DOT doesn't "approve" helmets prior to them being sold. It's a standard that manufacturers promise the helmets meet. Sadly many helmets are randomly tested and fail DOT standards after they're sold.
On the other hand the much higher standard of the ECE requires manufacturers to submit random samples of helmets for testing prior to receiving the approval and is done prior to new models being offered for sale.

The helmet saved my life a few times. One fall (a car stopped and then started forward when I had the right of way) I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt (and the helmet). I left so much skin on the asphalt, the scars are still visible. When I saw the car starting to move I hit the breaks, so this was low speed, probably 20 or 30 km/h by the time I hit the ground. Another time, almost at stand still, my bike slid on a wet rock and it fell. I landed on my knee with my not insignificant weight and the bike on top. If I wasn't wearing padded pants, it would have been good bye, knee.
My point? Don't go for the most expensive items, but get full gear and wear it all the time.

I'm also 6'6" so buying something off the rack is unlikely. What I've done until I can get something sorted (likely custom) is pick up some Carhartt stuff and wax the crap out of it with about 4 coats of sno-seal. I haven't tested it yet but I've read a bit on waxed cotton on forum threads and they say it works. Its also water and wind resistant. Plus, Carhartt pants fit relaxed enough to add some padded shorts, knee and shin guards if you want to go that route.

Right now, 2022, in some countries from Europe (like the one I live at) when you wanna get your motorbike license, and you go to a driving school and do your very first practice... You HAVE to wear Helmet, Jacket, Protection pants and boots. They do not let you take a single practice without the full gear I mention. That's now being done in every single place I know in my country, like by law. If the driving schools don't make you wear it they can get a huge fine. So imagine my face when I see videos of people in other countries riding without even a helmet. It blows my mind really. The quicker we get used to wear gear, and to see people wearing gear every single day on the streets, the better IMHO. Ride safe guys.

Hey Yammie, you've done some deep dive videos on helmets, but there is one aspect I haven't seen you cover. Determining the shape of your neck bean. I think its too subjective to have someone look at your head and say yeah, it looks like a cantaloupe or no it looks more like a rugby ball. Is there a more accurate method? My husband has always struggled getting a helmet he feels fits well. So this year while he was agonizing (and I'm not being dramatic here) over which helmet to buy. So, I employed a very self proclaimed scientific method to determine his head shape. I know I'm and intermediate oval, I wear a brand of helmet that has always fit me consistently and they are intermediate oval. So, I measured his head front to back, and from ear to ear and comparing measurements. I find only a 0.75" difference between the two measurements. So we ordered a model of Arai offered in Round shape. Viola, that's his proper fit.

So scorpion helmet, textile jacket, and rebut gloves. Had road rash on one leg, broke me left thumb and right wrist. But my head and face were fine, and not a scratch on my upper body. After riding for 15 years I was hit by a truck at 70mph 6 months ago. Was just cruising on the highway enjoying the weather and a truck didn't see me and tried to cross the road. Had less then a second to react. Was in the ICU for a week and broke 11 bones, had a brain bleed and had emergency surgery on my knee. Had I not been fully geared (helmet, jacket, Kevlar riding jeans, boots and gloves) I wouldn't be here right now. Craziest part was being conscious the entire time and vividly remembering every second. Listen to Yammie, gear is extremely important. Even when its hot out. I'm pretty much fully recovered minus the knee pain now but I couldn't walk for nearly a month after the accident. Don't skimp out on the gear.
