Totally agree with u my friend.
I’m from Dubai and always ride with full gear. It means I only ride when the weather permits it as I refuse to ride without full gear when it’s hot. Rather not ride then.

According to statistics in America, the most frequent fractures motorcyclists have in an accident are legs, hands and wrists (not arms) and heads. In the article they were saying, that people think that back armor is very important, but in reality, the injuries to the spine are usually of such nature (mainly compression injuries), that the current design of back protectors provide very little. They were saying that often neglected things like the neck/collar bone braces are significantly more useful than traditional things like back and chest protectors. And to have proper boots, gloves and helmet is what everyone should start with. I have no idea if this is true. Just sharing info, that I read, sounded logically written and was backed up with some statistics.

After 40+ years of riding, four years ago I walked away from a motorcycle accident. I had only a couple small bruises but the bike was completely destroyed. I was dressed for the slide, which I did for about 50+ meters, not the ride. Jacket, pants, helmet, gloves and boots had to be replaced at a cost that was less than an ambulance ride and visit to the emergency room. My insurance would have covered most of the medical expenses but none of the pain! Proper gear suddenly became very inexpensive.

    Great advice again sir.
I must admit I have been very lucky when it comes to crashing, especially on the road so never tested the gear I have bought, but off road that is a different story, problem being it was many years ago in the 1980s and good protective gear did not really exist so it was boots, helmet and jeans with a jumper of some sort.
Then along came MX pants and jerseys but still no body armour, but it was a lot cooler to ride in so less fatigue so less crashes, later when proper body armour and knee braces were more common that was invested in but by then the damage had been done, knees and shoulders were not so good by then.
Road gear has improved so much over the last 40 years with the advent of textiles, and dare I say mainly thanks to the adventure market, light protective waterproof gear that breathes is a world away from what was around 25 years ago and 40 years ago it was a case of being cold and wet was just the norm or being very hot when it warmed up.
It took me a long time but eventually found the money to buy good gear, KLIM, but my god it was worth it, chalk and cheese, comfort is the big difference, less fatigue so less mistakes, you stay drier and warmer when needed and cooler when needed without having to stop so much to either add or subtract layers or liners.

Excelent video. Always shall remember your statement: total safety is an illusion. It really is, as it will depend also of how other drivers behave. And, unfortunately,we all commit mistakes, so do other drivers. Not to mention other aspects such as oil and holes, animals crossing etc..... It demands a lot of discipline to use full gear in hot countries, with very hot weather all year long, even with airflow equipment. But it is crucial. Many thanks from Brazil Pavlin. Cheers

I started with idea "I can manage with cheaper items". Like for example insted of motorcycle gloves I had gloves for construction workers. I had a cheap LIDL helmet etc. After less then a year I bought everything: New helmet, new jacket new gloves... Now the cheap items are on shelf collecting dust because it just don't work. So actually I burned money on it with no use :D. I hope other new riders will learn from this video better :-)

Yes "expensive" clothes are better, both yes and maybe no Bought a set of KLIM Badland 4 seasons ago, all waterproof pockets are now leaky, the velcro around the wrists are broken. (replaced with buttons) However, the shell is intact, and critical zippers are like new, so buying quality is not stupid stuff. I'm critical of the above defects at that price point, would not be velcro at the sleeves only, better zippers.
Otherwise, the clothes work as intended, so I give you half a point.

The only riding gear I usually go with is gloves with sliders motorcycle boots the long type and spend the most on a helmet yes road rash is a problem but it can be fixed by wearing a mesh motorcycle jacket I wear komine jacket and good pair of motorcycle pants
Depending on what motorcycle you might need more extreme gear like a full race suit for haya or ninja riders or just any motorcycle going over 100 mph
My XR250 hits 70 mph something so I don't need too much plus I don't ride fast in the city

ATGATT - all the gear all the time, period.
I just would like to point out that even the most expensive gear will not be able to protect you in every accident - meaning if you happen to hit something at high speed it will kill or seriously injure you. Just mentioning it since unfortunately I have seen many beginners on group rides who don't understand the basics - and get involved in a major crash with very serious consequences, sometimes even fatal.

Only thing missing in your great presentation is use high visability quality riding gear. Let the world know where you are with color and it becomes a safer road to ride. When you fall off the bike, people will be able to see you on the road, on the shoulder or will find you down the hill. Avoid black and earth tones, those are for after riding colors. Stay safe.

Another awesome right to the point video I always struggle with the budget for the motorcycle. How much do I spend on maintenance how much do I spend on safety how much do I spend on traveling and traveling gear. My budget is limited and there's let's say other people involved in my budget meeting's. that don't understand anything about bikes but have to have a say. I honestly would really like to spend just one year budget on riding gear and I'm pretty sure that it would last me a long time. Thanks for a great video.

I think these days, at least in Europe, it's a bit easier to get gear that protects properly, because of the mandated safety rules where each manufacturer needs to test and write the level the gear was succesfully tested for. For my needs, an AA rated gear is good enough (touring) and incidently I also use revit :)

Unfortunately, I still see too many people on highway on motorbikes wearing t-shirts, bermudas and flip-flops...and the worse are the ones carrying children with them, and they are dressed like the silly driver. They will learn the hard way. I always wear full gear and it saved my head and spine. And my daughter as well: full gear when she comes with me. Since last year, I wear an airbag, it gives more protection but it keeps you very warm in summer and you need to carry extra t-shirt with you. I am still asking myself if I shouldn't wear it for my next long trip and use the "conventional " protection for everyday ride. Because, on long trips, you don't always have an electrical plug to charge the airbag...

Great video. Thanks. (I feel I am getting old...I got myself a very expensive jacket with a fancy, separate rain liner. Forget to take it with me - got in a thunderstorm. And yes, the jacket on its own does not protect against rain one bit. Got soaking wet, luckily close to home. Will never the damn thing home again...). IMO, correctly fitting gear is just as important and also increases safety a good bit. On another occasion, I had to put the liner on. It is meant to be zipped and clipped into the jacket. Really was not keen on taking off my upper half, so I simply pulled it over the whole shebang. Don't know though how often I can do this. IMO, this is clearly German over-engineering (jacket made by Reusch) I miss my old jacket...just a thermo liner and not clips in two different colors).

  • @stigthe5531

One little thing. More expensive gear tends to come with better protectors and it's more grind resistant.. So 70 USD jacket wont protect you as much as fancy 500 USD revit. Also never forget to buy a propper spine protector.

At stop lights when the average Harley rider pulls up alongside we get comments of ‘ why are you wearing a helmet, boots , jacket - it’s all about freedom man !’ Yes I own a VStrom and a Softtail HD, so I am not anti HD. In fact I get far more ‘looks’ on the HD wearing gear than on the 1050. It is common to see someone on a big VTwin on the freeway in the fast lane doing 80, wearing a T-shirt, shorts and unbelievably flop flops. That’s Florida for you
