One feature that separates the GM twins and is rarely talked about in depth is that the GM trucks have the full time 4WD setting. For many people who experience mixed snow/ice/wet pavement on road driving conditions , the auto 4x4 setting can be a valuable asset on a daily driver.

I've gone to the dealer and looked at most of these. I came so close to pulling the trigger on the Canyon, but I have so many reservations about GM quality lately. I found out the reason I couldn't find any Canyons on the lot was because GM had put a stop on all of them recently to fix more software issues. For 50k+, there shouldn't be so many reports of transmission and software issues all over the place. There are incentives everywhere I look on full size trucks, to the extent that you can find a similarly equipped one for less than mid-size! But, having owned a 2019 Silverado before, full size is simply too much truck for my uses. Too big and too bulky for me. I guess I'll just keep my current vehicle for the time being and wait to see if prices come down and reliability issues stop being such an issue.

What brand, model year, engine and grade do you recommend? I would like to have some of the newer active safety features such as the automatic emergency braking system to avoid front collisions, but not as critical as long-term reliability and durability. Any suggestions for a late model pickup truck with Direct and Port Injection. Also, what immediate and affordable engine and transmission mods for reliability and durability do you recommend to protect the powertrain? I’m not looking for more power, just long-term reliability and durability as I don’t have too much money and need a truck for work and personal use. Thank you!

I like the slick bed of the taco. Ultra gritty rhino lining is a pain in the as* to slide things across. I can always strap items down. But most of the time I’m sliding items in and out. With no line X gritty texture, I don’t have to climb into the bed and lift things out most of the time.

With everything considered, I'd say the best all-around mid-size is the Canyon AT4. Great base options and even better equipped well. The Taco is the best choice for the single guy who wants a lifestyle truck to go off-roading and the aftermarket will have endless bolt-ons made for it. The Colorado ZR2 is easily the best value in off-road factory machine. All the Ranger has is big payload, wide bed and a comfortable backseat....If I wanted all that, I'd buy an F-150. It even has the plain, work truck look. Sadly, it does nothing to push me from a full-size like the others do.

Chevy was a good value as well. Toyota really adds options in large chunks making it easily the most expensive for a comparable truck. The GMC is a more expensive option to start with leaving no room to work.

I've bought the "reliable" choices before based on Consumer Reports and fan boy claims. But they still broke and weren't very enjoyable vehicles. The colorado base engine, its worth noting, they dont just detune it. They use weaker internals. A chevy engineer discussed it in regards to rhe tuning, the base 2.7 could theoretically but flashed to the higher power levels, but it wouldnt be especially safe or reliable. The now discontinued mid level engine was flashable because it had the same internals as the HO version and was arguably detuned (although chevy would say thats standard and the HO is just more aggressively tuned).
