opinion, of Lehi's vision of the Tree of Life! My heart hurt when I saw people, after partaking of the fruit, falling away! A great symbol for today! "I never said it would be easy. I only said it would be worth it!"

Also, his dream was a warning to his sons, moreso than a statement of fatalism. His dream was probably prompted by his concern over their constant murmuring in contrast to Nephi's unwavering support. The dream didn't seal their fate, but gave Lehi a way to illustrate and articulate the concerns Lehi and the Lord shared for Laman and Lemuel. It reflected where their hearts were at that moment in time, but was presented to them as a wake-up call to give them a chance to change course.

Lehi's vision--and Nephi's subsequent experience when an angel helped him understand the symbolism--are favorites of mine. When I heard the missionary discussions more than 40 years ago, I knew the church was true when the elder who was teaching me began to explain the Holy Ghost and his purpose. As I read the Book of Mormon for the first time, I was struck by the plain and simple truths revealed symbolically in these two visions and I am still grateful today for the perspective added by these two men of God. I am grateful for the brother who was courageous enough to invite me to his home and take the discussions. This act literally changed my life and I have never had any doubts since that time.

I had a friend who was called on a mission to New Jersey. He and his companion were delivering a free Bible, and the husband invited them in, when they asked to share a five minute discussion about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. The wife came down the stairs, and said, "No, no, boys we just wanted a Bible. We’re happy with our religion we don’t need to talk." After many minutes, the couple agreed to visit, but the five minutes turned into one hour, as they argued every scripture. Finally, my friend showed a picture of God the Father and Jesus Christ, appearing in a pillar of light, to 14 year old Joseph Smith, as he prayed in a grove of trees.
At that point, the mother said, "Now, hold it right there." And she turned to her husband and said, "You remember the dream I had while in a hotel in Rochester, NY. In the dream, I saw the earth covered with darkness, and I could make out mounds of people, lying on the ground, moaning and crying out. Then, in the distance I saw a grove of trees, and in those trees, I saw a light descend, and in that light I saw two personages." And turning to the missionaries, she said, "I need to be baptized in your church, and my children need to be baptized in your church," and turning to her husband, asked, "And won't you also be baptized in this church?"

I have heard other amazing stories of people who have had spiritual visions or dreams leading them to the gospel. One woman I knew had an angel come tell her in her dream to call the Mormons. She ended up joining the church and so did her whole family. Others have had other experiences that were similar that they were led to the church. I think it's very beautiful that if we truly are seeking, God will not leave us in the dark. He will call to us and show us the way.

When he was 19, DJ was making early morning cookie dough, alone, in the silence of the town mall. He had just broken up with his girlfriend, and asked himself the question, "Now what?" And the Spirit, spoke "Serve a mission." "Well, I better start going to church..."

I never made this connection before until I saw this video but consider this: the fall and mortality was brought about by eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. By obtaining the celestial kingdom we eat the fruit of the tree of life! It's definitely not a coincidence that we enter the mortal and immortal world both by eating fruit from a tree!

    • @robertopaulpickett4030

Correct observation. The 2 trees in the Garden of Eden represent a veil into and out of this world. We came into it by the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and we will exit only through the Tree of Life. The Bible spends a significant amount of time in the story of the Tree of Knowledge and the Book of Mormon spends a significant amount of time in the story of the Tree of Life. This is one of the many ways that the Book of Mormon serves as another witness of Jesus Christ.

I love how easily believable and relatable the videos are being made. What I found interesting about the dream is that no matter how much a father and mother can love their children, each one of us has our own agency, which is honored by our Heavenly Father, and will never be taken away. Laman and Lemuel used their agency to reject the fruit whereas Lehi, Sariah, Nephi, and Sam chose to accept it and hold onto it. Each one of us has to choose for ourselves if we will seek, partake of, and hold onto the most precious fruit. Agency and faith are powerful.

A few years ago, after a lifetime of inactivity, I got myself together to go to the temple. I had been the Gospel Doctrine teacher for five years, and learned what it meant to teach by the Spirit. I was full of joy. Then someone started poisoning the wolves I was rehabbing, my middle son died, then I had a house fire, my dad died, then I had a pulmonary embolism, then my oldest son died. I also got hit hard with Multiple Sclerosis which has dumped me in a power chair. No more karate, no more horses and riding, no more wolves , then came congestive heart failure and all the resultant fun. I let go of the rod. Bro Dennis Neuenschwander had walked up to me at conference before all of this happened and shook my hand, which felt like some sort of current shot through my body and said, looking me in the eyes, "You have many blessings coming." Then he walked back to the podium. I had never in my life shaken my fist skyward, and professed that I never would, but all that broke me and I let go of the rod that had brought me to the temple. I still had a testimony of the Savior even though I was mad at God. I figured God could take me being angry. He knows me best. So, I continued to bless my food, occasionally prayed, knew in my heart that the Gospel and Jesus Christ is the only way home. Finally I am coming around, reading my scriptures again, and praying sincerely. I was so thankful to see these videos and all the wonderful comments from my brothers and sisters.

I love how when Lehi was following Christ through the darkness, for whatever reason he lost sight of Him, distanced until he was alone. Like, in our lives we fall behind and stumble.
Then Lehi prays, and INSTANTLY the Lord shows the tree and the way to it, and Lehi wasn't that far away either.
I think there's truth for everyone; that we all can lose sight of Christ, but using our faculties and trying, we'll find that WE weren't ever that far off nor was He that far away. Just the smallest separations can seem massive with God.

Consider the state of those in the Terrestrial Kingdom, who, while not valiant in defending the Name of Christ, did not actively oppose the Work of the Lord. Perhaps those who were lost in the Mists of Darkness or drowned in the waters are those who do not go so far as to be crushed by the fall of the Great and Spacious Building.
And were there those who were lost to the mists that returned to the Rod of Iron and to the Tree of Life? I think it is likely some lost in the Mists made their way back to the Rod of Iron and partook of the Fruit again, though we do not hear of it in the account we now have.

I'd agree, I remember if it was the chapter where Nephi received the explanation on the vision that the "waters" we're the depths of hell, those lost there had wandered "to far" sort of thing.
The mists represent the temptations and lies, tricks of the devil and his work; you can always escape and come back from that with repentance. Wasn't entering the building being "overcome by the world"?
Visions are very vague, meant for the Seer(of the vision), interpreted by us with the Spirit's aid. I love your opinion, no idea how to really answer. I'll just say what I remember learning.

Honestly? Lehi probably just didn't see it happen. (shrug)

Who wants to be lost and alone? Who wants to feel unloved? The point of the gospel is that we all can feel loved. We all can be happy no matter what challenges come our way. Sometimes all of us get lost in the midsts of darkness. But the way back to feeling safe and home in heart is so simple that most of the time we won't do what it takes to feel and accept Gods goodness. I am always humbled when I read the scriptures again and talk to Heavenly Father about my life and the things that are sometimes impossibly hard. He will always listen. He does love and care about you. The distance is always you. Are you walking away or walking to him. Everyday I ask myself that.

You are never only hurting your self when you choose wrong. You will always hurt others. Whether you know it or not. "You are either for Him or against Him"
      Love +goodness= from God
      Hate+sin=from Satan
Breaking the comandments causes the most emotional heartache and pain for you and others.

@@goodahead This is true. But there are those who are not so much fighting the work of the Lord as simply not committing to furthering it. They were good people, but perhaps decided the Gospel "wasn't for them" and decided they wouldn't care whether the Lord's work succeeded or not.
These people cannot be saved in the Celestial Kingdom because that is a Kingdom of Care. It is a Kingdom built on service and love. By not committing to serve the Lord, a person hurts themselves and Christ yet does no eternal harm to another person's soul (though they may bring about temporary great sorrow and pain).
