Give GM credit, they hit a home run with this one. Canyon without question.
Chevy looks way cleaner under the hood. I appreciate that.
Canyon wins the engine.
Canyon wins the grille.
Canyon absolutely wins the interior, it’s functional, well thought out and has a killer customizable gauge cluster!
GM midsize trucks are the new class leader in my mind, especially with options like the trail boss, ZR2 and luxury AT4
I'll take the Canyon all day
Agree, in the past , Tacoma could be considered more reliable , because of the use of older , more proven technology, overbuilt drivetrains, great build quality . I knew 4th gen won't be good based on Tundra that is literally falling apart, from rattling interior , broken plastics after few months of use ,to failing engines. With the new gen , i don't even know why would anyone buy the more expensive Taco. It doesn't make sense for short term, because you can get more features/comfort from other brands, like GMC, but it also doesn't make sense for long term , because this engine won't last 300~400K miles as previous gen could. If I was buying now, i would get 4runner or 3rd gen Tacoma
@nikotal.4282 the new Tacoma uses the same engine from the highlander and that has proven to be very reliable. I follow the tundra crowd. You're adding every single problem the owner has into one where every owner has. Don't exaggerate
@@nikotal.4282 Not entirely sure where you're getting your information on the Tundra. They had a few early issues with turbos that were resolved when they switched suppliers. The earliest models also have interior issues. But it's far from a truck that is "plagued with issues" or "falling apart."
I love GM styling and feel like they usually knock it out of the park. But I also grew up a GM guy and now I drive Toyota...for a reason.
Not the same engine as highlander, Taco has truck specific engine.@@MrMikeDao
GMC for the win in my book. It's a better value (initially) looks better, more powerful amd I'd be willing to bet their reliability isn't going to be as good with this generation of Tacoma. I also like how the screen in the Canyon looks like its more integrated and the Tacoma looks like they glued an ipad to the dash.
My local dealer is offering a lifetime power train warranty with the new canyons. That and $6k lower in price made the decision pretty easy. That doesn’t even take into account the much better interior with far better materials with the canyon. The taco is all plastic with a very uncomfortable arm rest on the door sill…
GMC for me
Am a Toyota fan but i think GM's "twins" are kicking the Taco's behind!.
For real
Can you get a 6 foot bed in the GM?
@@beexiong2995nop
Taco will be on the road still 29 years from now
People who buy a new vehicle to keep it 30years is like .001%.
I’d bet less than 10% keep it more than 10 years.
I am a Toyota guy but the Canyon has a much nicer interior and it is built in America.
Nice to see someone who gives a damn whose workers are putting these things together. Best of luck to you brother.
@@thewireman134
Where is the canyon put together?
Exactly why you shouldn’t buy it. It’s built in America. Doesn’t carry the same weight anymore. There’s a reason why American made vehicles rank worse according to consumer reports.
@@mdaddy336
Most “foreign” cars are as American as the big 3
When has built in America been a good thing? Ik the taco is Mexico but if we are talking build quality, it’s Japan.
GM better from the front, Tacoma better in the rear. Personally I have the 23 Denali and ZERO issues in a year, I think it looks better inside as well.
I almost bought a Canyon AT4, I specced it, ordered it through a dealer, waited months for it to come in. I saw it come in on the website, called they assured me that wasn't mine, come to find out the order number was the same. They sold it from under me during labor day. They couldn't find a replacement so I went to Toyota and found a 23' Limited Tundra for the same price as the Canyon AT4 . Nabbed the Tundra instead.
I did not know that dealers could do that, that's terrible. You may have ended up with a better truck though
If the GMC twins can prove they are reliable this new generation, they should be the class leader. Looks better IMO and priced better as well.
19k miles on my 23 AT4 canyon and not a single issue. Ive lifted it on 285/75r17s, off-road it and drive it like I stole it lol so far so good knock on wood! The gas mileage isn't really any better than a full size truck though is my only bad thing to say, but the lift and tires were big reasons for that
@@ArconicWelding No new car should have issues at 19k miles lol come back after 80k
@@BID4882 In todays world its not uncommon to have problems under 50k with all the tech and emissions forced into vehicles. Tundras had them too, just like every manufacturer does. Won't have it long enough to hit 80k either I'll just buy another in cash like I did this one when warranty is up.
Fun facts: they have been more reliable than the Tacoma since 2016 according to repairpal. Tacoma also has more than double the recalls according to the NHTSA
I took delivery of my '24 Canyon AT4 two weeks ago...traded in my '17 Z71 Colorado...after getting over my buyer's remorse I LOVE THIS TRUCK!!! The looks, the ride, all worth the wait, as I'd ordered it in July...
NICE DUDE. 23 Canyon Denali owner here. More comparisons between these two please!
i test drove a canyon AT4 a few weeks ago and it definitely gave a nicer ride than i thought it would and it msrp for 47900 i have a 21 ram larmire now and the full trucks with the opitions i want are crazy priced
That canyon looks so bold! Love it! 😍
Great video, thanks you for the demonstration.
Canyon for the win.......... any day every day
I took my deposit back at Karl Malone for a new Tacoma after drive the new GMC Canyon! I'm in love with my new GMC Canyon!
I have a 2020 Canyon SLT and I love it. It is a 3.6 6 cyl. But, if i were to buy a new truck, I'd buy another Canyon.
Today there is no better mid-sized truck than the Canyon. It's just beautiful.
That Canyon is absolutely beautiful 😍
That ledge on the window sill for the Tacoma is fantastic. I have it in my Tundra. It's really a feature I like the best. The GMC doesn't have that. Nor do many other vehicles.
Ben, great video as usual. Exactly the type of comparisons that I would like to see. As always, thanks for giving payload specs. Speaking of payload, I find the Tacoma’s payload underwhelming. I am not the least bit brand loyal. However, I value reliability. Never been impressed with the GM midsize twins when it comes to reliability. I have purchased Honda, Mazda, Kia, Subaru, and Toyota vehicles brand new. Never owned a contemporary pickup. I want a pickup to tow our small camper. We haul camping gear as well, so payload is important. I am impressed with both trucks inside and out. I appreciate the option of a 6’ bed with the Tacoma. However, I have to admit that I am completely impressed with the form and function of the Canyon. I would probably spec a 4WD Canyon Elevation rather than the AT4 to save some money. Yes, I am very price conscious as well. I can’t believe I am typing this, but I prefer the Canyon with the exception of no 6’ bed. And, is it reliable? Very important question for me.
I've owned Tacoma's for almost 20 years and I traded my recent one (13 years with no issues) for a GMC Canyon AT4, wish me luck - I do love it new, great design and interior.
Tacoma for me, I prefer the exterior styling and the interior styling as well. Plus you have features like the powered tailgate , auto running boards, AVS, and the hybrid engine as an option, another huge plus for me or nitpick on the GMC is that for that price they still give halogens in the rear which just cheapen the look of the truck imo. It’s something a lot of people don’t care about but it bothers me. The Taco gives you full LED’s even on the base trim
Canyon hands down. I don't know why every reviewer says they don't like not having a physical button/knob for the lights.. "seems more like a reviewer talking point, than a well thought out opinion" Every car I have owned in the past 15 years has auto lights with a button/knob that I have never touched. Set it and forget it..
I bought a new Tacoma TRD Off-road premium in 2022 and hated the brakes. I could not stop smoothly, the rear brakes always grabbed suddenly. I just bought a new 2024 AT4X and love it.
Having just picked up an AT4X Canyon - the infotainment is super nice and the screens look like they were designed to fit (and are super fast). I have some strange creaking and rattle when above 60KM - it might just be the door seals needing to be older than 200km. The Canyon is super nice. I had a 2021 Tacoma Nightshade, but it was plagued with COVID manufacturing bugs; the Tacoma seat was more comfortable though.
The GMC Canyon is the best midsized. truck, and its not even close!
Was waiting on the Canyon 2024 and i think ill buy the canyon - its betting looking ! Better engine- better interior - afraid Toyota might have fit and finish issues
I like the Cayon ATX4, I think they look great, nice exterior and nice interior, but I just couldnt stomach the very lack luster MPG. So just going to keep driving my full size truck which gets the basic same MPG
John at LHT Performance bought a new 2020 Colorado, removed the V6, installed a V8 and 6-speed automatic transmission from a 2020 Silverado, and now gets 28-30 MPG on the highway.
I don’t plan on getting a new vehicle until 2025 but I’m in love with the appearance of the canyon 2023/24 versions and hopefully used ones will be cheaper come a year or so from now.
Great. Video I really like all the new midsize trucks, but ultimately decided on the Colorado ZR2. It’s a great looking truck with amazing value.
Have a 2024 Canyon on order. Hope it shows by the end of the year.
The bumper step is an option on the Tacoma. Also, does the Tacoma have power folding side mirrors? Thanks.
I have owned a 2023 Canyon since march of 23 and love it. 10k miles with no issues whatsoever.
Warranty hasn't run out yet. That's when your fun will start.
10k 😂 you’ve barely driven it! Give it another 70k or so that’s when you’ll probably start getting problems
@garrettgrowls I will probably trade mine in for a newer Canyon in 3 years if I am not satisfied with my 2023. But if this truck continues to be defect free in the next 3 years then I will keep driving it untill I get bored with it.
@@johnwhitneykokalis9990 I respect it! I bought a 2020 tacoma new and I’m still on stock tires and break pads 98k miles later lol it’s a wonderfully engineered machine with routine maintenance
@garrettgrowls I really like that these newer midsized trucks have really nice technology updates that are easy to use and enhance security and convenience of operation.
Trying to order canyon Denali. It seems like it’s hard to get . Why ? Still production problems?
Traded my 23 Tacoma sr5 after several engine problems. I’m happy with my 23 Canyon.
I bought a 23 Colorado Trail Boss as a bridge truck to a new Tacoma off road. I just don't like what I see so I told dealer to move my deposit on the Tacoma to a Land Cruiser as the Colorado seems like a superior truck for my needs.
I was leaning towards getting a Toyota but the GMC canyon has really caught me by surprise I may go for that idk yet.
I do like the luxury of the GMC and the ride quality as well BUT I have a deposit on a Tacoma TRD Off-road because Toyota makes better products. My parents have had two Colorados and over time to many issues came up with each truck. So trust of product overrides presentation.
I appreciate the video - though, comparing the GMC and Toyota outside the GMC dealership with a shout-out to them is a bit conflicted haha. But overall, good comparisons. Thanks.
just bought a 2023 for my wife, but I got the 2023 canyon for myself, she likes her truck and called it a female truck, my canyon is for me the clear winner; it cost $500.00 more.out the door.
I like the Canyon in this one
Canyon for me too also the engine bay of the tacoma looks like a teenager room
I like seeing a comparison between these two trucks, but it’s hard to really compare the two trims because they are different. The limited is the top trim (right now) and is focused on comfort and road driving. The AT4 is more light off roading and is the middle trim and $1000 less…than the top trim of the taco. I know it’s hard to get the correct trims to compare fairly right now, just wanted to point that out to people lol. If you want to make it a fair comparison, it would be the canyon Denali vs the limited Tacoma. The Denali is about $5-6,000 more than the limited is.
Got the 23 entry canyon elevation. So far really unbeatable mid size trucks RN. IMO. Been ripping new butt holes on people wanting to see what she got especially up hills. Great “TORQUE MONSTER” A lot of haters on this truck especially dodge N Toyota truck owners💯😂😂😂
I have a 2017 Canyon with 2.8 diesel and not up to either of these. I get 32-24 mpg
Trail Boss for me. These new Tacos are an imitation of themselves.
Chevy looks good but as you said... in the long run which will last longer and be more reliable...Lets say they would just each have absolutely equal reliability then Canyon.. but i dont know if they do..
I have a canyon on order - the Taco was impossible to even see and of the 2 stealers I spoke to both said dealer adjustments were likely (no thank you) because it was a "hot model" with lots of demand.. I love Taco reliability - had a 2014 BUT - they usually mess up the 1st model year - they did in the Gen 3 at least. Would like to wait a year and see how Toyota shakes out without the V6. The Canyon engine / drive train has been out 5years so bugs are known. Electrical gremlins exist in the GMC and some of them have weird issues - however - mostly known. The Taco is all new to everyone. My local Toyota dealer is am hour away, GMC is 20 mins. Likely the AT4 Canyon is where I'll land
I love toyota but they are out of their mind with these prices.
I feel like comparing the canyon Denali and the Tacoma limited would a little better just because they are more similar in Luxury
I drive Fords but the Canyon seems like a very nice truck. To me, the dash camera seems a bit more integrated.
Is the Tacoma noticeably louder than the Canyon? More engine noise?
Toyota wins on projected resale and reliability. GMC wins everywhere else.
NGL, Toyota got a bloody nose in that comparison. If you minus out trust and resale value ( both really unknown), the Canyon owns that Taco. Too bad GM eliminated the 6' bed option.
And the V6
As for the configuration, this has to be what the numbers say sellls
I'd love to see the iforce max Tacoma vs the canyon and see which engine is better. I also have to say the limited model of tacoma looks by far the worst of all the models. Trd pro>TH>sport>off road>prerunner>sr5>limited in order of looks imo. You'd have to redo this comparison with something that is actually similar to this trim of canyon.
Everyone always compares the luxury models. Compare the one right above base model lol
I think the Limited is the only Tacoma that DOES have the AUTO 4x4. All of the Canyons have it. Maybe not in that preproduction truck? I know because it's the only reason I would consider the limited (don't like all the chrome).
Not a GM fan but that Canyon is sick.
I'll take the Tacoma anytime. Superior resale and reliability.
The reliability was when it had a V6, not sure about that now that it has a turbo 4.
The Canyon engine sound is better and nicer interior
Hey Ben are they producing the 2024 GMC Canyon? I just did an online search nation wide and all GMC Canyons I found are pre owned or used, no 2024? When will GMC start the 2024 product roll out on the Canyon? I definitely prefer to wait for the Canyon it looks way more cohesive and even more rugged than the cramped and uncomfortable riding Tacoma. Excellent review! 👍
He said this one is for sale
Personally, I’ve never seen a canyon on a dealer lot
You’re exactly right, they are like ghosts. I’m interested in a 24 Canyon but like a unicorn they are non existent.
@@daveintbdaveintb3624
They are a mythical beast that all you see are occasional pictures
I’d love to go to a lot, see one, sit in it and drive it
I have a 2024 on order. I understand the order was accepted by the factory, but no build date yet. I'm willing to bet the Canyon in this video is a 2023.
GMC beautiful nice I’ll stick to reliability I don’t want to spend my time at the dealership give it a few months I see issues along the way 🤙🏾
Really good comparison between the Canyon and Toyota, thanks. I ordered a 2024 Canyon Denali a month ago from my local dealer and was told it would be a few months before the factory would deliver the truck to the dealership. I can not find one at any dealership in California? They show 2023 Canyons advertised as new? Is GM trying to sell off old stock before ordering New 2024 Canyons? Thanks
At least around here, you can’t walk onto a lot and find a canyon sitting there
I'd buy neither of these overpiced vehicles.
I'm gonna stick with my new Colorado Trail Boss until it craps out (could be tomorrow, but solid so far) and then I'll probably aim for a Taco with the iForce-Max powertrain for better efficiency. If GM releases a hybrid Colorado/Canyon, I'd be inclined to stick with GM, honestly. Nice truck so far! The 4-pinger is super-torquey and proper quick for a truck!
How difficult would it be to get an extra 4 inches of leg room in the back seat
The Canyon has a better looking interior. I feel like the only thing going for the Toyota is that people know they are reliable. Hopefully they continue to be reliable.
I have a 2007 Camry Hybrid with 287k miles. No issues until recently with AC compressor and front end vibration. It’s never needed any major repairs and has cost me fuel, tires, brakes, a tie rod, couple windshields, new exhaust being it was in Ohio salt roads for 11 years. I bought it with 64k in 2010 or 11.
2011 Highlander has over 270k miles. Cost me tires, brakes, fuel, a new horn recently. No Chevy, Ford, Dodge ever lasted me that long or have been that maintenance free. GMC is nice but the Toyotas have been my go to. My next truck needs to be 0 to minimal maintenance for 15-20 years. The Canyon is a sharp truck and I like it though. No disrespect to the GMC folks.
Exterior - Canyon / Interior - Tacoma / Powertrain - Canyon
loved the last tacoma. i think they went backwards as far as styling with this one.
AT4 for me.
if its anyhing like malibu got new run from chev!
I would like to see the ATX4 compared to the TRD Pro Tacoma. I think I like the GMC more but I am yet to see the Tacoma in the flesh. Dealers around here are saying May or June. Crazy.
I'll take the General
Canyon wins in all areas, exterior, power, interior, price and dare I say reliability ( Toyota not where they were with previous generation).
Nissan Frontier V6
Said no one...ever
Does the canyon have more comfortable front seats?
beats the Toyota but I found the Ranger head and shoulders above the rest.
Just wondering does canyon have adaptive cruise control? I love Toyota, but canyon has a nicer look overall. I’d vote canyon.
This comparison really isn't even close. That canyon blows the tacoma out of the water... while being more affordable and built in the US.
For me, It all comes down to reliability and resale value.
All depends what are you looking for. Today GMC, in 15 years Tacoma will still drive an go. GMC value will be depreciated faster
I dont understand what’s cool about new trucks putting the light toggles inside of the touchscreen it js doesn’t seem to click
It doesn't make sense. The mid-size trucks don't seem to get any better gas mileage than the full-size trucks.
That’s what k was going to say
They got,rod of the V6, and lost gas mileage
They're both around 4500 lb and aero similar to a giant brick - that's why.
I heard people say that modern mid-sized trucks are the same size as old full-sized trucks. The 1980s Chev full-sized "square body" weight was around 4000 lbs. Every year car manufacturers make the mid-sized trucks wider and taller and now they are putting a smaller engine in them and the trucks are too heavy for the turbocharged 4-cylinder. In Australia they get a Ford Ranger with a 6-cylinder diesel engine that gets 28 MPG. John at LHT Performance put the V8 and 6-speed automatic transmission from a 2020 Silverado into a 2020 Colorado and gets 28-30 MPG on the highway. ua-cam.com/users/shortsltQhLyngeAM?si=e3gm0Ke33TsoGJEl
Give me the Canyon!
Canyon for me looks better has bigger engine an all the same luxury .
Aesthetics only I prefer with the Csnyon. But I DESPISE the amber marker lights GMC puts on their fender flairs. You take an otherwise elegant design and break it up with a cheap/gaudy looking piece of plastic.
If I’m leasing, I go Canyon if I’m buying, I go Tacoma.
I thought I would trade my 23 Tacoma for the new one but without a drastic fuel mileage increase I see no reason to pay more with no real advantage for me
The GMC AT4 will give you more options for less money and a hundred pounds more torque and a more comfortable ride. The interior in my opinion is a step up from the tacoma.
The engine in the GMC is proven, it has been used for years in the silverado. There both good trucks. Personally it's GMC for me
Canyon puts the Tacoma to shame. I also own that exact canyon AT4
I would LOVE to buy the GMC Canyon Denali but I use a truck like a truck and I would just get that pretty interior dirty.
Just for the reliability I would take the Tacoma.
It's a new generation. We don't know how reliable it is.
Toyota living on past reputation
BIG failed not showing the tailgate storage of the AT4. Also, Limited is a Denali equivalent...not an AT4.
I had a 17 Tacoma Off Road after driven 127k miles, drive side of the engine started knocking so i traded with another 22 Tacoma Sr5 and only under 30k miles i noticed the engine knocking, consist vibrations. Toyota not so reliable as its used to be in my experience so now i drive 23 Canyon ATV so far only got 7k miles on it with no issue at least not Yet
Im a toyota over GM. But they picked the worst submodel of the new tacoma to asked which one looks better. Lol the limited is not as nice as the TRD or even the sr5 front end. The limited looks eehhh compared to the other submodels of the new tacoma. That being said, the GMC canyon wins big time on looks here.
In any other year I'd take the Tacoma. Not in 2024. The Canyon would be my choice with Toyota being in year one of the new gen. GMs 2.7 turbo has been around a little longer also.
Forgot to mention I just saw the TFL video of the GM trail boss pulling the blown up Toyota off the trail. Front diff or something just broke. Looks like Toyota might have dropped the ball on this truck.
@4:18 you had the seat all the way back!!!!!!! Stop it!!What a hater!!!!
Would love to buy a truck, but these prices are ridiculous. Probably will never buy one and stick to beaters. Wish they would stop adding unnecessary tech making them so expensive.
