Hi! Thanks for the message and thoughts! Now, I haven’t seen him do anything yet but swim, plus he’s self coached all these years and being 19, I know he doesn’t do any strength work either! So many gains to be made you’re right! Hip extension will be a focus for sure out of the pool plus if you saw at the end of the video I have him doing daily mobility for his lack of range in YTW position also. Let’s see how he gets on… maybe a follow up video down the line soon!!
Thanks. Just came across your video. There are a couple of things we see very often. One thing, however, really surprises to me: he is a very good runner - but he has obvious issues with hip extension in swimming? Maybe you also want to check his running form - in particular when he's tired. It might turn out that more intervention is necessary (gym work: e.g. dead lifts, kettlebell swings, hip thrusts etc, running: more sprint work).
Given this swimmer's poor technique, I'm skeptical that, even at 19 y/o, he can maintain 1:31/100 meters over 400 meters. I would have liked to see him swimming in real time to better assess his ability.
Hey thanks for the comment, I was actually quite taken back with his technique as it was the first time I ever saw him swim having just started coaching with me that weekend. He did his own 400m TT a couple weeks back and that was the time he set. He actually also was seeing a full time swim coach, pool based coach, and never had seen himself swim before! unreal. It's like he has two different strokes happening - we have to be conscious ( I think) to not try do everything at once, I follow the Swimsmooth approach and has worked for the last 12 years well.
